HOW TO REMOVE a CRANK ARM and TIGHTEN a CARTRIDGE BOTTOM BRACKET on a DIAMONDBACK HYBRID BIKE

  • You can tighten your bottom bracket all you want, but if it's worn out internally, it's still going to flop like a trout on the bottom of a canoe. Fishing is mean. Leave the poor little trout alone. I ended up throwing this bike in the garbage. Actually I just leaned it against the garbage can. It wouldn't fit inside.
I don't use my Park BBT-2 bottom bracket tool often, but when I need it, I'm glad I bought it. I went to my local bike shop, as should you, but if you don't want to do that, you can buy one here: amzn.to/2ATZLAG
Recorded on 3/7/2016, which was a windy day, across the street from some dude who was hammering nails, in Newburgh, New York.

Why are you trying to tighten the cup when the lock ring is still in place (and probably preventing you from tightening the cup)? Remove the lock ring, then tighten the cup, replace lockring.

As rusty as that chain is, you’d probably want to replace those bearings. It looks like they’re totally gone. Bikes become junk when you refuse to perform even the most rudimentary maintenance.

Adapter socket above is for sealed crank-bearings, but presence of lock-ring usually means adjustable bearings. Perhaps worth checking by removing crank bearing shell first. If the latter (adjustable) high torque would cause failure (cracking) of bearing shells. Wondered if tool was designed to slip to prevent over-tightening?

As an owner of a Diamondback Outlook MTB, I can really feel for this guy. Same feelings towards my bike, I hate it so much. I keep replacing things on it just to see if there's anything that can redeem it in any way before I leave it in a dumpster and joyfully witness its transformation into a tiny aluminum cube as I'm sipping a margarita.

Looking at the condition of the chain, chainring and the crank, I pretty much guessed the bearings in your bottom bracket were shot before you even started.

How about removing splined nut, examining the thread engagement, If there are tapered bearings , add a washer or spacer to prevent splined nut from bottoming out? I have this prob on my quarry ridge roadmaster 29" , It came this way with the bike brand new. Really ruins my riding outlook.

I bought this crank puller tool and its made in the U.S.A. I want ya'll to look at the welding on this tool,I can't believe that this was made in America.I'm not talking negative about your video because it's a good one but the tool is what I can't believe. It looks Chinese made. Thumbs up on the video buddy, very informative.

faaark, the dangers of following youtube how to videos made by amateurs... just stripped one of my crank arms... Remember to reset the crank removal tool after you have removed one side and before you start the other side, as even though you hand tighten the tool and then firmly tighten by wrench, if the plunger on the tool has not been retracted back to flush or less, then even though it is tight is has not reached the bottom of the crank thread and then when you attempt to remove the crank it will strip the crank arm thread :-( Corollary - only follow videos that appear to be in a workshop environment and when the poster gives some credentials and experience summary eg. I worked in a bike shop for 5 years, and made this video to blah blah; also look for lots of warnings and a detailed explanation of why you should and shouldn't do certain things; not half explanation... :-(

Ok people / newburghbmx, to tighten up this "SHAFT" -bottom bracket, the rust on the on the sprocket denotes a far side cartoon scenario. REMOVE THE CRANK COMPLETELY, clean, & if things seem seem redeemable, LUBE & reinstall.
