My dad was a psychiatrist who couldn’t counsel on the spiritual working for the state, but if he suspected the problem was spiritual, he invited them into our home while we were banished to our bedrooms. There are many who have told me he saved their lives and brought them into the Church. I loved that about him.

Would love to have him speak on ADHD. I got myself diagnosed... a third time... as an adult and I now understand that it makes life unbelievably difficult.
Between the working memory issues, the tension in relationships and my brain just not getting in gear for things like prayer, I search daily for some useful information and there's just nothing available for ADHD from a Catholic perspective.

I'd like to preface this comment that as a mum of 13 kids, I've never tracked my kids as is described here. But I've ALWAYS tried to teach my children how important it is for teens and adults to develop the habit of ALWAYS letting their roommates know where they are going and expected time of return. Sonif living at home the same goes. Tell Mum n Dad where you are going to be (more or less) and expected time of return. I've done this for reasons of safety. There is a known incident here in NC where college roommates knew when one of the roommates did not return - she had broken her routine, and she was reported missing. This saved her life.
So I'm afraid I must respectfully disagree with Dr B about teens telling parents after the fact where they have been. Tell your parents, your spouse, your roommates where you are going, and more or less when to expect you back. It might save your life. They don't need every gritty detail, but expected time of return is very important. GREAT SHOW already shared it with a friend.

After that sudden break around 30 minutes in the whole dynamic changed, especially when you guys started talking about parenting. If I am talking to bereaved parents, I will never ever say, "If there is anything I can do, just let me know." When one is in grief, while those offers are well-meaning, a more concrete action plan is deeply needed and appreciated. After our son was stillborn, a friend came over and took ALL our family laundry, washed/dried/folded it, and brought it back to us. Love in action right there.
Another idea: make dinner once a week for a month for the family. Or, take the kids every week for three hours so Mom/Dad can rest and process and be still in their grieving.
There are SO many ways to respond that are more helpful than "Let me know how I can help."
Figure out a way to help and then do that.
Also recommend naming baby, no matter how long/short the pregnancy.
When interacting with bereaved parents, using baby’s name is valued as is remembering a due date, deathversary date, etc.
Enjoyed your talk at SEEK23, Dr. B, and I look forward to digging in to your book!

    • @AskaCatholicTherapist
      @AskaCatholicTherapist Před rokem +2

Hey, glad you enjoyed the talk and hope you enjoy the book. Thanks for your thoughts and your shared experience. I think there can be more certainly be more helpful responses, but in my experience and numerous conversations with folks who are grieving, the process is so varied and unique to the person, and couple that people sometimes feel resentful, impressed upon, or rushed if you decide how to help them, for them. I find that the question I mentioned gives the couple autonomy and time, while still showing care and interest. But, I think your ultimate point is right. Love is a concrete action, not a mere sentiment or thought. We should be ready to do real work to support those who are grieving (if and when they desire it).

Could you do an episode on what is considered to be a ‘grave’ enough reason to postpone or avoid pregnancy? I love your content. Especially your episodes that have to do with healing, psychology and mental health. I’m a young(ish) Catholic mom (converted 2 years ago) and was recently diagnosed with Bipolar 2 disorder. I’ve suffered from depression and anxiety since I was 12. My mood swings became severe during pregnancy and amplified even more postpartum.
I suffer a lot in pregnancy and postpartum due to my disorder. I just began medication and am feeling much better, however, sleep deprivation can trigger episodes for me. As you know, sleep deprivation is very common for parents of young kids/babies. I accept the Church’s teaching on contraception and practice NFP. However, I am very nervous to conceive again anytime soon. I worry that my mental health will take another giant hit. Bipolar women are much more likely to be hospitalized during the postpartum phase. In general, we have a high percentage of and are at greater risk of suicide compared to the rest of the population.
Does God expect me to suffer in this way for the rest of my childbearing years? Should I trust that He will give me the grace to birth and care for more children? Or, am I to be prudent and limit the number of children I have for the sake of mg mental health and the wellbeing of my family?

Prayers for your difficult situation 🙏🏻 perhaps it would be wise for you to seek out a therapist or someone who has the credentials to be a professional form of support in your life, after speaking to a good spiritual director about the moral implications of wanting to postpone pregnancy in your situation, who can help you create a plan for when you do want to get pregnant again. I think in your situation it is not a sin to be wanting to postpone, because it is sufficiently grave (don’t take my word for it though, find a good priest to talk to), but if you would like to continue having children eventually it might be useful to discuss with a professional what measures could be taken to make the experience more conducive to your mental health in the future. For example, realistically discussing budgets and saving up money to be able to afford a “postpartum doula” or some kind of support person who could help you with night feedings, and waiting until you can financially afford help before having another child. Or perhaps seeing how much your husband could help at night and maybe investing in a large freezer to store pre-cooked meals. Basically get creative and see what it would take to make things more comfortable for you and then seeing how much time it would take to be able to put such measures in place so you can safely have more children. And of course having someone to follow up with you on your mental health throughout the pregnancy and postpartum. Definitely also would help to discuss details and expectations with your husband in terms of mutual support etc.

