  • Hey, everyone! Today, we take a look at this 2020 ram 2500 with the 6.4 hemi and 24,000 miles on it. It appears to me that the oil has never been changed, and eventually all but maybe 1-2 quarts was consumed by the engine in that time. This engine has severe internal failure and will need to be replaced. I also briefly touch on the dredded 5.7 and 6.4 roller lifter and cam wear issue.

    He didn't take it to the dealer for warranty because he knew damn well warranty wouldn't cover it with original oil in it at 24,000 miles

    I have 234k on my 5.7 hemi. Oil changed every 5000 miles by me. Mopar filter, castrol oil. No ticks,leaks, pressure issues. Not sure why others have this issue unless poor maint. I've had 3 hemis in 20 years and never failed.

      Yeah I’m on my 3rd Hemi but to be fair the first one was an 03 without the MDS crap and that one only had about 110k when I sold it, the other was a 2012 that I had for 12,000 miles and now I have my ‘19 that I just hit 25k on. There was ONE time I started my 2019 and it had what sounded like a terrible lifter tick for a few seconds then it quit. Shit the truck off and started it up again and haven’t had an issue since. Sometimes I get very minor lifter tick for half a second but nothing like that one time. I agree though maintenance is huge.

      @@TonyTheTruckGuy could be the exhaust manifold bolts. It also causes the tick but only for a few seconds on startup when the engine is cold, then goes away. Had that issue on my ram 1500....had 4 snapped bolts and had to get them replaced under my lifetime powertrain warranty. 09 ram 1500 with 5.7 hemi.

      Just don't idle the hemi. All police hemis have developed lifter/flat cam issue at around 50k due to the excessive idle. Mine is a 2014 with 100k kms at the moment. No issues yet.

      @@markwangontario7573 exactly. The cam/lifter issue is a design flaw with the block. Part of the 09 revisions to the 09 hemi (EZH version for rams) was the cam now sits higher in the block which makes it harder for it to get lubricated, so low rpms starve the cam for oil and cause the failure. Inherently the only way to truly fix it is for chrysler to redesign the block. The fact that after 11 years they haven’t, is a bit concerning. Same with the exhaust manifold bolts. Been a problem for over a decade and they haven’t even attempted to address the problem. They Just replace them with the same part when it breaks and move on.

      @@chasefeller1279 I guess I haven’t checked recently but if I have broken bolts on my 2019 then we have problems haha. The one time it happened it sounded like a legit lifter tick. I shut it down, fired it back up and it was fine.

    I have a 6.4 with 167000 miles on it. I had the roller on the number 5 lifter seized up at 150000 miles that chewed up the camshaft. I put in all new lifters, a new camshaft and replaced all the spark plugs which cost me $5,000 total. Well worth the money. I love this motor

      That's awful. I drove 167k miles in a nissan I. Less than 2 years. If I had 2 do work on my motor with low miles like that I wouldn't touch it. I'm at 417k and my motor is just fine lol.

    The 6.4l is the best gas motor of the 3. Its built way heavier. The cam lifter failer happens on 1.7% of 5.7l and less on the 6.4l. You see it because people blow it up as being a huge issue. If you idle your vehicle, it is. I've seen several 6.4l towimg over 15k miles all time as a hotshot truck, and the oil was changed every 5k miles. Every one of them was well over 400k miles (8sp) before he needed to do anything to them. The pistons have oilers shooting cool oil from the cooler into the bottom side of the piston to keep them cool. Sodium filled exhaust valves, aircraft grade stainless steel exhaust manifolds. The belly is forged steel and it uses a lot of demon parts. The motor is a monster for long-term use. You just have to actually maintain the vehicle.

    Regular oil changes are imperative for Hemi engines. Especially these HD fleet trucks.

    My last 6.4 hemi 3500 had 53,000 miles when I traded for another 6.4 hemi 2500 oil changed on “ time every time “ no issues whatsoever with over 15,000 miles logged towing a 8500 pd skid steer and a 7 ton trailer for my business it’s this is my 5th 6.4 hemi since they’re introduction and never had any issues with motor or transmissions I put about 35,000 miles a year on my trucks I don’t understand all the issues these people are having.

