Digits 1-5 appear in each marked region. No digit can be within a (chess) king's move of an identical digit. No orthogonal or diagonal trio of adjacent digits is an arithmetical sequence in order. So e.g. 123, 531 or 345 are forbidden but e.g. 132, 513 and 245 are allowed.

So hard not to apply normal Sudoku rules!
it's so hard that the error checker still mark faults for same digit in the columns of the clues, while it is actually permitted by the rules

_"An arithmetic sequence (or arithmetic progression) is a sequence of numbers such that the difference from any succeeding term to its preceding term remains constant throughout the sequence"_ (From Wikipedia).
So, *2-4-5* is not an arithmetic sequence.
However, the rules originally used the expression _"arithmetical order,"_ rather than _"arithmetic sequence,"_ and the examples of allowed sequences did not include 2-4-5.
So, Mark's doubt is legitimate.

I initially didn't catch that Mark read out slightly different wording to what we could see on the screen, and not just the given examples, either. I had to rewind and replay the rules section to understand his confusion.
I think a good case could be made for saying 2-4-5 are in arithmetical order, but they are not an arithmetical sequence in order. The change to the wording was helpful.
@@RichSmith77yes absolutely correct. Mark’s examples he wrote for us were helpful. Maybe in Aad’s original language or regional instruction they use ‘arithmetic order’ to mean something different than what I would use in USA.
Yes this was a pleasant change and had to keep reminding myself to switch out of sudoku mode, but I found it curiously hard to scan.
This was so fun! It was wild to see how different my solve path was, I did a lot of going round the grid colouring based off of where things had to be in other boxes on account of how the shapes fit together, and eliminated 2 and 5 in that top row based on the sequences quite late, with the whole puzzle then coming together off of that quite quickly. Always so interesting to see how different people approach a new ruleset!
17:50: "5s in one of those three, but it's probably not worth noting." That observation rules out the corner marked 5 right above the middle of "those three" placing a 5 to the ledt of it, which also places the 5 in the I pentomino.
18:29 finish. I wound up making mine very colorful, which helped for some of the logic. An excellent puzzle!

I agree with you, Mark, that the unusual rulesets or applications of expected rules in unexpected contexts makes puzzling fun and a good exercise for the old gray cells. I have played suguru puzzles and enjoy them, partially because they require me to set aside the digits repeating in a row or column restriction that sudoku has. I think that one of the most interesting things about your video, though was finding and explaining what specific interpretation of the rules was correct, and then demonstrating it. Thanks for this video!
Mark does make good videos pointing out things that I might gloss over and he deserves credit for being a great you tuber
15:23 for me. I had never seen this ruleset before, but I really enjoyed it. Very interesting puzzle!
Shheeesh! Yet another in my current bad-luck run of "easy" puzzles that take me forever to solve. I just could not see how the sequence rule could help me much, and only had a few digits placed for ages. Only after lots and lots of coloring and trial-and-error did I finally find a few new eliminations that let me get to the end, in just shy of 3 hours. Total time: 02:58:48@#1192.

Beautiful juicy logic jewel. The absolute indiscussed power of *mandatory chaos* in a non-sudoku land. Both King's move and forbidden sequences force a chaotic distribution of digits. Even the regions are *irregular* with different shapes❗️

Fascinating puzzle. I watch a lot of your videos but don't class myself as intelligent enough to solve them myself. However because you're so trained in the usual rules I found myself shouting at the screen on numerous occasions as my untrained brain found this rule set a lot more straight forward.
Very fun! Lots of scanning the grid and reminding of rules, but no huge obstacles to overcome 😊

I finished in 99 minutes. I had screwed up the rules and thought it said any order of arithmetic digits, so that messed me up for an hour. On my third attempt, I completed it, but it was so difficult to try to avoid Sudoku. Great Puzzle!

Oh interesting, my main break-in was via coloring from right to left, but it seems like mark found a different way. Really fun puzzle either way!, give it a shot if you havent yet since it's relatively approachable :]

28:30 was my time. a lot of thinking.
33:10. I found it hard to scan for arithmetic sequences, because there are 8 potential sequences starting from every cell. I did most of it using geometry and colours, then used the sequences to disambiguate later.
The observation at 8:10 could have done so much more work at the start identifying where digits had to match
Interesting in that the anti-arithmetical-progression only affects neighboring pentaminoes, but that eventually the effect percolates across the entire grid. Hard to get it started but then it picks up very nicely. I found it useful after placing a few 1, 3, 5s to just pencil-mark the rest of the grid (or at least some of the pentaminoes) and then pare it down. using the anti-king and anti-progression rules.
It affects within the same pentomino as well.
Surely you also couldn't have 333 in any direction? As that is an arithmetical sequence with difference of 0?

Finished in 43:08 with minor help from the video.
The rules were not written properly. An “orthogonal trio of adjacent digits” also includes L-shaped trios. I wasted a lot of time because of this. Unnecessarily.
This is not true. Orthogonal trio of adjacent digits only applies to straight adjacent digits that is horizontal, vertical and diagonal. Otherwise, the solution would even be invalid, look at r3c7, r4c7, r4c8, which forms an L-shape of 123.
Okay, maybe I'm just being pedantic, but this was not all 12 pentominoes! (I believe the missing ones are the C and V pentominoes.)
I spent hours as a child in school fruitlessly trying to put all frigging 12 of them into a single 5x12 grid, and I could never get it to work right-- that grid shape is burned into my brain, and as soon as I saw this one, I was like "that's too short."
Mine checks properly, but there is an issue with the one I got in the link. Sometimes the pencil marks follow regular sudoku rules and are in red if it crosses a line with a digit in it. The remaining digit ends up in the right place, but its weird it did that.
I know - that freaked me out a bit too.
I had to turn off conflict checker and "check pencil marks" with mine. It did turn itself back on for some reason as well. Maybe just a glitch with my browser or something
The program marks it wrong if you repeat a digit in a column even though the rules don't say anything about it...

And Oh please don't be mad at Aad for not communicating the rules to me - he's operating in a second language. Awwww. He very accurately referred to arithmetic sequences in the ruleset. But we won't be too mad at Mark for misunderstanding those clear rules, being so stuck up in his 1 language... No compunction whatsoever, LOL...
He modified the rule that we see...as he's saying in the part of the video you're referring to.
As he reads the rules that he's seeing (@4:15), they originally read "No orthogonal or diagonal trio of adjacent digits is in *arithmetical order*". He amended this in the rules we see both in the video and in the puzzle to be "...in an arithmetic sequence in order", which does help clarify the meaning. (He also changed the last example of an allowed sequence from 435 to 245, to further clarify it wasn't just sequences that are in ascending/descending order that are not allowed).
I can understand Mark's slight confusion. While 245 are certainly not an *arithmetic sequence*, I could see them as being described as being in arithmetical order.
