I posted on Facebook for grains and a lady from PEI sent me some frozen grains in milk in the mail. I live in N.B. She even paid the postage. Her only stipulation was that I pay it forward.
For those of you on keto or carnivore diets, letting the kefir separate into curds and whey uses up more of the lactose in the milk, creating an even lower carb product. Also B vitamins increase the longer the kefir sits.
Thank you!
Good point...respect from Baltimore
B vits are abundant in meat!
Thanks for sharing. 👍🙂
@@YeshuaKingMessiahyes and in kefir s well
I was making and drinking homemade kefir (I used coconut milk) for about a year and then I accidentally ate some dairy with lactose and I had no problems!!!! So I think the Kiefer actually healed my gut enough that I could then start tolerating lactose! Boy have I been enjoying cheese! I do eat primarily grass-fed milk cheese, eliminating as many omega-6 as I can! Thanks again for all you teach this community!
I bought some Nancy’s organic kefir and this particular batch had thickened more than typical commercial drink kefirs. I had to cut open the carton and scoop it out. It was like THE MOST HEAVENLY SOUR CREAM! I can’t wait to make thick kefir at home. Thank you.
Oh, Adrienna, thanks so much! I've been searching for ways to make thicker Kefir. As always, you've offered the best and clearest demonstration and the most detailed background information. You're a gem! Thanks!
I put the whey in my fermented foods as a starter culture to help activate the process of fermentation. Whey is very versatile. Today I'm making pickles. Also i dry the avocado seeds, peel them, cut them up in slices, and crush into p😮owder. I put the crushed avocado seeds into my smoothies and yogurt. The seeds have a lot of nutrients
I am in fact blown-a-WHEY by those health benefits! What a well done video, so detailed and easy to follow. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge in a intelligent and complete way. You are also so pleasant to listen to😊
You can boil down the whey to evaporate the liquid until it becomes a dark caramel delicasy the consistency of Nutella. Called brunost or getost.
Then what do you do with it?
@@lizh6192 spread or slice it onto toast.
Whey is way too precious to cook down
So many things to do with it!
And kill all of the goodness? Why?
No whey!
Great video & awesome info! TY!💓
I always enjoy your videos - this one is great and something I can really use. Thank you!
If you knew how grateful I am to you and the information you share! Kefir has been and is healing my body in such a way ❤

Thank you 🌹
I all ways enjoy your vids, I love your presentation style and great information, thank you
Excellent video thanks for sharing.
Fantastic information. Thank you. Great channel. ❤
This is so informative video and full of valuable experience. Thank you.
Thank you for this incredible video!!! Can’t wait to try this! ❤
Kefir is so easy to make and so delicious!!! Thanks for the tips on getting a thicker version.
The way I thicken my kefir is after I ferment my kefir after 24 hours and I strain it I add a little bit of whipping cream to my Kiefer, and that seconds it because then my whipping cream becomes fermented, and it thickens my kefir, which is by the way delicious.
Lol, Well I guess sick thick Kiefer is better than no keeper at all!
@@joycreated Oops! it should have read thicken not sicken.sometimes when I dictate into the microphone it doesn’t type the correct words. Happens to me all the time🤷🏼♀️
This looks wonderful!
Very useful video, thanks!!
Beautiful video. I can't wait to try some!
Thanks so much!❤
Wow, Miss Muffett knew what she eating was good.😋😋😋

thank you. i cannot wait to make kefir and then use the whey in other things. i have tried quite a few of your recipes and have recommended your channel to many of my friends, so keep up the great ideas for good food and living. it is good to see a channel like yours instead of all the crap on utube.
Wonderful video 😊
Thanks ❤
Thanks !
You look so healthy!😊
❤❤❤😊😊😊Thank you so much
Great information. Thankyou very much. I am awaiting delivery of fresh grains in the post. Your videos are invaluable. Adrienna, just as an aside, I have found a great use for my fermented vegetables other than on salads etc.. I have discovered Kimbap/Gimbap, and the fermented vege's are fantastic included in the roll up of these tasty slices. I can pack so many in!. Perhaps you make them too. I discovered Kimbap after watching Attorney Woo on Netflix who only ate only these! Totally delicious.
I Love your Videos!! Can you do a video on Nut and Seed fermentation?
I just made my first batch of kefir and over Fermented and thanks to your master-class video learned that, that's what happened. This video has helped me decide how to deal with the situation haha. Thank you so much and wow about they whey benefits 😮
Fantastic!
Mulțumesc mult
Yay love kefir
Thank you for the suggestions for using the whey!! I have always just thrown it into my compost/garden because I tried it once and didn’t like the flavor and so didn’t know what to do with it. Also there’s always so much I get overwhelmed trying to figure out what to do with it.
I’m going to taste it again and then use it in dressings to see if I like it.
Oh my goodness, you are THE BEST teacher Adrienna! You think of everything and answer all my questions. Here's one: what is the broad spatula you are using to hold back the kefir grains when you're draining out the whey? I'm not able to get very much whey out cleanly before the whey and kefir grains start co-mingling. I'm using a half-gallon jar, so a long broad spatula like yours might do the trick. Thank You!
