- This tutorial will show you how to correctly take apart and rebuild a bottom bracket on a 3 piece crank system.
One-Piece Crank Bottom Bracket: • How to Take Apart a On...
The reason I haven't gone into detail about the exact bottom bracket tools that I used in this video is because although the technique is virtually the same for all bottom brackets, the correct tools to use can vary slightly from one bike to another.
I hope this video is helpful for you. If you have any questions please let me know in the comments below.

Thanks for watching! - Jak na to + styl
Among videos I have watched for bottom bracket, this is the best informative and interesting to watch. Thanks man!
One of the best bike instruction videos I've ever seen! Great camera angles, great instructions (not to brief, not to long), but most importantly: not only showing HOW to do it but also explaining WHY it needs to be done. Thanks!
B
THIS is the man to listen to! That bike looks like it was the first bike ever built, but almost for certain runs better than 999 of 1000 brand new ones! Well done sir!
heheh very funny made me smile, right i thought that too its like this bike got a lot of torture ^_^
Getting ready to do this to my Giant, was kinda scared, I bought the tool for the crank removal part, I think I will buy those thin wrenches too. Thank You. Is it Kool to use silicone grease a.k.a. "Brake Grease" for cars or should I use regular axle grease😮?
99c bike still alive
English is my second language but i can understand him very clearly, he's the best bike repair instructor on CZcams.
9 years since you put it up and still super useful - total face-saver as I tried to put my kids bike back together! Thanks a lot.
Glad to hear!
Viewed a number of bicycle service videos, I found you to be the most distinct in both audio and video, precise in the mechanical explanation and function of each part, this is a great video for those needing a prompt before attempting to service their bikes, thx cj
Shift your front derailleur into the smallest chain-ring position, and using your fingers, lift the chain off of the chain ring, and place it on the frame where the bottom bracket is. With the chain separated from the cogs, you should be able to get an idea of how smoothly the bearings in your bottom bracket are rolling. If it doesn't turn freely, you should service your bottom bracket. Something else to check if you are hearing a creaking noises, is your saddle. Saddles can creak too!
This video was awesome.... clear directions. No fuss. I was going to bring it into the shop but heck.... I can do this!
Thank you for a no-nonsense and informative video. Well explained and very clear. Good to see that I'm not the only one who doesn't ride a $4000 bicycle, BTW!
I had a creaking noise on my bike too, but after taking apart the bottom bracket, replacing the bearings, greasing it all up nicely and putting it back together, I realized that the creaking noise wasn't coming from the bottom bracket at all. It was actually coming from the frame shock absorber whose screws and nuts were all rusty and dry and after cleaning those and the plastic washers on the inside, the creaking noise was gone.
Also, thanks to the uploader, very helpful video. 5/5
An excellent explanation that Mr Hoyle should be proud of. An example for all of us to emulate. Thanks.
I must have watched 20 bottom bracket removal videos and your video is the most simplistic and the most informative. This is my first time trying this myself and I have got the pedal stems and crank off. Now on to the bottom bracket! Kudos and thanks!
you are simply grate
thank you......
...
I've just replaced the bearings on an old Raleigh i'm using for commuting and this video has been a great help. Thank you very much!
Old shop teacher here, grade of 100 for the demonstration, nice job !
Best video I’ve watched on this subject. Goes in-depth on “how to do it”. Plus NO annoying music and captions. Well done CJ.
Just what I needed THANKS! As a 44 Mum who never worked on bikes until recently I just fixed this thanks to you and I couldn't be more stoked. WOOHOO!!
Lucky I'm not fussy about my fingernails though... hahaha :D
Awesome, that's very exciting. Glad the video was helpful!
Thank you for this video. You are very thourough which makes your videos very helpful. I think this video is the best I have seen in terms of bike repair.
Also wanted to mention that I am also a Canadian winter cyclist and the roads, salt, ice and snow make cycling very difficult.
You are the best how to video person I've seen. No wasted conversation. keep it up. learned a lot. Thanks
You Sir are a true Canadian, riding your bike through the Winter. Outstanding!
Very thorough and well explained video, this is the only bottom bracket video that was so clear for me. Thank you!
Great stuff man, thanks a lot! This gave me all the info and the confidence I needed to get an old bottom bracket out of a bicycle that I'm rebuilding.
This is the BEST tutorial I have ever seen. I feel totally comfortable tackling this myself now. Right after I buy those tools.
Many thanks from Vietnam. Your tutorial videos are quite clear. My Giant bike is similar with your green one, so it is very easy to follow.
cheers!
I just want to say that your video is the best one I've found on CZcams! I left it playing while I was taking apart and reinstalling by bottom bracket. Keep up the good videos!
My son's bike has issues of ticking noise from the crank and wobbling crank. This video is a bit old but very to the point and informative. Thank you very much!
just replaced bottom bracket bearings using your video as a guide. good job I looked at the video first, or I would have done it wrong. All's good now, thank you, great help.
I cleaned and adjusted by bottom bracket and crank with you today! Perfect! Many thanks!