    Well this owner was an idiot. I'm sure the dealer will void the warranty when they pull the heads off and see the burned oil and sludge. Knowing this issue i run my 19 ram to 5,000 miles on oil change intervals and only use mobile 1 oil and filters.

      I run between 5 and 7k on my '19 and use Pennzoil just because that's what the dealer uses and Mopar recommends. Didn't want any reason to void warranty haha.

    I had a 2005 Ram with the 5.7 Hemi. Sold it in 2018 with 195K and had zero problems with it. Of course I did all of the scheduled maintenance ALL of THE TIME. I now have a 2018 RAM 3500 with the 6.4 Hemi and it has 20,700 miles on it. I have changed the oil twice on it already. I will never understand why people pay good money for a truck and then don't take care of it.

      I agree. That being said, there have been a fair amount of issues from the never 5.7 and 6.4 due to the cam/lifter failure I briefly touched on. In the case of this video, it seems to be caused by neglect, but in other instances, it can happen even if you keep up on maintenance. Unfortunately, the new Hemis aren't QUITE as reliable as the old ones just for that reason. They should have left the old design alone haha.

      @@TonyTheTruckGuy I am not mechanically inclined but have great respect for all you guys. That said I always follow manufacturer recommendations and have had few problems with the 7 trucks I've owned over the last 30 years. I have researched this issue though and the more recent changes made to the Ram Hemi including "MDS" seem to be causing more lifter problems. Hopefully the next revision will address oil starvation and ELIMINATE MDS. Neither the Ford HD 7.3 or the GM HD 6.6 gas engines have cylinder deactivation.

      @@TonyTheTruckGuy Stellantis has to be aware of this problem. More than likely it will be addressed in the next revision. Fingers crossed on MDS elimination. In the mean time they will repair as warranty dictates and accept the cost. Every engine/car/truck has unique problems.
      I would add that you can gently remind owners to do the basic maintenance and they will agree with good intentions then forget or procrastinate. I have a friend in diesel repair and he sees it more with individuals than fleet vehicles as the latter rely on them for business.
      My friend (and my dad too) always said oil is like blood. Keep it clean. Also "take care of your vehicle and it will take care of you". I'm sure you've heard same but encounter owners who will never do this and then complain when they have failure and a big bill. Good luck man!. Great respect.....

      I also bought 2021 2500 6.4 tradesmen. I will be doing my own oil change very soon just hit 2000 miles. I was told that AMS oil meets the requirements or to use Pennzoil so NAPA caries the filter for the RAM, Napa gold #7060. Any thoughts!?

    Recently bought a 2020 Rebel. When it was first started, it rattled pretty good, but quit quickly. I wasn’t going to get, but it was litteraly the only one I could find optioned the way I wanted in the country. So, now after almost 8k miles, all good. ( knock on wood) Only heard the tick once since buying, and that was after it sat for about a week. Went away quick. This is addressed as a “ normal” condition in the owner’s manual. I’ve heard that avoiding long periods idling is a good idea. This is my second 5.7. I had my first one for 17 years before giving to my sister. Has over 170k, has had the the “hemi Tick” since about 35 k, but still runs great with lots of power.

      They all tick. Every hemi I’ve ever heard
. And just about every other hydraulic lifter motor. Some louder than others yes. You should hear the tick on a mechanically adjustable lash engine like a k24 in a Honda CR-V. Clatters like a diesel on startup. Way louder than any hemi tick. Quiets down when warm when metal expands. Those k24 motors last for hundreds of thousands of miles ticking away. Ticking engine noise is overrated sometimes. Knocking and slappin is what you gotta be worried about lol. Change the oil on time, be easy on the motor when it’s in the process of warming up and your motor should have a good chance of lasting regardless of the manufacture. It’s common sense stuff but I guess common sense ain’t common. Lol

    2017 ram 1500 Laramie longhorn bought it new. I’m at 80k still runs exactly the same as the day I bought it. 5 30 royal purple every 4500 miles

    I have a pentastar v6 in my Ram 1500, which is known for rocker bering problems. I have been pretty ritualistic on maintenance and oil changes. Have 140,000 miles on it and the only major repairs on the engine is replace the oil cooler and a coil pack. I did remove the valve cover once when U was having misfire to check the rockers incase it could be one of them. Only two showed minor signs of the needle bearings going bad, so I did replace them. Next up is to replace the cam phasers. A well maintained engine along with a well built one will last a long time.

