A lot of people found this change weird but I found it super interesting. Perhaps Luz interprets her moms words in a different way in which they were said in reality.
I believe that the first is her moms view of what happened and the altered one is luz's interpretation. She probably interperted her moms words that way because she most likely doesn't want to leave the boiling isles
I know that other people have talked about how this is Luz misremembering it but, can we appreciate that the team used the hiatus to allow the change in the flashback to slip under the radar for a lot of people the first time though? Using a meta element (the hiatus) so simulate an in world effect (Luz's imperfect memory of the situation).
Luz is really torn. Choose the world she was born into, or choose the world that accepted her and needs her? The Earth or The Boiling Isles? *UPDATE: She chose both. She gets the best of both worlds.*
People forget that our minds aren't recording devices. Our memories aren't always exact recollections of what happened, they can be warped due to our perceptions, emotions, and interpretations. The second clip wasn't what Carmilla said, and it's probably not even what she meant, but due to Luz's fears and insecurities, it is what she heard.
Luz probably hears "promise you'll stay here" and misinterpreted that as STAYING on Earth forever, think that once she's back home, she HAVE to stay with her mom and can't ever go back to the Boiling Isles again. But can't she just be able to go back and forth freely once she figured out how to make a portal door, like how Eda used it?
It probably has to do with Camila immediately berating her for "living out a witch fantasy" when she heard that Luz chose to stay on the Isles. Like Camila isn't a bad mom but she tends to be harsh around the idea of Luz not living how Camila wants her to.
Yeah I can actually imagine that her mother would feel like she OWES Eda for taking care of her daughter in that world. Ergo would be all, you can visit them just make sure to come home too.
Oh definitely the show has in my opinion hinted before that Luz misinterprets a lot of things when there not super clarified like obviously Luz misinterpreted a lot of what Camila said in the first episode as well as do to either the way Camila explained reality check summer camp or the way the camp is presented in it's pamphlet Luz has a false understanding of what camp intends for her as well as it giving her another false sense of what her mom thinks of her. In the Boiling isles most misinterpretations that Luz has is largely do to many characters forgetting that Luz didn't grow up there and thusly doesn't innately understand or know what a lot of what most people consider common knowledge which by the way I think most people would find themselves in a lot of similar misunderstandings when not giving the proper information like Luz.
You can interpret meanings behind words - it doesn't have to be literally said, just thought about. Luz may just be thinking that Mrs. Noceda never wants Luz to go back because that's what she thinks the promise means. Essentially Luz may just be thinking the worst outcome when that isn't the case.
Luz seems to consider the worst outcome when dealing with her mom far more than with anyone or anything else which is to be expected when it's a parent but I believe Luz may have had interpretation issues with her mom for a while especially given how clearly has trouble truly understanding Luz's perspective if she had she would've been sure about Luz's veiw on the summer camp is given that Luz's perspective on how bad and what's intended to come of the summer camp was different from what Camila ment.
I feel like the part of Dana not having a happy ending would lie in the fact that Luz wouldn't go back to stay with her mother full time or if ever. The fact that they introduced the basilisks and Vee and how Vee took Luz's place made me think about how Luz could just stay in the Boiling Isles for the rest of her life or more. Let's think for a second about if a portal door wasn't able to be recreated after something with the Day of Unity being foiled and or reversed possibly. If there is no way between the worlds, Luz might be stuck in the BI forever, but Camila would be able to have Vee as a daughter. It would be painful for Camila to loose her birth daughter but she could find beauty in darkness, where the light in said darkness would be Vee. Vee didn't have a family, and had experienced cruelty most of her life... Camila taking her in, even when she was unaware of her true identity was some of the only kindness that she has experienced thus far. Even after the events of Yesterday's Lie I'm sure Camila has still remained nurturing, and kind to Vee, if not more after learning her backstory behind the scenes/ off screen possibly. Since there is magic in the show that implies leaks between the worlds, what if they used that power (Titan's Blood or something else new we haven't seen yet maybe) to make a communication link between the two worlds, if not ever actual doorways between... What I mean to say is that the not so happy ending could be either way, where Luz never really does go back (which would be sad since she has to leave all of her found family and friends behind) or where Luz never goes back to her origin world for whatever reason. I would feel bad for either clause that the show might end up going with, but it is fascinating to think about from these clips and perspectives.