Super helpful video for a complete novice! Very clear instructions with great video detail. Thank you so much!
Thank you so very much for the information. You saved me about $65 going to the bike shop ! ! !
Thanks to this video, I have a new bike. This video as well as the few special tools I purchased from Amazon gave me the confidence and expertise to remove and lubricate the bottom bracket! The noise from the bottom bracket was driving me crazy! My six year old bike feels like a new one! This video is spot on! Thanks so much for all the details and the great angles to see how to do it!
NOW I see why you strap milk crates to your bikes - makes it a lot easier to flip them over and work on them! Thanks for another great video
Excellent video, one of the best I have seen with respect to understanding how to service a crank....Thank You very much for taking the time to share your knowledge.
Thanks for share your skills with the rest of the people, from MEXICO thanks a lot
Excellent job,and the way you explained everything. Like a pro.
This is a great video on how to do maintenance on the bottom bracket of a mountain bicycle. Very easy to watch and follow through your instructions.
Just finished changing out my crank bearings yesterday for the very first time. Your video is very easy to follow. Thank you so much for being such a big help!
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! This is definitely the best bottom bracket repair video on CZcams. You explain it in depth in an honest way, unlike many of these fancy bike repair uppity mechanic dudes. I love that you're working on your rusty old bike, covered in grease. I get tired of seeing unridden, untouched bikes in repair videos. Very removed from my world...
Excellent!!! The best and most clear how to service your bottom bracket on an old bike. I only have old bikes and it's only the moving parts that wear out over time.
Awesome video, I learned a lot! This is one of the only videos I have seen that goes into detail explaining every part and how to fully disassemble it, bravo!
Best video tutorial I have seen on this subject. Thanks.
Very clear verbal explanations and accompanying visuals. Concise yet full of just enough explanation. Thank you!
Congratulations, this is the best video for bottom bracket service ever!! Thank you
Just one more thing!! When this guy devides only work on the bike is needed....he's not shy about NOT TALKING ANYMORE!! THIS is when you know this guy JUST WANTS TO MAKE A GOOD INSTRUCTIVE VIDEO! - 10/10 to this guy !!

Nicely done with every step explained. Thank you!
Absolutely helpful for me, I have watched other videos from your channel, stuff became very clear to me! My wife her bike is really top notch again now!
It's been said many times here but I'll say it again... GREAT VIDEO! Thanks for taking the time to make it.
What an excellent video. You are a true teacher. Thank you.
I'm getting noise and rumble from my BB so this will be useful when I open it up to take a look.
Thanks from a US based Hoyle.
Brad
Video is easy to follow and the step by step is great. Thanks!
Very appreciative of this effort. The detail here is comprehensive without being too much. Keep up the great work!

So far the best tutorial I've seen thanks mate, appreciate it, awesome.
Good comprehensive video that doesn't leave you guessing.
Thanks for the video, it's very helpful, specially here in Brazil where this 3 piece system bb is very common. You're very concise and patient too. Thank you again for sharing. Success for you and your channel!
Thanks for the video. I have seen many other similar ones but yours is better because you explain how how the tools work to remove the bottom bracket.
So good. Best bottom bracket vid ever, taught me a lot

This video had saved me twice now. Thank you.

This video may have been around for a while, but more relevant than ever for fixing my mountain bike in the middle of all the pandemic shortages.
Glad to hear!
Thank you the most specific video I have seen. Helped me a lot.
great video and the details were explained very well. Thanks for helping a trainee bike mechanic
This was a great video! I like how you explain the reasons for everything too, not just simply show how to do it. Now I can fix my old Schwinn:)
Really great videos! Super helpful, well done and very easy to follow. Thank you for putting the effort into producing them!
Super helpful! I watched a guy take off a bottom bracket tonight at my bike co-op now I know how he did it. Thanks!
Excellent video. I feel confident doing it myself now. You covered all of the questions I had
Thanks friend! Your directions are by far the most simplistic and clear around the channel. I am attempting to set up a single speed bike with no knowledge at all and suddenly this part became crystal clear! I 'll search for other videos you have.
Thank you very much for uploading this tutorial !
Thanks for the great videos. You have a good mechanical understanding and explain things in good detail.

An excellent video tutorial. Thanks for this.
Very well explained, thanks!
Thank you! Very easy & well-explained!
Great video, I'm in the process of refurbishing my dads bike at the moment. When I took apart the bottom bracket this axle type was what I found which I've never seen before and your video has just answered all the questions I had fantastic!!! Far better than the other videos I've seen of which there aren't many on this axle type ☺
No additional advice, it sounds like you are doing all the right things, just keep working at it!
Great tutorial, very clear and easy to understand. Thanks!
Excellent video. Made me understand what I was doing wrong and the special tools I needed to complete the task. Thank you!

Thank you!!!! Great video!! Very well explained.
thank you so much for this, i come back to this video often just to refresh my memory. concise and to the point !
No problem, I'm glad it's still helpful all these years later!
Best bike videos on youtube, for SURE. learned a lot.
Excellent! Nicely detailed, well explained video. I started bicycling a few months ago. I cannot help thinking that I am learning about bicycles the hard way... by doing things wrong and then paying the price (figuratively, if not literally).
I'm restoring an old 1980s Apollo road bike with this crank/bottom bracket setup and have been looking for an easy to understand tutorial for disassembly so I can prep for repainting and parts replacement.
THANK YOU for this video! it was extremely helpful!
Great tutorial. I replaced mine with a sealed BB. It was confusing figuring out what size to buy, but the guys at nashbar were super helpful.
Great video one of the best on youtube thanks again.
