Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull & the Insane WHA Game Between the Winnipeg Jets and Houston Aeros (Hilites)

- The Houston Aeros - Winnipeg Jets rivalry was the most intense in league history. Featuring two of the game’s greatest legends in Gordie Howe and Bobby Hull, these two franchises combined for five of the rebel league’s seven Avco Cup championships.
The bad blood between these two legendary squads was on full display December 5, 1975, before 10, 700 fans in Houston’s Summit. The high-flying Jets and the hard-nosed Aeros squared off in a game that featured a season’s worth of excitement, plot twists and suspense. In all over 30 penalties for a total of 100 minutes were called. Moreover, two players were ejected for charging at referee Ron Asselstine, who then resigned immediately after the game (but would have a great NHL career as a linesman)..
Ultimately this spirited contest was decided by a miraculous comeback, capped by the winning goal scored by a player who had zero goals at that point of the season and would not score again for over two years.

Wow! The memories came flooding back on this one. How does a gangly Houston teenager become a lifelong, and irredeemable hockey fan...with Gordie, Mark, and Marty playing on the Aeros for those few years, and with Jerry Trupiano and Jack Stanfield providing this kind of frenetic play-by-play/color intensity night after night (it wasn't just this game, folks).
I was unfortunately NOT at this game, since my folks made me attend the Jr High Holiday band concert my younger brother was playing in that night, but I remember it very well. With an earpiece plugged firmly into my transistor radio, I was a slight embarrassment to my parents when groaning at the ejection of Mr. Howe, and obviously when celebrating the winning goal (my more muted reactions throughout the game drew several other scowls of disapproval from dad).
Additionally, mom was heading up a bank marketing campaign with the Aeros through the "Stick it to 'Em" years (buttons, bumperstickers, etc), and I was fortunate enough to meet some of the players; in fact, Mr. Hockey signed his autobiography and several pieces of memorabilia I still retain. Good times...
From the island where hockey was born & the city where the greatest coach in hockey was brought up in.....I hope Houston & Quebec City get N.H.L teams.
My god, the emotion in the announcers voice gave me goosebumps. Just beautiful!
authentic -- they loved working for the Aeros.

Attended this game with my father and at that time I was 16 years of age. Tremendous rally by Houston.
The WHA was so much fun! I was a teenager in the stands watching the Edmonton Oilers with my dad at this time! 👍🏻😀
How many people attended the game? The venue sounds empty.
@@daniel213141 approximately 11,000. Tremendous WHA crowd.
@@jeffclark7888 yup, for the WHA it was ! when Edmonton's new 15,000 Northlands Coliseum opened up in 1974, the Oilers led the league in attendance with 10,722 and was considered to be very good for the WHA !
@@jeffclark7888 That's great for WHA game. I guess it was the audio back then it sound like the place empty.
The broadcaster's reaction to the aero's taking the lead was absolutely priceless!
That was Jerry Trupiano on the PBP with Jack Stanfield doing the color. One of the great memories as a STH for the entire Aeros history.
From an old timer that lived and breathed hockey in the 70s, this video was wonderful bit of footage and the play by play guy was something else. Right on 👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it ... The enthusiasm of the players and the broadcasters was incredible.
A voice from my childhood, JERRY TRUPIANO..
Hockey is the only US/N.Amer. major sport that I have never done play-by play or analysis for, in broadcasting, and along with Football, the only ones I have never announced at the professional sports level.
But, if I ever had the chance, I would've approached the structure very similar to the way Jerry did it, with a lot of the same mechanics.
I loved the way he did it. He did both TV&RADIO the same way because it was all simulcasted in Houston.
It was the same way for the NBA Rockets until Gene Peterson retired. He had copied a lot from Art Eckman, the first HOU. ROCKETS simulcaster who later went to Atlanta.
Bill Worrell was the Rockets first strictly TV-only play-by- play guy, and he just recently retired.
Later, Jerry did AAA EDMONTON BASEBALL, BOSOX BASEBALL including 2004, Joining Joe Castellano on radio while Ken Coleman did TV.
I could be wrong but I think Jerry did the Bruins play-by-play for awhile, too, and maybe Edmonton''s radio after Rod Phillips retired.
I can still hear Jerry now:
NOW HEADMANNING THE PUCK TO PAUL POPIEL, POPIEL TO LARWAY(lair way) AT CENTER, DON LARWAY over to MARK HOWE IN ACROSS THE LINE, BACK OVER TO POUL POPIEL WHO PASSES IT ON THE LEFTWING TO JOHN TONELLI, HIS WRONG WING.. WHO SHOOTS AND ahhh FIRES IT WIDE, NOW BOBBY HULL FOR THE WINNIPEG CLUB(DAN KELLY INFLUENCED JERRY) AWW AND HE HAS IT UP TO CENTER ICE TO ANDERS HEDBERG, HEDBERG...."
And, so on..
POUL POPEEEEL AND JOHN SCHELLA..
I just loved it.
Hope "TROOP" is still with us and doing well.
I loved his sportstalk with ex NFL exec. JOHN BREEN ON KTRH.
JIM NANTZ was later there AT KTRH-AM RADIO.
Yep, that one.
Yessir, Mark. Makes two of us. In fact, Larry Lund and Larry 'Stoney' Hale were both co-directors/instructors at Okanogan Hockey School in Penticton, B.C. when I attended summer of 1972 with a buddy of mine. We drove up from Seattle. Both very cool and talented men who I'm fortunate to count as a couple of my mentors back then. Glen Irwin too...he was our coach for the 'Student-Instructor' game at the end of the 2 weeks. What a blast to watch this game.

