  • In this video we discuss five reasons Caucasian Ovcharkas are wonderful pets! If this is your first time watching our channel, check out the other two videos about getting a Caucasian Ovcharka before watching this one. There are so many reasons to get a Caucasian Ovcharkas, but here are just a few! These dogs are extremely protective and loyal to their owners. In addition, Caucasian Ovcharkas are intelligent dogs. They pick up on commands quickly, and with the right owner, can be very well-trained and well-behaved dogs. Even though they are most known for their protective instincts, most of the time these dogs have a very calm temperament. Tyr is very content just lying around the house for most of the day. Lastly, Caucasian Ovcharkas are extremely affectionate for those they deem part of their "flock." That means they will be very attached to certain people, other pets, and anyone they believe they must protect. There are so many reas

    Great videos you're making and thank you for being one of the very very few CZcams accounts that displays the family life side of this dog breed. Keep up the good work and I am very interested in future videos when Týr has become a big boy and what that all brings about!

      Thank you... now for him to be a family dog, we socialize the heck out of him. Every chance we get, he interacts with people and we make it a point to have him around people he will most likely see in the future.

    One thing you should definitely know is you absolutely cannot just let random people into your house without introducing them or putting your CO safely away.
    Looking forward to more Tyr content! I know he’s bringing you and your family so much joy and keeping you safe!

    Very well explained! I read something in the comments that I really liked: you guys are about the only ones out there showing the real thing, not the stupid, half crazy stuff with COs bitting and being aggressive. Thank you for being so honest.

    • @aliciashaver2014
      @aliciashaver2014 Před 5 lety +6

      Thanks! That is one of the reasons we created this channel. COs can be aggressive, but in reality if they are trained right, they are just big babies.

      @tyrtheovcharka9771  Před 5 lety +5

      Thank you. That was one of the big reasons we started this channel. Most of the other channels that talked about these guys just showed the mean aggressive dog that only showed how mean they can be. I'll be the first to admit. It is easy to make one of these guys aggressive. It takes a lot of work to make them a family dog but of you put in that work, you will have one of the best family dogs ever!

    Awesome, thanks - been bing-watching Tyr-videos today :-) And have seen those other 2 videos. I knew a couple of Ovcharkas back in Switzerland, owned by neighbouring farmers. Amazing dogs, but contrary to the Great Pyrenees also present on the farm, the Ovcharkas would have this aura of "don't touch me, stranger!" about them, and position themselves between the farm house and the public road that led through the farm. Have an Estrela Mountain Dog now, living in Portugal, and it's amazing how similar their traits are - they even look similar, that is, if you imagine a super-slimline Ovcharka. You're doing a great job, man, thanks for sharing your journey with Tyr!

    Glad to see someone actually documenting the behaviour of an ovcharka. All you said is exactly how my 10month old was when he was that age. Especially the part where the family is separated in the house he will find a spot to oversee everyone. Mine even gets a bit agitated (nothing mean , he just keeps running between everyone he considers as part of the flock, to be able to see them).

    My Ovcharka is fearless. We had a wolf pack venture on my land and he totally eviserated a wolf while being bitten on the leg by another wold. Fortunately, I got one more down with my 9MM while Rooster was engaged. He really protects my property and me. When one wolf swung at me, Rooster tackled that SOB and maybe saved my life. He is a wonderful companion, but in combat, whatch out.

      Tyr The Ovcharka no great challenge. She’s quite crazy and playful but also very sweet. In a week she was “my dog”. I guess that after a CO, all dogs are easy. The wonderful thing is how patient my CO is with her. He tolerates all her craziness and even plays a bit with her. But I’m in a new, more difficult challenge: my neighbours got a miniature Teckel (I think in America is called a Daschund), a female, and I take care of her until mid afternoon. The thing is, Josie the Great Dane hates the little dog, Vita (also belongs to my neighbours but she’s my CO bestie) doesn’t care much for her too and the little midget screams like a banshee. My CO kills mouses and birds, I’m afraid of what he will do sensing that “his” girls don’t like the little thing. He’s great with my cats, but I’m still wondering what to do. 😊

      I cover that more in the first two "5 things" videos. In a nut shell, if you don't let them know you're in charge, they will assume they are and if you don't properly socialize them, their protective nature can easily become aggressive in so much as they will protect you from everything and everyone

    What do you know about the stranger aggression they have, especially as they age?

    • @tyrtheovcharka9771
      @tyrtheovcharka9771  Před 4 lety

      After they get about a year old (maybe younger if they are around a female in heat) they kinda reach a point where they are full on the number of people in their life. The "aggression" in my opinion is just protective behavior that hasn't been tempered with socialization. If you properly socialize, you can lessen (not eliminate) the strong reaction they have to strangers. We use the same words every time tyr meets someone. "Tyr that's friend" and this helps when he meets new people as he gets older. He will go into a protective behavior. Then I'll say týr that's friend and he will relax a little. Of course introducing an older dog to people is a whole other process.
      The biggest thing I can say is that yes, at about a year old, their protective nature can easily become aggressive if not properly socialised. All of this is of course dependent on how they see their owner. Do they trust their owners judgement that someone is a friend? If not, most likely, the owner isn't the one in charge anyways. Hope that helps. I have a tendency to ramble.
