Hope that the surgery and the rehab goes well, coach.
Thank you
Best wishes and a speedy recovery! Thank you for posting this video.
I'm very sorry to hear that you got injured Andy. Hope you have a speedy recovery. A big hug from Italy man, best Wishes!
Sorry to hear. Hope your recovery goes well and thank you for sharing!
Thanks for sharing, good luck with the rehab, you'll get back to it in no time!
thoughts and prayers Andy! recently just got over a bad weightlifting injury myself. you'll come back stronger!
Speedy recovery to you and thanks for sharing the advice.
Appreciate this. If we all shared our mistakes maybe we wouldn't always have to learn the hard way. Good luck with your recovery. You're going to get better.
Thanks for making this video Andy! Speedy recovery to you!
Thanks
Hell at least you got your volume in, Baker. Wish you a speedy recovery ma dude.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this, Andy! I can only imagine your disappointment and frustration. Take care, heal well, and you'll be back!
Thank you Bryan
Sorry to hear that bro. My left bicep has been bothering me as well but nothing I can’t deal with. Hope your recovery goes well 💪
Good luck with surgery and speedy recovery!!! (Subbed)
I wish you will recover as quickly as possible. Stay strength !!
Thanks
Thanks for sharing coach. I use that mixed grip a lot, I’ll be taking your advice if I’m doing volume work as well
Goes to show that even one of the best coaches can make a mistake. Strange, I had changed all my volume pulls to straps per your recommendation months ago. Heal up!
Best wishes for a speedy recovery 😊
Thank you
Tore mine a few days ago. Surgery scheduled for the end of the week. I'll be watching everything I can. Thanks.
appreciate your openness
Thanks
Speedy recovery andy
Thank you for sharing your experience.
I'm sorry, Andy. I wish you a speedy recovery.
Thanks for the humble act of making this video. I know that it isn't easy. As a marine you'll improvise, overcome and adapt that's what gunners do.
Is there any way to warm up that area or is it just an exercise in futility? Thanks Andy.
Nah, my best advice is don't do speed work with a mixed grip.
3:57 answer. Don’t grip and rip. Ease the bar off the ground. Take out bar slack.
Why does everyone refer to that as "bar slack"? Isn't it arm slack?
You can pull the slack out of the bar and still have elbow flexion(arm slack) with lighter weights
every deadlifting bicep tear i've ever seen ALWAYS happens with the UNDERGRIP - i've never seen a deadlifting bicep tear with an OVERGRIP. NEVER -NEVER-NEVER.
Yep, always the supinated hand. I pulled for 20 years with a mixed grip and never had a problem. I got sloppy and careless with a light weight. It wasn't a heavy lift that did it to me.
When I saw the title of this video, I guessed that it happened during a mixed-grip dead lift. Watched half the video and sure enough I was right.
Thx andy , hope you be recovered soon
Thanks
So sorry to hear about this, Andy.
Hope it heals properly and quickly.
Thanks George
Good luck with you surgery and rehab Andy.
Good luck with recovery!
Thank you
Helpful advice
That sucks. Hopefully surgery and rehab go smoothly, good luck!
Thank you, Lane
Always listen to that voice! It's your inner voice that's there to protect.
Hello Andy, I have been there and got the "T" Shirt. I tore the distal tendon in my left bicep. I had it surgically repaired using the endo button. I injured myself doing dumbell preacher curls. The procedure was performed within the 10 day window. Unfortunately, I didn't get back full ROM. The surgeon unfortunately shaved off too much of my tendon. I have had to make the best of a bad situation. With an extended left arm, I only have 50 % supination. Arms held at my side. I have 60 % pronation.
Thank you for the valuable information! Wishing you a speedy recovery
Sorry to hear that, mate
I never had injury from working out, but I had the same injury from helping a father get up stair with his twins boys in a pushchair. Having surgery next Tuesday. I just can’t get over it .
How did your surgery and recovery go?
Really unfortunate to hear Andy. Hope for a speedy recovery!
