I found your platform and I am going through a serious depression. I have suffered through years of it . Child abuse ( which never left it shapes you or who you think you are not worthy the emotions damage is horrendous) add on ill health no job your children going to university and my cat of 14,years having to be put down bc of cancer broke me . I can’t function and I can’t find a way through . Normally I have relied on my resilience and being stubborn. Nothing is working. So it’s helpful to realise I am not the only person who is struggling it helps to say ok I am not worthless . Anything to promote better mental health is positive. Keep going. 🎉

I have to work on my physical health which is not that good. However, I am strong and determined and I will make it.

I’ve been diagnosed with bipolar since age 20 (now age 53). (I gotta say I feel lucky to be alive between suicidal depression and manic illogical energy.) The distinction between 1 and 2 has been a very grey area in my experience, as well as for all the bipolar friends I’ve had over the years. I’ve been diagnosed with both, depending upon how up or down I’ve been. Maybe bipolar will be redefined as a spectrum, like autism. That seems more logical to me. But I’m just a patient and psychiatrists don’t seem to take my opinion that seriously. They’d rather read each others papers. Maybe the host of this podcast will look a little deeper into our experience.

I'm bipolar with a chance of borderline. To me, anxiety feels like someone's running at me with a knife in their hand, 24/goddamn/7.. The threat feels so acute. Constant fear, constant alarm; all for no reason... And it's gone on for most of my life. Dread has quite literally paralyzed me. Now I'm at the point where, if i don't regain my ability to function, the consequences will really, *really*, be dire.
    Ffffffuk.
I see now that this must be a chemical imbalance in my brain or something. No one would choose to be like this, if they could help it. All I can do is what I'm capable of.
So then... How do i stop beating myself up for being like this..?🤔😣😅

I think the point that might have been missed in the interview is the importance of working on separating your self-worth from what you perceive as success. You should never define yourself by your work. It's great that he found his purpose in being the best fighter, but I do wonder what would have happened had he not managed to win that fight. Like he mentioned in the end, would he have also defined himself as a pure failure and succumbed to suicidality?

I've heard that Bipolar II can transition into Bipolar I, which I tend to fixate on being Bipolar II. Is this common? I am constantly checking myself to make sure I haven't slipped into a loss of reality sometimes, and wonder if this isn't all just my anxiety pushing me into an agitated state that is more likely to actually throw me over the line. I'd love a video on the subject because I have talked to other Bipolar II folks and they also mentioned some anxiety around it. Is it myth or reality?

This does happen, but it's much more likely not to happen than it is to happen--the research I've read places the rate of progression from type 2 to type 1 somewhere between 15-20%. That said, it happened to me. I had only recurrent depression from childhood until my teenage years, then hypomania and depression from roughly age 16-26, then I developed full-blown mania at 26.

Sadly it probably stems from his background and culture. Travellers I'm pretty sure see it as you marry take care of the wife. The wife has the kids. It's a very old fashioned view and I'm not hating on anyone. I don't care who anyone is as long as you're a nice person. I have no hate. There is a TV series watch that you can see him and his dad definitely have old fashioned view but trying to learn. They actually accept the brothers gf who isn't a traveller that's rare. I do see some spoilt behaviour though and I feel sorry for his wife no amount of money could lead me to live the way she does she gets the brunt of his moods.
