    The Special Effects of this film was off the charts when this was released in 2009!

    • @toreadoress
      @toreadoress Před 2 měsíci +12

      Yeah this may be the most expensive disaster movie ever made. 200 million USD budget which on itself was bonkers for 2009. Avatar had slightly higher budget, I never expected they'll pour that much money for a disaster movie. They were all capitalizing on the whole "hype" about the Mayan calendar and predictions for the end of the world in 2012. A lot of people actually believed it back then or were scared.
      I never went to see that movie because I was mad they were capitalizing on people's fear and only fueling it more. I though it would be this super serious and dramatic movie enhancing that fear, but after I finally saw it, it seems more like they were poking fun at the whole thing with just how ridiculous and over the top the movie is to the point it's basically trolling.

    • @dayangmarikit6860
      @dayangmarikit6860 Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@toreadoressI mean, you can't really blame people for being in fear 😂... There was that huge gaping sinkhole in the middle of a city in Guatemala in 2010, then it was followed by a massive earthquake and tsunami in Japan in 2011... seems like the Earth was trolling us 😂

    • @toreadoress
      @toreadoress Před 2 měsíci

      @@dayangmarikit6860 I never said anything about blaming people for being afraid, if anything I said the reason I didn't watch the movie when came out was be because I didn't like the idea of spreading even more irrational fear amoung people who already believed it, because it capitalises of their fear. I was blaming the media fueling it even more and twisting it, because fear sells. The whole thing was absolutely ridiculous and had no grounds in reality. There was also a prediction a lot of people believed that the world would end in the year 2000, yet that also never happened. There were multiple "predictions" of the world ending in the 20th century, but they never happened too.
      There were always big natural disasters in the past and sadly always will be in the future, there were big disasters in the 2000s, 90s, 80s and pretty much every decade before that. But because the world was supposed to end in 2012, anything that happened close to that year was blamed on the world ending event so somehow it must be true, while completely ignoring everything that has happened before that, but that's not convenient and this was what the media was feeding people and a lot were believing it.

    Great reaction Jen like always, I like this movie, and there are some fun-facts about it. The "Russian plane" was a Antonov An-225 Mriya. Although they marked this plane as an Antonov 500, there's no such plane. Also, the plane is from Ukraine, not Russia. The An-225 was destroyed in the Battle of Antonov Airport during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. John Cusack ad-libbed the line "That guy's an actor, he's reading a script!", when talking about the California Governor (who appears to be a caricature of Arnold Schwarzenegger), the original line in the screenplay was "The Governor's a Meathead, how could he know anything? You gotta trust me over some politician. come on". Some felt the line would be a bit too hard on Arnold Schwarzenegger. Charlie Frost's animation about the end of the world heavily references the animated Internet meme, "The End of ze World", which centers around the idea that humanity will kill itself as a whole before any natural disaster would ever have the time to destroy it. In the movie, New York City was flooded in summer 2012. In real life, parts of New York City flooded due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. The character of Charlie Frost seems loosely based on volcanologists David Johnston and Harry Glicken. Johnston was killed in the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980. He was able to broadcast, "Vancouver! Vancouver! This is it!" as a warning before he died. Glicken was killed by a pyroclastic flow on Mount Unzen in Japan in 1991. He was so eccentric and disorganized that the U.S. Geological Survey only offered him temporary positions, despite his incredibly thorough research on Mount St. Helens. Keep up the good work.

    Some quick facts for you all. Roland Emmerich told MTV the cover-up name for this film was "Farewell Atlantis", which is the title of lead character Jackson Curtis' book. The character Jackson Curtis is the real name of 50 Cent (Curtis Jackson) backwards. Executive producer, co-writer, and director Roland Emmerich is a big fan of rapper 50 Cent, and wanted to name his lead character after him.Gerard Butler was first considered for the role of Jackson Curtis. He turned it down because of scheduling conflicts.

      While it's true that Roland Emmerich disclosed the cover-up name "Farewell Atlantis" for the movie "2012" in an interview with MTV, the information about the character Jackson Curtis being named after rapper 50 Cent (Curtis Jackson) and Gerard Butler being considered for the role is inaccurate. "2012" features John Cusack as Jackson Curtis, not 50 Cent, and there is no known connection between the character's name and the rapper. Additionally, there's no evidence suggesting that Gerard Butler was considered for the role of Jackson Curtis.

      Character portrayal: John Cusack played the character of Jackson Curtis in the movie, not rapper 50 Cent (Curtis Jackson). There's no connection between the character's name and the rapper.
      Casting information: While the casting process details aren't entirely public knowledge, there's no evidence to suggest Gerard Butler was ever considered for the role of Jackson Curtis.

    Aaah yes, the movie that conned the whole world into beliving that the mayan calender was ending 2012, when in reality, it just entered its 13th "baktun" (each one of those spanning 394 years) in the age of mankind. The age that came before us/that ENDED 5k years ago was told to have had just 13 baktun, not ours. Going by that calender-ending logic, we are good for literaly dozens of billions of years to come.... 😂

      Moreover, the whole "calendar ends" business is based on one single artefact that is incomplete. There are lots of other calendars from the same era that show different information. It would be like if a future archaeologist found a calendar with November and December torn out and thought that meant that we believed the world would end on Halloween.

    Hi Jen. You seem to love many of the movies I do and I love your reactions to them.
    Being British, Welsh to be exact lol I thought I’d send you a recommendation.
    Twin Town is a fantastic Welsh made 90’s film with Rhys Ifans. First part of the movie starts out really fun with the stoner twins but takes a really dark turn.
    Seems to be a film many brits love but is often overlooked.
    Really hope you consider reacting to it or putting it in a poll, as I think you will love it.
    Keep up the great work.

John Cusack movies you should watch are "Gross Pointe Blank", "Say Anything" and he has a smaller role in "Stand By Me", and for a a campy action but fun one is "Con Air".

And there is an old movie from 1974 called "Earthquake" with Charlton Heston. There is also another old film called "Crack in the World" (1965) where someone had the bright idea of detonating a nuclear bomb inside an active volcano (in order to try and stop a bigger catastrophe).

  • @xzonia1

    Yeah, this movie isn't as good as other disaster movies I've watched because we the audience aren't really given anything to cheer for. No plans are laid out for us to follow; we're just left guessing. In The Day After Tomorrow, we're told it's important to keep the fire going, we cheer for the dad going to rescue his son, we have an idea of what to expect ahead of time so we can see if things are going well or not. This movie doesn't give us a guide like that, so we are dragged along through events rather than anticipating them. It's a subtle difference, but one that changes your level of satisfaction with how the movie unfolds and why this one leaves us feeling disquieted at the end instead of victorious or hopeful. Storytelling 101 fail in this movie, but I still like it.
    If you want to check out Godzilla, go for it! I watched the original many times as a kid and loved it, but I've never seen the fancy modern remake. Could be fun to see. :)

The movie stopped/crashed 5 mins in. Then again 10 mins later. Felt a bit ominous. Walked out with a free movie pass and went bowling instead. I guess it's not that interesting of a story.

    2012 was marketed through the fictional Institute for Human Continuity, at a viral marketing website that was created by the movie studio.
    At the website, filmgoers could register for a lottery number to be part of a small population that would be rescued from the global destruction. David Morrison of NASA, who had received over 1,000 inquiries from people who thought the website was genuine, condemned it. "I've even had cases of teenagers writing to me saying they are contemplating suicide because they don't want to see the world end", Morrison said. "I think when you lie on the internet and scare children to make a buck, that is ethically wrong."
