A song about his beloved old 1948 Buick Roadmaster hearse, which took him and his music gear everywhere until the gearbox gave in one day on a long slope down into the town of Blind River. Its chrome heart, shining in the sun, describes that grand old car.
To Bill Cohan. I miss and love you ❤. You were in your 80swhen you passed. I was in my 30s. I was devastated. We had some great times. You said I brought comfort to you living next door. It was the opposite. Love you forever.❤
This beautiful song reminds me of a good friend, Bill, who also loved Neil and played guitar & died of ALS last year, at 54. At his memorial a few friends played some Neil Young in his memory. Whenever I hear this song, the tears flow as I remember Bill fondly.
I'm almost 62 now. Only found out 2 years ago as a truck driver that this song was dedicated to his old ride. When I hear it now, I say thanks to Neil for nailing this relationship between a man & his 1st car & singing it in a song. Right on.
This song is dedicated to my grandfather. He passed away 3 weeks ago from Cancer. This is the theme song for the relay for life. Love and miss you Papa
To my first car... 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee... spent countless hours and a lot of blood, sweat and tears fixing, maintaining and modifying her. Where ever you are baby... long may you run.
+hamilton5071 sorry buddy but I loaded her up with Rap, R&B and other Poop Music, then I doused her in gas, shoved a plank against the accelerator, pointed her in the direction of the setting sun and a big cliff, closed my eyes, lit a smoke, then jumped out before the cliff... I dont know what you did to that Jeep but it never ran good so I had to end it all.
+Bobs Cats And sorry B.C., but after that car just missed landing on me, and bounced a bit, it landed sound and runnin' still! I thustly then took the driver's-throne. And having (thankfully) a 1975 Springsteen cassette tape in my back pocket, inserted it so, and drove home. A great 2nd car for me now. It lives! I hopes UR not disappointed! I guess the Cherokee was 'born to run'!
There was a scene during the closing ceremonies while Niel was performing this song that showed the gold-medal winning Canadian bobsleigh team of Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse enjoying the song and basking in the last few minutes of the Olympic Torches' glow with their eyes closed. That image made me happy and sad at the same time, it reminded me that all things have a start and an end, and we as Canadians should take pride in our accomplishments at theses games, even if the flame is out.
that shows how much respect Neil had for Conan performing it on the last show, so beautiful!!!! I hope somewhere someone has that performance saved because it's a masterpiece... Conan come back soon darling because you are one of a kind.
Just rolled through Blind River Ontario this morning at 3am on a Freight Train Westbound...Long May You Run! When I go through Blind...I catch myself to the hum of Neil!
neil young has sons with cerebral palsy and he and several musicians(CSN included) sing each year at his summer camp for the disabled... he made a video of his son riding in the back of his truck through the woods and he played this song...though confined to a wheel chair..."long may you run"
For me this registers memories of people, animals cars and trucks that have shared my life with me... though most of all of them are gone, I still wish them 'long may you run'...
we all hung out together and some of us lost brothers and sisters to the drug wars and we will never forget them ever ..............................veterans of the lonely war, circa 70, 80, 90 and ad infinitum love you Neil and thanks for love in song
O.K. This song was first released on the "Stills-Young Band" album 'Long May you Run', in 1976. It has a beautiful pencil drawing of an American Bison on the cover. Neil first met Steve in Thunder Bay after he dropped out of high school (in Winnepeg) and Steve was touring with the New Cristy Minstrels. After Neil's band broke up, he decided to move to California. Steve recognized Neil's band's hurse driving on the Cali. 401 in 1969. The band carried their equipment in a black hurse in Canada.
The stylish Pontiacs of the 70s, GTOs, LeMans, great cars, great power, my Dad bought me one when I was 16. Whenever people talk about It always brings me good memories, my first car, first kiss, first high school football games, first drive on my own to the beach.
On the Olympic games in Canada one of dudes said in the commetns that those song should be Canada Anthem. It was so awesome.``Long may you run``Neil Young)))it was so brilliant to see Neil on that show)respect to CANADA from Ukraine)))sorry for bad English)
I sent my first car to the junk yard 6 years ago , it was a 72 rally nova.I miss that car it was misstreated raced, and just plain abused.yet it was always there for me.I miss her sniff sniff.
What can I say--I lost my cousin this year. he had cancer and we use to listen to Neil all day long back in the 70's and 80's. Neil made us laugh and cry. There are only a few American bands that lasted through the British invasion of that period. Neil still Rocks!
