I really like the katas in judo. I think for modern Judo the two first katas are the most important the nage no and katame no kata are very good when you are instructing others. I am currently working on Kime no kata which is my favorite.

I have heard that ju no kata with its slow pace and very nuanced actions really awakens the action and reaction concepts of judo in the mind and master level judoka say its the most enlightening one to learn. But im only on nage no kata now so im just parroting really.

Love doing kata, and now iam helping a few Brown belts with their kata.

I wouldn't mind this as a requirement for belt promotion. It may not test one's practical ability for judo, but it does show the understanding and execution of technique.

In Shintaro’s Yudanshakai (Hudson Judo) we had to do nage no kata to promote to black. Shin’s Dad would have us starting it during the kyu ranks.

@@WAPticon not true aikido and judo are very similar in theory and using technique though it is very unfortunate to see what mainstream aikido has become but there is a school called Tomiki Aikido who regularly spar. Tomiki was 7th Dan judoka and an 8th fan aikidoka and trained under both Sensei Kano and OSensei Ueshiba. Sorry there is a lot common theories in aikido and judo.

Talk about failing kata. Wrong grips, extra steps, holding up the opponent, bad break falls. Clearly only 1/3 of you could pass the exam. Good thing at Hudson it’s who you know, not what you know.
