Putting 100% Wool 'Dry Clean Only' Sportcoat Blazer In Washing Machine - Will It Shrink?

- I was wondering how to cold wash a "dry clean only" tweed sport coat blazer, even though it was 100% wool. I purchased the jacket for $4 from a thrift shop, so it had a mothball smell. Paying a laundromat $25 to dry clean the jacket was out of the question, so I decided to cold wash the blazer and hope for the best. Watch the video to see the results.

Thank you ray romano on helping me wash my wool vest
Happy to help, Big Red. Thanks for watching!
😂😂😂
You can also use a good quality shampoo with wool. Wool is, after all, hair. A little white household vinegar in the final rinse should help remove any residue. The smell dissipates quickly.
This is a great suggestion, thanks so much for watching and commenting! How much shampoo do you usually use?
@@JonathanBrowneMenzies Only use about a cap full of shampoo. Obviously a little more if the item is really soiled. You just don't want to create too many suds.
wow thank you!
You have such a great voice for like radio or sports commentary
Hey House of Mendoza, thanks so much for watching ;-)
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!! I got a ridiculous deal on a beautiful black wool coat today! I watched your video and read e few comments, washed it inside out in a laundry bag and it turned out PERFECT!!!! Oh my gosh! I wish I knew this years ago! But better late than never!!! I was so nervous! Lol!! Yaaay!!
Hey Jm, thanks so much for watching! I'm so happy you snagged a great deal and it came out so good in the wash. Same with me, I wish I knew this was possible years ago. I always avoided wool due to the expensive dry cleaning bills. Wishing you all the best Jm, I really appreciate the comment. Enjoy the coat ;-)
@@JonathanBrowneMenzies thanks!! Have a great day! PS I liked your crumpled style!😁🙋♀️
dry clean only: they wash it in a washing machine on delicate and cold water and flat dry it!
Thanks so much for watching and for the added info! Honestly, If I had steamed the jacket and covered it with a plastic "thank you" bag, it would look just like it came from the drycleaner LOL
Is that means i also can wash dry clean only scarf in the same way?
@@rosechow3227 I washed coats in the washing machine the same way and they remained the same. One extra tip when you want to do this is to put your clothes inside out and then in a washing bag. In this way they are 100% protected.
Okay folks so here comes the pitty party and Debbie downer comment. Don't try this at home kids. Wool when it comes in contact with water activates the fibers to interlock in the same process that is used to make felt. This will lead to shrinkage no matter if hot or cold water was used. Depending on the jacket this can be a little shrinkage or a whole lot of shrinkage but it will shrink. When you bring a suit to the dry cleaners they use a chemical solution that is not water that won't cause a suit to shrink, and the steam they use is a chemical steam and not water. Don't ever steam your suits to get the wrinkles out at home and don't leave your suits in the bathroom with a hot shower running. All of these products and the push to move away from drying cleaning and perc is the greatest tragedy in fashion to ever hit Maine Street. Now back to your regular scheduled programming.
@@benkleschinsky you're right. I followed one of these tutorials once and had my beautiful thrifted 70s wool plaid blazer shrunk... I washed with cold water using the delicate mode...but unfortunately it didnt work and and I got really upset and didnt find any solution to undo that. Never did this again.
I just do them in the bath with human shampoo so it doesn't strip the fibres, by just laying it in the bath you have no wrinkles, dry flat over several towels, you can steam them with an iron with a towel over it, BTW human hair conditioner in the final bath load of water makes it feel soft, as we say in Yorkshire UK 'wen I wur a lass' 😊 I used to work in woollen mills, still a reasonable result for an jacket that's been agitated by the washing machine
Thanks so much for watching, Jenny! I didn't even think of washing the jacket in the bath with shampoo and conditioner. I can see how it's gentle on the fibers compared to a washing machine, I'll give it a shot next time. Wishing you a happy holiday season!
Just picked up a wool jacket my self. Thanks for the tips. I got a front loader so I guess I will just dump the detergent and run the cycle because I can't open once it starts the cycle. Anyways, I think from what I read, I would lay the wool garment flat to dry than on a hanger.
Laying the jacket flat is a good move. Enjoy the jacket and thanks for watching!
Listen… yesterday I picked up 2 Micheal Kors wool coats for 6 bucks a pop.. tags still on them and plastic on the zippers - so never been worn..
I wondered how I was going to maintain them, so this helps A LOT..
In fact, I’m heading back to the store RIGHT NOW to pick up the Calvin Klein and the damn Guess one that I didn’t buy for fear of being stuck with 4 coats that says “dry clean only” LMAOOOO 😅
Thanks man👍🏾
Wow Ann, sounds like you scored some great deals! Glad you went back to pick up the Calvin Klein, they should be find in the washer as long as you use cold water. Wishing you a great summer!
@@JonathanBrowneMenziesthank you for your kind words. Same to you too 👍🏾
Wanting to wash our wool blanket in the washing machine. I just might do this!!
Good luck Jessie and thanks for watching!
Rumpled ! Love it get a hand steam for the rumpling if you decide that you don’t like it.
Will do, Danielle. Thanks for the tip and thanks so much for watching!
I just went to the thrift store yesterday and everything I bought is dry cleaning only 😩 I didn’t realize it until I was ready to wash. I will going to try my best to wash the clothes at home. Wish me luck!
You got this! Just make sure you use cold water and put the setting to 'delicates' And air dry, good luck!
Wow what a voice sir just like radio jockey
Thanks for watching, Amit!
John, you sound like Ray Romano. Only not nasal-like. Lol great video!
