God is with you. It may be a good time to ask a therapist to help you conquer despair. God wants you to be well. Despair does not come from Him. You can be freed from despair by learning enough of the Truth to be set free. I am praying for you ❤

Invite it in. God is with you. Know that it is nothing. It only has power over you if you give it power. Call on Jesus, He’s right there with you walking your life with you. He has you. You two are doing your life together. You are not alone. The despair is first created by your internal messaging and then the feelings, in response lend power to it. None of that is real. It’s all nothing. You and God can do this together.

I'm a survivor of sexual abuse by a priest, and I'd really love to see a discussion on the spiritual trauma that happens with that. I've worked through a lot of it, but in the immediate aftermath it can feel like God's complicit in the abuse (or worse) because this person you were seeking God through, and often been deeply vulnerable with (I was assaulted in the confessional) has hurt you so deeply. It's really awful to experience PTSD triggers at mass or when you try to go to confession.
I do wish Matt would have a guest on about this particular subject. The Sisters of the Little Way (new religious order out of Portland) would probably be good to talk to-- two of their three founding members have suffered that kind of abuse (one of whom is Sr. Theresa Althiea, the "momento mori" nun) and they've dedicated their lives to working with people who have been scandalized by the Church. Another one would be Sara Larson, founder of Awake (lay organization that does awareness and survivor outreach work), or Fr. Thomas Berg (Former Legionare of Christ who's done a ton of work with people who have been abused in the Church). There's people who are faithful Catholics and would give good, competent interviews about this stuff, and I think it'd make a really interesting episode.

    • @FigaroHey
      @FigaroHey Před 6 měsíci +19

That would be a very serious service to the Church - and her wounded ones. I don't know if this will help you at all, but as a catechist of adults, one thing I tell them they can do when they are plagued by thoughts that open wounds or that cause them anger, envy, resentment, bitterness, fear, anxiety - any kind of thoughts or emotions that they have which, at the same time, make it impossible for them to trust in God, or obey God, or pray. It can be sinful thoughts or angry thoughts, or fearful thoughts - as long as the thoughts are harming you and not making you feel God's peace and safety and joy, you can do this. Address the thought and name it, then rebuke it and cast it out in the name of Jesus. For example, 'Spirit of lust, in the name of Jesus Christ I rebuke you and command you to leave me.' Then a Hail Mary and then 'St Joseph, terror of demons, pray for me.' It's not possible actively to focus one particular thought and actively think another thought. As soon as you find yourself going to that trauma, those thoughts, memories, wounds that unsettle your relationship with God - speak to it, name it: 'Spirit of fear/shame/anxiety/dread, in the name of Jesus Christ, I rebuke you,' etc. Or 'Spirit of woundedness, in the name of Jesus Christ, I rebuke you; leave me and do not return.'
I have never found this NOT to work, whether I was having temptations, or going over and over wounds from past harm, or on a hamster-wheel of angry thoughts... Name it, rebuke it in the name of Jesus Christ, tell that 'spirit' to GET OUT. Pray a Hail Mary. Invoke St Joseph. By the time I've done that, the thought has lost its power and disappears very quickly after that.
God absolutely wants to set you free from the memories of your abuse. That doesn't mean your memory is wiped out; it means that the memories no longer have any power over you. You have to actively recall them, and when you do, they are somehow 'dry facts' and have lost their emotional content that can cause any kind of physical or emotional or spiritual suffering in you. Every time you go to Mass, lay it all on the altar (put it in the chalice of Christ's sufferings) and any time the memories try to steal your peace - rebuke them, cast them out; call on Mary and Joseph. God wants to set you free from the trauma; he doesn't want the 'spirit of trauma' to 'own you' though your memory or triggers; he wants his Holy Spirit to suffuse you with peace and healing.
I have prayed for you. God bless you.

The question about past therapists that were Christian rather than Catholic… I feel your pain! Two of my therapists told me that my “Catholic guilt” was keeping me from healing. This was frustrating because they began debating with me theologically and I simply had to say, “Listen, I get that we have different views on faith, but it’s not my Catholicism that is making me feel shame; it’s my life experiences. I believe that Jesus is my savior and his love is for me and I am worthy of it. I just try to take responsibility where I need to.” It is upsetting when they blame my religion rather than circumstances that have happened to me.

