- I had the pleasure of speaking to Meagan Roth (Senior Manager of Launch and Test Operations), Shea Ferring (Senior Vice President, Engineering) and Jordi Paredes Garcia (Alpha Chief Engineer) about Firefly's Alpha rocket and their Blue Ghost lunar lander!

From the goofy guy wearing a spacesuit in his bedroom making videos, to exclusive access to the space industry around the country. You're living the dream Tim, keep up the great work
Yup, that’s why we love Tim, he is the personification of how passion and hard work can make you really good at whatever you love!
Meaghan might even give him some if he asks nicely.
Well said! I 100% agree.
@@pinkypink5161 da fuq?
I’ve been following EDA several years. Tim is so knowledgeable. Most importantly he has integrity.
Jordi's comments are so important, and I feel like they could be easily missed. Building rocket engines is truly an art form just like he mentioned. Every armchair quarterback who says "why don't we just make more Saturn V rockets / F1 engines?" or the doubters who can't understand what is so hard about replicating something that we've done before should be pointed to this video. The bottom line is that the artists who made that happen are gone. As much as we're more advanced today, every engine is in a way starting over with a new group of artists learning to perfect their latest work.
Yeah, they re purposed a bunch of stuff too for saturn that was originally designed for something else. The Engines were designed for a intercontinental missile when they thought nuclear payloads would need to be much larger mass wise then turned out to be true. They later re purposed it for Saturn.
I need a video that lists all the companies involved in space transport, their history and their vehicles. So many small companies that I know nothing about.
What a great time for space transport !
There is one on this, in this channel, some 1-2 years ago. Have a look in the library
You might wanna checkout Wikipedia as well.
Firefly is such a cool company, wow. Their senior engineers seem so deep in the woods. It’s really cool to see how excited and passionate they are about their baby.
It’s so cool that you’ve managed to get access like this to so many places, keep it up Tim! We love it!
My company worked on the "flamey" end of the Firefly motor!! They have some amazing machining on those parts!! Solid copper!!
Many, probably most currently flying engines start with the same process of casting a copper alloy blank, turning it and milling the cooling channels. But then there are differences in how exactly the channels get enclosed. Firefly started with electrolytic deposition of an outer jacket, same as used for Space Shuttle engines. But in the previous interview Tom said they wanted to switch to brazing a pre-made steel jacket -- it is a tricky process, but it is also much faster.
After copper comes the bronze age. Imagine the possibilities!
@@cogoid Tom Markusic?
@@hawkdsl The material used for the engines is technically a bronze. Pure copper does not have enough strength at high temperature, and small amount of chromium and zirconium are added to improve that.
@@highpointsights Yes. In the interview he went into a surprising amount of details regarding their fabrication process -- how they EDM the small holes for the throat cooling at the bottom of the grooves, and then fill the grooves with wax, and deposit to outer shell. I think they even have pictures somewhere on the site with the part half way done.
Usually you do not see that many details about contemporary engines. I would say they show more than anybody else at this time, if you do not count "amateurs" like Copenhagen Suborbitals.
That Jordi guy really knows his stuff. Great interview there, love the attitude when it came to solving the connector issue from flight 1, and the different approach as a "flight" vehicle as opposed to a prototype.
Now that's what i call a weekend present! Thank you Tim
So awesome you got to do this! The hard work you've put in for so many years to get where you are now, you definitely deserve it!. Also great video with good questions and information
Really exciting stuff coming up in the near future, look forward to it, well done Firefly. A great time to be interested in space, space exploration and technology, what a renaissance!
That was amazing!! Thanks Tim, and Meagan, Shea & Jordi! Jordi's interview was so interesting - it's like Elon has said, the biggest project is developing the manufacturing system.
Tim,
You're an inspiration. Your passion for rockets and space flight drove you to where you are today which is phen-normenal 😊
You show how anyone who follows their heart, their passion, "works" hard at what they love, can be a success. Thank you🙏
I love the way Jordi explains things
Keep up the good work Tim. Always enjoy watching all your videos
Self taught Tim asking the right questions. He makes people comfortable and they just open up to him. Great Interviews.
Hello Tim.
Hope your weekend is going well.
Love the channel, lots of great information on every episode.
Thank you for everything you do. 👍👍
What an amazing interview!!! Wow the access and information is amazing!! Great job Tim !!!

Thanks Tim and Firefly. It's great to and inside look at what's taking place and an explanation on how components work, and advances in design. Looking forward to the flight.
Brilliant. Love to see more videos like this from other companies
really cool, Tim .. Thanks for sharing
This guy and NASASpaceflight are doing a lot more for the space/rocket community than journalists (mainstream medias).
Lamestream media is a farce, it's just the propaganda wing of the globalist empire
@@dmurray2978 you're goddamn right.👍
They're the REAL journalists now.
Thats just not true. EDA amd NSF might be the face but there journalists like Eric Berger and Jeff Foust break most of the news.
Because media journalists can even to bother to Google for 10 minutes to prepare for interviews.
Gotta admire the level of access you get!
Absolutely inspiring to see the sharp edge of innovation happening live!
We are nerding out with you Tim🤓 Thanks so much for another great insight video.
Thanks for putting the acronyms on screen, space stuff has so many of them! as someone who is interested but not fully on top op of everything it really helps.

It wouldve been nice for him to say they are working with Rocket Lab for Blue ghost. It is not all built in house vertically integrated like he said. Rocket lab is providing solar panels all software and will be the backup operation center.
The energy of these people is so infectious. You can really feel the love they have for what they do. And it's so incredible that we, through Tim, get this level of access! I for one can't get enough of content like this.
Fingers crossed for the launch!
Up close and personal indeed.. nice one Tim. 😜

Very cool interview. Seeing them right next to the 'flamey end' like that makes it clear just how small Alpha is. I hope Firefly makes it to success, there's got to be a great shaking out of all these small launchers, and Rocket Lab is kinda the default leader...

Wow, that are some lovely people working on that awesome rocket!
This was a fantastic interview.
Great video ! Really interesting.
So cool to have engineers talk about their passion. They obviously love to talk to someone who can listen at an intelligent level. A timely video for me, Alpha and its characteristics had faded in my mind - so many rockets, so little mind. Happy to get a bit of info on the Antares collaboration - but will Miranda be tap-off or not? Impossibly large? Good luck Firefly!
Firefly is blessed to have all these awesome employees. Seems like a great bunch of people.
Are you saying that just because she's pretty?
I can’t believe you were here on base! That’s so cool. I’m stationed here and I rock my Everyday Astronaut merch around base all the time. Now I definitely have to get the hoodie too.

We've missed you, Tim! Glad to see you back.
I have a hard time keeping track of all these companies & what types of engines they use. It would have been nice if you'd introduced it somewhere along the line, what fuel they use, what kind of cycle, anything unique about them, etc.
May I suggest this video? It dives into firefly and other small sat launchers! czcams.com/video/A5Sfw58jApo/video.html

Great video stud
Can't wait to see the power of the tap-off cycle! :)
If they have success with this rocket, I wonder how long they'll keep the four engine configuration?..
It seems to be tempting to go for a larger diameter and more engines, when you have a working engine design..
Great vid Tim and Team

Hi Tim first to view I watched you since 2019. Quick question when do you think Artemis 1 will be launched
