The Most Unbelievable Story in Hockey
Will Theo Fleury's insane life keep him out of the Hockey Hall of Fame?
At 5-5 and 150 pounds, Theo Fleury was hockey’s little giant, a high-octane whirling dervish who thrilled fans and antagonized opponents. The smallest player in hockey, Fleury succeeded by playing the game on the edge - and he lived his life that way, too.
Fleury was ignored by NHL scouts, but against all odds he built a hall of fame worthy career highlighted by over 1000 points, a Stanley Cup championship, An Olympic Gold Medal and 7 NHL all star games appearances.
But while he was dazzling fans on the ice - away from the rink, Fleury’s life was spinning out of control.
Why was this pint-sized superstar so self destructive … and so full of rage?
In later years he’d come to understand that the source of his anger, guilt and shame was a painful secret he held inside. This was a secret so dark that hiding it ultimately cost Fleury his career, his family and almost his life.
This is the remarkable story of Theo Fleury - his unlikely rise to stardom, his descent into a personal hell and his search for freedom from the ghosts of the past.

lmfao Roenick is a Top 10 player of all time
The "Guffaw"... after every goal.
It always breaks my heart that Joe was so upset to be traded to the Capitals. I was a kid, and a huge Caps fan, and we were so excited to be getting him. We thought that Bondra and Juneau would be such a great combo. There are a lot of Caps fans that love you Joe.
Gary Doak... one of the "lunchpail" guys from those great 70s Bruins teams.
The year of the "Streak"... Philadelphia's 35 game unbeaten streak was an incredible run and was followed by all in the hockey world that year. The Islanders had a great feam but i would love to have Game 6 back with those high stick and offside goals... so would Leon Stickle i guess.
Joe Watson... the first half of "Thundermouth and Chan." Jimmy of course being the other half. Great Flyers... loved those guys!
Brett Hull got me through a shitty childhood
Legal
I loved watching Tommy when I was growing up in Atlanta in the ‘70’s. Those were exciting times…an NHL team in a Southern city back then was a first. The Flames, at the time, were the only consistent winners in ATL. So much fun to see TL and the Flames, particularly when the Broad Street Bullies came to town…a guaranteed Donnybrook!
Truly was a Horse 👍, your channel was just recently discovered by me. It’s given me many hours of pleasure looking back at what I think were hickeys glory days. Awesome research and the news clippings that coincide with the stories being told. Just love it
I have often wondered why Big Frank didn’t grab Imlach around the throat. What’s the worst that could have happened .In the end Punch was not treated fairly by Harold Ballard and did not return to the NHL . So I guess in the end he got his
Hockey was just so great to watch back in the day. WHA was sprinkled with cagey old vets and up n coming youngsters. And as much as u see the need for safety especially in today’s game. Who doesn’t love when you could actually see the players in those bygone long locked hairdo days. Awesome video 👍👍up
Helluva goalie when on his game. Glad to hear he’s doing well in retirement.
Shaky was a treat to watch in Boston. Career here wasn’t long unfortunately. I just love your channel, great content 👍
Doug Gilmour its a RocknRolla, impossible not to love him!!
Gordie Howe's final season and Islanders win the Cup !!!
Angry J
He’s a real life shorsey
Norm is such a class act
WTF yes retire that mans number he should be in Hof
Great player
The Mahovlich curse continues here in Toronto. I wonder if had something to do with Frank being Catholic, and Imlach and Ballard being Freemasons, who are very anti-Catholic and secretive about it. Being of children of Croatian immigrant parents, there was still a lot of racism in the early and mid-1960’s.
theo was the NHL's honey badger
What a bunch of geniuses.
Very sad ending, but at least before he died he reconciled with his family. Alcohol and drugs have ruined so many lives and families, if anyone reading this is battling addiction problems, please reach out for help, there will be people to help you.
How this man survived over 100 concushions I'll never know Man was a god in human flesh.
Of course his escalation began in Edmonton.
I listened to Brian Burke's audiobook. Guess what he never talked about once. Shameful.
This man was a gladiator when he stepped in the rink.
And still Americans wonder why American society is so violent. 😂
I loved this guy. Clear the track here comes Shake.
The Hockey HoF is turning out to be like the RnR HoF... All the best are bypassed and overlooked and boycotted! Disgraceful!
I watched him with the Bruins for many years as a kid and I don't recall this dark side of him, I mostly remember his lightning fast slapshot that always missed, and I can always remember saying "if he could only be accurate just half the times."
Gilmour and Clark, what a powerful combo for the leafs!
Minor League hockey was legendary for being violent and full of fights. When I was growing up, they advertized the local hockey team with footage of fights! I'll never forget those commercials. Minor League hockey could be quite competitive back then. There weren't as many NHL times back then, and it was hard to break into the league. As a result, there were some very good hockey players in the minors. I wonder if Zeidel ever played "Goldie" Goldthorpe, the inspiration behind the character Ogie Oglethorpe in "Slap Shot", who was legendary for his penalty minutes.
And he's back now to being crazy.
Whenever I’ve seen highlights of old Indianapolis Racers games, they always seem to have a packed house. Yet they folded midway thru the final WHA season of 1978-79.
Goal.
JR was one tough m’fker. I loved seeing Hatcher take him out but respected his abilities and toughness. Should be in HOF .
What an amazing Slapshot Rick had and he was a good guy
Anyone who says Theo is a lunatic is a gutless Mor0n
He’s a hall of fame athlete
He was a warrior till the end
why don't they have fisticuffs in basketball, baseball et al?? seems it would draw larger audiences. just a thought.
Sounds like a true POS who tried to single handedly ruin hockey and should have spent time in jail.
I am so upset about this I can’t imagine what he felt .God Bless You , Theo and family
he was so good in Sega Hockey. loved checking with him.
Speak the truth and you get punishment!! Fuck the system
This is a nice presentation celebrating redemption, but there is a point or two that could use a bit of clarification. For instance, when you mention the draft, it's not clear that you are talking about the OMJHL draft in '77, as Gretzky wasn't drafted to the NHL (a lot of people don't know that). Lastly, McCarthy's highest single season NHL goal total was 39. These are just a couple minor points that would tidy things up a bit.
