How often do you stop yourself from saying what you really think for fear of being rejected, punished, or not fitting in? Whether it's sharing our true thoughts at work, online, or with loved ones, self-censorship can prevent us from fully expressing ourselves and living authentically. It can also have profoundly negative consequences for our health and happiness.
This week’s guest is Africa Brooke, an internationally recognised consultant, accredited coach, public speaker and podcaster. She’s also the author of the wonderful new book, ‘The Third Perspective: Brave Expression in the Age of Intolerance’.
In our conversation, Africa explains the different ways in which we silence ourselves and the severe consequences, over time, when we don’t change course. She also explains the importance of creating a culture where everyone has room to mess up, stumble, learn and grow - privately and publicly - without the overwhelming pressure to be perfect.
Africa shares her journey with addiction and reveals how it taught her valuable lessons about the importance of self-honesty and authentic expression for personal wellbeing and growth. She emphasises that the path to overcoming self-censorship starts with self-awareness, taking responsibility for our values, and practising honest expression, even if it feels uncomfortable.
We also explore how we can better approach disagreements with others, the importance of avoiding absolutist thinking and how we can model healthy expression for our children, by showing up as our imperfect selves - by living and speaking our truth, we build trust and give them permission to do the same.
I think Africa is someone who is talking about a crucially important topic in the most beautiful, profound and compassionate way. My hope is that this conversation serves as a powerful reminder of the freedom and wholeness that comes with authentic self-expression and how embracing our true voice is a courageous and transformative act.

It’s a family ministry (well my mom, aunt, grandma, cousins…attend there as well) So now I’m at place where I’m listening and feeling The need to get away from my familiarity. I wanna keep the peace because I know they’re gonna try to say some things to keep me there, but I can’t keep being concerned about what they will say I have to do it FOR ME.

Hello Rangan, hello Africa, still not through the talk and you are voicing so much of my thought already. I felt deeply hurt when a relative of mine who lives in a country where manners and etiquette seems to be still very important, at one time just stopped greeting and going right into the message in our WhatsApp exchange. That would be okay in an ongoing daily conversation, however it was hurtful when these greeting were just cut out in an occasional exchange, while at the same time, the greeting was still used with other people. When you brought up this matter it was a release and I can see it more as a potential general behavior rather than just another attempt of belittling. There are many other valuable nuggets and o definitely will listen to this conversation more than once. Thank you

I think the example Rangan gave of his mum making a comment about his weight is something that has been normal or common in many families and sometimes it might be meant as Rangan said his mum meant is as an expression of concern that he is looking after himself and sometimes in a way that is critical or demeaning or just some kind of judgement on a person "gaining weight".
I think we have all become alot more conscious about making comments about a person's body or weight but it was very common a few decades ago but I think intent is everything and Rangan knew his mother meant well.
I think it is a cultural shift though where we are more aware of eating disorders and senstivities around body image which 20 years ago or so we weren't.Cultures change and do not stay the same and what is and isn't acceptable change.

    • @upendasana7857
      @upendasana7857 Před 25 dny

"social filtering"is about thinking whether you might cause unncessary offense, harm or upset and self censoring"is more when you are scared or fearful you may find rejection or social exclusion due to expressing your true thoughts or feelings.

Some really interesting opinions voiced here, thank you as always.
I would be totally remiss if I did not point out to you that you can turn the comments section off if it bothers you seeing negative things said, because it will just continue to happen. The internet provides anonymity & a chance to get an often contradictory opinion across. More often than not as well if i have replied "rudely" it would be because you have said something that directly contradicts with something I have said & also given said ideas a chance to reach thousands if not hundreds of thousands via osmosis. Per example you love your Johnny Wilkinson story however the guy didn't suffer (in my opinion) & when I hear you tell his story as an individual who has had to deal with real trauma I get offended & should be given the chance to get that across to you.

I don't say them, you do this or that, I presum they don't, guessing they do it.
When I have enough materiel , I use it to show they lie 😅
And I show my anger, for example : if it wasn't for the respect of the CZcamsr I would talk to you with as much respect as you give.
Often after the last one they attac me 😅😅 and they'r done, because I send laughing 🤣🤣 and say how much I love to see my impact " with the case I had, he stoped Sending 🙏💕😅

I should start by saying I enjoy a lot of your stuff but I think this is a pretty confused piece of work. Clearly there's a book to sell but despite starting the conversation with the importance of clarity of definition, much of the conversation (in my view) is tied up with rhetoric and platitudes. Cultures differ between those that are more individualistic and those that are more focused on the collective and social cohesion is vital to both - externalising your inner thoughts and being your 'authentic self' is not always socially appropriate, call it self censorship or judgement, whatever...