You gotta love the late Gordie Howe. What an incredible Canadian player.
Really...he tried to take the guys head off before pushing the ref. Gordie wouldn't have lasted in today's game.
@@markwillianen6049 Gordie was one of the best players of all time and probably one of the toughest. The ref quit the WHA the following day and went on to be a linesman in the NHL.
@@markwillianen6049 Even watching 46 year old hockey, you have to be the jackass, that isn't aware of what he watched.
The player {you say} a 47 year old Howe tried to decapitate, was holding Gordie's stick, and he used his superior strength to twist the guys grip loose. His stick rotated because that what happens when you try to shake someone off.

@@justplainbrad7713 What you saw is what I saw. He definitely had a hold of his stick (which itself is often called for a penalty),

Outstanding. I grew up 90 miles from Houston and got to see the Aeros play a couple of times.
Thanks, Danny!
In the WHA, IHL, OR AHL?
Old time hockey, good stuff.
Thanks, Peter ... it was an interesting era for sure.
That was the most amazing 1970's game that I have seen on video. I grew up in the 70's and it is incredible how much the game has changed. What I saw in that game that was so funny was the player at the end taking his glove off, picking up the puck, and then " Spiking "it!
Glad you enjoyed it!
The way Hughes spikes the puck at the end! EPIC!
Frank was definitely amped up for that game ... looks like they were all having a lot of fun.
If an AHL or NHL player did that with the officials they have now, that player would probably be fined, suspended and ejected from the game... for unsportsmanlike conduct.
I remember this crazy game for so many reasons, especially because Larry Hale was one of my favorites on that star-studded team because of his shot-blocking ability. Never known for his scoring, he notched one of the biggest goals in Aeros history. Thanks for such a sweet memory!
That's great, Mark ... Larry was practically invisible on this team -- but highly effective and well respected.
@@ProHockeyAlumni Love all the Aeros footage. Where do you get it all? Looks like the vault of Houston Sports Entertainment, which broadcasted the games. HSE was started by Jack Stanfield, a former player and color analyst. He made some coin as an exec there, eventually broadcasting the Astros on cable.
Ron Asselstine did not resign per se after the game. He stepped down as a referee but continued on as a linesman for the remainder of the WHA's existence.
thx bro!
Then put in many years as an NHL linesman. In fact, he was involved in an incident, I think in Boston, where a fan jumped on the ice during a game and Asselstine just nailed him with a tackle and took him down.
@@jameshorton7496 yes, that incident is on YT
Good to know, thanks. But sadly, he was wrong on this one, as it can easily be seen that the Jets' player is holding Howe's stick in one hand and then flings it in an upward motion while Gordie still has hold of it. I suppose that if Howe had let go of it immediately, it would have been obvious that the Jet had hold of it, but no one can be expected to suddenly let go of their stick when in hot pursuit of getting control of the puck.
However, Howe was clearly wrong for pushing the ref and had to be ejected. And wow, I hadn't been aware before of his action here, so it really surprised me.
Love the Great Gazoo helmet on Larry Hale!
I had to look that one up. It's a Northland. I remember a few guys had that type one I can for sure remember is Robbie Ftorek. So gross haha.
Awesome. I’m a huge Jets and I loved that team. They got sweet revenge in the finals with the 4 game sweep
I met Gordie Howe at a Red Wings game about a year before he died. What a gracious gentleman!

