Our big family had a stereo with a record player that was always playing music. I was the R & B guy in the family. All my brothers and sisters would go around the house singing "Joy and Pain". I wondered why the band was not more famous and travel all over, but I heard Frankie Beverly did not like to fly like me too. They obviously did get around a lot, probably by bus. I had their albums, and this song still sounds really good. They are very talented.

Frankie and Maze's name was "Raw Soul" before Marvin Gaye told them they needed a name change because "Raw Soul" was ugly. I always thought "Raw Soul" was a very appropriate name because Frankie Beverly and Maze always kept their music real and never sold out just to make a dollar bill.
I was about 14 when I first this song in South Africa. I'm.now 50 and still amazed that this group never won any award. This is deep.
