I always tell people Hard Drives are like light bulbs. They are rated for so many hours of use, and then they just go bad. Sometimes they seem to last forever, and other times, they can just fail long before they are supposed to.

@target_relative Well, my analogy was more of a loose one. I used to refer to hard drives as light bulbs, because that was a common household item people were familiar with replacing on a seldom, but certain basis. If people think of their hard drives as something that is bound to fail over time, people are more open to put thought into backups. Rather than make plans to find how to make your drive last forever, think how you can recover from a hard drive failure, and how not to lose your most important files if you were to have one go.

My hypothesis is that brown outs or sudden power loss then back to full power is a drive killer as well as complete system killer. I have battery backups on all of my electronics. I also have a whole house generator. The whole house generator protects you from power loss however the battery backups protect from the whole house generator. When a power loss happens the whole house gen takes about 10 seconds to restore power. Therefore the battery backups protect from that 10 second loss of power. The average system can benefit by using a battery backup. In my opinion the battery backup is the best protection for all electronics.

Sometimes CHKDSK /f is enough to fix the problem. If you don't mind copying everything off the drive onto another and reinstalling the OS, you could try reformatting which will sometimes ignore bad sectors and allow you to use the drive without problems.

@@writerpatrick Thank you. Fortunately, this D: drive is only for the flight simulator; there is no OS on it. However, the flight sim also has addons management programs that are on C: and link to D:. I am not sure if copying everything on that D: to an external drive, then formatting D: , then re-copying everything from the external drive to D: would work, or not cause the simulator to fail... Mmhh...

Have you tried reinstalling windows? If you cant reinstall windows through the bsod then try booting with a windows 10 iso image via your desktop/laptop manufacturer in the bios. I know Dell's is called SupportAssist OS Recovery which you can access in the bios. If you don't have that option then try getting an iso image with one of the tool applications suggested in the video using another computer, and then boot with that image on the computer with the BSOD. If windows is installed on the hard drive you think is dead then yeah, its dead. Pay attention to the specific BSOD errors that appear when you boot and try googling them.

Most of the time it is not actually the drive going bad, it losses its magnetic properties over time. What needs to be done is a Full Read/Write on the entire drive of course this will erase any data and you will have to reformat it too. Refreshing the magnetic properties will fix most errors. If you hear the Clicking sound then well your controller is going bad. Remove the drive from the old case and buy a new HD Case with the controller card. Done this with many drives over the years and saved them. Scanners do not do much good as I do not waste my time with them. Norton for DOS was the best Bad sector fixer. Hard to perform the right test while on the computer. SpinRite is the Best Software for renewing your HD, but it is not cheap.

Then it would not start up at all... and I realized that I had not heard the fan as I always had. Turned out that the man drive burned out. I’ve replaced it with an iMac Pro. I guess I have been lucky. Of all the hard drives I owned since 1992, I've only had 3 that did not last 10 years or more. One was a 1996 WD 3.5" 1.6GB IDE that died in 2002.Another was a 2005 WD 2.5" 150GB IDE external drive that had been dropped a few times. It died in 2013. The last was a 2009 WD 3.5" 500GB SATA "Green" that died in 2018. I still have a number of IDE hard drives from the early 2000's that still work up to now, including a 120GB Hitachi/IBM "Deathstar." I also bought a number of Seagate 3.5" SATA hard drives in the early 2010's. So far, they're okay with most at +5 years. I'll be happy if they last 10 years. Merry Christmas y tu!

HD Tune Pro - Error Scan shows how many bad sectors there is if its been new drive and later 3 blocks gone red - change drive, i rescan my drives every 6-12 months even tho i have 3 backups of files lol (12TB WD GOLD took 14 hours to check sectors, i never do fast scan)

    Hi there!
Someone asked me this question and I have no idea how to answer. So I told him I would check with my on-line guru - YOU!
Large HD being used as THREE partitions, D, E & F. Common sense dictates when ANY portion of the drive goes bad... TIME TO BACK-UP AND REPLACE. So I already KNOW this. BUT, he has a relatively NEWish solid state 2TB, and is wondering if he can just sort of 'go with the flow' of understanding that the ONE partition is now toast, but just continue using the other two until he starts seeing some 'flakiness' of another, and THEN pop for another drive? Or will that wasted partition have some sort of negative impact with the other two partitions? Or at least any that YOU have known of or heard about? Again, he KNOWS he should just get another 2TB SS Samsung drive, but it is less than six months old and he thinks it is just a BAD sector or such.
As always_ YOU DA MAN!!! ✨🤗✨

Adata Ultimate sucked big time. I used 4-5 of them to friends machines (Windows and Macs) cause they were cheap and in one year one died and all others somehow managed to corrupt the installations more than once.
