    As an Australian who didn't grow up watching NFL but love it now, the OT rule in my eyes is THE stupidest rule in any sport in the world. How you can have a team of guys who have given their all the whole 4 quarters (and in this case the whole season) and not even give them a chance to answer is beyond me. I hated it when it happened to the Chiefs, I hate it in regular season games, and I hated it in this game.
    It would've been the greatest football game of all time if it wasn't ruined by the OT rule. Imagine if that could've gone to double OT. Or even back and forth TD's before someone makes a stop to win the game.
    And you can't say that it's fair because the D gets a chance to stop them. Because if the D gets a stop, they don't win the game, they just give their offense a chance to play for the win. That means that whoever wins the toss only has to have things go right for their offense to win, whereas the team that loses the toss has to have things go right for their defense AND their offense. So winning the coin toss gives you a statistical advantage.
    Hell, if they're worried about playing too long, why not give both teams a go with the ball from the 20 yard line. Fastest based on the clock to make a TD wins the game. If both teams make a stop, whoever gained the most yards wins. At least then both teams get an even chance with both their offense AND defense.

    • @korlu01
      @korlu01 Před 2 lety

      @@yzfool6639 okay. The coin toss at the beginning of the game lets the winner of that choose whether they possess or defend first right. At the beginning of the second the exact opposite of their choice occurs. Meaning: the luck granted from winning or losing that coin toss is essentially negated and plays a very minimal if not non existent role in the outcome of the game. Once a tie occurs, the luck of that coin toss is then amplified exponentially because - just like in the chiefs vs bills game - the team who wins the coin toss is granted BY FAR the easiest path to victory by scoring a TD on the first drive. If the loser of that coin toss was given a chance to match that drive, even if a TD was scored, it would then make the outcome of said game overall more about skill/effort and less about luck. Hence why NO TEAM in the history of the NFL playoffs has ever deferred from getting first possession after winning a coin toss in OT. Okay?

In 2010 the field goal sudden death was done away with and only a touchdown on the 1st possession made it end in overtime. For playoff games what if the team that's down get's 1 possession to answer the score. If they don't get a 1st down it's over. A suggestion I had made in a forum elsewhere a while back was that the teams should be allowed to match until one team gets the ball back with a lead. You always get a chance to tie or go ahead. You don't get the dramatic walk-off TD that way, but I prefer it to the coin-toss winner winning 91% of the time.

    • @taputechnic

      @@Noordhof Good question. The team that gets the ball first actually has a disadvantage: they have to worry about field position. The team that gets the ball second knows in advance whether they need to score or not, and will use their 4th down accordingly.
      One of the Monday-morning analysts also had an intriguing idea which I never heard before: in overtime, one team decides where to spot the ball, and the other team chooses whether they want the ball first or not. I still kind of like my idea better, because Mahomes and Allen could have advanced 99 yards no problem.

  • @KarlKnox
    @KarlKnox Před 2 lety

    My pitch: each team gets the ball 5 times. You can put the ball anywhere you want to start, but you have to score on that play. The number of points you earn is equivalent to the yard line you start on for a TD, or divided by 10 (rounded down) for a FG. Examples: snap from the 12 yd line, TD = 12 points. Snap from the 40 YD line, FG = 4 points. Botch the first 4 attempts? Down by 70? Snap from your own 29 and go for the win!

    What they should do is the same as it is now, but instead of game ending after a td on the opening drive, it ends after a td and successful 2pt conversion. That way you could still win the game based off of sheer offensive dominance on drive 1, still incentivizing winning the coin toss, but it also leads to interesting scenarios. If you get that opening drive td do you go for 2 to end it, or do you take the extra point and trust your defense. If you try the 2pt and fail, then the other team wins with a successful td and extra point. Everything else is the same like sudden death after the first 2 drives, but a little tweak could make it a lot better.

If it's still tied then either turn off the game clock and do sudden death or go to long distance field goals starting at 50 yards. Also get rid of the coin toss to start overtime. Keep the overtime rules with the exception of the game being over if the first team on offense scores a touchdown. If one team has the lead after each has had a possession - game over. Meaning that if the first team with the ball scores a touchdown and converts the point-after try then the other team gets a possession. If that team is able to score a touchdown, they then have the option to kick an extra point and put the game into sudden death knowing they will be giving the ball back to the other team or they can go for the 2-point try and win the game outright.

      @yellow Arrow teams are 10 and 1 when they win the OT coin toss in the postseason. If the NFL wants to leave it up to a coin toss then there’s really no point playing OT at all. Any way you look at it, the coin toss gives an unfair competitive advantage to whoever wins it. Which IMO is unacceptable in the postseason. The win by 8 idea is interesting, as long as it only applies to the first drive. There’s so many better ways of deciding the outcome of a close, competitive game than a 50/50 coin toss.

