Hey Zach. You really hit the nail on the head with your kit. The only addition I have different is RF 70-200 F/2.8. Every one of those 4 lenses are spectacular. I use all of them for the various types of work that I do. I also scooped up an R5 recently and wow. I finally get it. Not that the R6 ain't great, but I finally get it with the higher resolution. Hope to finally take the plunge into the R3...soon.....hopefully...For the 2023 year I also made some investments into to my studio flash kit for the on location volume work I do. I'm on the Godox/FlashPoint system; added 2 more AD400's and another V1; the ProFoto stuff is super duper nice too, props. Any who, enough of my ramblings. Thanks for the great video, very informative and I love to hear the thinking behind lens choices. I currently have the 24-70 2.8 on my R5 almost all the time. On my second camera I throw the 85 1.2 on it most of the time. After reviewing my photos I realized I don’t shoot lower than 2.8 on the prime very often. A super shallow depth of field isn’t required most of the time since, like you, I obsess over having my subject very sharp. I’m seriously considering putting a 70-200 2.8 on my second camera now and using it as my 85mm portrait lens.

Thank you for the video and the tips! Do you use any battery saving mode or eco mode on the R5 for weddings?
My kit - 2xR3's, (and also R5 and R6 for backup bodies, but I highly prefer the R3's over the R5/R6 for weddings for many reasons, so, R5 and R6 basically collect dust as backups...). Lenses - RF 28-70 f2.0, RF 85mm f1.2, RF 70-200 f2.8, RF 16mm f2.8 and basically all the older EF prime/zoom lenses whenever needed.

Nice setup! Probably would be my choices too if I had $15k to blow on camera gear! I should start shooting more weddings now that Ive moved to Vegas ha. Consider adding a good instant camera as well as an Instax printer, either square or wide. You'd be surprised what a hit they are when you give a few to the guests or the wedding party to capture moments and they get a kick out of getting prints in their hands right there.
Used to do extra work years back with my 5d mk2 now im getting back to shooting and buying a new camera, I'm looking at the R6mk2 with the 24-70 2.8f L IS Usm, what you think? Or should i go R5?

1. At this point in 2023, R3 or R6 with a grip?
2. Why not the 28-70mm f2.0 instead of using the f2.8 variant?

That lens is amazing, just too big for me. The look from the other RF lenses in terms of sharpness/color is the same in my opinion. 24-70 is preferred, for me. Thanks so much for watching!
mate your photos are incredible, 24-70 is a goat at weddings. The canon r5 with the rf 24-70 is probably the best set up, autofocus blows away the sony for photos. What's the autofocus on the 1v like? I'm rocking the EOS 50E film camera same lens, ef 50 1.8, but the 50e only has 3 points ahahahaha, a 5d like autofocus on a film camera sound awesome.
Honestly I have no complaints - it's pretty great! Definitely the most pro 35mm I have ever used. Thank you for watching
I thought the EF 50mm 1.2 was your all-time favorite? I'm guessing my EF 50 adapter issue is a moot point now?
hi zach ... so how many rolls of film do you shoot on a typical wedding day - and do you shoot the same image on film and digital? If you have the 2 digital on the hold fast strap how do you keep the other gear on your body - bag?
It depends on the wedding & the package, etc. Maybe 3-5 rolls? Holdfast also makes a triple camera harness. Thank you for watching!
Hi ! Thanks for the video ! Do you use filters on your lenses ? I used to have protect filters from Canon but now that I've RF 50mm 1.2 I don't want to loose quality or other but I should probably protect it, I don't know... And another question : do you take your two bags on weddings? How do you manage on the wedding day with your bags ? Thank you so much
I do have protect filters but I constantly debate over whether or not to use them. I did at first, then stopped for years, but a few months ago my 24-70 was cracked at a wedding!! I had to send it to Canon to be repaired and that freaked me out, so I bought protect filters from Canon for all of my lenses. I don't think it impacts the image quality too much, but I really don't like the reflections that can appear if there is light coming into the lens. So I think I might eventually stop using them. Its a tough call. Thanks for watching!

It's interested to hear that RF 50 1.2 & RF 85 1.2 are in your camera bag. I own R5 with RF 50 1.2 and likely will also get RF 135 1.8. I was always concerned spending the money on 85 while having 50, they are different lenses but both can achieve similar look with 50 being more versatile. With RF 24 & RF 35 coming up in the coming months I am thinking of 24 / 50 / 135 or 35 / 85. Any thoughts?
Man, I think it really depends on your style, etc! I am excited about that new 35. I think for stills, my kit will eventually be 35, 50, 85. 50 and 85 have their similarities, but they are also so different and I use them to capture different things. For me, that is all I need for wedding photography. I do love the zooms, especially for video. Thanks for watching!
Honestly, you shoot an 50 1.2 at f3.2 alsongside the 24-70 2.8, why Not relying on the 24-70 alone (capable of Shooting at 50 f 3.2) in Addition with the 85 1.2 which you use or alternatively an 135 or 70-200 or a 100 macro? Nice Photos though. What ever gets the Job done I guess.
How high of ISO do you use on the R3?
Results really depend on the quality of light, but you can get really clean results even up to 10000 and higher easy

I have the exact same kit but I'm planning on selling my R5 for another R3. Also curious why yoi don't have a 70-200, I find it crucial for the ceremony and reception.
I have also considered selling the R5 to get another R3, but I like having the resolution when I need it. Curious, what made you decide to go that route? I do have the 70-200 and will use it at larger weddings, but I mostly stick with the 85.
@@TheZachMendez I personally find the R3's files to have a lot more pop and be easier to work with than the R5. The dynamic range is also significantly better. I also don't really need the extra resolution and find 24 to be perfect because I rarely crop in post. If I do, I find that the R3's resolution is more than sufficient. Not only that but I love the ergonomics and battery life. Having that built in vertical grip is a blessing, and I truly despise the R5's battery grip. Having to go back and forth between the two gets a little annoying (first world problem).

first I need to rob a bank, body R3 6.5k, lens 24-70mm 2.3k, 50mm 1.8k, 85mm 3.2k --- around 14000 euro just for gear, crazy, not possible

I don't shoot Canon, do Sony FF , and just bought what is supposed to be their best 24-70 2.8 GM, II well, it is not even close to the IQ I can get with my prime lenses, the convenience is there for sure, but ...for me, I think I will stick to primes for events and just use th 24-70 for family gatherings ...or return it ... Canton may be different , Sony, not ......
Nah sony's colours are disgusting... i'll be so frustrated shooting with sony and colour correct every single of thousands of pics on a wedding events... even thinking about it gives me headache
@@mbismbismb looks like there are quite a bunch of wedding photographers that don't mind doing that , and many of those used to shoot Canon and Nikon before

I do still use my 70-200 all the time!! Mostly for stage events & video. I will also use it at weddings if I need more reach, but generally the 85 is my preferred long lens for capturing still photos. Thanks for watching! :)