It's a silicone, spoon spatula (spoonula)... you can find them on Amazon 👍Glad you found the video helpful 🙂
GOD BLESS YOU
I've been experimenting with a 'second ferment' technique with my grains, and the outcomes have been delightful. I'm curious to hear your insights on second fermentation, particularly regarding its potential health benefits. From what I understand, it can boost the population of beneficial bacteria and enhance vitamin content.
This channel is wonderful and all the information, thank you very much 😊🙏🏽🙋🏽♂️🇧🇷
❤God bless You❤
So would whey be tolerated by lactose intolerant people? Thanks! Every time I watch her videos I say out loud I just love that girl! ❤
I love this video. It never occurred to me that I could simply strain off the kefir whey, just as I do for my yogurt! Thanks.
Hi, I'm new at this kefir fermentation. Do you know if I can make Greek yogurt this way? Or must I get a yogurt Start and cook it? I never made either. I sure want to!
yogurt making is a different fermentation and microbes... You can't make official greek yogurt this way. 🙁
@@CleanFoodLiving so maybe unofficially I could! I might try it. I bought a freezer from people that were moving out of the country. They said when I picked it up for an extra 100 I could have all the contents. Organic meats and cheese and packets of yogurt and kefir grains. I'm so excited. I will at least try the kefir fermentation and see how it works! Thank you for your channel. It is absolutely a gift from God watching your blessed hope bloom!
@@justintime6346 Wow, how awesome is that, what a blessing 😊
3:15 whey benefits, 6:20 how to incorporate
I use half and half over whole milk.
I shake the whey to remix with the Kiefer for my evening after dinner cocktail
I blend the whole thing - whey & kefir - with turmeric . We drink a whole glass every evening . Please don’t waste the whey . Also , I never found the real need to keep separating/ sieving kefir . This is a Wholistic way to use the whole product , I feel & it hadn’t harm us in any way ( made my own kefir for last 2 yrs ).
Clean food living I was wondering what you think of rice kefir? Also, do you think we can make l reuteri and gasseria probiotic water?
I never use a spatula to separate grains. I just tap the strainer against the wall of my bowl, and it separates itself! 😄
Is this thick keifer something I could use to ferment mashed potaoes? Will be making my first batch of keifer next week when my grains get here.
Can we add Suger with milk and kefir grain
L. Reuteri Yogurt next =]
Hi dear some doctors asking don't eat yogurt or drink milk because of Casein in milks it heard the stomach is it true and i love to eat yogurt what should I do i appreciate if you answer my question thank you and god bless you
Approximately how long will the whey last when kept in the fridge? Such great, concise but well presented advice. Thank you.
Many weeks👍😊
Love all that you are sharing with us, keep up the great work. Just a small point women and men do not metabolise food in the same way so your comment about thinking that what’s true about men’s strength from fermented whey and women being the same is probably not true; but not a reason not to drink it, it’s still great for our gut health.
Women have muscle as well. Over the age of 60 I think kefir would be wonderful to help prevent sarcopenia.
Thanks so much - wonderful ❤
A question if I may: is overfermenting and consuming the thickened kefir and whey separately advantageous in terms of health to simply consuming the regular kefir? Many thanks in advance 🙏🏻
No advantage to health benefits... it's 100% a texture preference thing👍😊
@@CleanFoodLiving Thanks again ... the best channel on this subject by far! xx
You are discussing in this video the whey from kefir. Does this also apply to drained yogurt whey?
Yes it would👍
What do you think of mixing the kefir with the whey and just have it like that?
I’m new at this and do not know much about it.
If you kid it you will have the best of both worlds?!…
Do you ever use Collagen or Gelatin to Kefir to thicken it? When would you add it? Thanks!❓
Hi from ND, I wanted to ask if we can use ultra-filtered milk (Fairlife brand) for milk kefir?, and another question, if we can make water kefir using coconut water, like Nirvana coconut water? I will be waiting for your video, thanks for all that you teach us.
Yes you can use ultra filtered milk and yes you can make water kefir using coconut water👍🙂
The benefits of whey make me think twice about whether I'd even want to thicken up kefir very often. But then again, I'm already making a very thick L. reuteri yogurt and looking to expand to kefir for a broader probiotic benefit.
Is there a reason why we could not just add L reuteri to the fermentation of kefir? I'm going to try it.
@@binathere2574 It's worth experimenting with, however, the instructions I'm using are to ferment at 100F for 36 hours, which is significantly different from kefir fermentation.
I like all your videos. Continue the good work. Can I ferment “raw unpasteurized milk” using milk kefir grains. We used to buy raw milk from farm, giving them to kids hot (after boiling). But not sure we can just ferment the raw milk and give to kids. I am making water kefir and I want to add some flavor to that, so that I can make them easy for kids. If you can make a video about it, that would be great. Thanks.
Yes you can... in my opinion that is the best milk!
