    It's even more sad than what you discussed - Spawn refused to be a pawn of the devil and began using his powers to go after truly evil people, and at the end after literally killing the devil he was still denied entrance to heaven. All because he loved his wife so much he refused to leave her alone in the world.

    • @krzyszwojciech
      @krzyszwojciech Před 5 lety +8

      It's been a while, but wasn't his refusal caused by the earlier realisation what Heaven and Hell truly are? - the same cold machinations, differing mostly in aesthetics, not caring about your morality or well-being, just aiming to use your soul in their power struggle. IIRC the Heaven actually allowed him to enter somewhere at that time, but it's been him that refused - he already chose the third way, connecting himself to the world itself.
      Then again, the song came out in 1996, so I think quite a while before Spawn killed "the devil".
      A minor point - the demon Malebolgia, while sometimes presented as _the_ Devil, wasn't actually that in the story's larger mythology. Just one of the more powerful demons that took over at the time. The actual Devil [spoiler:] as well as God were two childish siblings who started it all, though never able to defeat one another.

    • @TribulationGuild
      @TribulationGuild Před 5 lety +4

      So in the Spawn story, he originally made the deal with Malebolgia to become an officer in the army of Hell in the eventual war of the Apocalypse. He made the deal just to go back and see his wife, but it came with a lot of things he didn't account for, and the comic is mostly Spawn dealing with Hellborn who hate him, the human criminals and people who wronged him in life, and trying to get his face back so he can go see his wife.
      They don't explain til much later in the story that actually God and Satan are missing and have been for long before the comic started, they were actually banished from their respective realms by their "Mother", as both God and Satan are simply two children of a much more powerful cosmic universal being, and just two of an infinite number of "gods" this Mother has spawned. There's a lot of stuff that happens but in the end Spawn is guided to the Tree of Life where he takes the powers of a god himself, and after Armageddon actually happens and the world is finally destroyed, Spawn remakes it the way it was, but cuts off Hell and Heaven from reaching it, though in the process he gives up his power and is left with a world that has no need for him, and no way for him to return to who he was (though even if he could, it would be useless due to what he realizes about himself and Wanda in his final moments).
      It's not that he was denied entrance into Heaven, it's that he realized early on in the story that the damnation he was seeking to shed, and the Heaven he hoped for wasn't real and he was stuck with the reality that there were no "streets of gold", nor could he die and be rid of his need to be with his wife.

He killed countless people, some evil and some innocent, and when he decided he was tired of the killing and wanted to retire for his wife Wanda he was betrayed by his boss and murdered. He went to hell for all the violence of his life and Malebogia, one of the 7 lords of hell, made a deal with him. Become a hellspawn and lead the armies of hell against heaven and he can see his wife again. In life Spawn thought what he was doing was right and he becomes very angry with god about how things turned out even if a part of himself understands he damned himself through the violence of his life.

Though this song is technically about the comic book character Spawn (as is all of Dark Saga). First off, I want to thank you for reacting to my all time favorite Iced Earth song off of my all time favorite Iced Earth album The Dark Saga. Yes this album is about the comic book character Spawn, the ultimate anti-hero. But you left out some important details in your explanation that give context to the song, and album as a whole. Spawn (Al Simmons) was a former CIA operative that did black ops works, you know the NASTY stuff. The problem was he began to like what he was doing and that caught the attention of the Devil, actually the character was Malebogia not the Devil who was a Prince of Hell. Al was betrayed by his superiors and was killed by other black ops personnel. He Was going to Hell but Malebogia made him a deal, work for me and you can stay on Earth and look after your wife. Al accepted the offer but Malebogia, being a devil, betrayed him and tried to wipe his mind so that he would lead his army of Hellspawn in a war against Heaven. Eventually Al, now a decaying corpse, slowly regains his memories. He goes to see his wife only to realize that she remarried to his best friend; about 5 years have passed since Al's death. Realizing that he was betrayed, who knew?...,began waging a war against the forces of darkness. The reason Al "walks alone" is because he's not only fighting against the forces of Hell but also against the forces of Heaven who deem him a threat. All he wants to do is end his life, and thus his suffering, but Malebogia will not release him and God couldn't care less. It's funny, in the comics, God and the Devil (The Devil) are portrayed as brothers in a eternal squabble but neither one is THE ultimate power in the universe.

    It's a really good song with a lot of emotions, and it does raise some interesting questions.
    Personally I don't feel that anyone that allows eternal punishment, especially horrific ones like torture, can be a good being. By the same notion I can't see the concept of Heaven working for me since I would never be able to be happy knowing that others, especially people I know, were suffering for eternity, especially those that go there just because they believed in the wrong god. I don't really consider myself good when I live such a great life while knowing that innocent children are suffering all over the world, but I'd consider myself truly evil if I was fine with eternal torture.

