- Today I'm taking a look at the Townew "automatic" trash can which can seal and install new bags automatically. Is it worth the hefty price tag?

“No, dad. Mom forgot to charge the trash can again.”

that's right out of SNL right there! :-D
I'd keep it plugged in all of the time.
@@qeelevators2960 good way to permanently fry the battery. It charges in under 1/2 a day, or 10 hours, but lasts 30 days, or 720 hours. Theres no point to fully leave it plugged in. Since a Quest 2 only has like 3hrs battery life I guess you'd always leave it plugged in as well? Tbh though with this can I'd likely just leave it permanently plugged as well, and I'd put it in my bathroom/bedroom, not a kitchen lol.
If they added a crush feature it would be much more appealing for the price
Good idea
Was thinking the same thing. Or compression of some sort.
It already had a blower, why not a suction feature like a bag sealer which compresses the bag by taking the air out?
@@m.r1525 that may be true. But the fectures being offered now at this price is not worth it. If they could somehow add a very useful feature, like compression, for around the same price (maybe a bit higher but not too much) then it may be worth it. If not then the whole thing is a bust.
Got a crush feature you are going to be paying way more than what you would want to. That requires hydraulics
If it was bigger and cheaper, I'd consider getting one.
It's clever technology, I just hope it's reliable.
I actually purchased this a few months ago specifically for my bathroom. I think it is the perfect size trashcan for the bathroom. The fact that it conceals the trash is a plus. I am a neat freak, so NOT looking at bathroom trash was initially what I was looking for. Glad I purchased!
I'm thinking of try it for my bathroom trash can as well but the price still concerns me in the long run

Such is the case for a lot of inventions. A novel idea, a new way of doing things: but not practical.

They should introduce black hole in it so that trash will automatically transfer to other universe 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I see that James is a man of culture sporting that Waluigi shirt.
I think I would prefer it being a foot pedal operated lid that automatically seals the bag when it fills up.
I like the way it sells it but I dont get why they didnt get a foot pedal operation for the top lid.
kinda expensive in general
I'll buy it when it goes on discount as they try to liquidate inventory due to bankrupsy. I don't see the market being big enough to warrent them staying afloat at that price.
It's definitely interesting but again, too expensive for the limited market it caters to.

I honestly thought the lights were ultraviolet lights to kill bacteria not charging indicator lights. Would of been a helpful feature possibly for the cost.
Ultraviolet light would only clean the surface you can see. Everything would still be dirty.
Ultraviolet couldnt pass through the bag. Maybe if they were on top
thaught the same
Uv could damage the odor molecules reducing smells, but it might also damage the bag itself.
😅😅😅😅be
It's super cool but I agree with you on it needing to be a bit bigger. It's great for an office or room trash can since those are usually smaller but the price tag seems a bit high. The other issue appears to be the infrared lid thing. Not a fan of the timer on that thing, hopefully the newer ones have a feature to keep the lid open for a bit longer or all together
Right? I'd rather spend twice the price for a standard kitchen size can. Way more niche at this size
The bag sealing was actually impressive. A bigger version of this would be great!
The fact it’s closing while ur still putting things in it completely ruins it
Nick Jeffrey when you throw something out, its normally just one pice of trash, but thats what the button for it to stay open is for, for when you have several pieces of trash

5:38 Had me in tears aw poor Bailey 😂😂😂
Proprietary trash bags make it a no-go for me.
Yeah agreed. That thing looks like it actually works pretty well but proprietary bags and their fairly small size (honestly looks about the size of a plastic grocery bag, and I can pack those full where this would seal the bag when I'd consider it only half full) me no like,
I don't think it technically uses trash bags, seems that when it seals the bag, it creates a new "bag" from the seal. So what you're buying is one long roll of a plastic cylinder that the device heat seals to make bags, this is why his first bag (of air) is much smaller than his full bag (and then the final speed test bag is between the two in size).
Keep in mind it's pretty much brand new to the market so "others" haven't had a chance to produce bags at this stage. But like most things like this, you can bet some other company will eventually make something cheaper for it.
@@jaysecure only if it is popular. If they did a larger one as he said and they got the price for a larger 13 plus gallon one to around this price i could see it having a market. Price really will limit how many people will try it.
Yeah but they're making a bigger one. When they do, I am getting it for sure. Trash cans are disgusting, and not having to close and replace bags yourself is great

I love your videos! I would love to see a review of the misen knives and pans!! They promise to be premium but at a more affordable price.
Nope. I wouldn't pay $120 for this unless it came to where I was to take the trash from me so I don't have to get up.
Maybe they should make something like a Roomba assistant to do that!

