I loved it. Top of my king list. Was an epic read. I wish people would have recommended this to me earlier on. Definitely needs to be talked about more. Thanks Cam

Yeah, it is not super talked about, but yep, had a pen name and some of his darker works. This was such a good read, and hopefully soon, maybe a movie or show. Thanks Troy's

You said it was a Dystopian Future. I argue that the book is neither dystopian nor the future. Yes, some synopsis will say it occurs in the near future but the book is clearly dated in the 60s and 70s. That's because King wrote the book from 1966 to 1967 from age 18 to 19 as a freshman at the University of Maine. But we don't get read that book because he revised in the late 70s before it was published in 1979. We don't know how much he revised. He could have just rewrote the whole thing from scratch for all we know. There are references to things in the 70s so we know he revised it for example references to Ron Howard with a hardon (referencing his highschool character Richie Cunningham in the 70s sitcom Happy Days which was set in the 50s) and John Travolta who was unknown when he wrote it, but huge in the 70s with a role in King's Carrie as well as in the hit movie Saturday Night Fever and his role on the popular sitcom Welcome Back Kotter. Ron Howard was a small boy in 1966 and played Opie on The Andy Griffith Show. I don't think he was referring to 8 year old boy with a hardon. The story mentions a milkman which is a profession that vanished in the 70s so that's a left-over from the 60s. If you look up the definition of dystopian, you'll realize that the Long Walk doesn't match the definition. They boys volunteer. Only a handful pass the tests and their names go into a lottery. They pick 200. 100 are walkers, 100 are backups, any of which get two chances to backout on April 15 or April 31 (doesn't exist, one hint that its an alternate reality). They'd have to be forced into it for it to be a dystopian. But they volunteer for the physical and mental pain and suffering.

Dystopian in terms of this story wouldn't really be a version of earth that's in decay or disarray...more along the lines that this is a world that's turned to public contest with live televised deaths of young boys Dystopia. But that's the word I used cause to me it does meet those characteristics we associate with Dystopian. And future yes...based on the the guns and the few times we see tech. But really whose future. When I read this book none of it really screamed our earth. Similar but not the same.

You said things like they must stay at 4 mph and can't stop. Both are untrue. You can stop for 1 minute and 59 seconds, get 3 warnings, then walk 3 hours, and lose all your warnings, then repeat. In fact, that would be a good strategy. If I did The Long Walk, I'd take 1 minute and 45 seconds to rest and stretch, then walk off my warnings and repeat. There is no harm in walking faster than 4 mph. In fact, the boys probably maintain a speed slightly faster otherwise they might dip just under 4 mph. Nobody can walk at exactly 4 mph. Your speed is going to vary with every step. Better to be walking at like 4.2 mph so you can dip down to 4.1 without your timer counting down. Garraty stops to move his bowels. He stops to hold hands with Jan and mom. He stops when he gets a leg cramp. He stops to kiss the girl. Also remember, it's not how fast they walk, it's how fast they walk in the correct direction. If they go in the opposite direction at 6 mph, that's under 4 mph in the correct direction.

All very true and I meant stop as in once the walk started you could stop. Yes take breaks like they do in the book. But to stop is to die. All my reviews are done in a spoily way but also vague. I want people to read the book. I read all your comments and all the facts you took from the book and to just read your comments took me around 6 mins. If I went and added every detail, it would be a much longer review, and would be no point to read the book as I would disclose every little detail. I do go into long form discussion on certain books. Currently talking about his dark tower series. Just the first book, we spent alittle over 3 hours talking about the book and that was only a 178 page book. I don't use a script when I record. All that is from memory, so I do forget and honestly just forget to mention things I want to talk about. But in all honesty. It's a very loose review. The main point is trying to get people to read books.
But I really do thank you for all the details and things I just straight up missed. Loved everything you wrote. Personally somebody I'd really like to have come by and talk during my lives where I do go into greater detail. My next live is in 2 weeks. Thank you so much Pat Coston

You said they get a warning when they fall below 4 mph, then a warning every 30 seconds after that. You also said after the 3rd warning, they gave 30 seconds before they get their ticket. The math doesn't add up. They each have a 120 second timer (2 minutes). This is a fact established at the start. Olson tells the story of a boy who froze at the start and got his tickets two minutes later. In your definition, they get warning 1 with 119.9 seconds on their timer then warning 2 thirty second later at 89.9 then warning 3 thirty seconds later at 59.9 which means they have 59.9 seconds to get their ticket. The way it works is that when their speed in the correct direction falls under 4 mph, their 2-minute timer counts down. They get warnings at 90, 60, 30 and a ticket at 0. If an hour passes without a warning, they lose a warning, which means their timer gets reset to 60, 90 or 120 depending if they have 3, 2 or 1 warnings respectively. Notice I mentioned correct direction. Everyone fails to mention the correct direction is following the road in the direction the halftracks move following the center line. If you're walking straight at the edge of the road, your speed is 0 in the correct direction. If you walk 4 mph in the wrong direction, your speed is -4 mph in the correct direction.

I know they laid out the exact timer on how long the had between. And as I remember it. right after Olson tells the story about the boy. I remember barkovitch showing us in the beginning about the timer claiming to be apart of "the plan". No the directions. I don't know if I caught that. Like if that started walking backwards in the wrong direction they would have been clocked at -4 mph. I can remember parts where a boy ran sideways into the crowd or woods but don't remember if the timer started right when they turned. Really thank you pat for all your insights

You said the winner is the one that walks the longest. That's not technically true. Better to say the winner is the last one alive. You can sit down and still win. Let's say there are two walkers left. Walker A has no warnings and Walker B has 3 warnings. At the same instant, Walker A stops walking and Walker B falls under 4 mph in the correct direction but keeps walking. In 30 seconds, Walker A gets his first warning and Walker B gets his ticket even though he's walking and the other guy isn't. Walker A won even though he wasn't the last one walking.

That is true. And I could totally see a walk that ended just way. Thanks Pat
