- Today we’ll be talking to the crew of Polaris Dawn and we’ll dive into some fun history on fighter jet training, we’ll talk about some of the physics involved, the G suit and nerd out on the jets, because I love learning about all this cool stuff and I assume you do too.

5 years ago I subbed to a small CZcams Space enthusiasts doing kerbal videos and now look, here you are, your own studio, interviews with space explorations movers and shakers, and flying around in high performance jets. Amazing, its been one heck of a journey to watch its been amazing to experience it with you.

When you started taking pictures of yourself in an old Soviet Space Suit, I'll bet you never thought you would have been flying in formation with an old Soviet Mig years later. So awesome.

‘Old’.. lol the 29s are still fairly current in the Russian and Russian supplied arsenals around the world. An ‘old’ Mig you can still find is like a 15, 17 or 19. Think N Korea still uses them as current tech lol. 29s are barely able to be considered old. Is a Iphone 13 old? That’s basically what a mig 29 is in terms of aviation tech

@@aauwhatitdo1582 yeah but it’s really not even a full generation out of the current gen fighters.. still more in use than the newest gen jets.. I get it’s been flying quite a long time.. but Aviation doesn’t move at the speed of phone or PC iterations.. in those terms, it’s literally like a iphone 13. If you say, and old Iphone.. you think of a 12 or 13? Lol I don’t. If you ask, what’s an old US jet, what comes to mind? An F18? I don’t think so.. I think of a Sabre or Phantom or something from generations ago.. that’s kinda old for a jet. Calling last gen jets that are still the majority of what’s in use, old, is not an accurate statement imo. You have to have perspective on the tech involved and the lifespan of these platforms. 40+ years is quite normal for an aviation platform.. with many minor revisions along the way. I guess if you’re younger than the airframe.. you might think they’re ‘old’. But that is from an incorrect perspective.

I was thinking the same thing. At some point or another he's gonna get a chance to go up in a Dragon ( or years from now a Starship )

Every time I watch one of your videos I'm reminded that this is so much more then a CZcams thing. The quality, of production level, the research put behind each video, and the fact that you get to actually go out and have hands on experiences like this one make your videos feel so far ahead of the CZcams platform. This feels closer to Netflix Documentary style content and I am so thankful to get to enjoy work that I can tell has meaning and heart felt care put into it! Dude, you don't know how jealous I am of you, and how proud. I carried a Jet Passenger card while I was in the Air Force, and got rides in the T-33, T-38, F-101 and F-106. So I know where you were this first time. You are vicariously giving this old vet another ride. Keep up the good work! And have fun!

Tim, I have to admit that I got a bit emotional watching this video. You've worked so hard building your business over the years. It's so good seeing it pay off for you! Congratulations!
I felt the same way. Tim's commitment to education is phenomenal, and even in a video where he gets to experience something so awesome (and it's so well deserved), he doesn't lose that educator edge. He asked and answered a really relevant question while also giving a further insight into Jared's professionalism that shows how these missions are happening. These are true missions run in a manner that starts to refine processes that previously only national space programs ran.
I totally feel the same way! It was emotional seeing Tim's hard work pay off. So happy for you man! Nothing but smiles while watching this.

I don’t know about luck; Tim’s worked pretty hard to learn all of this information (and sweat a lot in a Russian pressure suit). In the few years I’ve been following him, he’s easily covered a Master’s Degree worth knowledge and close to a Doctorate, with Kerbal Space experiments and rocket engine research. He probably values his CZcams achievement plaque more than a degree. I think he values the friends he’s made too, including Elon Musk, who seems to appreciate Tim also. I have also enjoyed Tim’s “bumper” music, that he wrote and performed several years ago. (I guess he’s been too busy for new compositions.)

I've seen plenty of hard workers who don't achieve this level of "living the dream", so I don't think acknowledging the amount of opportunities that had to line up on time with his willingness and ability to take the chance does anything to discount from the amount of hard work he put in.

Tim, I'm a former Naval Aviation Officer who pulled a few Gs myself for awhile. Obviously, it was something I'll never forget. I'm sure you'll also never forget what Jared Isaacman gave you the opportunity to experience. Thank you so much for clearly explaining to us why this sort of thing is still important. I think Sarah Gillis and Anna Menon described it very well how in intense situations a persons awareness and ability to function is very limited, and that this training is helping them to be able to continue to function even if they encounter an off-nominal situation.

I'm happy content creators like Tim, Scott and Destin have been the types to grow and benefit from their hard work. They rarely seem to let their egos and personal beliefs cloud the message they are trying to deliver. Outside of a couple bad apples that let their channels become politicized, I'd say the CZcams science/space community is a strong group that provides a lot of terrific content. 👍
excellent video. the simple fact that you are getting first hand access to firefly, rocketlab, starship and polaris shows the level of dedication you have for rocketry is clearly recognised by the giants of space, well deserved recognition too.

