  • In this short video series we are going to talk about the different chickens breeds that we raise at KC Farms. Chickens have always been known as the gateway animals to homesteading. They are super efficient animals and serve so many great purposes on the farm.
    In this video we talk about our Bielefelder Chickens. This is the newest breed we have on our farm. They are a large dual purpose breed that are good for eggs and meat. Our birds are 17 weeks old and are already the size of our year and a half old welsummers. They a docile breed that are not skiddish when we come into the pen.

    I have been raising these chickens for a couple years and love them. They are clod and heat tolerant here in Middle Tennessee. We free range ours. Vary their diet with with worms and grit, and dust for bathing.

    Those roosters are gorgeous! I've fallen in love with the Speckled Sussex breed, they're supposed to be docil as well and so far the hens are very docile. I've got 6 Sussex roosters that are coming of age to breed ....got to get rid of some once I determine which of them I will keep. I am trying a new breed to me which is the Russian Spangled Orlov. These girls have been a treat! They gallop like horses when the run and they run often as they play in the tall grass. I've never seen chickens play but these do. It's hilarious to watch them. They snake their heads from side to side when they play hide and seek. They also are known to be docile and so far they are. I have to keep from stepping on them as I feed them. As to their value for eggs I have yet to see, they mature more slowly into egg laying as the Bielefelders do.

The cuckoo Marans is a paranoid nut job, so hopefully her eggs make up for her crazy 🤣 and maybe laying will make her mellow out a little like it has with my other lady.

    I personally like the Rhode Island Reds. I have 7 of them. Since I handle them a lot when they were babies, they are really docile just like your chickens. Only thing is the rooster is still very aggressive. He’s going in a pot when he starts crowing as I am not allowed to have one in town.

    Believe it or not, these chicks were some of the last chicks that Murray MacMurray had left on the last week of sales.
    I guess folks dont want to feed them.

      Hey Tom good question. We have 21 females one of them is broody So she isn’t laying at the moment. Out of the the 20 hens yesterday we had 13 eggs and today we had 15 so I am very impressed with them. I would guess you would get 7-10 a day once they start laying a full speed:) ours just started laying so I don’t feel they are at peak production yet. We love them can’t wait to start hatching out more. And the males haven’t attacked us yet!!

    Someone dropped a bielefelder rooster at my horse's pasture about a month ago. This is my first time caring for chickens. He's the only one. He makes interesting noises. One being a very loud MOO---wah. MOO---wah MOO----wah sound. Hollering that for a couple minutes Wednesday mid-afternoon. He was out of my view when he did that. Have you heard yours do that? Do you know what their reason for making that sound is? Just curious. Mine is very skittish but I imagine it's because he was just dumped at an unfamiliar place without his buddies. He crowed a lot the first day or 2. Now, not so much. My horses and I love having him around. I just feel bad for him not having his hens or buddies. He seems to find plenty to eat but I got some chicken scratch after 3 days for him also. Thanks in advance. Great video. Thank you for the information.

    • @KCFarms
      @KCFarms  Před 3 lety +1

      I have never heard that sound from ours. Ours are a little hard to catch and always try to move away from us if we try to catch them but they have never attacked us like other roosters we have owned. So as far as skittish that sounds kind of normal. They seem to forage very well at our place so I’m sure he will find plenty to pick through as long as he can find access to fresh water he should be good. You can always throw out fruit and veggie scraps as well that he can pick at. We appreciate you following along hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions

      @@KCFarms thank you so much. I have a year round spring fed creek my horses drink from so he has been. I spent 2 hours during the night trying to google that sound. It is possible of could have been something else in the woods but in the 5.5 years I've been there I've never heard this before. I sounded like his voice if that makes sense. Same loudness as his crowing. It's going to drive me crazy until I figure it out. I wish I'd thought to record the sound bit think I was actually riding a horse and just assumed it was one of his noises. Lol. Oh well. Thank you so much for taking time to respond. I am following you y'all now. Oh. I didn't mention, I don't live where my horses are ( or the rooster). I rent that pasture/land so Im not there most of the time.
