I got it last 2 years ago, and i should say that I'm very happy with it. I love how it doesn't have a lot of technology in it. Less technology, less problem. It has whatever i need.

Me too! I can’t believe the reviewer said the interior plastics were cheap! They are superior to Honda and even the the Corolla sedans here in the US! Made and assembled in Japan was so key for me pulling the trigger on this ride. The new car adds complexity you just don’t need. Push button start, push button parking brake etc....

I got my Hatchback 2 years ago as a used car and honestly, I really like it. The seats are very comfortable. I'm not sure why the guy in the video was so harsh about this car. It's very dependable and has great gas mileage. My car has about 32,000 miles on it and has given me no problems. It has a simple design but I think that is what makes this car desirable. In my opinion, cars are beginning to become too high-tech with a lot of complicated features. I would not call this car fancy but it will definitely last a long time.
I drive a 2017 iM and it is absolutely wonderful. It is very zippy and fun to drive. And a sound system from the 1980s? Really? If touch screen consoles and high fidelity audio existed back then, then sure.

I absolutely love my 2018 Toyota Corolla iM. I agree that the 2019 has been improved in a number of ways. But that does not mean that the 2108 model is not good. When given the choice, I would still buy the 2018 model for the simple reason that it better meets my needs and budget. I don't care about leather. And no, it's not rather dull to drive as you say. It's great. And the audio system is not from the 1980s. Such graphic touch screen displays did not even exist at that time. The seats are very comfortable and the ride is very quiet compared to other similarly priced compact cars. The iM is great for long drives. My conclusion to your evaluation is a giant thumbs down. Your damning report is overly exaggerated and does not take into consideration the target audience for which the vehicle was designed. I'm very happy with my 2018 iM and I'm proud to own it. Indeed, everyone who sees it has complimented it. "What a great little car", they all say. "And what a lousy evaluator you are", says I.

I really love my 2017 Corolla IM. The more and more I see these car reviews, I realize that people are getting way too picky and are getting way too entitled with the options. when I bought that Corolla compared to my 13 Camry SE, there was so many more options that this Corolla had that my Camry didn't have before so I think that they have added a lot over the years. I think people just want too many options in a car for a cheap price and that's kind of asking too much realistically..
I have and love my Scion iM and was able to get one at the end of 2016 for $17,000.
I bought it for my daily commute of 30ish miles one way and easily get 35mpg.
Fortunately our kids are in boosters, and they fit quite well but forward facing car seats would be a challenge.
I love that it is an all made in Japan car and plan on running it for 200,000 miles or more.
That's the thing with these Toyotas, Dave... it will keep on ticking for you, I'm sure!

Yeah when this was a Scion the price was much cheaper, when they put a Toyota badge on it the price magically climbed by $2-$3000. Same with the FRS. Even with the current $1500 CAD incentive, it's still overpriced considering the 2019 is coming any day now. This car didn't sell because they had no stripped down base model, a huge mistake considering most Matrix sold were base models.
ps, I wonder if the decline of the Canadian dollar helped drive the price up. From a historical perspective, my 05 Vibe cost around 22K so I consider these to be pretty good value with the added features and 13 years of inflation factored into the price.

This was the comment I was looking for. I’m looking for to buy a used car to do road trips and I feel attracted to the style of the IM and the good reputation of Toyota.
In Australia everyone buys Hatchs. People also test drive other vehicles before they buy and most pick the Toyota Corolla Ascent Sport hatch. The Corolla hatch has been the No 1 selling car for the last 5 years. Funny how different countries have different tastes. Oh and 90% of people drive automatics in Australia now. The new Corolla hatch looks fantastic though. Im waiting for mine.
Greetings to the Southern Hemisphere. I think this is the worst review the iM got anywhere in North America.
I tried both the iM and Hatchback. The comfort and general ride and power is better with the Hatchback but it feels bigger...so much for a small car. The difference in fuel efficiency is minor. The iM is comfortable and powerful enough. I also hate that display in the Hatchback despite the streamlined dash. That display is like having a tablet mounted on the dash. If you sit low it obscures the view. I really don't need a screen that big.