So basically it's a well trained dog you want.
Bailey was like: ahhh it's after me , get away get away hahaha.
Poor Bailey
Your excitement at watching that trash can go was so wholesome and endearing I love it
I've got several trashcan's like these! One in the camping trailer and in my motorhome. I also got a small one in the bathroom and a large one in the kitchen! Especially in a camper it's ideal; no smell's and no hassle to tie up the bag! From the same brand I recently bought the 'DRY FLUSH TOILET'; absolutely brilliant! Each and every 'do' is sealed! There are 14 bag's in the cartridge for the toilet and after the last bag is used, it will open and after the new cartridge is placed it will close itself!
I think your conclusion is spot on: it's a great proof of concept now but I'll wait until future generations get bigger and/or cheaper before buying in.
When I first saw that I thought the lights were ultraviolet to sanitize and keep the smell down. So they aren't ultraviolet?
That's what I was thinking too. If it is a UV-C light source (the sanitizing spectrum of UV) then leaving the light on while the lid is open is a very bad design. UV-C exposure can be very damaging to exposed skin and to the eyes. Not to mention all the ozone it produces as well.
The original idea was from Xiaomi back in 2018 with UV light inside. Also it was advertised as a toilet trash can, not counter top.
Who says uv light keeps smell down? Any proof to that?
@@nowonmetube UV-C is energetic enough that it is capable of destroying the DNA and nucleic acids in cells and microorganisms. Since a lot of odors, especially in garbage, are caused by molds and bacteria breaking things down, killing or disrupting those microorganisms reduces the smell.
The danger is that it has the same damaging effect on human cells and DNA. It's similar to UV-B (the kind that causes sunburns and skin cancers) but is much more energetic and so is capable of doing a lot more damage at a much faster rate. Most commercial applications of UV-C try to contain the light with enclosures or otherwise avoid exposure to humans and animals.
The sun also produces massive amounts of UV-C but fortunately most of it is blocked by the upper atmosphere.
If you still have questions just do a web search for "ultraviolet germicidal irradiation".
@@Okusar thank you for the thorough explanation! You meet the most interesting people on CZcams.
First of all ... thanks for such a good video, and well I bought the garbage can .(it was at the end of June) I just want to say that my garbage can if it opens around a foot and a little more, it also stays open until I get the hand off (surely the company is still working on it) for me the size is perfect, I bought it with 6 rounds of bags for 32 dollars extra (which is a weekend dinner for me) it is not too bad, but i don't worry about bags for a whole year. I would have liked to have a simple human brand , but they are too big for my kitchen, in any case I am happy because looks great . (after 2 months continues working Ok)
Luv it I want one :) and I also think the led Indicator lights is a brilliant idea on the inside otherwise you would constantly be moving the trash can to check the battery status that way you can also charge it before it completely dies...wow!
Looks more of an inconvenience with that auto opening and closing.
And you also pay premium for that inconvenience.
It really takes no effort at all to put your foot down on a pedal... Why does anyone think a motion sensor on a trash can is a good idea?
Snizel Yea I agree. It looks like a hassle really. It also seems like it would be super convenient for my dog to make it open so he could grab stuff out of it.
the sensor is meant for like single pieces of trash. you know... normal use. but if throwing a lot away. it has this handy feature which was shown in the video, where you press the button and it stays open.... crazy how they thought about that.
@@stevewright8284 and then you touch the button with dirty hands getting the button all grimy after a few uses
It looks cool but I just can't get over how they're charging $20 to $30 for 75, 4 gallon bags
Yeah, we don't buy bags that small but can't you get something like 20 of em for $1?
@@vgamesx1 maybe real cheap bags but I've gotten like 45 decent bags for about 2.50.
@@vgamesx1 I just bought 225 five gallon bags, from Amazon, for $16. There's cheaper, thinner versions that's cheaper.
thats because these arent actually bags, its a long tube of material that creates bags from the seal, when the heat seals the bag, the other side of the seal becomes the bottom of the next bag..... however thats even more ridiculous for the price since a long tube of material is way cheaper to make than actual individual bags :/
BIODEGRADABLE BAGS
I think it might be useful to put on the counter and put food scraps and vegetable bits in bc you can hold a cutting board and a knife while the trash can opens itself, though the timer is a bit short. And the bags are sealed so bugs won't get in after you take it out.
We had one of these automatic lid opening trash cans as well and what we found was that the sound of the lid opening and closing was very annoying after a while and the lid never stayed open long enough to put extra trash in. Ours did not automatically seal the bag or dispense a new bag but in my opinion just a foot styled opening lid one is much better.
Impressive but I like my Simple Human auto open trash can. I don't like the way it closes while you are still putting things in it.