    I have a 2011 5.7 ram hemi.. 87k miles.. the exhaust manifold needed to be repaired but other than that I never have any problems sounds like a beast when it starts compared to my friends 5.3 chevy.

    Show the screen that show idle time.. it's idle time and cheep oil that does it. My 6.4 came with 0W40 full synthetic with certain requirements.. so for that reason I use Pennzoil SRT ... "Only" and my 6.4 is the most awesome engine work horse... If anyone wants bash something... pick on the 66RFE

    Rotella T T6 5/40 with the larger or SRT filters, change my oil every 5000km

    That is owner neglect, I had a 2016 Ram 2500 with a 6.4 Hemi and it did not use any oil and I did not change the oil until the oil change indicator would tell me to which was around 7,000 to 8,000 miles. I also only use Redline 0w-40 Group V Ester Synthetic oil in the engine. I only use Redline oil in all my vehicles and have never had an issue.

    I have $100 that says that thing has never had an oil change. Warranty should be denied unless the owner can prove they've maintained it.

    I have a 19 2500 with the 6.4 I change my oil every 5k whether it needs it or not and I use shaeffers oil with some EP Moly...hemis love moly

      EP Moly Is that oil additive. I have a 2019 6.4 and change my oil using high grade 0w40 oil and filter. I don’t think it’s idling that causes the tick it’s neglect of oil maintenance.

      Thought I had the hemi tick, turns out it was broken exhaust manifold bolts.. they put the same oem ones back in... Waiting for the tick to come back.

    Vehicle care is key to a vehicle beyond warranty, my first was an 06 4.7L the one oil related issue I noticed was from parking in my driveway (slightly sloped). If I backed into my driveway the motor had a tick the next morning until warmed up, if I pulled into my driveway I never had a tick. Maybe a sump defect or just a weird occurrence. Current 2020 Ram 2500 6.4L and my 2017 6.4L haven't had an issue.

    I ran Redline oil in my 5.7 and red line in my 6.4 never had a problem these new oil change specs at 10,000 miles it's crazy I still do mine every 3,000.

      Did mine every 5-6k on my 5.7. ONE time I started it up in the winter there was a bad ticking. I shut it off and fired it back up and noise was gone. Never happened again lol.

    I had a 2016 Ram 2500 with the 6.4 and put over 100,000 km on it in 3 years with no problems at all, just did oil changes that’s it. I did have a starter issue with my 2014 Ram 1500 though lol, it only had about 5000 km on it with I went to start it and it just kept turning over for about 2 mins before it died lol. For some reason the starter got stuck engaged when I used the push start, no way to stop it from cranking over either 😂. I now have a 2020 Power Wagon so fingers crossed that it holds up because I fucking love this thing.

    I have 2020 6.4 3500 I change my oil every 3k to 5k using pens oil 0w40 never hotrod or pull anything. 44k miles I'm praying I don't have problems

    I bought a 2019 2500 Laramie with the 6.4 Hemi in September 2019. I don’t drive it a whole lot, I’ve put just over 6k miles on it in the almost year and a half of ownership. I still change it every 6 months at the dealer. Full synthetic oil changes are a bargain now a days. Its cheap insurance.

    You have to keep the oil topped up, it does burn oil, its a 6.4 hemi don't let the oil drop low on the dip stick!

    There was a commercial years back from one of the oil companies the slogan was- you can pay me now , or you can pay me later. Just a few liters or quarts low is enough to kill a motor from any manufacturer.

    Manifolds on the 5.7 is prone to cracking, my 1500 Ram made the same noise and thats what it was, with only 16k miles.. But you have some thing else going on too if that's whats making that noise.

      Oh yeah this one definitely had internal engine damage. I can’t believe the manifolds are STILL an issue on these engines. They really need to address those. 16k is ridiculous.