@@haraldgriefbacon1373 they played for the game, not necessarily all just for the paycheck. There was such a thing as team loyalty. Now all i see is a bunch of rich kids trying to decide which place has the best climate to live in, vs being on a team and spending their whole career there, trying to bring victory to that one particular team. There was more finesse in the game. Lot more fights in the game too. (Not as many crybabies back then). Not only were there not as many crybabies, there werent as many teams either. I think we've gotten to a point where there are simply too many teams. Theres so many teams now that one year, your team might go really far, but then for the next decade you might never see them again. I mean. That kinda sucks.
Now i will agree that some things about the game today are a lot better. Having curved sticks. Everybody wearing a helmit. No more 2 line pass rule. But still. I think the old style game was better. Even just hearing the entusiasm from the commentary guys was great. Better than the biased ones we here now, who dont even necessarily understand the game they are commenting on. They tried to put football announcers on the hockey game and it just isnt the same. Nobody will ever call a game like Bob Cole. The commentary today is a joke. Rather than talking about the game, they go way out of touch talking about someones grandma.. all while the play is happening. And then BOOM, someone scores and they dont even know who, cause they were too busy talking about grandma
Mike this is a wonderfully constructed post ... very good points.
Awesome post...thanks!

Hockey was just so great to watch back in the day. WHA was sprinkled with cagey old vets and up n coming youngsters. And as much as u see the need for safety especially in today’s game. Who doesn’t love when you could actually see the players in those bygone long locked hairdo days. Awesome video 👍👍up
Some of these names bring me back to my early childhood late sixties.
Ron Asselstine (born 6 November 1946 in Toronto, Ontario) is a retired National Hockey League linesman.
Born in Toronto and raised in Guelph, Ontario, Asselstine's NHL officiating career started in 1979 after a long outstanding career with the WHA and ended in 1998.
Another great video!
Thanks, my friend.
I'm a new comer to this channel. These videos are absolutely necessary for a younger generation. the hockey had great flow back then. some really great skating.

