The spoken word is the best part its lines from Damien in the Omen 3 when hes talking to a statue of a crucified jesus
Every song on this album is a different horror movie. It's a killer concept album that still is great today. I saw them headline at the Metro with In Flames around the time when this was released and they put on an incredible show.
Horror Show came out in 2001. I saw them on tour for the album in 2002 at the Jaxx in Virginia. Great venue, sadly now gone. At that time Matt was absolutely unbelievable live. The vocals on Wolf are pretty ridiculous if you are looking for another good song from them (coincedentally off the same album, and I'd say one of if not their best). Also this was their best lineup. Featuring Richard Christy of Death/Control Denied on drums and Steve DiGorgio (also of Death) on bass. This was Matt Barlow's final album with the band until he came back for one more album with Something Wicked Part II. The band lineup would remain unchanged for the next album The Glorious Burden featuring Tim "Ripper" Owens on vocals.
I'd say Iced Earth is not really power metal. More traditional heavy metal with thrash and power metal elements. They take alot from Iron Maiden with the galloping riffs but have a heaviness more akin to that of a Nevermore. Early albums were more heavy/thrash influenced such as Night of the Stormrider.
Thanks for the background info my friend, it's much appreciated! I suppose this can be the jumping off point to really dive into legitimate power metal, and for what it's worth, I've found another band to come back to and explore. Both journeys should be quite interesting.
I (and apparently _Sam_ _Dunn_ from the _Metal_ _Evolution_ documentary) would categorize Iced Earth as power metal, just with thrash elements. In my opinion, the vocals and the galloping riffs in IE are a kind of a dead giveaway of the sub genre. They're akin more to the American version or style of power metal just like death metal and thrash metal have differences when crossing the pond. Iced Earth was indeed heavily influenced by NWOBHM, or Iron Maiden for short, just like the European power metal bands. I've gotten the impression over the years that some folks (not calling you out Khellendross specifically, just happened to come across a few), especially on the North American side, seem to dislike the most prevalent, stereotypical, European version of power metal to the extent that they'd rather disassociate American bands from the whole sub genre: Like Pantera and the early records.😈 I'll just leave this here: czcams.com/video/qDpkhGBc7AA/video.html
Oh yes, even my favorite band , _Nevermore_ , is/was power metal, although they eventually incorporated so many styles that a more accurate description would be something like power/thrash with progressive and death metal elements.
Before I found IE around -97 I was listening to _Rage_ - _Black_ _in_ _Mind_ (1995) and _Blind_ _Guardian_ - _Imaginations_ _from_ _the_ _Other_ _Side_ (1995), which were pretty good European counterparts to Iced Earth back in the day. I would recommend the title tracks from both those albums for anyone interested.
Iced Earth is by far one of the most underrated bands who existed, scary how not many people realize how they are good, the lyrics are on point always, Matt Barlow, Tim "Ripper" Owens and now Stu block are monster vocalists, John is a best in guitars
And their lyrics are insane too
One area definitely where you haven't really reacted a lot yet is power metal, cool to see an Iced Earth reaction. Watching now.
They were my top 3 to see before I die... and they eluded me for a decade and a half... but I finally saw them in... 2019 I think it was
Will never happen unfortunately, john schaffer will be going into the witness protection program.
My favorite part of the song is the spoken part... But not because of Barlow but because of the bass... I really love to play this song with my band
cool reaction ! you should react to Iced Earth - dante's inferno (alive in athens) ! It's really something ! :)
I saw them live for the first time on this tour and this was an epic live show..... Awesome songs all.
Horror Show is probably the best album from Iced Earth. A really strong entry in their lineup
I love the Horror Show album - it's a concept album without the songs being (lyrically) interlinked or otherwise connected by anything other than sharing a common theme : classic horror stories/movies.
There are 2 extra songs that I consider part of this album :
1. IE's cover of Transylvania by Iron Maiden (available on the second disc of the deluxe edition of Horror Show). I use it to open the album, and I even mixed in some ambience "spooky sound effects" at the start to introduce the song since it has a cold start (I like formal intros to open albums, especially conceptual ones)...
2. IE's cover of The Ripper by Judas Priest (which appeared on a JP tribute compilation around the same time). Even though IE did their own song on the HS album about Jack The Ripper (simply entitled "Jack"), it seemed fitting to throw that cover of a JP classic on the album as well as an extra bonus track. I place it right up next to Jack, as an unofficial "2-parter song".
The complete tracklist (in MY preferred sequence) feature the following songs (if you wanna explore the album more) :
01. Transylvania [ Iton Maiden cover ]
02. Dracula
03. Frankenstein
04. Im-Ho-Tep (The Pharaoh's Curse)
05. Dragon's Child (The Creature) [ based on The Creature From The Black Lagoon]
06. Wolf
07. Jekyll & Hyde
08. The Ripper [ Judas Priest cover ]
09. Jack
10. Damien [ based on The Omen ]
11. The Phantom Opera Ghost
12. The Ghost Of Freedom [ not a horror song, but the "afterlife" concept earned it a place on this album - it is about a fallen soldier's spirit watching over his family from beyond - more patriotic than scary ]
Hell yeah, love Iced Earth! Never got into them until I saw them live, it was a pretty insane experience.
Still waiting patiently for that Between The Buried And Me reaction you added to the infinite list 4 months ago or so. Not complaining, though! I enjoy alot of the reactions you've been doing recently. Very thought provoking. Keep it up man!
Thanks for the continued support! And not to worry, I shall get to it soon!
Giving you some context for Horror Show. The album is a concept album, and all of the songs are about classic horror movie characters.
Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for the info! I really should have put that together when I looked at the album title, lol.
Wasn't expecting this kind of heaviness and crazy (King Diamond -ish) vocals. Great track! I like it! Solid 6/10 ;)
Probably not gonna listen to it on my own but hey, it was way better and much more pleasant on the ears than I expected! It's just not my genre(s). Although, I can understand why people like this band. Nice melodies, dynamic composition, interesting vocals... Solid musical theatre!
Thanks for the video and another portion of wise words... May The Cow Of Hell be with you Brother! \m/
One of their best songs of this album and its awesome how they threw in the lines from the omen 3
This song is entirely about The Omen.
Sick Video man Iced earth is a Fantastic band.
The chant at the beginning does mention Damien just not pronounced the way we pronounce Damien...
Nice:) next up blind guardian "imagintions from the other side"!
Putting it on the list! :)
React to travel in stygian alive in Athens by iced earth next please. (P.s. they played 2 shows in Athens. 1 for a live album and 1 for a video so the audio is from a different show so the video is off in some places)
Adding it to the list.
Think he's ready for Dante's Inferno?
@@Vazcular after travel in stygian he will be. Dante's inferno is a commitment
Both Damien and Dracula were from the album Horror show which was a theme album so they were about characters, that whole album is full of songs about characters. But Iced Earth has had several singers over the years you should definitely react to another album, probably something off Something Wicked This Way Comes. Or one from the newer album Anthem. Check their CZcams channel officialicedearth.
My suggestions would be to check out more from Horror Show like Phantom of the Opera. The last three songs from Something Wicked, Prophecy, Birth of the Wicked, and The Coming Curse. Then some early stuff like Night of the Stormrider, specifically Travel in Stygian. Maybe my personal favorite. Once checking those out you should be hooked

Nazarene what can you offer.. since you have vomited force from the keeping room of woman you have done nothing except drowned men's desires in a delusion of sanctimonious morality.... I was conceived of a jackal you're paying on the cross was but a splinter compared to the agony of my father