    • @crystellesaleh4800
      @crystellesaleh4800 Před rokem

I understand these measures are expensive. I don’t think I could afford them myself. 🫤

Thanks for your your kind and thoughtful response 😊 I just started therapy again and will be getting spiritual direction for the first time this month. I would definitely need a lot of support if we do have another child (right now we have 2). I don’t think we could afford a PP doula as we’re living off of 1 income and are still paying off debt. The sleep deprivation is the toughest part for me. I love breastfeeding but it has taken a huge toll on my sleep. I want my babies to have all of the benefits of breastfeeding but it makes it really tough to get sleep at night for the first few months. We do have meal trains set up for us which is great. My biggest issue is just getting sleep. I know fed is best but I also love the bonding experience of breastfeeding.

    • @Mrs_Homemaker
      @Mrs_Homemaker Před rokem +3

@@alexmallet8162 unless you have a robust support system in place then I think what you described is a valid reason for child spacing. Remember that NFP is not "never". It's a cycle by cycle discussion of the circumstances. As for the nervousness, make sure you have an instructor for your method of NFP that you can speak with when you have questions. NFP done by the seat of ones pants, so to speak, is much more likely to create strife bc you aren't sure of the parameters and green or red days.
I have a condition in pregnancy that hospitalizes me and makes me unable to function for 6+ months - and it would be imprudent for me to basically leave my children without their mother for that period, on top of the physical toll on my body from this condition. So we use NFP and carry that cross of limiting our family size. It is a cross for many of us, and it's okay to say that.

It took many years (literally just last year) for my hormones to balance out again. I’m wondering if your body has hormonal imbalance and pregnancy is even harder on it. I’m just speculating but maybe look into balancing your hormones. There are natural supplements to take and foods to avoid that help greatly.. continue to pray on it ❤

What Dr. B. mentions about what (little) we know about the brain showing new ways we can help each other heal seems simply to be God making new "normal means" available to us thru the search for Truth proper to the scientific method. Off topic but recently NSW State Premier Dom Perottet (Opus Dei Catholic) said he abolished vaccine mandates for fire fighters in NSW but understands these covid vaccine mandates need to be in place for health workers.
Now, the situation in NSW is ALL health workers must have at least 2 jabs and the third jab they say is not "mandated" however if you apply for a job in healthcare without the third jab then you'll be the least preferred applicant, basically won't get a job without the 3rd jab.
Patients can be unvaccinated, up to 5 visitors can visit a patient in hospital at a time(regardless of vaccine status). Potentially on a 20 bed ward. There could be 120 unvaccinated people there which begs the question why can't unvaccinated health workers cannot work there.
This is against God's people. Men who wish to provide for their families are not able to work due to mandates. Can you please organize a debate on this matter. Possibly the most impactful issue in the western world this decade. How can we continue as if nothing happened when those who chose to not take a medication remain out of work and unable to work in their profession they dedicated years to.
Imagine if 10% of priests were fired due to vaccine mandates it would be scandalous. This has happened to the fathers of the home the St. Josephs of the domestic church yet we carry on as if nothing happened.
Please use your platform to challenge these ideas and have open dialogue regarding this issue. Your show is the best at presenting opposing ideas and giving the people food for thought.

They with ears to hear, let them hear:
Through the Holy Spirit, God has put it on me to preach to those lost in the devil's deceit!
Hear me when I say, ye that are Catholic have been deceived and know not God. Ye worship Mary, praying to her; when God tells his to worship none other than him. It is idolatry.
Catholicism has its own Bible and teachings, which are blasphemous to the word of God: the Holy Bible. As ye follow the teachings of man and not God; ye hear the pope, but not Jesus, yet ye claim to be his disciples!
These are but a few things I named ye dwell within; there are many more. I tell you now to repent of your sins, accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and you'll receive the gift of the Holy Spirit upon asking the Father!
There are *NO* sub-divisions of Christianity. You're either a disciple of Christ or not. A Christian is someone who follows God's word, not a religion. Who obey the Father and follow his will; not man's nor their own heart's. Unless you keep Jesus' commandments, think not the Holy Spirit will dwell within you!
They who heed this message and did what was stated with an open heart to God...
Read the Holy Bible (KJV) daily and every time before you read, pray to the Father and ask:
"Lord I ask that you give me understanding of your word, that I interpret it the way you want me to, and none of my own. I ask you in Jesus' name, amen."
    Revelation 22:8-9 KJV
8 And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things.
9 Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.
    Acts 2:38 KJV
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
    Luke 11:13 KJV
13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
    John 14:21-24 KJV
21 *He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.*
22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?
23 Jesus answered and said unto him, *If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.*
24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and *the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.*
    3 John 1:11 KJV
11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. *He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.*
    1 John 3:6-10 KJV
6 *Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.*
7 Little children, let no man deceive you: *he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.*
8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9 *Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.*
10 *In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God,* neither he that loveth not his brother.