    19:10 - I don't exactly remember how much of the story was established by the time the song was written or released, but Spawn's mythology is its own thing, inspired by religions but spinning it all in its own way. From your, Christian perspective, it's even _worse_ than what you say, because [spoiler:] neither hell nor heaven care that much about your morality, just about claiming your soul and how they can use it for their benefit in a long power struggle. One thing I always struggled with when I was in catholic school is the notion that God knew what was going to happen when he sent Jesus into the world. This is somewhat of a contradiction to the idea of free will. Is our will really free if God knows what is going to happen? There is the whole idea of omnipotence and omnipresence that plays in to that as well, but they are abstract theoretical concepts. So in the example of Issac used from the old testament, God in theory should have known what Abraham would say which is pretty needlessly cruel. Why would God need a sacrifice anyways? Thats all a big part of why I really dislike the old testament and in general why I have problems with the bible conceptually and believe its more of a historical text of the times, than some sort of direct word from God about how we should live our lives.

    • @marcjanverdelantar9605
      @marcjanverdelantar9605 Před 5 lety

      hi, i think the depictions of situations encountered and elaborated in the old testament is very important to us because it serves as an example for the people in the future when they ask how about if, what about if, and there is mostly always a situation to lead us into which is already depicted in the Bible to serve as an example and an answer to human queries on such situations. For some reason you could almost see the purpose and importance of these stories and depictions of examples of the possible questions we might encounter as we try to learn more about our creator, how he thinks, how he answers, and how he reach us in our own being to choose him over our own self destructive tendencies.

    Late reply! But I think the key here is in the end. "And in my dying breath. My heart hold no regrets, I would not change a thing" He is unwilling to ask for forgiveness for what he did, and therefore the gates of heaven are closed to him. Hell does not want him either so his fate is to walk the earth

    So, this turned out a whole lot different than I expected. "Let's listen to and talk about 'A Question of Heaven' bu Iced Earth", summed up with "I understand the take, but it's based on a false premise, hence had Al Simmons beckoned God to absolve him, God would've."
    Still, though, it was an interesting listen and I understand that your views as protestants aren't necessarily shared by Christians of other convictions but through you I feel I got a better understanding of the concept and aspects of God. Truth be told, it actually made me want to read up on the bible and partake in some sort of philosophical discussion around what different passages may be inferring. I'm not a religious man by any stretch, and I have no intention of delving in to any church of any creed, but I do enjoy learning and understanding, sharing views and ideas with others to better understand how the different aspects of the world appear.
    Tl;dr: Thanks for sharing. I'd loved for you to discuss the song based more on the premise it explores, but I can also understand that it may be completely irrelevant as it doesn't reflect the views of God you hold. Have you listened to and talked about Melancholy (Holy Martyr) by Iced Earth yet? If not, that may be more on point for a reaction video.

    There's a couple decent tellings of Spawn here, but as far as Vin was off I will give my own. Al Simmons (who became Spawn) was a government assassin who was killed by his own people. He was sent to hell for killing people for a living. When he was sent to hell a higher up in Hell named Malebolgia saw something in Al, and wanted him to be an officer in Hell's army to attack Heaven. Malebolgia made a deal if Al became a Hell Spawn (ranking officer) he would be able to see his wife again. To mess with Spawn and try and keep him on the side of hell he is brought back 5 years after his death to find his wife married to his best friend with a daughter he was never able to have or give his wife. Memories come in fragments, and Spawn is tormented. Seeing his wife happy with someone else all Spawn wants to do is die. Hell won't release him, as it values Spawn's skill, and Heaven feeling a bit threatened sends Spawn hunters to kill Spawn. The HBO animated series does a pretty decent telling. As stated in here The Dark Saga is a concept album about Spawn, and it deserves a complete listen in order.

    There was an amazing spawn cartoon series based on spawn (and overseen by Tod McFarlane, the creator of the comic)..I think it was on hbo in 1997 and idk how to access it now but if that's possible I'd highly recommend watching it (there's the 1st few episodes on youtube)..being hbo it was gritty, deep, and vulgar. definately not disney shit. :)

    Hilarious!! During this song, up until @5:35 , did I finally realize, the screaming kids in the background WERE NOT my own (I'm wearing headphones). 😳..oops... anyways...I've been an Iced Earth fan since the late 90's, before CZcams and streaming music... CD's all the way. I've looked at these lyrics on a different note, comparing them to my life, in a way. I do that with many songs. Anyways, this song is so powerful, as well as the band. Still holding out hope that Schaffer works it out and the band can continue. 37 years the band has stood.