Greater Hair Flow than now !
Lol
Did you miss the assaults with a deadly weapon and major interferences thruout ? 🤣
Original 6 HOCKEY had greater flow and those guys were all great with the puck, not leaving it on their stick for lengthy periods of time, and knowing what to do with it instantly when they got it. And, accurately shooting it on much better goalies.
Today, we are watching 1990's AHL hockey disguised with a few exceptions as NHL hockey.
They exited the ice together to the locker rooms - how dangerous was that. Hey thanks for sharing this was awesome, keep sharing!!
Thanks, BJM ... nuts how they leave ice simultaneously and side-by-side
@@ProHockeyAlumni 😂 🤣
That's the way certain arenas were back then. Maple Leaf Gardens at one time had where both teams entered and exited the ice in the same area. Their lockerrooms were right across from each other. But then, the visitors lockerroom was moved to an exit at the far end from the visitors bench.
@@jameshorton7496 Weird how that arrangement from that era was at the height of goonery, bench clearing brawls, into the stands etc lol
Heck, until 1963 the players used to share the same sin bin! Have a fight and then go sit together in the box. Crazy.
As a Crusaders fan from Cleveland, I saw C's beat Winnipeg 5-1 on a Sunday afternoon before about 17,000 at Richfield Coliseum. I saw Houston beat the C's on a Sunday night. A row of fans were kicked out behind Aeros bench. Gordie pointed at the fans as police came down the aisle to boot the fans.
Great memories - thanks for sharing!
@@ProHockeyAlumni there were about 7 to 8 fans ejected at Houston game. They were 5 rows or so behind Houston bench. They were mean, lol. Drunked up, threatening players to jump the glass. We snuck down to lower bowl and sat near top of it.
My focus in game was Howe. He turned around a couple times on bench to look at fans. At some point a couple non players were standing on bench pointing at fans. Maybe 5 officers came down and removed fans. They were giving it to Houston as they were escorted out. If anything would have happened between players and fans, I would have left my seat to stand in lower concourse above the lower bowl. Great viewing point. It was close to something happening.
I remember pre-game before a Kings game at the Capital Centre against the Capitals. It was maybe former Cap Bobby Carpenter's first game as a King in Washington. The arena was practically empty. Bobby and a couple Kings skated on the ice. A fan started yelling something at Carpenter. Tiger Williams was on the ice and said something to the fan. At one point, Tiger started climbing the glass. The fan scurried like a rat up the aisle, lol.

love these old clips- how awesome are those old Aeros jerseys!
you re right -- the Aeros sweaters were beauties.
One. Time I found a hockey card of Larry hales and it showed he hadnt scored any goals on the back of the cards stat sheet so I asked him why he didn't have any goals. He just came out and said "because I play defense...it's the offences job to score the goals and the defencemans job to keep the offence from scoring". He never once told me that he scored probably the biggest goals in frachise history though.
Easy to see why more goals were scored back then. Goalies didn’t look like the Michelin Man back then. Sensible pad size and blocker and glove size. There was net to actually shoot at.
Correct. Why can’t they get the damned goalie equipment seriously down in size. They can still protect the goalies. Vaswhatever looks soooo stupid with all that gear.
The goaltenders are also bigger now. You'd never see a relative shorty like Leafs great Mike Palmateer in the NHL these days. Plus nobody played that splay-legged butterfly style they play now. Which they can get away with cuz the goalies are taller.
Goalies stood up too.
@@brucemacmillan7128 agreed. Getting drafted below 6'2 now is a small miracle
and there were no 9 foot russians..................lol
they need to raise and widen the net if these pads are going to stay
Would love to see the full game!
Great game. Although my Jets lost, it was fun to hear the names Hull , Nilsson & Hedberg 👍
Too bad, Ulf Nilsson, and Anders Hedberg had injury problems in the more physical, tighter checking NHL..Offensively, they were great in the WHA, decent/so-so in the NHL.
BOBBY was done by 1979 in the NHL/WHA initial merger season.
Really, too bad, Lars-Erik Sjoberg could not have played with the guys he played with in the late 70's in the WHA. The NHL really destroyed WINNIPEG in that merger/expansion draft, claiming originally drafted NHL PLAYERS like Morris Lukowich, Rich Preston(an Aero originally), Terry Ruskowski(another Aero), Kent Nilsson, etc..
Although, many of those were gone by 1984..or sooner.. from the NHL.
PRESTON AND ROSKO played for CHICAGO, and then later ROSKO played for PITT before retiring.
SJOBERG died very young due to brain cancer, if I recall. He was a fine defenseman.
The Golden Jet & Mr. Hockey - Hockey doesn't get better than this ! I know I'd be asking for too much, but a nice Gordie Howe Hat Trick would have put the Icing On The Cake in this game. I'm a Ranger fan I had the great privilege to see Gordie play on the same line with his sons Mark & Marty when the Hartford Whalers came into NYC to play at MSG in 1980 when the WHA merged with the NHL. It was a treat to see footage of Anders Hedberg and Ulf Nilsson on the ice with the Jets - 1975 Wow, that's one Hell of a cool archive !
UNBELIEVEABLE!
That was definitely high-sticking by Howe, swinging his stick at head level. And pushing the ref gets you ejected even if you're Gordie Howe.
Great slapshot goal by Bobby Hull.
Frankly, the craziest WHA game was the Toronto Toros vs. the Cleveland Crusaders on November 30, 1975. The Toros boatraced the Crusaders to an 8-2 drubbing by the midpoint of the game, but someone forgot to tell the Toros the game wasn't quite over yet. The Crusaders pulled to within 8-5 by the end of the second period. Remarkably, the Crusaders scored the next four goals to take a 9-8 lead before Toronto tied the game. Russ Walker had the last say with a goal with 10 seconds left to earn the Crusaders a hard-fought 10-9 victory.
For the Crusaders, this game was the high point of the season, where they had a record of 9-9-2; that was as close as they got to a winning season. They went on to win only one out of their next 10 games and concluded with a 35-40-5 record, then being swept in a best 3-of-5 by the Whalers, and finally turning off their lights in Cleveland for good. While they made way as the NHL moved in the former California Golden Seals and rechristened them the Cleveland Barons, they ultimately wound up in Minnesota as the Fighting Saints 2.0 (with red instead of blue uniforms) and faded away a half-season later. However, the Barons didn't even last as long in Cleveland as the Crusaders had.
Gordie was about 50 yrs old at the time amazing
47 OR 48, I believe..but he did play until age 52..
AMAZING..
its to bad he retired in the early 70s and came back to the WHA, if he wouldve stayed in the nhl until 1980 he would still have the all time goals with about 950-1000.
All right let’s get Houston a franchise soon. Them and Quebec City.
Relocate the Flames to Houston. It's doubtful the condemned building (Saddledome since the 2013 flood) won't be replaced after all.
Move Arizona to Quebec.
Move Florida to Hartford.
@sploofmonkey they want to restart the USFL, which was very much like WHA talent wise. It would be rough getting large enough arenas for a possible WHA.
TheTruthIsSweet, as much as I dislike soccer maybe it’s time to have a second tier, the top 4 move up and the bottom 4 move down. Start with a 24/24 split. To me they would have to keep salary caps and all player movement the same. Or how about a Euro/KHL tie in.
Production truck didn't quite get the cameras matched, but otherwise, great material AND historic. Thanks for posting. The Aeros experience must've created some rich memories for the Howe family.