I got my iM during a lease special event. I put down $1,000 and my month payment is $139 a month for 3 years. I absolutely love the car. I got mine in Barcelona Red. I wish I got the manual transmission because the CVT is too slow. But other than that. It gets me through Chicago winters and has never gave me any issues. I love the way car handles and behaves. I personally love the seats, probably the best seats I've ever sat in. I like these more than the GTI or Civic Si. Both cars I've driven. I give it 8/10

I have a 2018 iM, blue, like the one featured, but with a 6-speed manual transmission. I bought it as a daily commuter and, after 40K miles, I have to say I'm very satisfied with it. I took it on three long trips and experienced 0 issue. I also get very good mileage, averages 39-41 mpg at each fill up. This car is definitely a keeper.

For what it is, I like my 2018 iM. Got it for $16,500. My gain by typically liking cars that aren't super popular. I don't mind road noise, the sport suspension is what i like, I'll be installing a strut tower bar for better cornering. I only wish I had maybe looked into the manual before pulling the trigger on the cvt. Typically not a fan of cvt, but sport mode makes it tolerable. Body of this car is unbeatable though! 10/10 for exterior styling.

porksniffer i went on the 29th, battered them, left, and came back on the last day of the month, and put 5500 down. And said I'll just go buy a civic hatch sport if u thinking I'm paying more than that. They definately were pissed, but I got the car.
porksniffer just tell them they can let it sit there like they know it will, especially after the 19 comes out, or they can sell it to you. 😆 You have to negotiate. Most dealers have them priced 18-20k.

@@branzilla1722 sadly it was totaled at around 50k miles. A Toyota Tundra tan a two way stop sign while I was driving down a main highway road. Completely smashed my drivers side and airbags deployed.
I walked away without a scratch though, this car is incredibly safe to be in!!
Just got my Toyota Corolla 2018 loved it...smooth, affordable, lots of safety features.
If you live somewhere where they throw tons of salt on the roads, be sure to get it rustproofed so it can last a full 20 years.

The reason the IM doesn't get as good of fuel economy is because it isn't using the dreaded GDI engines so many of its competitors use. You will end up saving money because of less problems down the road and less oil changes needed!
yep, and they use tiny 4 cyclinder engines and turbo charge them to make their hp and mpg numbers better. Naturally aspirated engines might look less impressive on paper, but they no doubt last the longest and cost the least to maintain.

Just got myself a 2016 model with 160,000 KMs. Looks and runs like a new car. Just loving it. My only gripe is that it doesn't have a digital Speedometer. Hard to see the small KM numbers on the speedometer, so I'm always worried about breaking the speed limit. But all together, just loving this car. I get 5.2 L/100KMs on the highway, which is .2 Liters more than my Suzuki 650 bike. I'm in Dubai, therefore the KMs

I went to my toyota dealership to change to my winter tires, while I waited I sat in the new Corolla hatchback.... and I hated it. The lines of sight are awful and the everything felt so cheap. The IM felt like quality.
What did you think of the plastic seats this guy keeps claiming are leather?

I bought a used 2017 Corolla iM a few months back and I love it. It’s got exactly what I need and is very practical with the cargo room. I also get many compliments on how nice the car looks. It is a great value car and Toyota knocked it out of the park with it.

I definitely think the Toyota Corolla Hatch will sell more than the IM. The styling of the new Corolla is more attractive and there will be more options vs. the standard basic options of Scion as you mentioned. Great review Paul! Thanks again!
I expect the new hatch will have a more consistent and rational marketing launch than the Scion/Toyota iM had.

I'm excited for this new corolla. One thing I think they should change is .. the controls on the steering wheel . In my 2017 honda they controls have a clear crystal like set up on the buttons which will help the drawings from being rubbed off over time.