Jack Burton This is Jack Burton in the Pork Chop Express, and I’m talkin’ to whoever’s listenin’ out there.
Noone puts a whole bag worth of trash at once. And there is a button to keep it open. He was abnormally filling it.
True, I have a 13 gallon trash can like this the simple human one and it has a countdown meter on the front that counts down from 5 seconds to let you know that the lid is going to close, it’s nice when you have a lot of trash to put in there so you can just motion for it to restart the timer if you need more time instead of having it close on you while throwing things away
@@oortcloud1416 No, but it is fairly normal to throw 2-3 items into the trash one after the other, especially with something as small as this it'd be unlikely to fit one big lump of trash in all at once.
Mike Savicky good catch!
The germaphobe in me loves this. My wallet on the other hand.
The pup cracked me up 😂
I can see this being ideal for someone who is handicapped. I got a Simple Human motion/voice 12 gal., wide top can. It opens when you say"open can" and "close can". Also motion senses -- great when my hands are full with anything messy. It holds a lot, and is a metal, solid build. It doesn't seal the bags, but I LOVE the convenience. It was pricy $199.00, but a year later it's still going strong.
I wouldn’t mind using that exclusively for my cat’s litter. Once the smell gets too bad, just press the button to seal the bag.
They sell some diaper canisters that iv see the top spins (if its empty the bag just spins if it's full or halfway filled it will "seal" the bag you only need to tie it)
Save yourself alot of money
Oooooh. Good idea! Right now I use grocery store plastic bags to bag the litter. I buy the litter in those large tubs. I have the full tub I use to replenish the litter, and an empty one I use for dropping in the soiled bags. By the time it's full of soiled litter, it's about time to get a new bin of fresh litter, and I can switch out the bins again.
@@bobcarn gross, why not toss the bags out as soon as you can instead of hoarding a bin of cat poop
Wouldn’t a diaper bucket be much more practical and more reasonable and environmental friendly in use? Would use much less plastic, since it twists and seals just after each scoop of litter/poop? Ooops, see someone else said this already... PS! I recommended such a bucket to a lady with a stomi (bag on her belly) and she loved it, she was so worried it would smell when she changed while travelling etc, and the bucket proved to be a godsend for her...
Ray Stull - It’s not practical for everybody, easy if you have your bins in an attached garage, but if you have to go out, down the hall, down X number of floors to the garage in the basement and down the garage to where the large bins are, you may not want to do that every time one of your several cats does a little #2... Just sayin’...☺️
The rings are almost a dollar per bag (80 cents) for the regular ones and just over a dollar per bag ($1.2) with the biodegradable ones. $119.95 for the trash can itself. You'd have to seal and throw away 120 bags before you're down to having payed $1/ used trash bag, but by that point you've also spent roughly $100 - $150 on the bags themselves. Which also is what you'd be stuck with paying for bags yearly if you filled up 1 bag every 3 days or so.
you get 3 Rings with each 25 bags not one. so its a third of your calculation
Having the light inside let's you see when you need to charge it. Do you want to be turning it around to look away the back to see if it needs charging?
Never thought I would be watching bin reviews at 10:30pm 😂
Bailey: no thank you, Thing!
Can see one flaw with the trash can...dogs (and cats) will figure out the sensor and get the food. 🤣🤣
Muze Rhythm nah, I’ve had a trash can that has a “no touch” feature for about a year (it was like $30 and much bigger than this, plus it was cool at the time). I have 3 dogs and one that can actually reach the trash can’s sensor if she wanted to and she has yet to figure it out.
@@michaelgriffiths8329 Just wait..they're watching 👀 you and play dumb but one morning you'll find it open and they will blame each other.🤣🤣 (just joking😁)
I bought one and love it. I use it for what I scoop from my cat’s litter bin. When I am scooping I press the button a quick second. The lid will remain open until I press it again.I will also use it for misc trash if I am near it. I rarely fill it all the way. I push the button a few seconds for it to seal the bag about once a week.
If it had the "twist bag closed" as it's closing like the Munchkin diaper genie, I would totally buy it. Awesome review!
It sure Looks like a modern looking "diaper gene"
I’ll admit that I’m not that impressed either. To me, if it compacted the trash when full to allow more trash to be put in it would be better.
I can see my cat learning how the trashcan opens up and finding her digging between the trash
I'm pretty tall and I already dislike bending down to throw something away. Im not trying to touch my toes everytime I want to throw something away lol.
I’ve got this for my son’s nursery. I love that it seals the bags for me so I don’t have to smell the diaper stank as I tie up the bags. Well worth it to me!
Diaper genie's are so much better though.
@@omens_slays They work, but compared to this, there are a bunch of extra steps with the Diaper Genie to seal the odors. If you can afford it, I would rather have had this for my nursery and then when I didn't need it there anymore, I could ave used it for when I cleaned the liter box! lol
Bags worth more than your diapers

