Thank you so much for this video!! I’m very new to mandala rock painting and I wondered what people use and how they seal their work so this tutorial was extremely helpful for me! You do beautiful work and I love that you don’t do the sped up versions. Your tips are very appreciated too!
Thank you so much for your feedback on this. I'm so glad you found me on here. I always struggle with the question of should I speed up or not speed up some of my videos. It seems that CZcams tends to show the ones that are sped up more for some reason. But I just keep on doing what I'm doing and helping those I can with the tricks and tips that I've learned along the way.
I love painting and I hope that other people come to enjoy it as they find these videos. Thank you again for taking a minute to say hi and let me know your thoughts. I hope you have a fantastic day.
So #beatiful Miranda thanks for sharing
Thanks for your quick reply. I've been painting animals on rocks since 1996 & I painted rocks about the size of a tub of butter but I use a foam brush that is about 2 " wide. I only poured out what I thought I needed as I could always pour out a bit more. You do beautiful work & do what works for you. Also I subbed.
Fantastic and truly useful video. Thanks so much x
Glad it was helpful!
Great information and perfect timing for me to view this video. I'm sealing a series of painted rocks to resemble THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR🐛 along with a painted brick to resemble the book📚. This will be a gift for my sisters garden.
Your rocks are so pretty! I used a cookie cooling rack from dollar tree to dry my rocks on and if not careful it scrapes the back just a little. So I am now experimenting on coating the rack with a rubber like adhesive sealer used for plumbing. Husband does handy man work on the side so I'll dig into his stash...lol. Hopeful it'll do the trick. Thank you for the sealer recommendation and how to. Really appreciate it.
My pleasure! On my art stones I have been applying felt so they will not scratch surfaces :)
@@MirandaPitrone Great idea, I will do that instead. And the liquitex is perfect, the rocks look good and well protected now. No more scratches. I watch several rock sealing videos and you're the best! Thank you for sharing what you do and use.
Thank you for this video! Very helpful!❤ I will pass this great information to my friends! I haven't had the look I wanted from sprays and the smell is powerful! This looks great!❤ thank you!❤
It is! And not smelly😏💞
beautiful!
Thank you!
Thanks for all the information
My pleasure 🥰
Thank you! Your rocks looks great! I use krylon UV-Resistant claar gloss spray. I may use it alone or I spray my rocks once to get the UV protection then put a thin coat of resin on them for that extra shine and glass-like finish.
Great tip!I am glad to have people chime in...especially about the sprays because I will not use them
Thank you for showing me how.
Thank you, I’ll definitely be trying the foam brushes
They are so helpful :)
Beautiful
Thank you
Thank you!
I am going to try this because I have been using the spray and the shine is good but the smell is horrible and it sticks on the rocks for a week or so. Thanks for the great video
Hi Miranda - i went ahead and tried the Liquitex on my pet portrait in pencil and it worked! Not sure if it was because I had first sprayed it a couple times, but I’m so happy I ran across your video! Thank you so much! I wanted to post a pix of it to show you but I’m not able to…
Fantastic! I am so happy ot worked for you!. I was going to tell you that I was in unable to answer your question. I don't use sprays at all anymore so I have no idea how it would have reacted with the liquitex. I am so glad to hear that it worked out for you. Way to be courageous and go for it! I love it
So pretty! I love your designs. I make handmade cards. I wonder how the acrylic paint dots would work on heavy weight paper or even canvas sheets? I am definitely going to try it. Thanks for the inspiration.
Jani Lewis I paint card stock and I have not had any issues. And they make a wonderful addition to gift-giving
Thank you so much Miranda, may I ask have you ever did a rock mandala of the tree of life, I would really like to try to do something like that. Your tutorials are fantastic.
Great idea! I have not...maybe someday. Thank you for your kind words
Sopretty
thank you
How long after this sealer is applied can it be put outside? I have dishwasher safe mod podge and it says 30 days, which is a little disappointing.
Hi Miranda, I drew this pix in pencil of a pet on a rock that passed away for some friends and I did spray it with a clear semi gloss, however, my friends want to put the stone in their yard and i know with the elements the drawing will be ruined… since I sprayed it, would i be able to use this Liquitex on the rock without ruining it?
Suggestion for placement, the bottom of a fish bowl.
Hi Miranda, your work is beautiful. I was wondering why you used such a large brush & why put the varnish on the brush instead of a lid of some kind so you could dab the brush in that to load it then use any extra in the lid to use on the rock????
Jan Smith thank you. I use a large brush so that I can cover the stone in less swipes because the more you work the varnish the tackier it becomes and it starts to get sticky and leave marks. I don't put it in a lid because then it has more exposure to the air and the same problem occurs it starts to get sticky and tackier. This is also why I tend to do multiple Stones all at the same time. Then I don't waste any of the varnish that's in the brush because I can use it on most the stones that I have waiting to get there clear coat. You can use a smaller brush for smaller stones. I just want to try to reduce the desire to paint it multiple times because that will ruin the varnish
I airbrush my base coatings and any clear coatings I want to use. Yes, it requires a ventilated space and a mask so you're not breathing airborne paints, etc. However, the finish is perfect.
This is a great tutorial! I use Krylon spray in the garage. I would like to know if there is an odor to it or dangerous chemicals in it like, resin has? I can't have any harmful vapors in the house at all. Thanks for the advice!
No smell really at all. I love it. Been using it for years!
These look beautiful. I'm wanting to seal my first painted rock. I heard spray sealers are good too. Any recommendation?