LOL so many people say that, not sure why but I'll take it as a compliment.....I'm a huge fan of Everybody Loves Raymond! Best of luck with your channel, you have some great content!
I wash all my suits like this. I don’t have woolite so I use regular laundry soap.
Hey Iowa Guy, thanks so much for commenting! I never thought to try using regular laundry soap on wool suits. How long have you been doing it, have any of your suits been damaged? I bet you saved yourself thousands by doing this, much cheaper than the drycleaner.
Nice slippers sparky!
Thanks Vito! They're really comfortable
Love the green pants 👖
Thanks, Claritza! They get a mixed reaction LOL
That’s because they are so cool 😎 it’s not for everybody.
Great video!
Thanks so much for watching, Jordan. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
WAY TO GO PAL. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!
Thanks so much for watching bro, will do!
Tbh, I can’t find any reason to not gently wash wool jackets and coats when you can wash cashmere and wool sweaters at home. The only thing is that I would hand wash a wool jacket with a bit of soaking time because I want to maintain its shapes and decorative features and lay flat to dry. But otherwise, totally agree with you and good job.
Thank you so much for watching and for the info, AL! 'Tis the season for wool and cashmere, Happy Holidays!
Thank you
You're welcome, glad you enjoyed the video!
Nice jacket!
Thanks so much, Irving! I really got lucky finding such a sharp jacket that was also my size.....love thrift store shopping!
Thanks
You're welcome, Nia. Glad the video was helpful, thanks for watching!
$4.00? Holy cow, youre a trifty guy!
Hey Gloria, thanks so much for watching! I love shopping at thrift stores, great deals on gently used clothes. That way, I don't feel so bad if I stain them LOL
@@JonathanBrowneMenzies The thing is I've tried those stores because I've heard they have literally new designer items and all I've found was supper priced old rags. It's great that works for you!!
Try some thrift shops associated with nonprofits like churches. The "big box" thrift stores like Savers or Salvation Army tend to be more expensive and the quality isn't as good. Best of luck!
Ray Ramono launders free jacket
LOL, thanks so much for watching. I still wear this jacket on a regular basis. Hope Ray would approve!
Hello was looking for how to wash a coat. Here in Philippines we Wash them by hand. And now I see ya how ya do it it looks get bigger I think. Maybe need yo iron it.
Hey m28agent, thanks so much for watching, I really appreciate it! I'm glad the blazer got bigger instead of smaller, I can use the room to grow LOL.
I bought a 100 % wool blazer but unfortunately is too big. I was thinking to get it fixed but now I have another idea ! What if I wash it in warm water and it shrinks? Do you think is a good idea or too risky ?
Hey nume prenume, thanks for watching! I would say that's risky. If your blazer is $4 like mine was, then maybe it's an acceptable risk. But I don't think I would try that with a Versace or Armani jacket. Good luck to you though!
Say “$4” again, that was so sexy #thrifterforlife ✨
Thanks for watching, Gaby! That jacket was such a great find, love the thrifting life!
😂😂😂😂😂😂👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 and Yes! #thrifterforlife
Humble man is good
Doesn't look like it shrinked to me. Just needs some special ironing. That style is always in stores.
Hey Frost Flower, thanks so much for watching! Do you mean a steam iron? I was pretty happy with the way it turned out by just hanging it. Glad you think it didn't shrink ;-)
I recommend putting it in a laundry bag
Thanks for watching, Jessica!
Would it work with 1920s coats?
Hey Bioska, thanks for watching! I wouldn't recommend machine washing a 1920's coat if it's delicate or needs to be handled with care. Having said that, if the coat is structurally sound and in good repair, machine washing should work. I guess I would say proceed with caution if you decide to do it, good luck!
Can you add fabric softener???
Hey iamyourfatherhoe, not sure if you can add fabric softener. I personally wouldn't do it myself, the Woolite did a great job. If you try adding fabric softener, let me know how it works.
I tried testing a knit sweater. Bad idea lol
Ahhh sorry aeptacon. What exactly happened, did the sweater shrink or unravel?
@@JonathanBrowneMenzies oh no this was last year before I watched your video lol. It shrunk majorly. It was a risk that I took. It become infant clothing size 😂
Shaking it after washing it also gets the wrinkles and item back into shape
Thanks for the tip, Ally! I'll try that next time for sure, wishing you the best!
@@JonathanBrowneMenzies It's not 100% affective but helps. I do this with most of my loads of washing as it helps most clothing!
You sound a little like Ray Romano 🙂
LOL, I get that comment about once a week, although I personally don't hear any resemblance. It's an honor to sound like Ray Romano, he's a comedic genius. Thanks for watching, picante!
Turn it inside out before putting in the washer.
I'll try that next time. Thanks for the advice, Dave!
That is an ooooooold Dryer!!!!!!
Thanks so much for watching, Robyn! You're right, it's really old, but still works great! Hoping I won't have to replace it for a while.
So can you unshrink them because it made mine smaller 🤬🤬
I don't think there's any way to unshrink clothes that have shrunk.....thanks for watching, Faze!
I used to work at a Dry Cleaners going through college. That's called blocking. Yes, it can be done.
Anyone use steam?
Fold it n dump it in the washing bag at least to maintain shape
Hey Kik, that's a great suggestion. The jacket needs some serious time on the hanger to get its shape back, so the bag should really help. Thanks for watching!
I think is ok
Thanks for watching, Cindy. Glad you enjoyed the video!
FUNNY !
Thanks for watching, KissMe! Glad you enjoyed the video!
My mom wont pick up the phone, so i‘m here to learn how to clean this coat lol hope it comes out good 🥲
Hope so too, best of luck! Let me know how you make out.