I drove my corolla IM from san jose California to LA same day for 10 hours. I had a great time driving the car. I never had an issue. My sister has a 2013 civic and i think that im's seat is better than the civic. I'd stay away from the back seat lol. It's not very comfortable imo
I am a new to Toyota and in love with them I think I want one of these I just bought a Tacoma TRD my commuter car is a honda insight but I think I might buy one of these
I like the styling of the IM more than the 2019 hatchback but it seems like the 2019 is the better choice overall with its features and mpg/HP
I test drove the Canadian 2019 Hatch XSE a week ago, and it was amazing. No traffic sign recognition in Canada due to some legal and regulatory issue though, so I cancelled my order in hope that this would be resolved. And that they would add a sunroof as an option.
The car itself really felt NOTHING like the current Sedan. Fun to drive, very nice materials (real leather in some spots, aluminium hood etc), lots of sound dampening in the XSE. Rear multi-link suspension is really well-tuned.
Here it is in a more organized way.
Little things I liked:
+ the ride is amazing and it corners well
+ Made in Japan. For now at least.
+ Gas mileage is like 4.5 l/100km on highway even with 18" rims. Even better with 16".
+ XSE trim has a high quality sound dampened thump to the door
+ Engine looks like an actual engine
+ Blue Flame color looks amazing in person
+ Seats are great, especially in the XSE
+ Direct shift CVT with the physical first gear feels like a good automatic
+ Material quality is almost Lexus-like
+ Full LED headlights look awesome
+ They actually covered metal body panels in the doors this time. Upscale.
+ All automatic windows.
+ Engine noise for what it is.
+ Dual injection is super cool
+ Apple CarPlay and smartwatch connectivity, standard WiFi
+ Engine immobilizer in the XSE
+ Adjustable armrest in the XSE
What I didn't like:
- no traffic sign recognition for Canada yet
- no hybrid or AWD powertrain for NA market, unlike in Europe or Japan
- no sunroof... yet. Another deal breaker :(
- fake exhaust
- not a huge fan of the front end, but it is objectively cool 😎
- pretty small trunk and rear seat space, but actually they are OK if you take the rear multi-link unit and the hatch competition into account. Can't wait to see your rear-facing seat test, Paul ^ ^
- have I mentioned no traffic sign recognition in Canada and no sunroof?
Hopefully you'll be able to test the car soon. I personally recommend to see that beautiful Blue Flame in person and to try both transmissions, as both are worth it. I hate CVT's but this felt totally different. As this is not really a CVT anymore, and shifts very fast. And many people also like the seemless manual, but let's face it... not when it comes to voting with their wallets. I think it's even not available on the XSE in Canada.

It's an Evenflo... very middle of the road in terms of sizing.
I own a 2018 and have not complaints since new 72,000+ has it does everything in a car i needed. Very roomy
I always felt the iM seemed kinda goofy with all of its sharp lines and lackluster performance. When I saw the Corolla Hatch info I was very intrigued. It looks to be a great overall package! You get what you pay for...
The iM design targeted mpg not acceleration and the handling has generally rated very highly. Obviously the new Corolla hatch has much more power and the gearing (In the manual) is designed to increase acceleration. They also put bigger tires on the top spec 2019 model to increase grip.
The iM I have is awesome! No problems at all and I drive about 30,000 km a year on it.
I’m on the market for a car and theres a 2018 Corolla IM for $17,000 and 4,000 miles on it, I actually was looking at a Scion IM for $14,000 but has more miles and it’s a 2014,” model, I definitely can’t afford a corolla hatchback at this time but is the IM a good car?
I currently drive a 2003 Toyota Camry LE but it’s about at the end of its life at 228,000 miles
As you'll see in the comments here, a lot of people love their iM. We found it to fall a bit flat over its promises of a sporty driving experience. But it will be a reliable, versatile hatch for you!

Im going to test drive one today, and also see if my clunky ass car seat will fit in the back seat, which I think my daughter is almost ready for a booster seat anyways but just to see how a front facing car seat fits in that little IM!

How reliable is the cvt transmission on the 2019?
Dunno for this model, but we had a Toyota w/CVT for many years with no trouble.