The Jets got ripped off by not being able to keep their team together going into the NHL like the other teams. They were a legit powerhouse.
All four got "ripped off" (other than the Oilers getting an exception for Gretzky) because the WHA had almost no leverage. That allowed the NHL to treat the absorption of WHA teams as an expansion instead of a merger.
@@sirbobloblaws well, it was more contractual rights stuff than ripped off I guess. Jets best two players had NHL rights owned by other teams and didn't have 99s personal contract loophole.
right ... The Oilers gift of Gretz far outweighed the losses of Gustafsson and Langevin
The reason the WHA teams that merged with the NHL even got to protect a couple players was a concession to the Gretzky personal services contract. It gave the NHL the appearance of throwing the WHA teams a bone while avoiding a legal hassle their lawyers knew they couldn't win (i.e., forcing Gretzky into the NHL draft).
Andres Hedberg & Ulf Nilsson two who were best Jets & played on line with bobby Hull left the Jets two years before the WHA merged with the NHL. They signed huge contracts with the NYR & they didn't really do all that well. Then when Jets hired John Ferguson as GM he traded Kent Nilsson who was a star player & ended up with nothing much in return. He was making terrible trades for the Jets as they only got worse under his reign.
Wow. The Aeros were an amazing team back in my high school days and I was fortunate enough to meet the Howes once. They all had the same nose. You could tell they were related. Gordie was known for roughing it up even in his late 40s. He was a gentleman off the ice but a real scrapper on it which is why Detroit and Houston fans loved him so. Jerry Trupiano was the play-by-play man who also did Houston Astros, Houston Oilers and Boston Red Sox among others. Don't recall who the color man was. I nicknamed Paul Popiel the "Pocket Fisherman". Hey, NHL, WHY have you not awarded a franchise to Houston lo these many years??
The Howes -- including Colleen -- were some of my favorite people in hockey ... BTW color provided by Jack Stanfield
In the early days of the Aeros, PR man Sonny Tate handled color before Stanfield retired from playing to take over. Ironically, he parlayed that into a successful video business and ultimately played a role in forming the Home Sports Entertainment cable channel in Houston that ultimately became Fox Sports Southwest. See www.chron.com/sports/article/Regional-TV-venture-grew-into-Fox-Sports-Southwest-2094404.php
Jack Stanfield did Aeros color analysis..he was a one game NHL guy with the CHI BLACKHAWKS/BLACK HAWKS, and played two seasons with the WHA AEROS before working in their front office in PR/MEDIA RELATIONS.
Fred Stanfield a very good NHL defenseman was his brother. He had another, Jim, that played very briefly for the LA KINGS when they were a brand new expansion club..