@@CleanFoodLiving Thanks a lot
I make kefir regularly, but with goat milk. However, after straining the kefir before it has separated fully, the kefir grains are left in the strainer, and I preserve them in a small amount off fresh milk in the fridge to be used for the next brew. The way you showed how to make the thick kefir in your video (thank you!), you didn't seem to save any kefir grains, but eating them with the kefir itself? Did I miss something?
P.S. In goat milk, the kefir grains grow very slowly, so there won't be any surplus to set aside. It is rather like caring for a flock of chickens 😊
She strained and saved the grains 2:10
@@Joe_C. Thank you very much !
❤❤❤❤❤🙏
My dog has a fatty galbladder, so she isn't allowed to drink, for example, milk. Is it safe to give her the wey from the Kerif?
Have you ever fermented meat? Any kind of meat?
Can you use A2 milk to make Kefir?
I presume that is what we call semi skinned (low fat milk) in the uk.
I too am wondering if it must be full fat 🥛
Once it’s curds n whey it’s soooo sour 🙁
When the whey is drained, does the curds get a more palatable taste again?
Will this same method work with plant milk?
No it will not😕
Will this method for making thick kefir work with plant based milk as well?
I have Hashimoto’s Disease, and can’t eat dairy. Thank you☺️
No it won't, but you can make the plant milk by not straining out the pulp which will help make it creamier... but not thick like this. Sorry!
should the kefir remain in room temperature until overfermented and are 30 hours enough? Is it safer putting it in the refrigerator since the beginning?
If you put them in the fridge it won’t ferment 😮
Hi Adrienna, do you know if I can put vanilla beans in the jar when I'm making Kefir? Thank you
Not during the kefir making (while the grains are in the milk), but after you strain the grains the next day, yes - then you can add v.bean👍
Adrienna, thank you, I love your videos, I make your carrot sauerkraut and my kefir is great tasting, thanks again for the education @@CleanFoodLiving
@@larrykilgour9813 That is wonderful!
Does using soya milk for kefir also produce the same quality whey? I don’t drink or consume dairy.
Plant based milks do not produce whey because the whey only comes from the milk protein called casein. there's no casein in plant based products, sorry!
My husband has chronic diarrhea. Will this help?
Chronic diarrhea can be serious, so it's best to be working with a doctor and nutritionist who specialize in GI problems. That being said, kefir could help providing it's used in a therapeutic manner. In other words, consuming on an empty stomach and eliminating refined foods from his diet. Staying hydrated and including a very high percentage of fiber are also likely to help. If your husband is a C-section baby or has had an illness that required a lot of antibiotics, a FMT may be indicated.
How long will this process of separation takes? Pls if anyone knows
If the weather s hot above 75’ 12 to 18 hours you will be able to see it 😅
@@patriciavillareal6334 thank you 😊
Hi sorry what is the best milk to use to make a thicker Kiefer ? Thanks
I think she said it's how long you leave the ferment in the fridge it thickens it!
Higher fat content will result in thicker kefir. In other words, whole milk rather than 2%.
Whole milk will be thicker kefir in general. However, I did experiment with this method using non-fat milk and it still worked. 👍😊
@@CleanFoodLiving thanks so much 😊
Whole fat organic milk is best
Do I use normal full cream milk ...🇿🇦
This technique will work for any milk fat content: nonfat, 1%, 2%, whole and cream👍🙂
So basically all you do to make kefir yogurt is strain normal kefir???
can I do the same strategy with the raw farm kefir? leave it on the counter to seperate?
This will work with all dairy milks👍🙂
@@CleanFoodLiving could this process of seperation take more than 3 days on the counter?
@@moeahmad6800 If the environmental temperature is cool, it can take a bit longer.
thank you I was able to do this process using rawfarm kefir and it came out thick! 🙏
@@moeahmad6800 Wonderful!
I've learned a lot on this channel. But not how to pronounce kefir. 😉
Kay fear is the correct pronunciation
Is it possible to make thick water kefir with nut, seed, or oat milk? I cannot tolerate cow’s milk.
No it won't work like this, but you can make the plant milk by not straining out the pulp which will help make it creamier... but not thick like this. Sorry!
Someone told me to use kefir to make biscuits. My question is will heat in cooking or baking kill the good bacteria?
Yes it will kill the probiotics, but you can still cook with it.... just without probiotic benefits 🙂👍
....or make Rivella !!
I imagine cookie with whey would destroy the benefits?
yes it will🙁
@@CleanFoodLivingmay I ask, can I make Greek yogurt with this kefir grain? Thank you, love your videos
@@justintime6346 No, yogurt is a different fermentation, different microbes than kefir. Plus yogurt needs warm temps (98+ F) and kefir grains do not like heat above 85.
I just threw away some liquid gold 🤦🏻♀️.
Why is Kefir taste so nasty. How can you make it taste good
Blend it with blueberries or another sweet fruit of your choice or mix with a little honey to sweeten. Be brave and experiment a little bit. You do get used to the taste but my first thoughts were that it was a little too sour for me. Now i cant wait to eat some 😋
Use it to make smoothies 😅
yoghurt belongs to the Turks
I still prefer it milky 🫢
