- Unfortunately not all games get localized for the western market and sometimes, the games we miss out on are some of the best. Tetris Battle Gaiden is one of those games and it may very well be the best Tetris game ever.... or at least, one of the best.
Also I should probably talk a bit about my absence from CZcams huh? This is my first video in over a year and while I've been wanting to make videos for quite a while, I honestly just chalk up the downtime to laziness. I had an excuse when I was in school but ever since I've graduated I've had plenty of free time and I just never sat down and started working seriously on a video project until just recently. Hopefully, I can get the ball rolling again a little. I want to make content at a semi-regular basis (like one video every month or two) and I've got ideas lined up so HOPEFULLY I can deliver. I'm not going to promise anything going forward though, but we'll see what happens haha. If you've read this far thanks for that and thanks for checking out the video! I truly appreciate it!

That said battle gaiden is one I would know and play often, I've also played its PlayStation sequel Tetris x (which was a big let down)
On the edge though if it's the best as I'm partial to magical Tetris challenge and back in the day Tetris ds for its online multiplayer modes, for single player Tetris dx and Tetris ds and Tetris 2 bombliss are faves
And suddenly, Puyo Puyo Tetris was released worldwide last year
I prefer the japanese console versions though
Battle puzzle games are awesome, but woah, the next piece preview being shared between two players is awesome - that completely changes the dynamic. Excellent! Also, so glad to see you in video form again! :D

Tetris BG is the optimal competitive Tetris. A pinnacle unsurpassed since 1993.
There is an arcade game called Tetris Giant that came out in 2009. its a game played 6x7 tetris board and has a variaty of singleplayer and multiplayer modes. Notably in VS. mode, the game uses the same idea of people pulling from the same bag. Save for the fact that the space on each board is extreemly limited so the games can be very hectic and fun!

yooooooo Shaman is DEFINITELY overpowered. His level 1 is far too good.
Whenever anyone mentions Tetris variants they never mention Magical Tetris. If you have never heard of it I highly recommend checking it out. The different pieces you can send to your opponent are what set the game apart.

Believe me, but the best 1on1 version of Tetris is Wartris (released in 1999 for Playstation 1)
Personally, Tetris Elements is my preferred version of...well, Tetris, but this looks like an interesting variation on the game, namely with the multiplayer mode.
Gorgeous game. I love the feel of the controls too - despite its age and therefore is missing many modern features - it feels great. There's a loose feel to them while still remaining accurate. It's best companion piece on SNES is Super Tetris 2 + Bombliss which is from the same developer. I'd also have a look at Tetris64 on the N64 - the unknown N64 tetris game. It came out really early. It has a gimmick which is a mode that uses a bio sensor to set the piece speed synchronised with your pulse but the main game itself dispenses with that and is really nice - there's an option menu that lets you enable modern features like rotation scheme select and wall kicks. Has an excellent 4 player battle mode with a novel garbage system that lets you direct it one line at a time to different opponents. I suspect not many in the West have even heard of it but it's well worth a look.

I found it is called TETRIS PLUS it has this Little Gnomes they keep climin up every block you put out into there's spikes if they get close they panic and start to run and if you eliminate those block they calm down and the spikes go up.