That's a pretty cool trash can, if it was a bigger size and less money I might think about getting one. Awesome review James!
Maybe when they have some competition and the price goes down I would consider buying a bigger model. Thanks for another awesome review.💜💜💜
Hey do you happened to know how to shorten range of IR sensor for this recycle bin? Mine is always open when I put it beneath table.
I’m guessing it would be most useful in a bathroom where you wouldn’t want to touch the can to put in trash or see what has been discarded while changing out the bag.
As a professional cleaner who has cleaned in hundreds of peoples homes, I can say 100% that these garbage cans are NOT worth $5, not even close to the humongous price tag. Most of the time it detects motion when you walk by and stays open so then it smells. So it stays open for no reason most of the time, useless. And $120 isn't even expensive for these kinds of cans, here in Canada at Bed Bath and Beyond, there's multiple over $150 or even $200
+1 I have a bin that gets activated by a sensor and it is constantly going off everytime someone walks past.
i was watching one of your videos from a couple days ago the one with the "right cup" if you wanted a good flavored water by smell to try i've heared the water bottle called air up is pretty good, its pretty expensive since it only sells in europe right now though
Hey a year after , does it still work ? i need to know before i buy it,because i saw another video and the sensor didnt work after a while.
The constant waving would annoy me. If they had just the automatic tie and bag replacement, that would be fine
I said "wooooah" at exactly the same time James did when that second bar came down at 3:53 :'D
Does the charge indicator lights change color when it needs to be charged? That's the only way i see them making sense inside the trash can.
I have 2 trash cans that open when something comes close to the unit. I use one for trash and the other for recycling (the cans are one unit). I love it. Not easy to change the bag (don't need one for recycling) though but we got used to the lid opening by itself and when we go elsewhere, we look like idiots waiting for the lid to open, waving our hand over it. You have to remember that with recycling and composting, we are generating less and less garbage so that size might be just enough to last awhile.
This should be a $40 item that sells with the three refill rings for an additional $5.
The higher they charge you for the refills and the trashcan itself makes it seem more like a luxury novelty item.
Yumifreak3 it new I see this being the future for slot cheaper too. Just wait for a bigger company to buy them off.
For sure thought my internet froze at the 4min mark for few seconds
can this connect to iphone or alexa so that i can remote it while outside? the lid should use voice to open and close.
how do u fix it when it brake? u can electrician? also when it reseal and lose top part what happens if u put hands betwen?

