"$250 means a lot of different things to a lot of different people" ... Words of wisdom. Im a dad of 3 and couldn't possibly fathom spending $250 on this masterpiece. But know my friend i live vicariously through you. That was another great review. Your reviews got me and my kids into gunpla. Thank you for the hours of entertainment brotha please keep em coming.
Father of two here. What I do is what I call "chip save". After all the expenses for the month taken care of, I chip a little money in a jar. Away from our bank savings. That way I dont feel guilt when I buy an expensive kit from my "chip". But if you are the " I could have bought blah blah with that money" type of guy, this wont work.
Not a parent (do dogs count tho?), but I agree with you guys. There's just not enough behind this kit to justify it being $250, especially when you could spend around half the price (maybe a bit more/less) to get nearly all these parts (plus some) to do the same kind of setup.
FA Unicorn Ver Ka is about $80 (or less) now, a couple of Action Bases with adapters (price may vary) and boom; Poor Man's MGEX lol.
I would include the MS Cage, but good luck trying to get one currently after the Expo last month lol.
Buy it as a christmas project for christmas. That way you technically only spending $62.5 since 4 people are sharing it 😂
@@Heavy_Metal_Gunpla majority of the cost goes to the led, and the kit is a redesign that is a much better structure, and adding the cage in there its actually not that expensive
@@Heavy_Metal_Gunpla i could not care less about the lighty lighty gimmicks. Hated the pg exia, absolutely love the pg strike. This mgex kit opened my eyes to other possibilites. The metal composite unicorn is really looking good for me and I hope of owning one next month. But I understand and respect the market for this. This is the real Premium Bandai. The luxury kit.

Hey Mecha, you should try to shine a blacklight at the deactivated psycho frame. A Chinese review of the MGEX shows that the psycho frame glows blue when a blacklight is shined on it.
And shine blacklight when the red or the green light effect is on too, first time I try it I was blown away

I watched this video three times before I finally couldn't control my impulses anymore. So far, I've built the base and the torso and I have to say that I agree that this build is extremely refreshing. There's so much fantastic undergating to all of the external armor panels and I swear I've done virtually zero nub clean up on any of it. The worst I've had to deal with is that harder dark gray plastic in the MS cage base and shield stands. But for the Unicorn itself? The parts are coming out extremely clean and I feel like that alone helps justify the price of this kit. Also, I don't find the build to be very difficult. It's mainly getting the LED strip to line up exactly where it needs to be that I find a bit annoying. Needle nose tweezers help a lot. It's gotten easier as I go though. The worst was just getting the cockpit and lower torso situated around the strip at first.
Anyways, thanks for what you do. I thoroughly enjoy your videos.
Same here I just got mine as well and it has to be one of my favourite builds ever. I actually gave me a challenge since cause you have to build it along with the LED strip

I need a version without the led and pre-colored psycho frame though, seeing you carefully handled it to make sure the LED wouldn't snap made me feel stress already.

This review inspired me to buy the model so I'm currently building this MGEX and I can honestly say: it does feel more on par with building a PG. Building around the flexible LED strip adds is a whole 'nother level of difficulty, but I know all the effort will be well worth it once all is said and done.
I got my first kit a few weeks ago, it’s the HG 1/144 Barbatos lupus. I really like it, and it was super fun to build
There should've been an actual folding/unfolding V-fin for a kit that pricey.

BTW the forearm beam sabers are the only ones accessible during Unicorn mode. The backpack ones are only usable once it has entered destroy mode.

I just got into gunpla a couple of days ago. I went to a pretty well known hobby store in my area that has a huuuge selection of gunpla and this 10 year olds mom got him this off the shelf. I was like daaang this kid makes me look like trash probably 🤣 His mom said he was actually pretty good at it. Props to that kid.

I could not, for the life of me, convince myself to get this even if I can save up for it. My mind will always go, "you can buy more kits/tools for that price." And yes I can lol. So, I'll just live vicariously through this review. Such an awesome kit, I love love love this Unicorn.
Also I second that idea of releasing barebones version of MGEX Unicorn. Maybe more people will be able to afford it, bc honestly a lot of MG kits need a 2.0 or 3.0.

Gundam Unicorn: Glowstick Edition EXTREME
Definitely going to save up for this one. I hope they continue this new line, as I do like seeing just how much innovation they can pack into these kits. Also, had a thought for a video you could do from time to time. We all know that some kits eventually fall apart, or otherwise fail to maintain their original level of quality. A prime example of course is most early real grades. Because of this, I was thinking you could go back to a couple of older kits every few months or so just to update people on how they're holding up. Tell us how long you've had the model in question and how much posing and such you've done with it so we have a clue to how long a given kit might last and how much abuse it can take before it's initial level of quality begins to fail. Call it "Throwback Updates" or something.
I've got mine 3 weeks agon and I've already finished building the base, stands for the shields, chest, arms, legs, and head in just 2.5 days. All that I have left to build is the backpack, weapons, and cage. Not to mention doing some panel lining as well
I've only just started with the gunpla hobby and for a first model I thought I would jump straight in with a MG. It was the perfect choice for grade but the model I went for really wasn't the best pick. Little did I know how old of a kit Zephyranthes was. I didn't let it put me off and after finding your channel I now have RG Tallgeese and HG Beyond Global under my best and can't wait to get more. I think the Wing Zero EW Ver Ka released in Nov will be my next one.
High Grade: Getting better and better.
Real Grade: Lots packed in a small package.
Master Grade: The Best Grade (in my irrelevant opinion)
Perfect Grade: Centerpieces of any Gunpla collection.

dude i owe you so much. i watched Unicorn and never saw RE: 0096. if it weren't for this vid i would have missed out on RE: I AM which has very quickly become my 2nd fav Gundam opening. i think i've listened to it like 100 times over the past 4 days
I light up the megasize Unicorn using around 80 LEDs. I repainted it with the same color and deymm I can't get enough just by looking at it! Definitely a head turner!
You should get this if you're are planning to replace a old Unicorn like I did with my FA Unicorn.