I just took one for a drive and I was pretty impressed with it. I didn't find fault with most of what the reviewer claimed. I was surprised at how tight and sporty it felt, as Toyotas are not generally known for that. They're more of a milquetoast brand, but I found this one to be more fun to drive than I thought. Maybe if I had it for a week I'd change my mind.
Your 2018 iM has the same license plate as in another channel's evaluation video.
And ironically the other review was a polar opposite. He loved the seats too..
Yeahh... I drive an '18 iM, and what a delight! Threw a nice exhaust on her.. Tints.. Yeah no turbo but it gets fantastic mileage, and a "sport mode" (lol) and the less fancy add-on's they try to cram in there the better I say! For cryin' out loud, I got mine used @ 14k mi for about $15k 2 years ago. I'm loving the fact it is NOT push to start ignition, as I've driven 2 VW golfs in the past 10+ years and been really disappointed when those sorts of 'basic things' just_ fail. (They all inevitably do!)
Like the windshield wiper motor just before I turned in my last leased VW... ($800).
My 1st car was an old Toyota. That being said,, I'll finish with 3 final words, being perhaps the most important factor in my decision to get that 'older' model.

This man is on crack... the IM was PHENOMINAL car.
I’m 5’10 and I had someone in the back who was 6’6 without issues. This car was sprung and cornered beautifully. And there were times my economy dropped below 5L/100km. I’m not pretending that happened often, but the economy was absolutely stellar.
The Corolla hatch was an upgrade for sure but the IM was a gem.
Can't wait for your Corolla Hatchback review, coz this is the car I've been targeting on....it's the whole package to me, yet without Android Auto is a bit disappointing.

As I still can't find a way to make living with an electric vehicle viable even here in GTA Ontario, I will have to go for a gasoline car. And since I need lumbar support, and cost of ownership of a used vehicle are close to having a new basic vehicle, I will probably put that pre-order for the new Corolla Hatch XSE as soon as I can. Despite having new technologies, it's still a Toyota, and also I really like it. Maybe not that much the exterior, but the car in general. And the current iM I just never consider, even though it's more appealing than the sedan.
I had 2008 Scion xD for 8 years(modded it of course) and it was made in Japan and I think that Scion/Toyota iM is built in Japan. The corollas are build in other places. I would pick iM as I believe the quality overall is better. Going to drive a used one today to see

@@FamilyWheels Correct, the test drive was good and I would say the iM handles a bit better that average compact car in its price range. It had more room inside than i thought. Overall this car is just a commuter. I own 2016 MINI COOPER S and driving experience is like comparing apples to oranges :). So if I would be in the market for a normal car, iM would be definitely on my list!
Scions were horrible cars there's a reason they've blocked all negetive comments across all media platforms.
I love my 2018 Corolla iM. It suits my needs perfectly. I hardly have passengers in my back seats, lots of storage space. Nice and compact with plenty of safety features.
Coming from a 2005 Dodge neon with absolutely no safety features, this car is a dream come true!
Wow that's crazy! My first car was a 04 neon. Totally unsafe, I crashed (brakes failed) and rear-ended an old MB SUV. Car was destroyed but no airbag deployed. Out of need I got a 08 BMW 328i, now looking to get out of it and this car is top in my list. Hopefully I can get one soon! Cheers.

At least 190hp and the screen to be tilted slightly towards the driver, like we see in the Mi

Makes it look more "premium" I have an e90 and when I bought it it came with 18s. I immediately swapped them with a 16 in wheel. The guy at the shop thought I was an idiot for getting smaller wheels, little does he know the car rides way better.

People rely on the suggestion from youtube and subscription notifications a lot. CZcams suggestions favor newer videos, and notifications ca be drowned in the morning. Since you usually only post one video per week, I would suggest posting on Thursday or Friday afternoon or evening, from 15:00 to 20:00 (youtube needs some time to index the video). I hope this helps, you deserve more views! One of the most honest auto reviewers I'd say.

The design of the IM is way better looks more sporty
Scion iM and Corolla iM....same price, the difference is paying for the CVT.
The new Corolla hatch while has all the new tech, new engine, and all new bells and whistles, it has smaller cargo room. And also I wouldn't buy a new model year with a new engine and new transmission until all the quirks are worked out, even though it's a Toyota.

justin94block yeah i would buy one two to three years later. Still that smaller cargo room and how it doesn't fold as flat as the previous model is a deal breaker for me.
I'm actually leasing the car right now and we just sent it in for recall for the transmission update on the ECU or something like that. It anyway it had issues shifting if you floored It stays at 4k rpm and like stays there and wouldn't accelerate. I use sport mode a lot and never had the issue. I thought it was just the CVT engine but I was right for feeling weird about it
I've owned a first year Dodge SRT4, first year Toyota X-Runner, first year FJ Cruiser and first year FR-S and had no issues other than 3rd gear grind with the X-Runner which was fixed under warranty. Modern cars are usually pretty well sorted once they hit the market. If not, you've got a warranty, and if it's really bad, lemon law.