    Well clearly this guy abused the truck and never changed the oil. I own a 19 Ram 2500 with the 6.4l and 6800 miles. Just got it back from the dealer who replaced lifters because it was making a knocking noise like starting a vehicle after an oil change with a dry filter. I changed my oil at 2100 miles and 5700 miles with the proper 0w-40 Pennzoil and also only have 20 hours of idle on 205 total hoursas I know idling a Hemi is not good due to how high the cam sits in the block. Absolutely yes this is still a thing with these Hemis which bums me out because the truck is awesome otherwise. I have done everything above and beyond to make sure I took care of this engine so its just luck of the draw. Guess I should I went with the 7.3l Ford

      Damn, those are frequent oil changes, too. Does it really call for 0w-40? My 5.7 calls for 5w-20. I'm almost wondering if the 40 weight is too thick to get through those small oil passages. Hopefully it lasts longer now that they fixed it. I dig the name by the way lol.

      @@ericsvalland4417 That really has me baffled. The 5.7 and 6.4 are literally twin, modular engines. The only reason the 6.2 hellcat doesn't have the lifter and cam issues is because it doesn't have the MDS. But it seems that the 6.4 has this issue more than the 5.7. The only thing that makes sense to me is that the 40 weight is too thick to get into them little lifter oiling holes. Very strange.

    So that engine should of had 5 oil changes and its had 0. I would check the filter to see if it was factory installed. It will be stamped on the bottom of filter and say Factory Installed.

    i change my oil on my 2019 1500 5.7 every 5-6k miles or so , i usually do my own oil changes but not risking my new truck so i take it to the dealer, that way if something goes wrong they’re to blame haha

      I’m the same as you. I do the same also and bring it to the dealer. This way they have no excuse for any warranty issues. Once warranty is over I will do my own. Cheers.

      I also have mine changed every 5-7k and up until the most recent oil change, I had the dealer do it for the same reason you guys listed. Plus it’s really not much more for them to do it. I only did the last one myself so I could make a video out of it. So if anything happens and they try to deny warranty, I have video evidence of me changing the oil 😂

    Got a new 2022 Challenger R/T Scat pack with this block in it, and I've gotten into a habit I think I'm going to maintain not just after "Break in", and that's check the oil after every refuel. It's easy, takes 5 minutes, and since I don't drive the wheels off of it I'll be taking it in to service way before the mileage is due. Sounds like these engines need a more aggressive service cycle (my dealer recommends 3 month, 3K still even for full synthetic). Good to know there are inherent problems with this, but this case just seems like a problem someone knew about that they just let go until the engine died.

    I always disable the mds because it bogs the engine out and hopefully that helps it last longer also I did get an extended warranty!

    Amsoil is a good oil. Start using Amsoil when the engine is new. It’s a good cold start oil.

    With this truck it sounds like poor maintenance, who knows, had 05 2500 5.7 none msd, got 80k on it with out a single problem and towed a 5k trailer several times a year, loved it, traded up to a Cummins, then got older then traded down to a 2018 ram 1500 with 5.7, no longer tow anything, motor replacement at 11k, then had small issues starting again at 18k, traded it for a tundra, hopefully the last truck I ever buy, so far so good!

    Currently driving a 2021 Ram 2500 with the 6.4 as a loaner vehicle, and even at 7500 miles i would honestly say there is alot of engine noise and can definitely hear the valves moreso than any other V8s ive had/heard.

    I have a 2004 Ram 1500 SLT Sport and I have a air intake throttle body throttle body spacer stage 2 jet chip computer programmer Gibson exhaust the truck is turned from day 1 when I purchased the truck new in 03. About a year and a half ago I just went over 100k miles always used 5w 30 synthetic oil eather Royal Purple or another top brand oil every so often using a oil additive for Extra Protection like Z-Max but I was driving one day and the motor starting to run extremely rough found out passenger side back 4 lifter 3rd one from the back the roller broke off. Took the truck to my friend great mechanic took the left side apart pulled the lifters out all 4 were there except the bottom roller broke off. This is the amazing part send a camera into the hole the camshaft did not even have a scratch sent the head out purchased for new lifters gaskets bolts put everything back together truck started up and it was idling like the first day having the truck. Just went over 112k miles truck runs perfect I do have a slight ticking noise which is really not bad but never found the roller somewhere in motor truck idles so smooth the motor does not shake at all don't know how nothing happened to the cam truck has amazing power and speed but that's because always change the oil over the summer small leak in A.C. changed everything changed the alternator which really didn't need to be changed but always kept up on the belts hoses thermostat oil pressure regulator PCV valve but looking at new trucks now because of the rust over the back wheel wells fixed 2 times still happens took all the badges off even the dealership cannot believe how clean the interior and outside of the truck was. But I was so lucky with my motor. Like always stay safe and healthy God bless

    I am fully aware of potential lifter problems with hemi engines however In this case the customer starved the engine of oil with improper maintenance leading to this failure.