how well do those bags seal up? I have seen people that throw half of a 64oz fountain drink in the trash because it melted down and became watery. so the question shouldn't really be about the can, although the lighting placement seemed dumb, but the capacity and strength of the bag. how much can you stuff into it without the bag exploding or breaking the seal when you take it out. my nephew manages to get these insane trash bags on garbage day that seem to way 30 lbs when he finally brings it down from his room. and like I said he throws drinks in his trash, does that sealer make it water tight?
Is there a way to recycle if there are no recycling centers in your area? I should very much like to know.

Everyone who used it here said the same thing: Needs to be bigger!
Freakin' Reviews - Everyone in North America, I bet. I don’t know anyone who has the usual American size trashcan here in Norway. We just don’t produce as much trash as over there, that can is more than big enough for the trash that doesn’t go in the recycle bins or igloo’s (we have food/compostable, paper, plastic, glass/metal cans, batteries/electric, bottles for deposit(you get money back for them at the store) and what doesn’t go in any of the others, which means that can doesn’t need to be huge).
I have a 13 gallon trash can like most americans but it takes me about 2 weeks to fill it one time. (Family of 2 with 2 dogs). This can would be perfect for me in capacity but the height would be an issue with the dogs in the house. It would be perfect for a pull out trash drawer though, if the button was on top.
1auntievenom That's another difference - family of 5 here, with the dog and 3 cats. Even if I had the recycling you do (and as rural as I am, I don't see it happening) we still would go through a lot more trash.
@@WintrBorn I think that is a crying shame that rural places do not have access to recycling in 2020. I, being in the city, do have recycling but it has been massively cut because china is not taking our crap anymore. We only recycle 2 plastics, paper, tin, aluminum and steel.
In my house, we do not purchase food items that come in plastic in the first place where we can help it. I have a berkey water filter and a reusable bottle that I never leave home without. I compost and before I could compost, I used a worm bin. We have been brainwashed to think that we need that stiff and we do not. Our planet has limited resources and our lack of respect for her is coming at great cost.
Reduce, reuse, recycle, refuse, rot!
Hang on, I have to go plug in my trash can.

I wonder how well that seal handles liquids? Under stress will it hold up?
I think this looks like it's ideal use-case would be on a kitchen bench for bagging scraps. You don't need to touch it when cooking and the bags heat seal which would hold in food odours.

Damn right, son.
Same it would get annoying 8f the sensor dosent work as welk as it should my pedal can works EVERYTIME
A trash can and the hairbrush are nearly the only thing left that isn't electronic and "smart", we probably need to leave it that way.
at the end of the review:
"...so in conclusion, it's trash"
I can understand the use on this. However I think they should have a sensor on the side facing down so you can just step in front of it and have it open. Also, I would much prefer no lid so I can just toss and go but people with kids might have issues. Maybe a silicone seal on the lids to help keep in odors. As for the charing indicator, I can guess that's on the inside so when you use it you see those lights that remind you when to charge it. Though I feel like a constant power supply would be better for some cases. This would be perfect for diapers and such though. Auto seals the bag and everything. It would be cool if it had a front panel where it could push/eject the bag before it auto changed the bag. So you could just walk up and see the bag and grab it and use the trash can in one shot.
The ring of trash bags is cool, since that's actually very close to how the plastic is manufactured before it's formed into flat bags. Love the auto seal, auto reload. Give me that on a 33 gal can.
Great review! It’s very cool but a little pricey. Is Bailey still scared of it?
No way I'd buy this. Initial cost, then refills? Plus, its teeny!