Not sure if anyone said this before, but in the flashback Luz still says "It's not you it never was" which is out of place with what her mom says in the flashback. Thats what signaled to me that Luz was remembering wrong
Another aspect of this is probably Luz's anxiety about the situation mixed with ADHD (which the writers stated she has) Which, yeah, is gonna mess with how you remember things.
Honestly? Her being ADHD definetly plays a role here (I mean, it’s a part of who she is), but in another way as well. Adhders tend to take phrases in different ways. For example, “what if you tried doing it this way?” Could be seen as “you’re stupid for doing it the wrong way”. Or even a simple “maybe” is seen as “no”. Camila talking to her about “fixing” things when Luz gets home could have easily been taken as “you have to stay here”.
I have personally viewed the scene change as what Luz's mother said in Yesterday's Lie and Follies at the Covenday Parade as one and the same. Both scenes shows Luz's mother never wanting to go back to the Boiling Isles. In her Mother's perspective as caring but from Luz's perspective demanding, a desperate plea for her daughters save return and never to go back to a potential dangerous land. Both scenarios show Luz saying why she ran away was never because of her mother but before she can finish the mother says please. I think instead of showing Luz as a "A Narrator with misleading memories" but a narrator with herself a desperate plea of help. We even saw Luz's mother didn't take Luz seriously that Magic and Demons are real until reality struck her in the face. Perhaps, Luz has seen various magical things over the years and nobody believed her hence she left with Eda the way she did.
What Camila says in the two versions is obviously *not* meant to be one and the same. If that were the case, it wouldn't make any sense to write and record new lines for Camila instead of reusing the original footage. Additionally, Luz's unaltered lines wouldn't mismatch with her mother's new dialogue if the intent was for Camila to basically say the same thing (notice how Luz still says her "Mom, it's not you" line in the flashback even though Camila doesn't mention thinking that she pushed Luz away or anything of the sort in that version of the scene, making it so that Luz's side of the conversation no longer makes sense). The *only* reason to make what Camila says in the flashback different from her lines in the actual original scene and to add her asking Luz to never go back to the Boiling Isles is to highlight that she *didn't* say that at all and to show that Luz is *misinterpreting* what her mother said. The fact that Luz's lines don't make sense with what Camila says in the flashback is further evidence that her memory and understanding of what her mom asked is incorrect. If Luz's interpretation of what Camila said was supposed to be correct and the flashback was just supposed to highlight how she took it, then that could have been accomplished with her narrating or giving an inner monologue over the flashback or even by having Camila say the exact same words in a different tone of voice (Luz would *still* be misremembering if they went with that last option though). The flashback being incorrect is also the only way the scene's inclusion in "Follies at the Coven Day Parade" has a purpose that avoids redundancy when watching/rewatching the show without a hiatus in between the two episodes, as there is otherwise little to no reason for a flashback to something that happened in the previous episode when marathoning or binge watching if it was just going to show the exact same thing that the audience just saw, *especially* when the show avoids doing flashbacks that just replay footage from previous episodes even when summarizing, recounting, or otherwise recalling or mentioning the events of previous episodes.
Nobody sane would take talk about magic and demons seriously, especially coming from a child who was known to make stuff like this up for fun all the time like Luz did. And Camilla was actually happy about it because she thought Luz had lost her creative spirit in camp, so she *wanted* to believe that Luz was speaking from imagination again because she missed her doing that, so of course she would take a while to realize Luz was actually serious this time around. This is Luz misinterpreting her parting words because she feels guilty about leaving her mom and thinks never going back to the Boiling Isles is what she would want from her when that’s not actually what she said. Camilla‘s concern is not disapproval with the Boiling Isles themselves, it’s that Luz essentially ran away because she wasn’t an attentive parent to her which she wants to change so Luz can stay with her and be happy. Camilla doesn’t know about Amity and the others yet, so she didn’t know that asking Luz to stay with her would give her this sort of dilemma that overshadows her actual intentions. I agree that Camilla and Luz came out of this scene thinking different things, but I‘m sure it IS because Luz is unreliable, as hers is a flashback while the version we saw before actually happened in the episode.
