This looks like a fun series. Also... a ninja looking like a CPA makes sense, because Ninjas actually blended in and were nigh undetectable because they would be a gardener or a maid.
EDIT: Sometimes, you want an anime that amazes you, impresses you, and gets you to think.
Other times, you just want to see a man get slapped in the face with a haddock.

I love animes like these specifically BECAUSE they are so middle-of-the-road. Not great, not awful, just...okay. Relaxing. Sure, I still love the classic greats, the legends in their own rights, as well as loving the hysterically-awful animes for a good laugh, but sometimes it's nice to settle into something less exciting and high-energy. Nothing that will make me laugh until I'm exhausted, but still "good enough" that I can have a light chuckle at while passing the time.

Idea for a sub series: "Why Japan, Why?".
Explaining anime cliches that Americans do not get off the bat.
    Naked girls are funny?
Sneezing when someone is talking about you?
    Nose bleeding arrousal?
    "I will never forgive you"?
    Who is blackmailing who?
What does this kabuki reference mean compared to other kabuki references?
    Sarin Gas attack what?
Frieza is a landlord stock investor?
Grave of the fireflies means "You kids today are spoiled. If we acted like you we'd be dead"? (Thank you again for that review)
Just, I always love peeling back the context layers of anime beyond "Did you know Astro Boy was inspired by Mickey Mouse?".
There is always more modern otaku who are ALL starting at the same point WE all did: "Anime is better than cartoons because violence and tiddies" and they just let the lost in translation stuff wash over them until they make "Totally Spies" or "Code Lyoko" without understanding what they are watching.

Saw this at a sort of club gathering around 1990. Thought it was pretty darn funny. Asked Greenfield about it at Otakon after it was announced. 1. was it THIS? (it was) and 2. What took so long? The answer to the second is a common issue with one-off and small studio OVAs of the 90s, it took most of that time to figure out who owned the rights.
Getting rights and masters for 80s OVAs that were made by thrown-together companies with mixed and sometimes dubious funding is tricky. Heck, it took Robert Woodhead digging for one such property to turn up the masters for Project A-ko (which was a pretty Big deal in its day, whose masters STILL went missing).

It would provide the Hows and Whys behind the boom, which allowed for material to be animated, which previously would have had no chance of being so.

Is it just me or does Takashi sound like someone doing a Dan Green impression?

Japan likes physical comedy in much the same way old-school British comedy did. Breaking the rules and norms of society in a ludicrous fashion can be very funny! When I was a young and not so expert otaku I thought The Samurai was an actual Rumiko Takahshi story, and can you blame me back then? It's a fun little story, a fun fluff break to enjoy between marathons of more serious stories.

From what I saw during this episode, Ranma and Full Metal Panic!? Fumoffu did the similar comedy bits better. I guess those two learned from 'The Samurai' how not to do the comedy and make it that much better (at least imho). But the animation for this was not bad for back then, so there's a plus.

Just out of curiosity, have you ever watched the anime movie there were 11? If your looking for some good old anime I would put this one on the list if you haven't seen it.

I can't be the only one who went to check if this was a Rumiko Takahashi product

Not having seen this with the intention to see it now after this review, I will say that after every time he narrowly dodges an attack from the girls I flat out went, "Oh shit!" so points there.