I purchased an IM in June 2018 for roughly $18500 US, out the door and besides absolutely loving everything about it, I can't believe I got this much car for this price! Toyota even kicked in 25,000 miles of maintenance.
I find the car comfortable in my (sometimes) 100 miles per day commute and when you turn on sport mode, it is a blast to drive. For $4000 more for a base 2019 which includes four wheels and an engine, the darned thing looks like something Hyundai would build. Certainly not as quirky and unique looking as the IM.
They don’t advertise it at all. That’s the problem.
What's the main reason people buy Toyotas? Reliability. Personally, I'll take a naturally aspirated, made in Japan, Toyota with minimal electronic bullshit that's just gonna stop working in 10 years over some tiny, turbo charged, gdi engine thats not gonna last past 100k miles.

If I had a choice for iM customs, I’d get a manual and the car itself would be in Spring Green Metallic. I like the iM coz it’s so different from Run of the Mill hatch’s. It looks eons better and has standard features for less than base models of other cars.

This is probably the worst CZcams review this car has ever received. What kind of gasoline do you use? I only ask because you have also reported the worst mpg numbers since this car made its debut as a Scion.

You don't need to please everyone , I just thought you made this car sound like a complete lemon. For the record , I don't sell Toyotas for a living or own shares in TMC. If my 13 year old Toyota-built car is anything to go by, this iM will probably be on the road for about 100,000 miles longer than many of its fashionable, turbo-charged rivals. As for the 2019 Corolla hatch, it sounds like an incremental improvement but Canadians really deserve a Corolla wagon like they get in Europe not just another hatch.

A Corolla (Auris) wagon is already fantastic but it is being fantastic in Europe only. Toyota is SOOOOO close to figuring out that Canadians want one too. They kept the Canadian-built Matrix in Canada for an extra model year, then they gave the Kentucky-built Venza an extra year here after they stopped selling it in the US and now we have a 2018 Prius v even though 2017 was the last year in 'merica. Maybe one day........

a Toyota dull and uninspiring to drive...no way, say it isn't so...Toyota is pretty good at the "hype machine"; just look at the 5th gen Supra. The iM and Hatch are two great cars, or well they could have been, but Toyota stopped short on their development and execution and went about 80-85% of the way, leaving just enough of want and "forcing" buyers to look elsewhere in the showroom to satisfy the buyers' needs - oh look, a CH-R, a RAV4. I own a 2016 Scion version iM....Few things I dislike the ride is pretty bouncy...I would like to upgrade the Suspension set-up if I had a chance, the Side Mirror design is horrible cant see well, the backseat is a joke, the CVT Transmission is a joke too!...The Steering Feel feels too sloppy...Then that very odd White vinyl accent stripe that on the dash on the Passenger side is out of place...Overall its ok..I like the Aggressive Exterior look....I am really looking forward to the 2019 Corolla Hatchback now!

Wow i got the 16 scion tc...didnt really do enough research...insurance cost a lot...the door windows are thin ..it dont have a spin on oil filter...it only gets about 28 mpg highway. Looking back i might have got a scion im... Anyway the Tc sits in the driveway and i drive the ford focus. The focus gets 40mpg....Kind of afraid to drive the tc only 10k sold in 2016... Anyway the im looks like a great car...I dont see any sold very cheap...I would say never buy a first year car.. If you buy the last year of design should get a great price and will know the weak points of the car... I like toyota but got a salvage 2016 focus se 5 speed manual transmission for almost nothing..

I would wait for Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. Also the iM is far too slow. Even for non car people. That thing is far too slow and not enough power to overtake people.

It's a fucking commuter car. Nobody needs a fast car for a commuter. And funny thing is that people that complain never buy the cars new, they buy used which prompts automakers to stop making performance models.
