You usually don't refer to anyone in a nonprofessional manner that you've become aquainted with, such as being a student of someone for a few years and then seeing them at the grocery store. Also if you're addressed to someone by the last name, and that person prefers to go by it or doesn't tell you to use their first name, you usually continue that practice. This is common in pretty much every culture as far as I know. If I ran into any one of my teachers, regardless of whether I cooked meth with them for years or just saw them again after 2 decades out of high school, would refer to them by their last name. It wouldn't cross my mind to use their first name, if I could even remember it.

I love how Jesse is the probably one of the smartest characters in the show. Not in book knowledge as Walk out classes him there, but he’s adaptable, good at reading people, and can pick up that book knowledge really quickly and effectively.