Thank you James
Sorry to hear coach! If you never have plans to compete would it be better to be safe than sorry and just work with straps??? Hope all goes well with surgery and recovery sir. Appreciate all your content.
Hey Andy, that sucks. I did the same thing on 1/27/18, trying to deadlift 655. I had surgery on 2/12/18. I squatted with an SSB, did dumbbell presses and rows with my good arm, and I figured out a way to keep deadlifting using a couple of 6ft tow staps (you can see video of this in my feed if you are curious. I was able to go back to normal lifting around the 8 week mark, and it's now week 13 post op and I pulled 540x1 yesterday with hook grip. Good luck with the recovery!
That's encouraging. I've talked to several lifters who have had this injury and seems like first 7-10 days sucks and then you start to get better and stronger pretty quickly after that
Yeah, the less time you spend with your arm immobilized the better. I had a splint on for two weeks but after that I didn't wear a brace or anything. ROM came back fast. It depends on what type of surgery you get though, from what I understand. I had the endobutton repair which is a newer technique and supposed to be the strongest method. Some of the older types of repairs are apparently more susceptible to re-tearing and the standard procedure is to put you in a cast for 12 weeks. You can imagine how that turns out... lots of atrophy and much longer recovery.
Just did the same thing this past Wednesday. Seeing the orthopedic on Tuesday. My injury sounds a lot like your. I have no visible swelling or blood. Bicept deformed. No constant pain. Hope your recovery went well. I will be on that same path soon
I'm about 10 months post surgery. I'm back to Deadlifting 500 for reps and doing just about everything else I was doing before without issue. Request the Endo-Button procedure with Arthrex screw. I think it's pretty much the norm now, but as far as I am aware (not a doc) it's about the strongest fix. First 6 weeks post op you pretty much keep arm in sling or brace and then after 6 weeks you can start light light range of motion exercises and light strengthening exercises. At 12 weeks I started training more aggressively albeit very cautiously.
@@andybaker2413 are you deadlifting with straps, hook grip, snatch grip, or went back to over under?
@@anthonywelch7355 I went back to over under, but with the hands switched. I basically make sure I hit one workset like this so that grip is keeping pace with strength, and then all subsequent sets are done with straps. All speed work now done with straps. That is what got me last year. Speed work + mixed grip = dumb. I knew better and paid for it. If I had no desire to compete, I'd just use straps 100% of the time.
How much is the visit and the surgery?
Arms need to be closer to your body and arm pits squeezed tighter and never let your elbow over extend keeping the arm pits tucked.
It just happened to me a week ago, I’m getting surgery next Thursday, I’ve never had a significant injury before and this totally sucks
Recover quickly brother!!
Hope you have a speedy recovery. Would staying hook really effect your lifts?
Probably at first while I get used to it
Hope everything is fine again!
Wondering if you have used antibiotics in the last 5-6 months (particularly cipro family)?
Did they do an MRI to see if it was a complete tear? I’m about 5 months into an injury of the same. No MRI was done and I was diagnosed with a partial tear. It still brings me pain and I’m afraid to go hard like I used to in case of re-tear. No surgery was recommended either
Wish you a speedy rehab.
Thank you Bob
I saw your video.. Thanks for posting. Exactly same thing, but I have a partial rupture. I wondered, what surgery did you go with (button?), how long did it take you get back to weight training. How long were you off before you could resume similar weight? I am really bummed and am wondering how much mass I am going to lose. Any approaches to minimizing this from happening again? I was doing 3 sets of 15. I was in a preacher seat at the time. I will need to get surgery by end of month. Any recommendations for doctors or associations? Can you still do bench, curls, etc?
See the rest of the videos I did on this injury including my rehab, etc. I think I did 3-4 of them.
Hey is ur bicep muscle belly forever shorter now since the injury, or is it back to looking at normal length
Sorry to hear this, but thanks for sharing with us. I have always used a mixed grip on my maximal sets and double overhand on warmups. I started using the hook grip on my first warmup just to get used to it, but I haven't tried it on anything heavier than about 185 lb. I'm thinking I probably just need to suck it up and switch to hook now. I got some straps for volume work, but I haven't had a chance to try them yet.