      Which is why I made clear that the engine was low on oil. What I said about the cam and lifter issue is still true, it's a known problem.

    It's known that 3rd gen Hemi's have upper valvetrain oiling issues, it's been like that since they came out. You NEED to do the oil changes on schedule and use a quality oil. Doing them on time is getting 2009 Charger R/T to 229k miles without issue.
    I love my Mopar's but it's the reality of the motors they use, you can't say they don't eat lifters and cams more than Chevy LS's and Ford 5.0s because they do. But proper maintenance really helps curb that problem.

    I’ve got a 2005 ram 2500 manual. Paid $7000 for her pre Covid. This truck is amazing!! It pulls my 34ft camper and runs great. 160,000 miles on her. The only issues was replaced clutch last year and my driver side exhaust manifold leaks. Dodge has always been good to me. My BMW on the other hand is full of crap plastic and melts in the summer. I will never ever buy another BMW!! There’s a reason you need money to own one because they always need expensive work. I’m very good at keeping up with all maintenance fyi. But seriously bmw’s suck!

      Yeah I have a buddy that currently has a Buick and is looking at BMW/Audi. I told him to get Lexus because it’s essentially Toyota so more reliable and still probably the cheapest of the “luxury” cars. The Euro stuff is nice when it’s new, but maintenance would kill me haha. I had a 2005 Cummins as well! Thing was awesome, but I got suckered into the "new truck" mentality and traded it in for a new hemi 1500 back in 2012. Boy, was THAT a mistake.

    I thought uncle Tony proved the lifted angle is the issue. The roller doesn't see oil unless it's under rpm so idling or stop and go traffic isn't good for the hemi engines but my dad has had two hemi 1500s and they've both seen work and miles with no issues

      Yeah I’ve had decent luck with the 5.7’s I’ve owned, but the 5.7 also uses a thinner oil. I’m wondering if that’s why this issue seems to be so frequent on the 6.4. Of course this particular one appears to be lack of maintenance.

    I have a 2016 Ram 3500 6.4 Cab and chassis I put a repo body on it. (Dynamic 701) I use the motor oil Pennzoil ultra platinum 0W 40 that they say to use but I change my oil every 4000 because I’m towing every day with it. And I change all my fluids coolent everything I heard about this problem when I was researching this truck back when I bought it I actually bought it new in 2017 but I read on the forums back then people were talking about this issue that’s another reason why I keep my oil change. But so far I haven’t had any issues truck runs like a top and has a ton of torque. But I would like to know When did the owner said it started making that noise? His best bet is to change that oil and take that truck to the dealership and say here you go!!! LMFAO!! Good luck!!

    I have had at least 6 hemi company trucks from 5.7's to 6.4's all went over 150k before they replaced them. Very long idle times maintenances was done every 5 to 6k miles and the only thing that has ever happened was a alternator. And that was my fault I let it idle for several hrs a couple of long days in the blazing sun with the ac on to keep my computer cool and I still drove it 100 miles to a dealer in KC because it didn't completely die and leave me stranded. The only thing was the alternator was 700.00 and took 2 weeks to get.

    Regardless of the owner screwing up, apparently, the world still apparently doesnt know the 5.7 n the 6.4 have upper valvetrain oiling issues but Ram keeps making commercials that they make the toughest engines on the road. I know 6.2l fords and 6.0l chevys that have had the ever living piss beat out of them and never failed like a Hemi fails.

      Personally, I've owned a few Hemi's and haven't had any issues, same with the buddies I know that have them, but I'm grateful for the luck. I'm also a big fan of the '99-'07 GM 5.3 and 6.0. They get they're own lifter tick, but it'll run forever that way. Never really messed with a 6.2

    We have 3 2019 6.4's now with bad engines, all under 50k miles..These are bucket lift work trucks that have to idle to run a pto for lift operation. Evidently bad oil pressure at idle causing the cams to get eat up and ruin the engine..Only 36k warranty on commercial Dodge vehicles. Also we have inhouse fleet mechanic and these have PM done every 6k with M1 synthetic.. Never will buy any Dodge Chrysler vehicle ever!