Weird that I didn't notice any difference at all when I was watching the flashback. I, also, thought the original scene had the exact same meaning behind Camilla's words - I want to KEEP you with me. But upon rewatch the message is much clearer: while Luz understood her mother's words that way, what Camilla actually meant was quite different - I don't want to LOSE you.
I like how they have a version of what Luz think her mom said. It's actually different from what she thinks. Her mom knows she was wrong she admitted she is wrong and she don't wanna loose her but that doesn't mean she wanna have Luz to stay with her forever.
So maybe the while thing will pan out to be another miscommunication due to emotions running high and poor wording (because that's never happened before) where she just wanted Luz to live in the human realm, but not completely restrict her from going to the Boiling Isles. If Luz likes it there so much that she chose to stay there of her own will, then Camilla would probably understand that telling her to never go back would only make things worse.
It's not really that weird in yesterday's lie we see the event from Luz's experience while in follies at coven day parade we see the event from her memory. It's pretty normal for human especially teens to misinterpreted the words someone said to them. Just like when my father said "I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed" i hear "I'm so furious, you're not my son anymore"
This is such an accurate depiction of how teenagers think. Sometimes they don’t see the whole picture. Luz’s mom never said that Luz could only chose either Earth or the Boiling Isles, but Luz saw it that way.
I didn’t even know that but thanks for pointing out… tbh I can relate to this… sometimes when someone tells you something you interpret it in a different way especially if your having a moment like how Luz had
I think this is another brilliant way of showing the audience how Luz misinterpreting what Camila said is effecting her memory of the event I bet it might be a similar case to some of Luz's previous interactions with Camila at the start of the series as clearly Luz misinterpreted what her mom was trying to get across to her plus it wasn't helped by the fact that Luz had already formed a view on what the summer camp was like and what it was ment to do which in turn gave Luz a false understanding of what her mom thinks of her hence another reason why she was incredibly disappointed looking while waiting for the bus to camp.
I think this Means that Luz interpreted her mom's words differently. Maybe towards the end she will think she'll have to stay in one or the other but she won't?
This hits even harder after the newest episode. Imagine what that poor woman must've felt watching a ghostly apparition of her missing daughter floating up and vanishing into the sky after losing her husband aswell
Watching this scene after Reaching Out makes it so much more emotional and makes camila’s emotion make so much more sense, not only is her husband gone but her only child is stuck in a different world and currently has no way to get home
I love how the first one was in Lus’s mom’s perspective and the second one was in Lus perspective Side note: the one that is in Lus perspective dose indeed have some changes, like how they emphasize more on the fact that she didn’t want to leave the demon realm based on her mom’s worlds. It also brought up the fact that Lus had some emotional baggage when it came to that flashback, like how she never told amity until amity brung it up,and she didn’t tell her friends at least not that I know of.
This realy show how much of an affect that words can have we are seing luz's memory which is affected by both emotion and her stress at the thought of having to chose
alot of people are talking about it being Luz misremembering it, but I think it might just be how she interpreted it. like even though her mom said what it was in the first clip, I believe the second clip is how Luz interpreted it. Kind of like when your parent says "you can't go to go hang out with your friends." you might interpret that as "oh well she just doesn't like my friends and she doesn't want me to have friends, etc."
I think Luz felt like that her mom didn't really mean the apology and that's why she left it out. i do this sometimes as wel if i feel that way. she may also not remember the full thing. but i feel like if something really bothers you, you're gonna be thinking abt it alot. so i feel like you'd remember at least alot of it. also, i felt like the way Luz's mom (dont remember her name lol) whas trying to make her promise she would Stay with her whas just a manipulation. ive seen some manipulative people in my life and that whas deff manipulation even if she didn't realise it.