About three semesters before I graduated from college, one of the journalism majors quoted the opening lines in his farewell column. So when my friends and I graduated, I played the song at our party. Almost everyone got choked up, so yeah it works on lots of levels.
I've been a Neil Young fan from the early 70's, and continue to listen to his music. My son gave me a copy of Neil's book for Christmas last year. It was an enjoyable book....but I think Neil shouldn't quit his day job.
Blind River is a town in Northern Ontario, Canada. "But we missed that shift on the long decline" refers to a long hill just outside of town on the Trans Canada Highway where Neil and the boys supposedly dropped the transmission in their hearse. Perhaps Neil is too deep to just sing about his hearse that he had many adventures in, it's up to you to decide. "Get me to the surf on time" is a spin-off from the play My Fair Lady and the song called Get Me To The Church on Time. Neil is simply #1!
We've been through Some things together With trunks of memories Still to come We found things to do In stormy weather Long may you run. Long may you run. Long may you run. Although these changes Have come With your chrome heart shining In the sun Long may you run. Well, it was Back in Blind River in 1962 When I last saw you alive But we missed that shift On the long decline Long may you run. Long may you run. Long may you run. Although these changes Have come With your chrome heart shining In the sun Long may you run. Maybe The Beach Boys Have got you now With those waves Singing "Caroline No" Rollin' down That empty ocean road Gettin' to the surf on time. Long may you run. Long may you run. Although these changes Have come With your chrome heart shining In the sun Long may you run.
A tragedy that this couldn't be included in the official Wonder Years DVD release (yes there finally is one), after it had been used in the original airing of The Family Car. One of the many outstanding episodes and you'd swear this song was written for it. Still love Neil, and thankful for his appearances on Conan especially the final Tonight Show.
Me and Richie Hall saw this guy THE day the was in Vietnam was over! They put it up on the neon sign or whatever they had back then. Meanwhile, we had nose bleed seats....but it was still awesome and then some!!!!!!!!
Hey Pain... I totally agree. I never suspected Neil would perform... I will admit that I cried. Neil Young is one of those Canadian icons that fit the Canadian perspective. AM I THE ONLY ONE PROUD TO SAY... I AM CANADIAN!!!!
I had to give up my old car this weekend. I cried. I kissed her good-bye. This song applies to a woman and her car as well. Thank you, Neil, for understanding.
I'm a stoic American, but when Neil performed this, I not only thought about the past 2 weeks but about a million other things. Thanks for the memories Canada, Neil, and Olympians.
The song is about a hearse that Neil and his band used to drive around Canada in. Blind River is a town in northern Ontario halfway along the north shore of Lake Huron. Just down the road from Bruce Mines where I used to live.
A beautiful metaphor on his part. Even though the song refers to one of his beloved cars he owned, the lyrics also play into relationships one may have with someone you care deeply about. One that makes you happy and to deal with whatever life throws at you to keep that relation strong no matter what....................................
I don't care if the song is about his car, his dog, or the old neighborhood lady he cut grass for as a kid. It's a great passionate and sincere tune. Great stuff
Neil struggled to get through this. His great friend Larry Johnson had just died the day before and whilst he he sings this for Conan it's really dedicated to Larry... according to his extremely readable book.
my very favorite from my old Canadian buddy Neil Young to all my google friends. long may you run......... and yes, i know Blind River, Ontario Canada very well. one of my favorite places on this whole planet........
Neil is just one of those singers who sings from his heart. There is no one else like him. When I hear his songs on the radio, it stops me in my tracks and it always makes me smile. Thanks for posting!
Nice. The Olympics were bookended by two beautiful performances -- in the opening ceremony, K.D. Lang's luminescent renditon of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," and this song by Neil in the closing ceremony.
I'm still so glad that they picked Young over almost every singer for the Vancouver 2010 closing ceremonies. This has always been a favourite of mine and I was worried they'd pass over him because this isn't exactly new music (though a hell of a lot better than it).
@TimF1994 Neil liked to travel in old hearse's. He was traveling from Thunder Bay, ONT to Toronto when it broke down outside Blind River. That's what the song's about. He also traveled from Toronto to Los Angelas in another old hearse with Bruce Palmer and a bunch of other people, back in 1965.