    My suggestion... coin flip is the same, 3 time outs for each team, decide kick first or second. Safety = Lose instantly. Changes:
    Both sides get the ball ONCE. Each possession starts with a kickoff, or just start on the 25 yard line if you want to eliminate the chance of an unusual return.
    When you get the ball, if you are first, you have 15 minutes to score as many points as possible. When you do score, peg the amount of time your team used.
    Second team clock is set to the amount of time used by the first team. They have that amount of time to score more points or they lose.
    Advantages: *NO MORE TIES. EVER!* And both sides get roughly equivalent chances to win.
    Go first, set the time and put pressure (or not) on the other team to score. Have to decide if you want a 1 point extra point, or a 2 pt conversion.
    Go second and have your victory conditions be a known quantity but with more pressure if the other team scored quickly.

    The purpose of Overtime in the playoffs is to determine which is the overall better team (Defense + Offense + Specialteams).
    Why not let each team get one possession, no matter if the first team scores a TD ? If the game is still tied there could be different approaches for 2nd OT:
    a.) Sudden Death (next score wins)
    b.) 2pt-Conv-Shootout (Team B always gets a chance to answer)
    c.) FG-Shootout (Team B always gets a chance to answer: If both teams miss, repeat from the same distance. If both teams hit the FG, we add 5 or 10 more yards on the next FG attempt)

    I want to post this here to maybe create some exposure to the idea;
    OT rules, one team attempts to score(no kick off), if they get a TD, other team has to do it in the same amount of time that it took the first team, if not faster than them. Same with FG. This cuts any unnecessary time like a full quarter and creates potentially really good 2-minute drills and hurry up offenses. This ALSO gives the other team to strike back and do it better. Both sides of the team get to play and show their dominance in one way or another in a quick fashion.
    I would like to note that a once-competitive game known as "Overwatch" had this exact implementation for overtime except it was a matter of moving the objective to a certain distance faster than the opponent in a given amount of time.

If the risk it and go for 2 and make it the team wins. If they don't make the 2 point conversion the other team gets a chance to score a touch down and all they need is the extra point to put them over the other team that is only up by 6 due to the missed 2 point conversion. if they miss the extra point both teams are tied and now its sudden death.

  • @hawthornedouglas
    @hawthornedouglas Před 2 lety

    I think OT rules are fairly simple.
    1 15 minutes OT quarter with these rules.
    1. If the 1st team scores any points the second team has a chance to match or beat the score.
    2. If the score is tied after the 2nd teams possession, repeat step 1. If not, the team with the higher score wins the game.
    3. If the game is still tied after the 15 minute quarter is over, play continues but it's sudden death.
    His adds a ton of strategy because with an average TD drive taking 4-7 minutes both teams will get the ball. With both teams being able to go for 2 and neither team probably wanting to go into sudden death the game should end after each team has a possession as long as they score.

    As it stands the OT rules give a 10% advantage to whoever wins the coin toss. 60% of all OT games since 1996 have been won by the OT toss winner as opposed to only 50.2% of all beginning of game coin toss winners winning the game. It's an obvious advantage. The toss winner just has to play offense to win while the toss loser typically has to play both defense AND offense to win barring a rare pick 6 or other defensive TD. I vote both teams have to play offense and defense with the ball in OT. If we want to keep OT from dragging out then just play a bunch of single down 2pt conversions until one team fails to match the other. I think this would be really fun to watch!

    The “life’s not fair,” and “rules are rules,” arguments both dismiss the fact that the rules of any game can and do change in order make the game better. The game of football is designed in such a way that each possession is asymmetrical (an offensive team and a defensive team) but, over the course of the game, alternating possessions should prove to be a roughly symmetrical test of which team deserves to win. And if the logic is “well, the defense should have made a stop,” then the other team’s defense should have to prove a similar case in order to keep it a symmetrical determination.

And games with such high levels of strategy, skill, and investment shouldn’t have their outcomes determined by randomness. Like a coin toss.

    How about for playoffs in ot. Keep the same except for opening drive td you then must go for 2. Then as a “penalty” the other team gets the ball from own 10 and has to go the distance to tie or win with a 6 or 8 pt td. The purpose of this is if you have an ot where both teams possess the ball no matter what then there’s no advantage gained for winning toss and you will likely kick off to play D if you move to everyone gets possession. But the second team in this scenario now having to start from own 10 if team A scores td makes winning the coin toss advantageous to start on O which is should be even in the slightest way

That's somewhat similar to the college rules, but without the weird rules that take away the battle for field position and the strategy that comes with that. You could add a requirement for a 2-pt conversion as well, I suppose, but it doesn't seem necessary as eventually one of the teams will probably try for it anyway. It does technically increase the chances of a game that goes on forever, but that already exists in the case of no scoring from either team in a playoff OT. Can't say I feel too sorry for the Bills not getting their chance in OT, though, as all they had to do was avoid giving up big plays for 13 seconds at the end of regulation.

