E.L.O. is my favorite rock band of all time. (though I love the 70's line up more, because the way Melvin and Hugh threw around their cello's and Mick rocking his blue violin were so brilliant.) I still play their albums today even though I am really in to heavy metal.

The current version of ELO (Jeff Lynne's ELO) has a live version of this on youtube which actually shows a rather tight group of musicians performing at a superior level. Funny how in many respects Richard Tandy was to ELO as Rick Wright was to Pink Floyd.

Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra from The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame site: "Picking up where the Beatles left off, ELO expanded the concept of great melodies, epic song structures and grand orchestrations. ELO added an exciting mix of elements into rock and roll, including disco rhythms and electronic studio wizardry. Imagine a marriage of tuneful, rocking pop songs with instruments from the symphonic realm, and you’ve got the blueprint for what made ELO one of the most popular groups of the 1970s and beyond.
Jeff Lynne, ELO’s vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, co-founder, and frontman, conceived of a rarefied musical sphere in which cellos coexisted with guitars, and where classically tinged progressive rock intersected with hook-filled, radio-friendly pop.
The result: ELO’s boundary-breaking approach to rock that resonated with a global audience, both as a pop singles act and as album-oriented rockers with deep-track appeal".

My favorite ELO song, which is saying something. We put together a band to do this song in my high school talent show, and yes, I sang lead and played keyboards. Fun fact about this song I didn’t see in the comments (apologies if I missed it): The “aria” part isn’t in any real language. The original concept of the electric light orchestra died after ELO 1 when Roy Wood left and the dynamic changed completely. 10538 Overture is how ELO should sound to me and I think Kel as a classically trained musician would appreciate that ELO more than the 'poppier' incarnation. But what do I know? The became one of the most succesful bands ever.

Two others that come to my mind are Merry Clayton's voice cracking while sing "Rape/Murder" in Gimme Me Shelter. If you listen carefully you can hear Mick Jagger's reaction--wooooh-- in the background. Second, if you listen carefully to the Beach Boys song "Wendy" you can hear Brian Wilson's cough after an extended falsetto run. Yes, I agree, The Moody Blues were certainly the first symphonic ROCK band ... but METAL? Not so much. They were a huge influence on me too, but "I'm Just A Singer In A Rock & Roll Band" was as close to metal as they got. This song is a LOT more metal.
I cannot think of any rock song that featured a female opera singer prior to this one. (Proto-Floor Jansen?)
ELO had their "orchestra" players actually as part of the band, on stage - not just studio musicians.
Jeff Lynne is a trailblazing genius and broke a lot of ground in rock with ELO. Think about how brave that was to decide to fuse rock and strings (and a rich chorus sound) when no one else was doing that.
I think of ELO as the grandfathers to Nightwish and that whole genre, and for that I thank them forever! I would like to know how much ELO influenced Tuomas Holpainen & the rest of the band.
You can also make an argument for Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" being the first true metal song to feature an orchestra (I think?) and with S&M they did a whole concert with an orchestra live. Did that twice, in fact.

As someone Lana who has been plugged in to Jeff Lynne and E.L.O. for the best part of 40 years... they have provided the soundtrack for my life pretty much, to only recently in the past couple of weeks discover Nightwish and like very much to the point of jumping down that particular rabbit hole, I agree that E.L.O. are their grandfathers. I didn't expect to like Nightwish before hearing them for the first time to see what all the fuss was all about but did in part due to my lifelong exposure to E.L.O. so the Nightwish Symphonic Metal sound was very pleasing and surprising to me, plus Floor Jansen helps 😊. @@PaulOutdoors Thanks for an excellent comment, Paul. You made my day! )
Now I hope I am going to make yours. Have you ever heard of Devin Townsend?
I feel like I have become a Devy Evangelist since I am going around telling everyone I know about him. At the time I discovered him a few months ago, I was deep into Nightwish, but since then, I have become absolutely obsessed over his vast catalog.
I never thought anyone could eclipse Pink Floyd (see what I did there?) as my all-time favorite, but I think he has.
i went to look him up due to a Nightwish reaction video comment. I watched "Kingdom (EMG version)" The stunning opening guitar riffs with all the layering blew my head off, but by the time he sang that first note, I knew it was all over for me.
Also look up his amazing Plovdiv concert.
"Truth". "Stormbending". "Om". "Higher". "A Simple Lullaby". "Deep Peace". "Seventh Wave". "Things Beyond Things".
As good as the "Funeral", "Bastard" and "Death of Music" trio are here, I would put the Royal Albert version among the greatest musical experiences ever.
His video for "Spirits Will Collide" is astonishing. Finally, his songs with Anneke "Grace", "Numbered" and "Awake" are also wonderful. There is so much more, but I have gone on too long already (sorry, I just get excited!). If you love all this, get back to me. You owe me a pizza. ))

ELO is on of my favorite bands, especially when they used real string instruments before switching to synths on the last couple of albums. So many great songs. 'Rockaria' is great, mentioning 4 classical composers in the lyrics. "And Verdi's always creeping from her room," is a funny line.

I just heard Kel mention the electric chello I'm very surprised she hasn't wanted to check out the two cellos, a couple guys from Europe that have played them all over the world doing rock like AC/DC and others, and really get the crowds gone crazy.🎻

Ok I’ve just found you both and I’m going to throw you a musical treat from a while ago they were called Sky, If you really like that classical rock crossover I highly recommend their treatment of Bach’s Toccata and fugue in D minor I think you’ll like it and rock out to it too, Right I’m off to like and subscribe.

Hi kel-n-rich I would love to see Kel react to status quo live at the proms. You will see a professional classical orchestra getting their grove on. Love your channel from across the pond in god's own county Yorkshire.

Very cool. I was down in Fort Lauderdale for show couple weeks ago, but was recovering from a little battle with Diverticulitis, so wasn't very social. I also was front row back here in Jersey and posted about 12 videos. You guys should review one! I couldn't find any other ELO songs you reacted too? While "Rockaria" is a great song, I believe a great song to react to would be either "Turn to Stone" or "Mr. Blue Sky" and then get deeper into the band with maybe "10538 Overture" or "Telephone Line", and then from there plenty more. Rock on!!

I listened to your description of you wanting to plug your cello into the electricity , but the question is , have you listened to 2 Cellos yet , with your background in cello it would be an amazing reaction to see what you think of their amazing renditions of rock anthems with just 2 cellos and a drummer

Great to see you guys enjoying ELO. Please listen to their album El Dorado (in full ). Even if you can't do a reaction you should listen to it together and maybe just comment on it. Any ELO fan will say that it's one of their best. Before they became 'commercial".