Amazing how they so quickly whistled plays dead along the boards in those days. 5 Seconds left and they don't even try to move the puck along the boards and the ref blew the play dead to create the winning faceoff. That's something that NEVER happens today.
good observation. THX
They used to whistle plays dead real fast but eventually players started just freezing the puck along the boards as a way to get a whistle/face-off. It was around the early 90's when they started to discourage this by not blowing the play dead.
It was a big change for the better when dump and grind and hope to win a face off was the only way some teams could score. It was a bore.
MR HOCKEY!!!! Do I have to say any more !!
nope. says it all.
The Jets player was holding Howe's stick, but Howe gets the penalty! But in those days it wasn't overcommercialized beyond overcommercialized. It's such a relief to see the boards and ice free of ads.
There are many WHA games that were insame. My dad and I had second row behind the net Nordiques vs Peadrunners. It eneded 7-6 Nordiues. The winning goal slowly hit the post and the red light went on. The puck had never gone in. Frame by frame in the next days newspapers confirmed this. There was also the game where 2 players were sent to the penalty boxes for fighting, the penalty boxes were next to each other seperated by a low barrier and the players stood toe to tow and hit each other for at least a minute till off ice officals seperated them.
Seen some great battles featuring laraque, brashear and peter worrell
Announcers are great!!!
a agree -- they were authentically enthused for their team.
The great Jerry Trupiano on play by play and Jack Stanfield on color.
i'd love to know where you got footage of this game
Larry Hale was friends with my dad, and came over to ask me how much his rookie card was worth in Penticton.
Is it More valuable in P-ton?
I remember Larry had a smoking hot daughter that went to my high school back in the day.
Hahaha I love the Aeroes player spiking the puck at the end of the game.
Frank Hughes with the spike
This is the first time I have watched a game of this age, and the amazing part to me is the technical aspects of there skating and puck control that is still used today. They did it all without all the expert coaches and power skating coaches like a Robby Glantz. Yeah it's a bit rough compared to today's standards, and looks like a U13 to the untrained eye, but once you account for the gear and the off ice training that a player goes through before the puck is dropped on opening game, there is alot to appreciate from the skill these players had, and that is still coached into the current generation of players.
Actually this would make a great training video because of the speed of the game is so much slower
tremendous, thoughtful post. great insights
They keep saying the game is a lot faster now but those Montreal teams of the 60’s were faster than today’s teams
I wish we had film of the Brawl At The Mall game to compare.
I’ve never seen a player pick up a puck and then spike it like like football players do after a TD
Lol

Ha ha ha! Some early inspiration for Ron Hextall here with the Aeros goalie! Damn...back when hockey had character. I think between the Flyers, Bruins and Canadians, the 1970s was a decade of decadence in hockey. Bruisers, tempers, goons, flashy players, speed, grit...can't beat it.

