  • Betancuria is probably the prettiest place in Fuerteventura. It was the original capital of the island. Betancuria Fuerteventura is definitely worth the drive up into the mountains. It is a lovely place for a walking tour with plenty of nice restaurants to have lunch.
The town of Santa María de Betancuria was founded by the Norman conquerors in 1404, during the conquest of Fuerteventura. Betancuria, together with Rubicon in Lanzarote, were the first cities founded by Europeans in the Canary Islands and it took its name from the conqueror, Jean de Bethencourt.
As well as walking around the town I also visited the convent and ruined chapel on the edge of the town, which I had never been to before.