A lot of people are saying how it's showcasing Luz's emotions on the matter of choosing between the realms, but I think it may also serve as foreshadowing
I knew there was something off about that dialogue! I thought they did it to make a quick flashback but it still sounded weird to be shortened like that
Honestly it's actually a neat summary of the situation. Idk whether this is a neurodivergent thing, but my midterm memory is weird. I don't remember everything, but a summary of the whole situation. Once it's in longterm I remember everything the way it was. Guess I need longer to process, but my point is that this isn't exactly an interpretation..it's a summary of her mom's whole reaction and statements
She just understand, that being back in human realm means she can't come back to demon realm, especially if Belos is still there. It's too dangerous to have a portal, and switch worlds while he's the Emperor. Like, she's like Edalyn now, hated and wanted by Emperor. Camilla can get hurt if he will know who's her mother is.
I feel like once Mrs. Noceda hears the whole story, without any problems with time constraints or something big happening, I’m sure she’ll let her visit the demon realm if it’s possible
That's the point of the video, Camila never said "Please never go back", that's what Luz undertood, she actually said "Please don't run away again", she never said she can't visit the demon realm, she just said that they will stay together.
That could be a reason but it would have cost money to reanimate this scene with new dialogue and have Camila's VA record new lines when it would have been simpler to keep the scene the same and make a cut somewhere else. I think this serves a purpose story wise.
@@qiralyncassette most shows, whenever doing a flashback or so qnd they need to shorten it, will redub the line. Especially shows that air the episode right afterwards if it ends in a cliff hanger. For example, adventure time had Jake leaving at the end of an episode suddenly, and the next episode had the same scene, but with changed dialogue from before. Shows do it like this to give the basic information out to people who didn't see the other episode, or to fix over a joke or something. Heck, this even happens between commercial breaks sometimes in 22 minute shows.
Honestly looking at them, they're not too different from each other. It's easy to see how Luz would hear "Never go back to the Boiling Isles." Even though that's not EXACTLY what she said.
I found it interesting when I first realised the two were different, it shows how Luz has ‘demonised’ her memory of that night and also gives more reason for her initial fear and attempt to “prove that you can get the best of two worlds” in that episode.
They probably retconned Yesterday's Lie dialogue and replaced it with the newer one, as a way of making a clearer depiction of what stakes the choice Luz has to make is going to have.
Luz obviously interpreted her mother’s words differently than how they were said. Her mother was just trying to get her daughter back while Luz was filled with this fear that she would never return to everyone she loved. She probably thinks once she goes back she’ll never see any of them again
First comment i see Is what I what's going to talk about. I think this is how we were as the watcher should think, when in the Coven Day Parade episode is how luz thinks of what her mom said.
[IF How Should Have Ended sees this] A. Luz: Oh mom, why not just you come with me for adventure? Mom: What? But- Luz: In here, there is no paperworks. Mom: .....AWOOOOOOOOO, I'M COMING TO YOUR PLACE!!!!!!!! Vee: Wa de heck? B. Luz: You know what? I'll just come every holiday. Mom: What? But- Luz: I'll let Vee by my representative. Vee: Wa de heck? LUZ: ENJOY BEING ME VEEEEEEE!!!!! I'LL BE BACK MOOOOOOM!!!!! HAVE FUN BABYSITTING YOUR OTHER CHILD AS A RANSOM FOR MY LIKELYHOOOOOODDD!!!!! AWOOOOOOO!!!!!!! Vee & Mom: ........ Vee: Seriously, wa de heck?! C. Luz: ......you know what? I'll promise to make our world together. Mom: What? But- LUZ: THAT WAY THESE 2 UNIVERSE COLIIIIIIIIDDDDEEEE!!!!!! Narrator: And after alot of mastery of magic & multiuniverse traveling to search of a way, Luz stumble upon Star & Marco place around xxsomething blah....and so her 2 worlds become 1. LUZ: YAAAAYYYY!!!!! NOW WE CAN BE TOGETHEEEEERR!!!!!! Mom: ......I'm already old. D. Luz: I guess there's no other choice then *drags everyone Luz cares* So, I'm thinking we're moving to mom's place? VEE & KING: WA DE HECK? Mom: What? But- Lilith: I can make a house larger. Mom: .....sigh, if you say so. Then, you should be homeschool from now on. LUZ: YAY!!!! Eda: Wa de heck?!