And after each team gets a possession, if they're still tied, they go again. In the CFL regular season, the game ends in a tie if both teams get two possessions and are still tied. In the postseason, I believe it continues until one team has more points than the other after both teams get possession.

      How about both teams get the ball one time, then sudden death. It’s not that complicated.

  • @BarrySeal007

    in the NHL the regular season overtime and playoff overtime are two completely different entities. regular season has 3v3 for 5 minutes until first team scores. and playoffs is 5v5 for 20 mins until both teams score. definitely pausible to have two different set of overtime rules for the regular season and postseason

      Hockey & basketball also have fluid possessions that frequently change. It's not like football or even baseball (who btw allow both teams a fair shot to play a full extra inning)

    I get the player safety argument. But the old college OT rules were epic. The 74-72 LSU vs A&M game was INSANE. I say each team gets one possession per OT with the ball at like the 50 (or maybe even further back considering how these kickers are). Whatever one team does the other has to at least match or it’s game over. Forces both offenses to fight to score and both defenses to fight to get a stop.

    Overtime you could do similar to college but start at the 50 after the first overtime you have to go for 2 from there on out

    Crazy idea coming from an Aussie🇦🇺⚜ saints fan: team who wins the coin toss, if they score they set a countdown clock for the opposition. So if u score a td in 2 minutes, the opposition have 2 minutes of play time to score or turnover on downs. If they not they lose. If they do in a shorter amount of time they win?

      I swear to goodness I had this thought myself. It would certainly solve both sides getting the ball. But you don't want to discourage the running game, so it wouldn't be able to be timed I dont think - especially when considering a major purpose of the run game is to wear your opponent's defense down by keeping them on the field. I think a simple guaranteed both possession thing would be good.

      I think that would get really clowny. Also would get unfair against teams that are just ground and pound. It should just be drives like soccer penalty kicks where if you match each other you keep going. Its absurd a coin toss is 10-1 or whatever he said.

    What would have happend if Josh Allen had gotten a chance to answer? Let's say the Chiefs didn't even lineup a defense and they run down the field for 75 yards and score in one play. It's tied again and now you are kicking off to Pat Mahomes who needs 3 points to win it. Nothing changes, chiefs win. Get used to it, you're going to see it a lot.

      It’s a no win situation, then people would be complaining how the Chiefs got it twice and Bills only got it once.

    • @jfkusa123
      @jfkusa123 Před 2 lety

      Could be, but if the bills were confident in their offense then they could go for two after they score to win by one. That would make the chiefs have a tougher decision to kick and play it safe or to take the two to guaranteed win or get the ball back.

    Two ideas;
    -First idea, Mini game OT two 7&1/2 min halves
    -Second idea, one 15min quarter whoever has the most points as time expires wins🤷

    Not really sure what they could replace it with though, the college rules would be unlikely to be approved, and I think a full 15 minute quarter would be somewhat unlikely as well because of player safety concerns. Though I suppose they could have it be just a full quarter or even a shortened quarter only in the playoffs potentially.

      @@climaxtv5488 I'd rather it go to a FG kicking contest where they start at the 20 and move back 5 yards or something with each make until one kicker misses, but the 2 point idea isn't bad

  • @lifeforms7423

    The Bills had held the Chiefs to punts and FG attempts in the game already. It’s not like KC had gone down and scored a TD on every drive and everyone knew it was a wrap. The Chiefs had the 32nd ranked defense when they lost in OT to the Pats in 2018. The Bills had the 1st ranked defense.

    i get it rules are rules and playing football for that long does definitely adds a lot of tear to the body. yeah its supposed to be the defenses job to stop that drive and go, but it feels like its coming down to a coin toss. if a rule change to happen i believe 1 possession to the kicking team is fair enough to at least feel like you have a chance .teams with crazy offenses like the chiefs and the bills they're gonna get the score on that drive. though its definitely better than when they used to end OT on field goals

  • @MLN-yz4ph
    @MLN-yz4ph Před 2 lety

    The players got the OT rules changed from a full OT to what we have now. It was to limit the possibility of getting injured and having multiple OT's. What happens if the D rules for the next twelve hours???? Or if the O was just lights out on both sides???? Can it be better, maybe.