Love you Bill Cohan!! I'm glad you aren't in pain anymore. I remember. January 12, 2012
I was devastated my friend. I miss you 🤗
Yesterday was Neil Young’s birthday. 75 years old. Longer may you run Neil. Thanks for all the great songs.
I'm almost 62 now. Only found out 2 years ago as a truck driver that this song was dedicated to his old ride. When I hear it now, I say thanks to Neil for nailing this relationship between a man & his 1st car & singing it in a song. Right on.
He's such a loving heart! Long may YOU run, Neil"
Love the song,I live in Blind River and his old Hearse is still here.
Morty?
This song is dedicated to my grandfather. He passed away 3 weeks ago from Cancer. This is the theme song for the relay for life. Love and miss you Papa
Beautiful song ,,🎶
Always think of Arlene when I hear this! RIP sis! Love and miss you!
yeah, this is the same message i would send to all those i care about the most..... long may you run...
Just handed in the plates to my old VW, and thought of this song. RIP.
To my first car... 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee... spent countless hours and a lot of blood, sweat and tears fixing, maintaining and modifying her. Where ever you are baby... long may you run.

Neil Young - Long may you run - pure talent lasts a long long time.
For my friend Peter, who was a huge "Neiler" fan........and left us in 1995....Long May you run up there Pete....
This was my class of '79 song, we voted, not what I would have picked! Yes, this was about a car. It still brings back good memories!
Neil keeps me going
There was a scene during the closing ceremonies while Niel was performing this song that showed the gold-medal winning Canadian bobsleigh team of Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse enjoying the song and basking in the last few minutes of the Olympic Torches' glow with their eyes closed. My dad's memorial song. Long may you run, Daddy. :-)
God, I love this music! Takes me way back! Makes me smile at a simpler and happier time!
was on the radio when ik worked in a warehouse ..oh god..everyone was happy at that moment ! love you neil fans! all the best from Holland !
makes me miss my boy, long my you run.
that shows how much respect Neil had for Conan performing it on the last show, so beautiful!!!! I hope somewhere someone has that performance saved because it's a masterpiece...
Conan come back soon darling because you are one of a kind.

RIP beautiful, sweet Duke. Long may you run.

This was a wonderful song to close out the Olympics. Almost a Canadian anthem in itself! Proud to be a CANADIAN...
we all hung out together and some of us lost brothers and sisters to the drug wars and we will never forget them ever ..............................veterans of the lonely war, circa 70, 80, 90 and ad infinitum
love you Neil and thanks for love in song
Well, Well, Well! MY Father had a 1948 Buick Roadmaster! He died in 1998. This is for MY FATHER!

Where have artist like this gone?
These words fell out of Heaven even though we can Imagine that there is none.
The stylish Pontiacs of the 70s, GTOs, LeMans, great cars, great power, my Dad bought me one when I was 16. Whenever people talk about It always brings me good memories, my first car, first kiss, first high school football games, first drive on my own to the beach.
i'll always think of my older brother Mike who passed in '06..he taught me the difference between music and muzak..long may you run Mike
this is me and my dad's song, he got me started with neil young =] love you daddy
On the Olympic games in Canada one of dudes said in the commetns that those song should be Canada Anthem. It was so awesome.``Long may you run``Neil Young)))it was so brilliant to see Neil on that show)respect to CANADA from Ukraine)))sorry for bad English)
Love this song......From another Canadian
I sent my first car to the junk yard 6 years ago , it was a 72 rally nova.I miss that car it was misstreated raced, and just plain abused.yet it was always there for me.I miss her sniff sniff.
Happy Birthday Neil.... love your music always! Long may YOU run!
Happy birthday Neil.
Gosh I had never heard this song, but I think I love it.
We'll miss ya Coco, be sure to come back with a vengeance in 7 months.

Blind River represent! I love this song.
His songs are so mournful. This song is great! Especially at the Olympics!!
Beautifull song.
Thats for sure.
Thanks for posting.
total heaven
Wonderful every time again!
Still think this is Neil's best song ever. Played it at my Dad's funeral. RIP Jimmy Wayne Bowman (1948-2000)
"this song i wrote to a memory of my first car evr" said neil live back in 1975. my first one was vw passat 1980, rusty as ever can be..
The song is almost 40 years old and it sounds new again. Thanks Neil !!!!
beautiful job on conan's show wow.
brought tears to my eyes.
damn you leno, damn you.
Such a beautiful way to send out Conan, I look forward to his next show, you can't keep Conan down, long may you run!
This song always reminds me of my late husband. Beautiful.

