The Rise and Fall of the Kingdom of Nabatea

  • The Nabatean Kingdom was a powerful political entity which flourished in the region of modern-day Jordan between the 4th century BCE and c. 106 CE and is best known today for the ruins of its capital city of Petra. Although it is clear that a wealthy community was thriving in the immediate vicinity of Petra by 312 BCE (attested to by the Greek expedition mounted against it), scholars usually date the Nabatean Kingdom from 168 BCE, the date of their first known king, to 106 CE when it was annexed by the Roman Empire under Trajan (98-117 CE).

It'd be better if the names of the kings are pronounced in [modern] Arabic (as it is related to language of the Nabataean) rather than in Greek.
For example, Aretas is the Greek pronunciation of the name that became Harthah or Harithah (حارثة‎) in modern Arabic. Obodas is 'Ubaydah (عبيدة). And, Malichus is Malik (مالك‎).

The Arab heritage of the Nabateans is important to acknowledge, especially given the widespread ignorance of pre-Islamic Arab civilization. However, to be fair to the scholars, little to no Nabatean literature has survived. Greek sources thus inevitably play a larger role than local ones.

We can both be proud of our islamic history and pre-islamic one. And this dispels the common self-imposed propaganda that Arabs had no history before islam.
Did you know there are pre-islamic writings that start with "bismillah"? that means even before islam, the arabs had a sense for allah or "god" and always exalted his name. I find that to be fascinating.

@@studyofantiquityandthemidd4449 , thanks. I'll look at them. It's always important to keep abreast of new information of course. Part of the reason why archaeologists assumed Petra was "abandoned" by the 7th century is that the later Muslim conquest records don't mention it at all (but there's likely to be a quite unique explanation for that). Here is Micaela Sinibaldi of the Islamic Bayda Project:
"The big misunderstanding, which traditionally saw Petra as a completely abandoned city after the Byzantine period, derived from several elements: the traditional focus of archaeologists on the exceptional remains in the Petra valley and less attention to its hinterland and its relationship with the valley itself; the great importance of the Nabataean period in the area, as opposed to the ones which followed; the difficulty of the interpretation of the archaeological documents involved, especially ceramics; and last but not the least, a certain fascination of seeing Petra in the dramatic, black-and-white tones of a complete abandonment and sudden rediscovery, cultivated by a somewhat Orientalist taste."

THe hinterlands of Petra in particular were heavily populated, and agriculture was thriving. There's no evidence that either the Persian invasion of Palestine, or the Arab conquests, had any material effect upon the city of Petra.

Their history and story is in the Quran. They were powerful strong people that had the lifespan of hundreds of years. Their strength allowed them to build great architecture on the rocks. Prophet Saleh was sent to them by god as a messenger to guide them and warn them that they must stop their wrongdoings and follow god. They told him they would follow god on one condition that he has to tell god to create a living breathing camel out of a rock they had in their village. Prophet Saleh asked god, and god delivered. The rock broke open, and a pregnant camel walked out of the rock after it broke open. Prophet Saleh told them that god has a condition that they let the camel be, not hurting the camel in any way, and that they should let the camel roam freely and drink and eat freely from their village with no harm. The next day they conspired to kill the camel in order to prove that god doesn’t exist when they prove that no punishment will happen. Then they conspired to kill Prophet Saleh and his followers; but god has protected the prophet and his followers from them. After this incident prophet Saleh and his followers moved to a different land with a heavy heart. The prophet warned them that he has spent all his life trying to warn and guide them, and god gave them so many chances and showed them more mercy than they deserved but they never listened now they have angered god he warned them that in 3 days god will send his punishment on them and he hoped they would seek gods forgiveness during this time so god would show them mercy but they didn’t. They spent their 3 days in worry and arrogance by exactly the 3rd day’s morning the sky was filled with lightning and thunder, the earth shook very violently. God has destroyed the city of Thamud and it’s people died in a torment of fear and disbelief. They all fell down dead one and all at the same time. God has kept the city border still intact till this day in Alula Saudi Arabia as a warning to people not to do what the people of Thamud have done. Prophet Muhammad has encouraged Muslims to avoid that place at all costs and if they have to pass by it, they should pass hastily, and not stop because that place is not a peaceful place to see they have been punished violently and are still punished in the afterlife till this day under that ground. That’s why Europeans think it’s forgotten. It’s not forgotten it’s just a story too sad and scary to talk about we just use their story as a reminder. May god protect us all. God is the most merciful but he does punish severely too.

@@user-xu9ji4dd4e LOL no there not go do some reading, the Romans rule over them. Herold was Esau and he didn't come from Rome Italy he worked for them he was not an Italian and was under Thier Authority something like the U.N. I should say Esau lands are Petra and that area... Rome came in and took over.... And made alliance with them... Rome is one of Japheth's dependents.. and who freaking cares any who for All who believe in Yahweh and follow our savior Yashuah will be saved... You should take a listen to our native American pow wows you can clearly hear us singing to Yahweh.... The coat of many colors and don't for get about those milk white Nazarines I gave you that scripture already. Blows my mind how racist unloving people actually think that they are gods people.... Remember to love thy neighbours all of them!!!!!! And if you actually read the bible you know it's not gonna end well for the Jews like I said they are only one tribe the tribe of Judah. The rest it says are scattered living free thinking they are the people's they blended in with... Please go educate yourself first before you talk about things you have no idea about. Lamentations chapter 4 verse 7 now take a good look at he words THIER SKIN IS WHITER than milk. Notice it says skin is whiter than milk? That's white people Buddy!!!!!! And one more thing not all white people are Romans. Nor Esau. you can't be that ignorant. Rome = Japheth and Esau = Shem..... WOW. Three completely different blood lines.....

Also, fun fact: History is literally taking someone else’s work and readapting it into your own work. In case you didn’t know how writing history actually works.
      You must hate the subject.

I saw an archeological doc that focused on the flood problem through these passes.
Petra built a series of dams ... earthquakes and failed infrastructure ... allowed the floods common to this area nature given its course. After all, that's how these clefts through massive rock were created, water wearing it all away through the eons. 👵🥱🕯️😏🌜😴😴😴