This was honestly really smart. It’s honestly pretty easy to see how Luz could have interpreted her mom’s words differently: “When you *come back*, I promise things will be different” . To a large amount of the audience, this sounded like Camila just wanting to see her daughter and to fix whatever she did wrong. To Luz, it sounded like her mom didn’t want to to go back to the Boiling Isles. Honestly? I didn’t even notice a difference between the scenes until someone pointed it out, because I heard the same thing that Luz did.
Luz's side can't be the only side we see. Remember, her mother is heartbroken that her only daughter is gone and trapped in the Demon world. She doesn't know what's happening to Luz in the Demon world, and I'm sure that's what scares her the most.

If Luz likes it there so much that she chose to stay there of her own will, then Camilla would probably understand that telling her to never go back would only make things worse.
I hope this was done on purpose, cause that's a really cool detail.
Honestly, I don't see how it couldn't have been. If you already have the original footage, there's no reason to go back and record a different take.
If an animated show draws attention to a specific scene or person or object it is planned and is important gravity falls taught me that
It's very interesting how luz interpreted her mom's words.
How did I not notice this? This show has so much detail packed into it!
This is such an accurate depiction of how teenagers think. Sometimes they don’t see the whole picture. Luz’s mom never said that Luz could only chose either Earth or the Boiling Isles, but Luz saw it that way.
This makes sense as it's her memory.
I believe that Camilla wanted to know that Luz was going not that she never wanted her to go back
I love how the first one was in Lus’s mom’s perspective and the second one was in Lus perspective
Side note: the one that is in Lus perspective dose indeed have some changes, like how they emphasize more on the fact that she didn’t want to leave the demon realm based on her mom’s worlds. It also brought up the fact that Lus had some emotional baggage when it came to that flashback, like how she never told amity until amity brung it up,and she didn’t tell her friends at least not that I know of.
I thought it sounded different! Thanks for this!
She just said stay with me, she never said in the human realm
Luz: We´re in problems
I think the change was because the scene was seen in luz's perspective
it explains why she was nervous to explain it to everyone
This realy show how much of an affect that words can have we are seing luz's memory which is affected by both emotion and her stress at the thought of having to chose
i was waiting for this video
wait no because that's kinda genius, I don't think I've seen a character misremember a flashback and shit like this before
alot of people are talking about it being Luz misremembering it, but I think it might just be how she interpreted it. like even though her mom said what it was in the first clip, I believe the second clip is how Luz interpreted it. Kind of like when your parent says "you can't go to go hang out with your friends." you might interpret that as "oh well she just doesn't like my friends and she doesn't want me to have friends, etc."
It’s cool to see that “words that are said aren’t always the words that are heard” scenario in any show done well, let alone a Disney Channel show
I think Luz felt like that her mom didn't really mean the apology and that's why she left it out. i do this sometimes as wel if i feel that way. she may also not remember the full thing. but i feel like if something really bothers you, you're gonna be thinking abt it alot. so i feel like you'd remember at least alot of it. also, i felt like the way Luz's mom (dont remember her name lol) whas trying to make her promise she would Stay with her whas just a manipulation. ive seen some manipulative people in my life and that whas deff manipulation even if she didn't realise it.
I like how 11 also kind of serves as a referesher considering how long it's been since 10 aired XD
THIS IS ME EXAGGERATING THE THINGS MY MOM SAYS TO ME LMAOOOO
I always figured it was a “What Camilla said vs what Luz heard” situation
WOAH GOOD EYE DUDE, THANKS SO MUCH!
A lot of people are saying how it's showcasing Luz's emotions on the matter of choosing between the realms, but I think it may also serve as foreshadowing
I feel like this is how every child kind of sees there and hears their mother's words and tried to change things up a bit to make more sense
Megatron "Camila Noceda, I swear I'll get you for this! (Rage Eyes)
OUCH RIGHT IN THE HEART
Luz's mom really tried to sympathize with her she had genuinely thought she had pushed her away.
