  • Welcome back to KC Farms! In this video we talk about the best dual purpose chicken, the Bielefelder. This is the first time we have had this breed and we are in love with them. I one Bielefelder chick I’m growing out.
I was offered a Roo. I absolutely love the breed too. This will always be what I add into my flock. I love the Black Star as well

Asian black chickens are awesome as well. I think they are similar to the black stars but I'm not sure. They lay large brown eggs and make good meat chickens too. My rooster I had was very predator aware and didn't die from predators. He was very muscular too. I had a very beefy California Tan (I think production red/white leg horn mix) and he was a funny boy and got along great with other males and hens.

FYI, they are NOT a German breed. They were developed by a German farm, but they used all American chickens except for the Amrocks. But the Amrock was also developed from the American Plymouth Rock. So, as far as I'm concerned they are an American breed. Thanks for the vid.

Thanks for all the info, thinking about getting some Bielefelders come springtime, I've had almost exclusively Buff Orpingtons for near 30 years, had a 14 pound roo a couple years ago. These Bielefelders are really getting my interest, the autosexing would be really handy, I generally hatch 40 to 100 eggs a month. BTW, a cheap digital luggage scale and a basket are very handy, and the scale is good for fishing too

When I hear someone say "the best dual purpose chicken" I want to here from personal experience, not from what someone has heard. Weight doesn't mean anything if they are past their butchering age. I'm going to go with the American Bresse because I have heard they are excellent meat birds and fill out quickly.

We raise these on the homestead. We do not like to eat Cornish Cross or raise them due to breaking legs and lung issues even if you call them at 8 weeks you have to deal broken bones and them not breathing. The Bielefelders have none of that and they taste as good as a Cornish cross you can eat their skin off the barbecue