Thank You Canada.
We've been through
Some things together
With trunks of memories
Still to come
We found things to do
In stormy weather
Long may you run.
Long may you run.
Long may you run.
Although these changes
Have come
With your chrome heart shining
In the sun
Long may you run.
Well, it was
Back in Blind River in 1962
When I last saw you alive
But we missed that shift
On the long decline
Long may you run.
Long may you run.
Long may you run.
Although these changes
Have come

In the sun
Long may you run.
Maybe The Beach Boys
Have got you now
With those waves
Singing "Caroline No"
Rollin' down

Gettin' to the surf on time.
Long may you run.
Long may you run.
Although these changes

Neil Young is a link between the sixties and now. No one has made that happen.
Me and Richie Hall saw this guy THE day the was in Vietnam was over! They put it up on the neon sign or whatever they had back then. Meanwhile, we had nose bleed seats....but it was still awesome and then some!!!!!!!!
Kids Under Cover in MEL AUS brought me here. They are a great org-looking after those who'll shape the future! Many thanks KUC!
Hey Pain... I totally agree. I never suspected Neil would perform... I will admit that I cried. Neil Young is one of those Canadian icons that fit the Canadian perspective. AM I THE ONLY ONE PROUD TO SAY... I AM CANADIAN!!!!
Just Neil's music takes me so far away, the lyrics add to the journey, Aahhhhhhhh yea!! love his music...
I had to give up my old car this weekend. I cried. I kissed her good-bye. This song applies to a woman and her car as well. Thank you, Neil, for understanding.

Two outstanding moments in the closing cermonies: Neil Young singing this song and the Russians teaching us how to sing a national anthem
a beautiful performance on conan's last show tonight.. beautiful.
This song reminds me of When I was a young girl, and now I am thankful I hear it now... thank you Neil Young 💚💚💚
Nevertheless life goes on 😊💚😎
Neil I am a grown man and you make me tear. I'm not embarrassed, but proud to be Canadian.
Long May You Run good sir, for you are a gift from God.
Neil struggled to get through this. His great friend Larry Johnson had just died the day before and whilst he he sings this for Conan it's really dedicated to Larry... according to his extremely readable book.
Love this song and Neil! I think his car in this song is a metaphor for all things and people that we knew, loved and miss.
I been down that long decline in Blind River many a time. Thanks Neil you are so Canadian.
my very favorite from my old Canadian buddy Neil Young to all my google friends. long may you run......... and yes, i know Blind River, Ontario Canada very well. one of my favorite places on this whole planet........

To rahlgren. Totally about his first car. Glad someone knew this. I dedicate it to my 1973 VW 411. Sure do miss it. I hope it's still running~♥
LOVE NEIL!!!
Neil is too good. Long may you run Mr. Young!
I met one of the original Beach Boyz, Al Jardine! He lives in Big Sur. I saw him and his son often in the Village! Cool dude!
Neil is just one of those singers who sings from his heart. There is no one else

Great song by a great artist.
Canada's own, a musical ride to tipperary..
I love what he's done with his hair.
It can be either - or neither... That's the beauty of art, isn't it?
Thanks for the great footage!
I seen Neil Young in concert 7 times. This is one of my all time favorites.
Nice.
The Olympics were bookended by two beautiful performances -- in the opening ceremony, K.D. Lang's luminescent renditon of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," and this song by Neil in the closing ceremony.
We played this song at my daddy's funeral. I don't know if it's about a car or not. But it reminds me of my dad every time i hear it.
GREAT CANADIAN ARTIST !
Loved this song when he performed it on Conan's last show. Very happy he did it again for the Olympics

To all of those I ran with in the 60's......survivors all....long may you run
A Neil Young song is about as pure and honest as it gets.... His music is sincerity personified.
Yes and yes again!
@@billwhite9703 Wow! I posted that 12 years ago Bill...Long may you run indeed! :)
Such a beautiful song!!!!

Thanks so much sharing that story Smudge...long may you run
One of the great artists of our time.