Jan is one of the few guys still alive who was drafted in the old, original style NHL selection process. Since he was not on a Junior team sponsored by the NHL's "original" 6, nor signed/sponsored in JUNIOR by an NHL TEAM, he could be drafted back then(TENTH OVERALL BY CHICAGO IN 1964).
The modern draft did not begin until 1969 when the practice of only grandfathered-in sponsored players were exempt from the draft and sponsored Junior teams were ended. By 1976, there were no more players like that, as the NHL had made the post 1968-69 season's sponsored Junior teams, and players, a thing of the past from 1969-onward, except for grandfathered sponsored players.
The original draft which began in 1963, was why the weakest CALDER TROPHY(NHL ROOKIES OF THE YEAR OF ALL AGES BACK THEN)WINNERS PLAYED DURING THAT ERA..
Real men. Real hockey. xoxo The Clarences
Wow whatta game. Larry Hale! Larry Hale!
The game was good... but it’s the play-by-play guy that’s the real story here. The level of excitement he brought was phenomenal!
I agree they made it a classic!
I thought it must have been a playoff game. Nope. Had it been, the guy would have had a coronary.
The penalty called on Gordie Howe was a bad call. The Jet was holding his stick and he was trying to get it free - The Jet player's actions resulted in the stick going above the shoulder but it never was close to making contact with the Jet player. In today's game, the Jet would have received the penalty.
good points thx!
lol at how shocked the announcers were when Gordie was kicked out for assaulting the ref.
Different times for sure!
Man - the names! What a time for pro hockey…
very unique tie in hockey history -- it can never be duplicated!
Why was there a face off after the winning goal being scored in OT? Or did the WHA have different rules from the NHL for OT?
game winner was scored in regulation
Grahame does his best Hanrahan impression
If only the Hanson Brothers where in the game.
Old School Hockey!
9:29 would be an instructional video on holding by Jets D today
Thanks for the Danish hockey player Pail Popiel knod. Today I learned this. I'm Danish and dreamed of being a Danish born NHL'er.
Reminds me of an Old Timers game. I guess it sort of was
They put "GORDIE" on his sweater so we don't get confused. 😂😂😂
As much as this one is a great video, I wish Houston could have an NHL team.
timing is everything ... they came close in 1977.
I like the play by play guy
Cool.
Houston should’ve been included in the 79’ merger
Nice to see that Hull's toupee did not fall off.
toupee performed well through his WHA career.
thats hockey......other then the clutching and grabbing, great game
The highlights don't show everything. Was Grahame really arguing that there was a Winnipeg player in the crease? I know who wasn't in the crease. Him.
I bought a Popeil Pocket Fisherman in 1983.
I know someone who had it it was so 1970s ....sold at fine stores everywhere
What? Did he have a line of fishing gear?
The family, had zero to do with the pocket fisherman. There is Four (4) males, Pol, Jan, Dick and Dean...all were decent hockey players, Jan played for the Toronto Toro's Dick and Dean, earned a living from hockey for a short period of time. I was blessed to have had several long days and nights on their backyard rink...Mike Forbes of the Boston Bruins, hit me just above my goal pads with a slap shop...I thought he broke my leg, Ten below zero (-10) to have that isolated pain I still remember Fifty (50) years post the incident...
@@rodgerarmstrong2464 Thanks for the info! Dang, that must have hurt. Love hearing people's personal stories of hockey memories.
@@whatever3749 hurt at that time Mike was just drafted via the Kingston Canadians an O.H.L., team...was a fine mature polished person. He got hurt Boston traded him to Edmonton, where they had so much talent Mike could not make the team. Jan was a great Lacrosse player, I never saw Pol very often but he was very well respected. Their dad worked for Union Gas, and looked after the out door rink. The rink was small no boards even had Three (3) sets of stringer lites, I can remember being hit like yesterday..Mike was devastated I honestly thought he broke the leg bone
This was the era taht I started to pay attention to hockey, but not the WHA. By this time I was I diehard Buffalo Sabres fan, still am. I know very little about the dynamics of the league and it's battle with the NHL. About all I know is that the WHA teams entering the NHL were treated the worst of any other league-joining deals. The teams from the AAFC, AFL and ABA got better deals from the NFL and NBA.
At least 3 Hall of Famers in this game. Bobby Hull , Gordie Howe and left winger Mark Howe who was the greatest defensemen in the Philadelphia Flyers history.
What was the referee's name?
Ron Assholetine?
