@@hkk3554 it was originally supposed to be a shiva temple... But instead the shaivite king ( suryavarma ) built a vishnu temple... He died before the temple was completed, the next king was a vaishnavite ( visnu ), jayavarman,.. who later accepted budhhism and consequently visnuloka was changed into angkor wat ... And no... khmer was not attacked by budhist monks. The royalty instead donated all its property to the people of khmer after acceptance of budhism and such khmer became a budhist land.

Akbar's name has Muhammad in it but that doesn't mean king Akbar was an Arab, Many Indonesians and Malaysians still have names like Saraswati, wishnu, Devi etc but that doesn't mean they are Indians. Khmer kingdom was influenced by south Indian dynasties so they adopted similar names and titles. It's just a cultural influence nothing more than that. Suryavarman was believed to be the descendant of Cholas but that doesn't make him a Chola. he had his independent kingdom, spoke Khmer and practised his Khmer culture. Mughals were descendants of Mongols but that doesn't mean Mughals were Mongols. So Tamils having some cultural influence over Khmer is true but Tamils didn't build Angkor Wat it was built by the Khmer

What is the source of your claim? From which history book you are getting such info? There is no evidence of Cholas attacking the Khmer kingdom. Khmer and the Cholas were allies. Cholas attacked Sriwijaya, not the Khmer. Don't spread misinformation also southeast Asia did have some Dravidian influence but that doesn't mean everything in southeast Asia was built by Tamils. It's like saying Persians build the Tajmahal because it is based on Persian architecture. Southeast Asian history belongs to Southeast Asia, not Tamils or any Indian. They got Indian influence and embraced it but that doesn't mean you Tamils will claim their historical monuments.
As a Cambodian I feel grateful that foreigner love this temple and the king who built it but he's not Indian he's Khmer. The word Suryavarman came from Sanskrit because Khmer people heavily influenced from India and Sanskrit since the 1st century.

SuryaVarman who built it was from Khmer dynasty in Combodia.
Although there could be some connection with Tamizh kingdoms, neither was SuryaVarman a staunch Shaivaite (as per some comments) as the temple he built is a Vishnu temple and nor it is Tamizhan temple (as many claim), let's just say that it's a Hindu temple later converted into a Buddhist temple.
I'm not against any God or any language, just let's not spread false information.
Angkor Wat represents Mount Meru and such an architecture of this amazing temple is native to it's land and let's credit them their due.
Unfortunately many in the comments section are attributing SuryaVarman as a Chola king etc.
Cholas were indeed great and had their foothold across many South Asian countries but that's it.
In fact, Pallavas had more connection with the early Khmer rulers and the Khmer script has some mixed usage of Sanskrit-Prakrit-Tamizh.
So there's no Tamizh Prince building Angkor Wat etc.

I think you are confused. Hindu is not an ethnicity like Khmer. Hindu means a person who practices Hinduism. Hindu is a religious identity so, there are Indian Hindus, Hindus from bali, Srilankan hindus, and Nepali Hindus just like this ancient Khmer were Hindus as Khmers during the period of suryavarman II practised Hinduism so they can be called Hindus. The King who build the temple was a devotee of the Hindu God Vishnu so he was a Khmer Hindu king. That's why the temple is called a Hindu temple as it is dedicated to a Hindu god and was built By a Hindu king. Khmer were Hindu back then now they are Buddhist.