I'm further in the video and now feel a lot better about EMDR.
But also for the people with ADHD. Be careful taking depression meds. I had MDD and PTSD cause of some horrible junk I've been through. I no longer have MDD but I do still struggle with PTSD (on occasion. It's a lot better.)
But what I've found is every time I've been on depression meds, I became suicidal. And I learned it was because I didn't have a chemical imbalance of serotonin. I was constantly overstimulated and didn't know how to practice introspection or connect my feelings with my body. So taking those meds just made that worse.
Therapy is super important. It's really helped me. And learning more about my disabilities so I can plan for what I need and learn to advocate for myself was really helpful.
Advocating was scary at first because I was so used to emotional and physical abuse and abandonment. Being honest and asking for what I needed was very scary. I was perpetually stuck in fawn or flee for a good part of my life. I still struggle with it on occasion. But what I've learned is that advocating for yourself is worth fighting to learn how to do.

I am fortunate enough to do IFS work with Dr. Crete’s organization and it’s been life-changing.
I’m a traditional Catholic, and I would say it’s the *only* model of psychology I’ve found that truly honors a Catholic life lived with Our Lord. I truly believe there is a purgative element to doing this work and that, in doing so, we are making ourselves a more fitting tool to be used by God to bring about His glory.
This is one, very good, way to keep the Mystical Body of Christ in top shape lol. 😁

I love his point about doing part work during prayer! When I’m working with my parts, whether in therapy or not, Jesus always shows up when I need Him most. I don’t know exactly how to explain it, but sometimes I’ll be working with an exile that’s very wounded and then all of the sudden, I gain a deep awareness of the Lord’s presence with that part and He heals it. Sometimes Mary will come too, with her motherly touch, especially with some of my very young parts. I always welcome the Holy Spirit into the space before I start parts work.

Dr Crete's favourite endorsement: "This beautiful book needs to be in the hands of every Christian on a journey of healing and those involved in trauma recovery work! Dr. Crete has written a book that has finally brought needed clarity to the Internal Family Systems model for Christians. As a wounded healer myself, I found that the Litanies of the Heart finally gave parts of me the language to call out to my Beloved Father in gentleness and trust.

This was a fantastic conversation but I take some issue with the part around narcissistic personality disorder. Of course their actions stem from woundedness. But the incredible damage they can inflict on other human beings with their behaviors and their often unwillingness to even entertain the idea they might have parts that need healing should have been mentioned. We can have a disposition of compassion for these individuals internally, but for many of us in relationship with someone who truly has this disorder, the priority must be to keep oneself safe from their predatory behaviors. Compassion and empathy can often work against the healthy person, as a truly narcissistic individual will use that compassion as a manipulative tool.

So glad you had this program. My book is similar. As a Christian therapist who specializes in the treatment of sexual abuse this is exactly the kind of work I started out facilitating in therapy. In the 80’s We are to love our parts into healing. The carnal nature parts are wounded and need to be healed. Sexual abuse is often at the root of porn. People don’t recognize that they have been sexually abused. First exposure to porn is sexual abuse. You can’t heal what you deny or rebuke or shame.

I went to Our Lady of Holy Cross college for undergraduate and Tulane University advanced graduate school which was 4 th in the nation in the 80’s. There are not many good therapist “out there” most don’t have discerning and the new age techniques have crept in to therapy long ago. I don’t agree with the rapid eye movement therapy that’s a form of hypnosis and I don’t use that with my clients. Carl Young and enneagrams are created by people in the occult. People in training have little discerning like I said. Most training therapist receive is secular. I don’t refer clients out because not one of the methods they have learned to help people who have been severely traumatized. However, if one prays and seeks guidance from the Lord where to go for help I believe He will do that.❤

Fr Chris Alar has a book on suffering from trauma that helped me immensely. He also has several videos that are helpful. Initially, the depression/trauma that hit him after losing his grandmother transformed his life. I highly encourage the book also. Another video(s) is Fr Mike Schmitz, he has such a gift of delivering the word in a way that he brings peace to as well world of chaos. I am currently reading Bible in a Year and it is fantastic. After I started reading the bible with Fr Mike and his amazing explanations it is almost like I can't stop reading it. I hope this helps. ❤

I think that the state of rest is dynamic. There is action involved. The action involved is of release or emptying of what is possessed in abundance. It is an inevitable need to share the good that you have received by another being. God rested after the completion of His creation. So what did God do on the day of His rest? He blessed that day and made it holy. So what does it mean to bless? To bless is to share or give a benefit or in other words to love. God loved his creation on the seventh day. If we find ourselves on our rest day engaging on things that isolate us from the rest of those who we love than we forfeit the privilege to share God's blessings. I think in order to reach the seventh day of true rest we must receive Peace first. And who brought peace? Jesus Christ. Once peace is received through His mercy we get the Blessing which is the Holy Spirit which in essence is a gift that keeps on giving.