What was the pain like? I sprained my left ACL twice and completely tore it once; each time, the pain was the type where all I could do was roll around on the ground screaming (kinda like the chase scene in Break Point). I imagine this would be similar.
It was an 11 on a scale of 1-10 for the first hour or so. It subsided relatively quickly through the rest of the day and then has gotten progressively less painful each day since then.
Glad the pain is subsiding. Good luck with surgery!
I wish that you get fast rehab ... i have light bicep tear not complete tear for tow months and pain still with no difference im not working out at all my questions is how can i speed up rehab and can i do push-ups bench dips all dumbbells triceps and shoulder work out or not
What about actively engaging your triceps on the arm with the supinated grip?
I obviously tore mine and didn’t even know because the pain wasn’t so bad I thought I had to see a doc. Well my bicep shortened and rolled up a bit towards my shoulder. It’s been 2 years and I’m living with no pain and full range of motion
Same here. Just happened to me doing the flag. I did see a doc. No surgery but mines rolled towards my forehead a little. How long before u started training like u use to.
Do you think chin ups pose a risk for bicep tears? I train chin ups hard frequently and now Im paranoid lol
Bicep main function is supination, so unless you're deadlifting with a mixed grip you can't get injured
If you didn’t bend your arm or flex the bicep when coming up with weight this wouldn’t have happened?
Just had the same injury yesterday, going to the doctor tomorrow. No bruising , but bicep balled up slightly and when I rotate my play up at 90*, get a bast of pain at the bicep/ forearm area. The big difference for me is that I’m 55 y.o.......did your surgery go well? Was the arm able to stretch to a straight position? And would you take the surgery if you had a choice again? Thanks for the videos
I would absolutely get the surgery again. I can't see a compelling reason not too, but of course I'm not a surgeon or an M.D. My surgery went very well. The recovery sucks, but in the long run, it was really just 6 weeks of being without one arm and then another 6 weeks of easier training, and then back at it 12 weeks in. I have no range of motion issues, no pain, no deformity. Strength is probably 95% back in that arm 1.5 years after surgery.
Andy Baker , thank you. It’s a first real injury I have. Little nervous, but thx for the reply.
Quick summary of the 11:00 min video.
This video is about how you shouldn’t use a over and under grip on a barbell when deadlifting and use straps.
Same exact thing happened to me 2 months ago. Ppl keep telling me to let it heal but it's definitely torn because I can't feel the rod in my elbow going to my bicep in my left arm. This shit sucks
Rod? Did you have surgery?
Hey Andy, what would your advice be for a partial distal bicep tear?
I can't give out medical advice on stuff I don't have experience with. There are options to get it repaired or leave it alone. I think just consult with an orthopedic doc and discuss your options based on the nature of the injury and your own unique circumstances.
@@andybaker2413 thanks big man, you heard of any success stories with BPC 157?
Hope the surgery goes well. I also have a injury but I am not sure what level of injury I have. I think this is with the distal tendon. I cannot full flex my arm and contract without a lot of pain the front elbow. Plus, hammer curls are impossible. Suppination is painful. Could it be tendinitis, when I did the injury I don't remember any popping.
Surgery was like 9 months ago, but thanks. Recovered well. If the bicep is totally ruptured you'd likely remember the moment in time. I know I won't forget the feeling. It's a little more than a "pop" You'll have a gap above your elbow where bicep used to be and much of the muscle will "ball up" closer to the shoulder. My biceps are fairly large so it was really easy to see, but is less obvious on a smaller arm. May be a partial tear. I'd advise you get checked out by an orthopedic doctor, they can diagnose fairly quickly even without MRI. If it needs to be repaired it's best to get it done ASAP, I was advised between 7-10 days and no later if possible. Good luck
@@andybaker2413 Thanks Andy, glad you are back to normal. Yes, I wasn't like your injury, maybe partial and just very severe tendonitis? I'm in the UK so might have to pay to get this looked at. Did this back in November!