OHOHOOOOOO, MY FRIEND. THEN YOU GOTTA PLAY MAGICAL TETRIS CHALLENGE, ALSO FOR THE N64!
While it may not have character classes like in battle gaiden, magical tetris challenge was also heavily competitive-oriented. It has this one special mode, called MAGICAL TETRIS. After all, It's not called MAGICAL TETRIS FOR NOTHING!
OH! You thought that game title was just cute little figurative nickname, implying that the game can be *magically fun*? NO!
there are MAGIC POWERUPS! XD
Basically, when you clear two or more lines, a bit of "MAGIC" is sent to your opponent's *garbage* multiplier. The muiltiplier keep growing until your opponent clears more than two lines, to counter your multiplier which sends it back to you
The first level multiplier just gives out different colorful odd-shaped pieces, such as bracket shaped piece that looks like THIS => " [ ". Other times, it can staircase pieces, long T-shaped pieces, 5-block white straight lines, or my personal favorite Z-SHAPED PIECES.
But the fun doesn't end there!
LEVEL 2 MULTIPLIER.
This is when things start getting interesting. If you have just finished sending your opponent a level 1, and they haven't yet either cleared a multiple line or used up all the junk pieces you sent them, you can start STACKING MULTIPLIERS. Level two is when the game starts sending them different sized SQUARES. Depending on how much *magic* you have sent them at once or in rapid succesion before they can counter you or clear their play area, the squares start out in ANNNOYING, SEEMINGLY ENDLESS BOUNDS of 2x2 green squares, or they can grow to blue 3x3 squares, RED 4x4 squares if you're daring and bold, silver metal textured 5x5 SQUARE BRICKS! x'DDDDD
*side note* if you manage to clear 5 lines with the white straight piece, you will acheive what is affectionately named a "PENTRIS", the prefix "pent-", meaning "five". obviously this is a multiple line clear, and will gaurantee you a level 2 garbage multiplier to the opponent (assuming that haven't already countered it with their multiple line clearings). They will be bombarded and be FORCED to use up ALL THOSE NASTY REPEATING green 2x2 squares before they can start using the normal pieces again. Seems rather harmless, but this can radically mess up their tactics and quickly fill up their playable area x3.
BUT WAIT! THAT'S NOT IT! THERE'S MORE!
You thought the game couldn't POSSIBLE get any more HECTIC, did you? WRONG! x3
BEHOLD. LEVEL 3 MULTIPLIER.
Behold, the motherload of garbage pieces EVER INVENTED IN TETRIS! xDD.
But first of all, you know how, in every tetris game, the game will show a tiny little icon of what piece is about to be given to you op the top of the screen? it's the same here, but with not with level l3 multiplier pieces. NOOOOO HOOOO HOOO HOOO.
To add an EXTRA level of excitement and fun to the game, the devs decided to give the icon previews for these massive pieces a simple red "!" exclamation, denoting certain doom. Unless their game area is near or completely empty, once you send a wave of these gigantic bad boys, you have practically won the game, and it's almost impossible to recover from these pieces.
POSSIBLE GOD TIER MAGIC PIECES CAN APPEAR IN RANDOM ORDER FROM ONE OF THE FOLLOWING 3 VARIATIONS:
5-BLOCK WIDE SYMMETRICAL DIAMONDS,
5-BLOCK WIDE STAIRCASE PIECES,
LAST BUT NOT LEAST,
5-BRICK WIDE PYRAMID TRIANGLES
So needless to say, Magical tetris challenge is by far, my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE TETRIS GAME OF ALL TIME. No other tetris game has ever taken this unique approach to powerups even 20 years later after the game's original release on Jan. 14th 1999.
Sure, many past tetris games (and many to come as well) have had standard garbage mechanics that just send basic stacking ROWS of grey garbage, but that is just boring and one dimensional compared to this fav game of mine. YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY GIVE IT A TRY! x3
If you wanna see this game for yourself, please watch this tas of the game, where you can basically see all tiers of blocks being sent to the ai all once, decimating the ai opponent within a minute or two.

I know your comment is 5 months old, but check the upload date of this video, it was in 2016, which was before it was localized for the rest of the world to play.

I still like NullpoMino, Tetris Effect, Jstris, Tetris Friends, Tetris Battle, Tetris Online Poland, Not Tetris 2, Tetresse, etc.
Also about the statement where you said there was basically no effort to recreate the mechanics, that is so false. IOS EA Tetris used to have pieces that move like that, many small games have character selections, power-ups are common on TF, great soundtracks on Tetris Effect (but that wasn't out at the time of release, but even Tetris 2 has like 5 songs). NullpoMino you cam customize easily to have any of these, as well as the SFX and multiplayer.