      Idle is terrible for any engine, especially these hemi’s that are prone to cam and lifter failure unfortunately. Had good luck with all my other mopar vehicles, including several 5.7 hemi, but I also don’t idle them for hours on end lol

      @@mateo-6965 4.8 and 6.0 are also a lot older engine compared to the 6.4 so they have their kinks worked out and don’t even make them anymore lol. My 01 Sierra with 5.3 always had a lifter tick but it never really got worse and usually went away after a few minutes once it got warm. Good engines.

    I have 2017 ram 2500 with 6.4 had 79000 miles was ticking cam and lifters $3500.00 then starter $900.00 now last year transmission $7500.00 asked if dodge was taking are of the issues they said they know their is a problem but they will not take care of it they wanted to sell me a new dodge I ask if they fixed the issues they said no so I said won’t buy another one. So don’t buy a ram 5.7 or 6.4

    The customer changed the oil by resetting the oil life monitor.I’m surprised it didn’t go longer than 24 k,I guess it would have it it didn’t get too low.Hopefully dealer denied the coverage, save the warranty for ppl who actually take care of their vehicle.

    Sure regular maintenance is a must , but a trucks engine should still be reliable and take a beating since they are meant as work vehicles especially that low of miles .... I had a 05 silverado with 275k when I traded it in and it had 0 engine noise , my new truck is a 13 ram with 80k miles and is already getting the "hemi tick" and here i was worried about transmission issues with the rams and my problem is most likely lifter failure lol

    I hate the 6.4 hemi mine had it from new has 15,000 miles changed oil 5 times with AMSOIL signature series 25,000 or one year. The dealership said its loader then normal something going on but no codes so there not going to do anything.

      For the truck idle a lot? Changing synthetic oil every 3k miles is way overkill. I’d just be topping it off if it’s low. Shouldn’t matter if there’s any codes or not for warranty. Oil consumption is oil consumption and that will never throw a code lol. I’d try another dealer.

    changing oil keeps everything clean and nice inside your engine that’s pretty obvious. Changing oil on time also keeps it running like new. After the filter bypasses from to much dirt and sludge your oil is like gojo orange hand cleaner.

      Yes. I hang exterior and interior doors. I put a hundred plus miles on my truck every day running across the town of Denver. It's been a good truck. You just gotta make sure to change oil on time so those tiny ports in the lifters don't get clogged.

    I have a 2014 2500 2 wheel drive 6.4 l 70000 MI. I've only used the oil that the manual says to use and I always change it in time and I've never had any kind of issues like that thank goodness knock on wood. That Motors been great for me so far. Something I'd like to add though I can't buy the oil anywhere but the dealer if I get what the manual says to get. I've had such bad like letting them change the oil that I always just do it myself but the price is the same whether I let them do it or I do it. Nobody else sells the kind of Pennzoil that I need other than the dealer though. So after filter and oil are roughly spent about a hundred bucks every oil change doing it myself

      Yeah it’s a hard choice when the dealer can do it for you at the same cost. I just try to make sure to double check the drain plug, oil filter, and oil level after they do the service. Of course at that point you may as well just do it yourself 😂

    This happened to me after I change the starter and I drive the truck daily it only happened after I put the starter.

    If you are not using high quality synthetic oil with high detergent, you will be repairing the engine.

      Ive been putting conventional walmart oil in my 2009 ram 1500 5.7L for years and its been just fine. Changing the oil frequently is more important than using synthetic . I change mine every 3,000 miles per the owners manual. No issues yet. Synthetic is better yea, but having clean oil by changing it regularly is more important.

      @@chasefeller1279 , conventional oil is not clean oil, it has ton of impurities that are left behind on engine surface.
      Full synthetic oil is better.
      100% synthetic oil is superior oil leaves nothing behind because it's pure.
      Conventional oil does not have enough detergent to keep engine clean.
      Conventional oil cannot tolerate heat.
      Conventional oil is to thick to flow when engine is cold and its number one cause of engine wear and engine problems on ram.