I think because they did not have the right Clip so they changed it or maybe that was what Luz remembered
I knew there was something off about that dialogue! I thought they did it to make a quick flashback but it still sounded weird to be shortened like that
This is actually really sad.
I didn't even realise they changed it! I did think her mom's words were a little harsher than I remembered but wow
oh my god that was actually a stroke of genius
Dam I did not even notice. Thanks for pointing it out.
Aw man....
I think they changed the lines is because in follies that was Luz’s perspective of what her mom meant
I see it as the animators couldn't put the whole clip in and needed the extra few seconds for the episode, so they shortened it.
nah pretty sure that was on purpose or there would have been a cut
This is like official anime dubs vs fan dubs
very impressif
Honestly looking at them, they're not too different from each other. It's easy to see how Luz would hear "Never go back to the Boiling Isles." Even though that's not EXACTLY what she said.
I found it interesting when I first realised the two were different, it shows how Luz has ‘demonised’ her memory of that night and also gives more reason for her initial fear and attempt to “prove that you can get the best of two worlds” in that episode.
I think its just Luz or that is what she heard
This hurts my soul
They probably retconned Yesterday's Lie dialogue and replaced it with the newer one, as a way of making a clearer depiction of what stakes the choice Luz has to make is going to have.
I thought I was halluzinating
Even if she’ll stay on Earth, she’ll lose everything she loves on The Boiling Isles. Her newfound family, her friends and her girlfriend.
I thought something was off about that scene I just couldn’t quite place it
I just thought it was a continuity error.
I FUCKING KNEW IT WAS DIFFERENT!!
Knowing this I wish the change didn’t happen ……. mostly because it wouldn’t give Luz a choice
Luz obviously interpreted her mother’s words differently than how they were said. Her mother was just trying to get her daughter back while Luz was filled with this fear that she would never return to everyone she loved. She probably thinks once she goes back she’ll never see any of them again
pls update but this time the Collector's rhymes
Well her mother never said to her she wont go there ever again. Meaning there is only a missunderstanding
I hate it when that always happens
First comment i see
Is what I what's going to talk about. I think this is how we were as the watcher should think, when in the Coven Day Parade episode is how luz thinks of what her mom said.
I knew it sounded different
[IF How Should Have Ended sees this]
A. Luz: Oh mom, why not just you come with me for adventure?
Mom: What? But-
Luz: In here, there is no paperworks.
Mom: .....AWOOOOOOOOO, I'M COMING TO YOUR PLACE!!!!!!!!
Vee: Wa de heck?
B. Luz: You know what? I'll just come every holiday.
Mom: What? But-
Luz: I'll let Vee by my representative.
Mom: What? But-
LUZ: THAT WAY THESE 2 UNIVERSE COLIIIIIIIIDDDDEEEE!!!!!!
Mom: What? But-
Lilith: I can make a house larger.
Mom: .....sigh, if you say so. Then, you should be homeschool from now on.
LUZ: YAY!!!!
Eda: Wa de heck?!
Didn't actually notice that
my mom wouldve just beaten the sheet out of me
How is everyone getting the new episodes? I updated Disney plus and all but it’s still not working
Honestly? I didn’t even notice a difference between the scenes until someone pointed it out, because I heard the same thing that Luz did.
wow that is smort...
maybe Luz remembers it wrong
its like in stebenn universe its not what she actully said it just how it fells like
Yeah... 27 seconds I'm not getting back.
Luz's side can't be the only side we see. Remember, her mother is heartbroken that her only daughter is gone and trapped in the Demon world. She doesn't know what's happening to Luz in the Demon world, and I'm sure that's what scares her the most.
Damn both of these interpretation kinda put me down after today's episode
This could be a problem in the future because if she change somewords...how much was going to be truth if again show flashbacks of luz
can someone please tell me where i can watch this i don’t have a tv only internet
Perhaps it's Luz subconcious misinterpreting her Mom's message