That was fantastic! I completely understand the "why" behind jet training now. As soon as I saw your brain turn to mush, the penny dropped. Your situational awareness basically dropped to zero, but The Kidd was able to navigate, control, fly in formation and on top of that, be aware of what was going on in the Mig. One of your best videos yet! Peace!

Most jet ride videos are *_all_* about the personal experience of the presenter, not Tim.
Tim nailed his mission once more, in this case by teaching us why astronauts train in fighter jets from the early days, until now.
Years ago I talked my way onto a Texas NASA training facility (pre 911) and was able to land a shuttle simulator. I was also fortunate enough to speak with some NASA T38 pilots, but did not know what questions to ask to get a full understanding of the purpose of the T38 training.
I did not get this perspective until watching Tim's video.
We always learn something important from Tim's productions.

You know, its crazy to see what your channel has evolved into. I've been following since the early beginning where you would wear you that orange high altitude suite in most of your videos. I'm incredibly jealous because I'm a huge fan of soviet era Migs, and pretty much any high speed flying machines. But to see you go from simple short videos that explained the basics of rockets while running around in a heavy, and hot space suite, to riding around, and spending time with the people who will no doubt take our human race to a level that I dreamed of as a child watching "The Jetsons". I love what your doing, and each new video is another mind blowing experience that hopefully one day we might all get a chance to enjoy.
Credit where it is due, the Mig and Sukhoi's are gorgeous planes. What an incredible opportunity Tim. Thanks for taking us along and for the nerdy parts. My flight sim playing brain was tickled.
Those mission specialists really explained mental overload perfectly, including how you overcome it with practice.
I trained to skydive using AFF, so even my first jumps were from high altitude with a long freefall. I had a lot to focus on and I did it well. But there was a moment on my fifth skydive where I suddenly noticed that I was able to look around and enjoy the view. It hasn't occurred to me before that I was unable to do that because of all the details I was paying attention to. A real eye opening moment.

Just watching this now Tim! So happy to see you enjoy the experience of the fast jet flying. I was a line engineer on Tornado GR1’s and had the luck to backseat up the length of the uk and fly hands off using TFR through the Welsh mountains.
Also some supersonic action fully swept wings. It was awesome. I’d love to do it again!
Of course I did fly on a couple of Concorde test flights after major maintenance checks with just 10 people on board. Flying is awesome

Wow that was a nice one! I had a go in something similar as well and plan to do it annually! I did only 500km/h and 5,5G in a polish Iskra, but was worth it!
As far as the sweep angle is concerned (11:49) you should measure it in the quarter chord line, which would mean that the Albatros doesn't have any or it has a very slight one (under 2-3 degrees).
I've strapped on an ejection seat a few times. Absolutely awesome.
Great video Tim, looks like you had a great time. The only thing that you missed out on was when you were inverted over the Mig you needed to 'flip the bird' as per the original Top Gun.

I was a technician on fighters in the RAAF. One of the perks of the job was to do backseat rides. I've experienced plenty of cool things doing that but the best is, if you can fly a bit, when the pilot lets you fly the jet. I've actually pulled sustained 7G turns and other aerobatics whilst doing that. Great fun :)

Ohhhh my God, Tim. You got to experience something that only a select few have ever gotten to do in their lifetime. Just seeing you smile as you pull those high-G maneuvers reminded me of the many times my dad told me about his incentive flight in an F-15D Eagle when he was in the Air Force. Like you, he told me all about it with such joy and a twinkle in his eyes. He could still recall the moments of putting on his G-Suit, getting into the aircraft, and then taking off. Not to mention he would speak with such enthusiasm describing the "Elephant on your chest" feeling on the high G turns. He loved every second of it.
Also, since I'm currently studying to get an Airframe and Powerplant certification, you talking about dihedral, supersonic flight, how jet engines work, and such, really made me go "Oh yeah, I remember talking about that in class" and gave me even more initiative to study and work hard to earn my certification.
Congrats, on being able to earn your wings in an Alpha Jet Tim. You earned them.
I was lucky enough to sit in a fighter jet, but never lucky enough to fly in one. I’m living vicariously through Tim! It’s so great that he’s able to do some of the things that he has done! And a great part of that is the fact that he put so much into what he’s doing, it shows, thank you Tim!

I worked on fighter aircraft in the military. To this day I still love to see people fly in them and wish I had had the opportunity to do it as well
Tim you are tops in bringing the technical to us private citizens. As a retired heavy construction project mgr civil engineer I understand much of the stuff, but you have a wonderful knack of working with the actual folks and explaining the details!
I've never seen such a cockpit scene = slow, easy to comprehend and your shared reactions really put it all in context.

Tim, aka callsign "Everyday". Great exposition on why astronaut training still includes the constant use of T-38s (and now Jared's jets). (IIRC the MiG is his and the other jets belong to his Draken company.) Sarah and Anna's comments at the end made this super clear.
Why doesn't somebody give me these rides? I mean, is it so hard to pick me up out of my recliner and shuffle over to a jet? Just make sure there's a big cup holder.