How quick did you recover. Just did this and unfortunately I work construction and need my arm for a paycheck
Same. I'm out for three months and I think my boss hates me because I'm not getting workmans comp or anything.b it's so fucking unfair. I'm totally fucked.
So what's the final results been like? Have you been able to work out that bicep regularly?
Very positive. Yes I can do everything . I'm still weaker on direct bicep work and some back work, like chins. But I'm deadlifting 500+ for reps again, doing back work, bicep work without issue except for my strength is still not back 100%.
Thanks for the reply...I see an Ortho tomorrow....Surgery more than likely. You have eased my mind.
@@juggernaut8044 If you have questions about the whole process, feel free to reach out to me via email or contact form on my website and I'll be happy to talk about how I approached the post-op rehab, etc
@@andybaker2413 It means that you can’t improve strength beyond the level you had before the injury?
how bout bicep curls
Wow. Sorry. I hope it heals fine.
I'm about 10 months post-op. It's all good. Back to deadlifting 500+ for reps, rows, pull ups, etc. Still don't have same level of strength I had on things like chin ups, curls, etc, but no major lingering issues.
Don't make the mistake that I made...get a good surgeon! And follow the newest, most aggressive rehab protocol to get things moving quickly and build confidence. Best of luck, you will bounce back.
Hope all goes well. Thanks for sharing.
Hook grip is the only grip.
Bro did it get black and blue. I was training yesterday DB curls and my elbow pop no black or blue.
No. Since the muscle belly didn't really tear (just the tendon) there was very little bleeding and bruising. Probably good idea to get it checked out especially if the lower head of the bicep is deformed/flat at all.
Ah fuck no I'm using straps now or learning hook grip cailer style
I'm gonna go ahead and guess, before watching the video, that it was because of the over under grip on the deadlift. That's why I use hook grip. God I'm gonna feel dumb if I am wrong. I'm watching the video now lol...aaand I was right. Once again, hook grip, I don't understand why people don't use it. It can save you the bicep tears. Seriously though I hope everything healed well. sorry for the tone.
I did the same thing when I saw the title of the video.
Cailer Woolam is pulling more than 900 using the overhand hook grip.
Speed and weights don't mix.
Were you on steroids before/when this happened?
No. I'm lifetime drug free man. Funny though....that was first question surgeon asked me too
Do you think it’s typical for a natural lifters tendon to rupture under such a load or would exercises with full elbow extension such as one arm pull-ups prevent such an injury?
@@neoanderson367 I've talked to dozens of liters in the past year and a half. Almost NONE of the injuries occurred at max loads. All like mine. Loads were heavy enough but not maximal - all just bad positioning or lapse in technique that causes quick elbow extension under load. Most of the injuries from my small sample size have come from strongman type stuff, some from alt grip deads, and few from chins and curls
So is it true what Rip says about the surgery being almost completely cosmetic?
Michael Karayan Rip has had many surgeries.
That sucks
Omg I’m so scared I just ruptured my bicep 😭I’m so scared
Brian Arias bro do the hook test it could be slight and I will send u a link to fix it if u want ?
Oh shit hope ur ok now man I got a little bicep strain atm and idk how to get rid of it but rupturing a bicep is no joke, best of luck w your recovery bro
My shoulder is popping and snapping I'm not sure if its rotator or bicep tendon its going on for a year now sometimes more painful then others noticable strength difference between arms doctor wont even give me a MRI to see what it is starting to get pissed off any suggestions?
This is one of the reasons I dont do deadlifts and many pro athletes that train strength regularly dont either. Deadlift is a harmful lift and there are better, safer ways to train the same muscles.
Did you do an MRI?
What was the result?
Don't need an MRI for a fully ruptured tendon. Visual and manual exam easy to confirm full rupture.
I wish that you get fast rehab ... i have light bicep tear not complete tear for tow months and pain still with no difference im not working out at all my questions is how can i speed up rehab and can i do push-ups bench dips all dumbbells triceps and shoulder work out or not