Hey Matt, I'm hoping you can find a (forthright) answer to this question.
Why is it that abuse survivors are barred from serving in religious life? I have heard a number of vague answers, such as, counseling may be expensive if the person needs it, it may be difficult for them to adjust to the demands of religious life, ect. All of these answers seem to be lacking in a solid argument. I believe that the truth is not afriad to be questioned, and can stand up to scrutiny. So, what is the reasoning behind this?

@joanna883 The SSPX doesn't have legitimate authority according to the RCC. They're kinda a small, fringe community. Your question seemed like it was talking about the Roman Catholic Church's official stance or something. Maybe I'm misunderstanding...

    • @RosieJ7223
      @RosieJ7223 Před 4 měsíci +1

It’s also my understanding that abuse survivors are not barred from religious life. However, there is (or should be) a threshold for mental health when it comes to religious life. I think it would be troubling if the Church allowed a person who has major mental health issues, such as bipolar, PTSD, or major depression, to take a religious (or marital vow.) And because so few of the general population, laity and clergy alike, don’t really understand these disorders, it may be that many religious orders have to set firmer boundaries than they would like.
For instance, if someone had attempted suicide and wanted to become part of a religious order, and I was the authority over that religious order, I wouldn’t know how to handle that. I might know enough to know that my congregation doesn’t have the tools necessary to deal with that. I can and should work to educate myself, but we live in a world with finite time and resources, so it may not be possible.
That’s not to say that everyone has to be perfect, but we have to respect that each order knows itself better than any one individual. So they do technically have the right and responsibility to guard their order, even if the reason they can’t accept a person is the particular congregation’s own lack of resources. It’s just not possible to be all things to all people, right?

Doctors say to stay on them until they work and during that time have been suicides and homicides. Methyl b vitamins are antidepressants without the negative and dangerous side effects. The medical community does not make $ with fixing vitamin deficiencies.

We hope that it will be, because we love Jesus, he died for all to have heaven, and we desire the glory of Jesus Christ - which comes when people go to heaven to glorify him forever in heaven. Jesus DESERVES for everyone to go to heaven, especially the worst sinners, because they will have the most to praise him for. Does that mean everyone will automatically go to heaven? Not necessarily, because we can all choose 'not-God', and God respects our choice.
Jesus didn't give us the power to know who is in hell (though we can have moral certitude that someone is in heaven). But he certainly warned us enough how easy it is to fall into hell that we should not take it for granted that everyone will go to heaven. That's the sin of presumption.
Will heaven be full or empty? We DON'T KNOW. We earnestly hope that it WILL be empty, because it will be JUSTICE for JESUS, who died on the cross to save ALL, and who does NOT DESERVE for a single soul NOT to praise him forever in heaven. Jesus deserves a 100% attendance rate in heaven, because he deserves ALL the glory. ALL of it. From EVERYONE. So if we pretend to love Jesus, we must earnestly pray for sinners - especially the ones who have hurt us - not because they should be 'rewarded' for doing wrong, but because JESUS deserves their praise and gratitude forever and ever. For the love of JESUS and HIS glory - pray for sinners, pray for sinners, pray for sinners, with tears, pray for sinners.

@@brianoneel514for what it’s worth: the Creed says “He descended into hell,” when it should actually say “He descended into sheol.” Sheol is not the hell of souls that are damned. It’s a straight up mistranslation. The Word of God is inerrant, but sometimes humans still mistranslate things and those words need to be corrected. So Jesus never said “people will go to hell.” He talked about wailing and gnashing of teeth in an effort to warn people to turn from wickedness, but that’s not the same as “y’all going straight down.”
I mean, He asked forgiveness for the people who crucified Him. Obviously hell is real, but I can’t imagine a person who has a “heart of flesh instead of a heart of stone” who doesn’t at least hope deep down that Jesus will save all souls.

Then, and the Church will eventually need to offer some proper guidance on this, psychedelics in combo with therapy has been extremely effective for the worst and most intractable case of ptsd. 75% actual cure rates. Science is about discovery. There is almost nothing that is supported by “all research.” We still don’t know why you have an appendix, man.
Science is good. It’s just that being “evidence-based” is not about finding one formula for all people… and then NEVER trying new approaches (or old ones.)