      @@repairvehicle conventional oil is just fine for everyday use as long as you use the correct weight of oil, correct level and change it on time. Plenty of ppl get 200-300k miles with conventional oil on the hemi. My family has owned 4 rams over the past 23 years and never ran synthetic or had any engine failures. My coworker has 3 dodges, including a ram, 2 if which have over 200k miles on conventional oil. Sure synthetic is better all around and will maintain the engine better. When i get a new truck i will be going with synthetic from day 1 just to be safe but at this point my hemi is going on 12 years on conventional just fine. Its not like conventional will destroy your engine. Its way more important to change your oil frequently and ensure its at the proper level. Ive never had to top it off between oil changes. Change spark plugs every 30,000 miles and there’s virtually no carbon build up on them. Sure synthetic will probably make it last even longer but how long are you gonna really keep it anyways. I fully expect the trans or other components to break well before the engine. Luckily i got a lifetime powertrain from chrysler so if it does go out before im ready to trade it in, it’ll get replaced but i expect to buy a new truck in the next 2-3 years anyways. Truck will be close to 15 by then. Who knows, maybe i’ll keep it as a third vehicle and just drive it til the wheels fall off. Im expecting other things to break soon. Im still on pretty much original on everything...radiator, a/c compressor, evap, heatercore, fuel pump, starter. Only had to replace small things like exhaust manifold bolts, rear diff pinion seal and water pump (due to failed seal not pump itself). Still has original a/c charge....never added any refrigerant and still blows cold. I figure those things will start going soon at some point. Not really worried about my engine. Btw, i run the chespest oil you can buy, walmart super tech conventional with a mopar filter. Cost less than $20 total for everything. Ive thought about transitioning slowly, going with high mileage conventional, then synthetic blend then synthetic but figure if theres any wear, its already there and synthetic aint gonna fix it. Just gonna stick to 3,000 mile changes. My family has had 4 rams, a durango, a nitro and a caravan and kept them all 10+ years, 150k+ miles and a lot of things failed, but never an engine. I’ll run synthetic in the next truck (hoping for a ram 2500 with 6.4 hemi next). Be nice if they introduced a new hemi like a 7.0 or something for the hd trucks. Maybe finally work out the cam/lifter issues with a new design.

      @@chasefeller1279, I run synthetic oil only, once a year oil change. 226k miles on my 2012 truck and everything is original never been replaced or repaired. With synthetic oil it's cheaper because less oil changes and zero engine wear.

    I have a 2011 2500 that I had to replace the lifters and camshaft on around 100,000 miles. A mechanic recommended going from 5w20 viscosity to 0w40 to help with the lifters. Do you have an opinion on this?

      Hmmm. I guess I can’t say since my experience with this issues is lacking. I would think that the thinner weight oil would flow better, but the 49 weight is thicker and therefor may stick longer, resulting in less lubrication loss. It’s really hard to say without doing some extensive physical head to head comparison.

      @@TonyTheTruckGuy my mechanic is a Mopar guy. I do trust him. However, you are always taught to follow the recommended viscosity. I definitely don’t what to put money out again for that same problem!

      I had a 2015 with the 6.4 with 180000. I run Mobil 1 synthetic 0w40/ premium napa filters. Never had a issue with it changed oil every 6000 miles . Loved the truck seemed the more miles I put on her the better the fuel mileage too...

    24k mi and starter bad?? Lmao my 1995 jeep wrangler had the original starter replaced this year finally after a decade of it screeching for its life after every coldstart.

      I’m sure they burned it out by cranking and cranking and cranking on it after the truck died trying to get it going again. A LOT of information was left out by the customer and I had to find out everything myself lol

    I noticed on some of the new Ram truck commercials they brag about how they have won the " most appealing truck " award three years in a row.
    Yet they never mention all the recalls and customer complaints flooding their phone lines and e-mail customer complaint account.
    By brother in law but a 2019 2500 with the diesel and he has had to take it to the dealer so many times for recalls and other issues not covered in the recalls.
    I owned Chrysler products for years but ever since they were bought out first by Daimler and now Fiat the quality and reliability has gone way downhill.

      Yeah they are good at making an appealing product, but dealing with the dealer sucks. Although to be fair, I hear the same about dealers from other OEMs as well. All they want is our money unfortunately.

      @@desiderious1 they all suck now unfortunately, my last two chevys both had transmission problems a 15 Silverado and a 17 colorado so I traded out of both of them before they ran out of their power train warranty