Not that I know of. I have had a few damage my work. I never use them
Thank you so mich for this! Can you still feel the risen dots through the varnish?
Yes. I usually only need one coat of varnish. 💗😊
I have used this varnish for years on canvas paintings. I dotted on a happy dotting man made stone a week ago, then vanished with this product. It stuck slightly to my drying rack and when I lifted it the entire painting basically peeled off like a decal. I was super sad. Yesterday, I finished a real stone and another man made stone. I varnished them today and after 10 hours of drying the real stone is dry and the man made stone still feels tacky on the dots that have top dots or a lot of paint. Do you think the using of a natural brush versus the sponge brush could be the difference? Love your work and really appreciate you sharing your knowledge with me.
I am not sure. According to Liquitex it might be the humidity where you are....in your drying area? I have never had that happen. Also The recommendation Liquitex. Ensure the artwork is fully dry before varnishing and allow at least 12 hours drying between coats of varnish. I usually wait 24hrs to be sure
Your work is beautiful and I love your videos. Question though, I can't seem to get your videos to expand. When you rotate the screen to see your videos in full screen, they are vertical. Are all of yours like that?
That was frustrating for many of those videos but I have new software now . Finding the right computer technology to do these videos with difficult at first but I think we're getting the hang of it now. Thank you so much for watching
@@MirandaPitrone gotta luv technology! Glad you were able to figure that out. Stay safe out there!!
@@leasoundslikelee It frustrates me at times. And then when I figure my softwar ouut...they change the upload to CZcams...hahahaha Always keeping me on my toes! Hope you uare well
@@MirandaPitrone I know whatcha mean. 🤦🏼♀️ Yes, doing well. Stay safe ❤️
It's not nearly as shiny as resin, but OH SO much easier to do and for me, has an adequate shine. I will also sometimes brush them with the matte finish for the UV protection that the Liquitex gives and them I spray with a high gloss, (which I'm never sure if they have UV protection).
Wow that sounds like a lot of work
Thank you so much for sharing. I don't like all the mixing, need to wear a mask, and price of resin that's just the only reason I don't use it. It is very shiny and beautiful
@@MirandaPitrone Not really. Takes the same amount of time as applying two coats of the Liquitex.
I think the stone is a kinda slate stone, Lake Erie has a lot of it.
It is soft, whatever it is. :)
Would this work on coasters - ie heat resistent so you can put a coffee cup on it?
Yep. I use it all the time for mine.
Great video. I dislike the pray they make a mess and to much trouble. I ordered these. Do you know if that also works on gel pens? Thanks.
Yes it does! But it depends on the gel pens
it iss better if you can pour it on and not brussh it too much :)
How long do you cure your rocks before putting them outside in the garden?
48 hrs :)
Have you ever sealed rocks painted with POSCA pens.....I was wondering if it makes it streak, using the Liquitex?
i have never had an issue..but if I am concerned about the markers. I give them a few days to dry and then I pour the varnish on the bits with the markers and do not over work it while brushing it on. :)
Sand stone can break easy. They have tiny reflective pieces of glass in it.
Carolyn H. I think Sandstone is usually gritty though isn't it? These rocks are so super smooth and nice to paint them. I don't know maybe I'll never know. Hahaha
Miranda Pitrone I couldn't really tell because it wasn't close enough, but the color of the stoned looked like sandstone.
Carolyn H. Haha...it is tough on video....maybe I will post photos on my facebook art page and that might be easier to see. Thank you sooooo much for trying to help me....it is driving me nuts..lol
Might be a type of slate stone
possibly... :)
I made the mistake of drawing on a rock with a pencil. How can I preserve it?
You want to preserve the pencil art? You can pour the varnish on rather than brush it...or maybe try a spray..many people have great luck with KRYLON. I just do not use sprays
I put this on a stone that had red painted on it and it had a pink tint on it instead of clear. Have you had this problem?
karen palm I have never had any colors run. What kind of paints did you put it over?
it was Deco Art or Craft smart
karen palm I am not sure why that might have happened. Maybe the paint was not 100% dry before sealing it or sometimes overworking it can be an issue.ie..brushing it too many times. May be tested on another stone with the same paints. Just do some dots of different kind of paints and things you want to try to Varnish over to see how it reacts with it.
Just wanted to let you know that I have written one contacted liquitex to ask them why this might have happened. I will let you know when I get an answer
karen palm this is from Liquitex:
Hello,
Thank you for your interest in Liquitex.
Please excuse me for not using your given name. Unfortunately, our system only records email addresses.
It sounds like the artist didn't give their acrylic painting enough time to dry completely or "cure". Even acrylic paintings need to be dry all the way through before varnishing. We suggest waiting at least 72 hours and up to a week, depending on how thick the layers are or what the ambient temperature and humidity is. You can always check if you aren't sure, by moistening a clean, lint free cloth with water and gently rubbing different areas of the painting.
If any color comes off, you'll know the painting isn't totally dry and to give it some more time before varnishing.
Best,
Ann McCarthy
.........................
I usually wait 24hrs..but they say 72 hrs
I think sand stone.
It may be shale stone
possibly?? i Love it either way :)
I've been using a clear spray acrylic to seal my rocks 🪨.
It seems to work okay. It dries in minutes.
I tried epoxy resin but it's too messy and takes too long to dry
Wonderful!I am so happy you found something that works for you. So much of this is trial and error.😉🧡🧡
@@MirandaPitrone Thanks! Your videos are very enjoyable and helpful!
