    The test rig:
    The RCTestBen.ch test rig for VTx RF Power Output is a DIY setup.
    The RF Power Meter is made by ExpertRC and you can find it here: goo.gl/lfhgqd (Ebay)
    (the RF Power Meter is produced in small batches - check back if it is currently not available)
    Another similar device seems to be this one: goo.gl/wKmGua (Banggood)
    The case is 3D printed, you can find the design here: goo.gl/34pk3M (Thingiverse)
    Just to be clear: These tests are far from scientific BUT the main goal here is consistency and repeatability, so that you can compare the results between all the hardware tested. These tests focus in the transmitted power per channel/band. Channels, Bands and Frequencies are displayed according to manufacturer's spec sheets.
    The measuring equipment used has been tried and tested repeatedly before starting out this RCTestBen.ch series.
    The hardware that is tested is brand new and unused, in stock condition. Only 1 unit is tested and presented in this video. To my knowledge, this is not a cherry-picked product and certainly not a "best-of" measurements video. This is how the product performed right out of the box.
    The tested hardware (FPV AiO / VTx) is powered from a regulated DC source. You can watch the voltage and current draw throughout the test.
    The most prominent min and max values are logged on each channel of each band / power output. If you see a different value on the RF Power Meter in a still capture, it just happened to show up briefly when the photo was taken. Same applies for power consumption. It is monitored throughout the whole duration of the test and the most prominent min and max values on each channel are logged.
    The FPV AiO camera/VTx combos are tested by de-soldering the stock antenna and soldering a coax cable in its place, which is connected on the other side to the RF Power Meter. There are plenty of the exact same conductor with the exact same length from the same batch, as spares. VTx boards with u.FL (IPEX) connector are tested via a u.FL to SMA thin coaxial cable. VTx boards with SMA or RP-SMA connector are tested via an SMA to SMA cable plus an adapter for RP-SMA. All these cables and adapters are available as spares (the exact same types, from the same batch).
    Cooling plays a huge factor in the RF power output of VTx boards. Leaving a VTx running for a short period of time in room temperature results in a quick drop of power output - even by blowing with your mouth results in a quick rise in power output. All FPV AiO and VTx boards are tested with a constant airflow over both sides of the VTx PCB board. Testing is done slowly and may take up to 35 minutes, depending on the amount of bands/channels available on the tested VTx board - after all the channels are cycled through, settled, measured and logged, the first channels are re-checked in order to confirm accuracy, consistency and stability of the transmitted power.

    The test I've been waiting for! Crazy to see that after 200mw no band actually reaches the advertised power. Maybe investing in a 600mW vtx that isn't a tbs unify pro wouldn't actually get me less range like the "800mW" mode leads people to believe. Hmm..

    • @muteFPV
      @muteFPV  Před 6 lety

      A few frequencies reach/exceed the advertised power but yes, most don't. This is very common in most VTx boards I have tested.You could opt for another VTx but similarly a 600mW VTx may perform significantly less than that.

      In terms of reception .... i really can't tell a difference between my $13 vtx and the Unify ... but the unify has a lot more features and fewer grams. Really curious about the matek VTX!

    • @muteFPV
      @muteFPV  Před 6 lety

      I am curious as well. Got already plenty of VTx boards in queue but I hope to test the Matek soon.

      My only gripe is that I use the same template (music, edits etc) across all the VTx tests to save time - the test itself takes a lot of time to do. Can't do otherwise though. Data is what matters in this video series anyway :)

      Looking to get a new vtx. Already have a unify pro hv, but looking to get a matek hv. These videos are very useful to see what channel and band will perform best. But I reckon every transmitter will perform different?

    • @muteFPV
      @muteFPV  Před 5 lety

      Every transmitter will definitely perform differently. Even between batches there may be a difference.. If you mean the half 30,5mm board, I had tested it too: czcams.com/video/d8EOh5WpLNI/video.html

      I don't have one but I would be happy to get one. I am far behind my "schedule", especially when it comes to VTx tests. My new rig has been ready since several weeks ago but I am not very happy with the RF Power measurements I have been getting. I can't wait to find the time and finalize everything so I can resume testing.

    Could you test the rmrc Mach 3 and the akk 1200mw one :) please? I want to find one that’s cheaper than the tbs stuff but want it to be good for long range so it will work plus it’s nice to know

  • @changeagent228
    @changeagent228 Před 5 lety +1

    Greetings Mute. Do you have any plans to test the TBS Unify Pro32 400mW? I have one on order and just wondering how it stacks up given it weighs just 1g. In terms of milliwatts per gram I don't think it can be beaten. That's assuming it actually outputs 400mW though lol.

    • @muteFPV
      @muteFPV  Před 5 lety +1

      I want to get the new unify and the tiny vtx from hglrc too, but I don't expect to have the time to deal with VTx tests anytime soon (and do them the way they should be done ;))

    • @muteFPV
      @muteFPV  Před 6 lety

      +MrUnevik I do not know, the Unify is supposed to be fairly consistent so maybe yes.
      I ordered a Unify RACE but still haven't got around to doing new VTX tests.

    • @muteFPV

    • @muteFPV
      @muteFPV  Před 6 lety

      I cannot guarantee that each and every VTx will be exactly the same. But the pattern of the output power remains fairly consistent.

    • @muteFPV
      @muteFPV  Před 6 lety +1

      Hey +RockTouching, it is on my todo list for a long time, I am currently working on upgrading the test rig with an RFExplorer for more in-depth testing. I am doing my best but need more time to make sure that everything is 100% repeatable and consistent. Matek VTX HV and FullSpeed TX200 testS are coming very soon.

    So weird. Low power low frequencies tested highest power. High power high frequencies tested highest power

    • @muteFPV
      @muteFPV  Před 3 lety +1

      It has been a long time since I last "touched" any VTx tests but as far as I remember there was no uniform "pattern", although lower frequencies usually were performing better. Please keep in mind that these tests were far from lab grade tests. Since then I have purchased new equipment but have not had the time to get back to setting up a new test rig.