True, most RG kits before the Unicorn were all about looking good than being good. They looked awesome, but were basically live hand grenades that could burst apart in your hands.
I bought the RG Zeta against better judgement, and boy was that a BIG mistake.
Nero Biblios I ALMOST bought one recently but got the freedom strike instead 😬 had to topcoat it just to get it to stand.

Fyi if you didn’t know what those gray fins which Katoki is known for coming out of the chest are, those are called Vortex generators and their purpose is to help keep a stable flight on an aircraft by pulling high energy air to the aircraft’s boundary layer and reducing / delaying stall

I was on the fence about this one in fear that it would just be a reissue with lights, but im relieved to see its a brand new mold and holds solid.

I'm completely blown away by the proportions of this new Unicorn. The old mg was always lacking something, this one has thicker legs which reminds me of Megas XLR.
Is this model itself considered Ver. Ka and does anyone think it'll be released without all of the expensive stuff?
If I'm not wrong there is a ver.ka without the leds it's just gundam unicorn ver.ka

12:12 I agree here as well. The fact that you're paying over $200 (US) for this kit yet they go with stickers on the v-fin? They should have at least included a non-transforming v-fin that is pre-painted in gold like the PG. You could always relatively easily paint it, but it's a bit of a shame that Bandai didn't go the extra mile.
15:47 I'm not surprised to see some parts being reused from older kits; albeit a little bit modified. You know, I wouldn't be surprised if Bandai releases a P-Bandai weapon add on set with 100% newly molded parts. Something like that would probably be for RX-0 Full Armor Unicorn Gundam 'Expansion Unit'.

I’m impulsively bought this the other day and spend about 30 hours building it. I could not stop building and building and building 😂 I am in love with this thing. I keep staring at it now that it’s built. I feel like it is worth the money if you can afford it.
@Mecha Gaikotsu So, where's the moment the cable snap off? I'm not quite so sure whether it's the moment you disconnect it from the base or not cause i can't really tell

Hopefully it was just gaikotsu's way of warning us on how to handle the kit and do not overartìculate the model
The connection is built into the base. When you attach the Unicorn to it the connection happens then, so no real risk of breaking.

Just died temporarily from overuse during the review. I think it might just be a built in protective thing to stop them getting damaged.
They were fine again the next morning, and have been fine since.
The dimmer light of the shields maybe can be overcome by dulling the clear backside of the psycho parts. This might cause a more even light distribution in the part
I always felt the chill when RE:I AM starts on the best cliffhanger I've ever seen
I'd love to see a release of this without the LED strips and a colored plastic psycho frame. It would blow the Unicorn Ver.Ka out of the water, and hopefully be a little more manageable in price.

P-Bandai Exclusive repaints, regular grunt suit releases, sticker heavy kits, very old gunpla with new parts but outdated detail and articulation. Sure fam
1. That's exactly why they're P-Bandai. Even then, the prices are always high because of the damn resellers.

Owh snap, what i meant was grunt suit relases that are P-bandai, my bad, i just dont get why we have to pay premium for just the regular grunt suits such as eldora daugthress, eldora windam, daughtress, i understand suits like the varguil and the advance of zeta kits, but regular grunts suits that many people would like to customize due to its cheap cost has a limited run and extra shipping cost which can cost up to twice the amount the model kit is supposed be depending where you live

In Australia, retailers are trying to sell this for $500 dollars. They said “import tax” is why the price is about 1.5x the conversion rate, I wanted it, but for that price I’m going to have to pass

Thats a ripoff and ill tell you why.
Its because until the new year there is going to be a shortage of production. I know in north america at least, or specifically Canada and I assume Australia and maybe the US too, Bandai asked retailers to stop taking preorders. But many kept doing it with no guarantee of product being available, and the MGEX was one of the big ones. So now retailers will get 20% of what they usually get while product is diverted to these dickhead dealers so they can fulfill promises they made basically on behalf of bandai even though they were told not to.
So now, since covid, bandai moving into a second factory, and the MGEX needing the LED sets from a third party which I think is in China which is having trouble producing the amount needed , the very few free MGEX sets (the kit and the LED) that are being produced and put on shelves, are going to be either overpriced or bought by scalpers

As someone who has built model cars for around 30 years, I can really appreciate these things. I'd love to build one.
I feel like the master grade unicorn gets too much hate. The one I built feels pretty solid and looks pretty good. The transformation is a bit eh but still kinda underrated.
I have the Full Armor version myself, and it's not that bad. My build is just poor since I was new when I built it, so most of the mistakes were my fault. Though, I do agree that it is very weak in terms of joints and poseability.
Same i had the original ova (wich is now kinda broken i used the shield for a sort of astray custom and weapons for my upcoming banshee)
