Audiences have never seen a story like that of the Antetokounmpos. After emigrating from Nigeria to Greece, Charles and Vera Antetokounmpo (Dayo Okeniyi and Yetide Badaki, respectively) struggled to survive and provide for their five children, while living under the daily threat of deportation. With their oldest son still in Nigeria with relatives, the couple were desperate to obtain Greek citizenship but found themselves undermined by a system that blocked them at every turn. When they weren’t selling items to tourists on the streets of Athens with the rest of the family, the brothers - Giannis (Uche Agada) and Thanasis (Ral Agada) - would play basketball with a local youth team. Latecomers to the sport, they discovered their great abilities on the basketball court and worked hard to become world class athletes, along with brother, Kostas (Jaden Osimuwa). With the help of an agent, Giannis entered the NBA Draft in 2013 in a long shot prospect that would change not only his life but the life of his entire family. And last season, Giannis and Thanasis helped bring the Milwaukee Bucks their first championship ring in 50 years, while Kostas played for the previous season champs, the Los Angeles Lakers.
“Rise” stars Dayo Okeniyi, Yetide Badaki, Manish Dayal, Taylor Nichols, introducing Ral Agada and introducing Uche Agada. The film was directed by Akin Omotoso (“Vaya”), written by Arash Amel (“A Private War”) and produced by Bernie Goldmann (“300”). Giannis Antetokounmpo and Douglas S. Jones served as the executive producers.

It's because, there are so many Nigerians doing great things all over the world, but they are usually hailed as citizens of other nations and Nigeria itself is known as a bad place where everyone there is bad. So much so, that, Nigerians find themselves discriminated against. Just two examples, Nigerians cannot have a simple payment utility as PayPal because, everybody knows Nigeria to be a major scam country. Nigerians find it difficult to go to other countries because of high visa requirements. So things like this, makes it hard for Nigerians to contribute to the world and realise their potential. It's just the way the country is structured from colonial times that enables corrupt leaders to keep emerging and keep holding the country down. So I hope you will understand. But change is coming, though.

I know people are the same over the world but I somehow I believed Nigerians can achieve many things if given the opportunity. Some are lucky to become doctors, professors, businesses men etc. but many end up in the shadows. Off course this applies to all so socio-economical circumstances are imperative to human growth. Sheer luck, right place, right time, helps as well.

As a Milwaukee resident, born and raised, I am so grateful to Giannis for everything he’s done and continues to do for our city. He is a beacon of hope in a league that has been defined by selfishness, greed and arrogance for decades. His humility, his honesty, his integrity, his work ethic, and his loyalty are almost unheard of from a star in any major sport in the US. Can’t wait for this movie. Milwaukee loves you, Giannis!

Generally stories about a player are best after a career is over. But Gianiss' main story will always be about his incredible development and his story from childhood to greatness and less about the entireity of his NBA career. That story is over, hes made it all the way to the top. Lets show all these kids from all over the world that basketball is a sport anyone from anywhere can play with dreams of making it to the NBA. And now Gianiss can begin adding to his basketball legacy and maybe in 15 years we get a documentary about his multiple championship runs, multiple MVP seasons, and the players that helped him along the way. For now though im excited for a movie that will probably define many kids dreams of playing in the NBA.
Greatness is an understatement when we think of Giannis! He's a living legend and he's made everyone here in Wisconsin proud! Way to go Greek Freak!🏀🏆💪💜✊

I just watched the movie with my mom, our hearts were moved. It opened my eyes to the wickedness immigrants were shown in a developing country as-well as the hardships they had to go through, I love how through the whole movie they put God as their strength, I love it

Not to put a downer on an incredible story of hard work and perseverance, but what about all the other illegal immigrants that don’t become superstars and highly valued bc of the money they bring to the NBA or whatever other companies? It’s still not right to go into any country illegally. Do it the lawful way like many others. It’s not fair to those families that wait in line and do necessary paperwork and/or background checks.
And, yes, my father did it the correct way to come to the US and then sponsored his brother and family to move over as well. Took many years, but they did it.

I am 42 and was watching basketball since the first championship of Michael Jordan back in the early 90's.I have in my memories all the Olympic games since 92 in Barcelona.I have never seen a story like this .It is one of a kind like the DNA of Antetokoumbos,a story with a lot of pain but with more victories,a story which will be go bigger and bigger 'till it proves the magic of all the sports ,the magic of winning first in Life and after all , winning everything he and his family want!

I think you ve already seen some of this truth in the trailer. Giannis indeed experienced racism in Greece, but also a lot of love and support before he became who he is now.
He is a Great athlete with exceptional personality. But Yiannis's parents came to Greece back in 1991. He was born IN Greece along with his brothers (except Francis). Back then there wasnt any illegal imigrant crisis and the number of them was really small. Nowdays what is happening is a whole different story and surely wont be solved with Yiannis's intervene.

I just watched this, it was fantastic, I remember seeing an interview with Giannis Antetokounmpo on 60 Minutes years ago, and this biopic on his life and ascension was well done, and inspiring, I enjoyed the real footage at the end and the little writeups on what happened to the other family members.

It's crazy how much racism they experienced in Greece and how some greek people called all kinds of bad racistic words before they were famous and now all of Greece is proud of those guys. As a Milwaukee fan myself I have never been so hyped for one of these movies. Finally showing an amazing story for one of our own players, and one we are so lucky to have you can’t put it to words.
Although I liked the movie, the real story was different! Gianni's parents moved to Germany first, were Charles played soccer in a lower league without contract. After suffering an ACL injury the Germans throwed him on the streets without health insurance he could not get the surgery. His career was ended. Then one Greek man heard about Charles and Veronica and offered them to live in Greece were they could stay and work in a church. I am not sure about the Turkey intermezzo, but as far as I remember, nobody ever told this.

As a former Chicago Bulls fan (I haven't watched the NBA or played an NBA video game since 1998 until the 2021 Playoffs), now a Milwaukee Bucks fan, I expected nothing less from the living legend who rekindled the long dead fire in my heart that loved basketball. He deserves to have his own movie or television show, because his story, his struggles and outlook on life is inspirational to all.
