      what year engine are you talking about?

  • @adzythepwcblokeinaustralia5467

    The camshaft drive chain tensioner is a failure point on Yamaha engines , the coil spring has been known to break and release tension on the cam chain. This results in a catastrophic engine failure as valves hit the piston. The cure is quite simple , a longer 6 mm bolt that pushes on the end of the cam chain adjustment screw to stop it backing off in the event of a spring breaking. A lock nut on the longer bolt holds it in the desired tension. Yamaha YZ250F & YZ450F and WR models all use the same design cam chain tensioner , my personal WR250F had the same failure but fortunately I noticed it before it caused major damage. King regards Adam Troy

      It's an issue with single cylinder engines but not 4 cylinder. 4 cylinder engines have smoother cam operation. A single cylinder you have fluctuation in the stress on the cam chain and tensioner.

    " ... headache for 3 years ... " All of a sudden I feel incredibly fortunate. My dad and uncles used to throw us around like acrobatic toys while we were still in diapers. When my uncle bought a PA-18-125 back in 1951, aunt Gracie was the first passenger, I was the second. Over 70 years of zipping, spinning and flying around, don't recall ever not enjoying a single minute of it!

    If I ever get or build one of these aircraft, I'm sold on the Yamaha. I've worked on that style engine for 20 years now. The fuel injection is new to me, but it can't be any worse than modern automobiles.

    Suggestion: look at cams to change the valve duration opening. These engines are designed to rev out to pull up hills. Short stroke, high rev. They can be calmed down by changing the lobes so they make more torque, less vibration. I would suggest Crower Cams as a start.

      Good questions. Good Questions. I don't think they have actually set a TBO yet. What do you do to the fuselage frame to make able to handle so much more thrust?

    • @ExperimentalAircraftChannel
      @ExperimentalAircraftChannel  Před 4 lety +1

      I have asked this over "other" aircraft manufacturers recently myself. Being the load is so spread out across the airframe into the longerons most say it isn't an issue. The issue is the aircraft now being VERY capable of going well beyond the VNE in straight and level flight etc etc. Thank you for watching and engaging here. I appreciate you!

    • @sblack48
      @sblack48 Před 4 lety

      Experimental Aircraft Channel most say it isn’t an issue but do they really know? Has a competent person done analysis? If it isn’t an issue then the stock airframes might be way over built. Or maximum engine mount and the longeron loads are driven by something other than thrust forces and moments. But to determine that takes some detailed work by a qualified engineer, not some guy looking at it and pronouncing “ah, it’s fine, hasn’t fallen off yet”! One always wonders how much real knowledge is behind these mods.

    I love your content so far but have a constructive comment: there's kind of a "standard" in audio volume (for broadcast TV at least) and it's -7 VU. Nothing should go over that level, not the swooshes not the crazy knocks or the incidental muzak. Your videos are way too high overall, and it's a big PITA to have to rush and hit the down volume every time you want to watch one. On the other hand, man, please, don't use the obnoxious sound FX noises anymore! Super loud Swooshes and knocks. They're REALLY annoying. Thanks for your work. In all other aspects, it's really good.
