Iced Earth is INSANELY huge in Greece. To a ridiculous degree. Jon (Schaffer) tells a story about them doing a signing at a record store in Athens and the crowd was so massive and was pressed up against the glass to such a degree that it shattered the entire front window of the store. Glass everywhere, people cut. Even now the least live recording they did with their new singer Stu, they also did in Greece, just because the crowd is so insane there.
This recording was never officially released by the band as a dvd and Century Media did it against their wishes after they switched labels. The video footage was poorly shot and corrupted for several songs (which is why there is no video of the legendary live version of "A Question of Heaven"). Still its great to see the incredible stage presence that Matt had as a live singer if you never got the chance to see him live. Also this is a somewhat unusual song with how much upper register work it has. This was not written for Matt's voice thought. It was definitely written with previous singer Johnathon Greely's voice in mind. And you can tell because not only is Matt singing high he's using alot of vocal distortion. Its almost more along the lines of how Halford sang Painkiller slightly more aggressively than most of their other songs which features that top end vocal range. But I love the vocal dynamics here, the aggressive and high intro and outro and the much more melodic middle section which Matt really excels at. Check out "When the Night Falls" from this same Alive in Athens show for a similarly structured song riffwise but without the high vocals.
BTW this is one of my favorite Iced Earth songs and one of my favorite videos to show people new to the band as I think it best encapsulates their overall sound. Their mix of classical, power and thrash with alot of very dynamic vocals.
Oh the Horus thing, they were at the time touring for the album "Something Wicked This Way Comes" which was the first to really define their "mascot" Set Abominae. The cover art for the live album shows Set hovering above Athens. Set Abominae in addition to being their version of "Eddy" is also featured in alot of songs including the center piece 3 song trilogy on that album. The songs being "The Prophecy, Birth of the Wicked and the epic closer The Coming Curse. I would actually recommend doing those three as a single reaction at some point. Each song is fairly unique. This character would later get two entire albums devoted to him. One with singer Tim Owens (of Judas Priest fame) and another with Matt when he returned for one final album before retiring.

I am 52 and my first concert was 1980. And have been to over 120 old school concerts and can tell you that everything was better back then.

Matt Barlow, the singer in this video, uses his high pitched voice for times when he is showing anger/pain/anguish. A lot of their albums are stories, so you are hearing a song where the character of story is feeling one of those emotions

Iced Earth have always, to me, been fantastic storytellers in the way the lyrics and the music create such powerful visuals and atmosphere. Travel In Stygian is a part of a story about a damned soul who makes a deal with a dark power and becomes the Stormrider, a mythical figure that battles angels and brings destruction. The way I see it, it's a bit like the story of the comic book Spawn, which they ironically made an entire album out of right after, but I definitely think Night of the Stormrider was influenced by it a lot way back when it was written.
I can't really comment on liking or not liking the high pitched vocals, as that's a matter of taste, but I do have to say it's really refreshing to hear someone say "While this isn't my thing per say, I can absolutely recognize the incredible talent and vocal range someone has to have to do that." which a lot of people seem to miss completely. Personally, I've always loved those high pitched screams because for some weird reason, I love hearing a singer push themselves to really hit notes, it feels like it adds more to the experience. Maybe because I feel somehow that by noticing the effort they put in to get to those notes and produce these sounds and melodies, it conveys their passion for the music even more. Or not, I don't know, that might be why my brain likes it.
Anyway, glad you enjoyed it! Alive in Athens is a seminal moment in Iced Earth history, and contains pretty much all of their best work, their best lineup, and best sound. There's tons of other songs from the same show worth exploring.

This song is the last song of a concept album, the end of the protagonist's journey.
Try the Something Wicked trilogy. They later did two whole albums fleshing out the concept of that story. The singer on the first one you surely wouldn't care for, he's even more high pitched than Matt (Tim Owens). Matt sang on the 2nd album though when he returned to the band for a short time.

the studio version of this song in his vocal is much better, so Matt don't need to force on the high vocal so much after like 3 hours of show( and dude that is hard), like people already said, it was a song not made for his vocal style, and yet he sang it very good, the other albums sure make more justice for his voice.
The album as you can see is a concept album(my kind of metal album) in short it tells the tale of a man who is betrayed by religion and turns away from it in anger. The dark forces of nature reach out to him and use him as their vessel to bring death and destruction to Earth. he was then dammed to hell from what he did, in this last track he realize realizes that he indeed did the "devil's work" and now its too late to repent.
their "ultimate" album of stories is horror show, is such a fun album it tells the tales of jack the ripper, the mummy, the werewolf, its great, must check that out

Great reaction to an epic piece of music. You killed it, as always. I would definitely like to see more Christian metal reactions on your channel. There's some really amazing Christian metal bands out there that can play.
Here's a couple more for the list. All great songs.
    In Grief - Deserted Soul
Monotheist - Desolate, it mourns before me.
    Malchus - Niepoprawny
    Antestor - In Solitude
    Neizbezhnost - Demon of Television
    Sanctifica - Red Alert
Elgibbor - The Lord's devastation of the earth
    Cloth - Enter

    • @krypticmuzik5805

@@dannymcgovern6904 Yeah, I've heard people compare them to Metallica and Pantera, and I respect that they were trying to give an alternative to these two great bands, but to be honest, It's a massive downgrade. I find Eternal Decision to be very cringe inducing, and especially the song that tries to be Welcome Home Sanitarium(an awful attempt). Their music is very plain and repetitive, and their vocals are just bad, IMO.
I don't care for them at all, and I'm just being honest. Can't recommend them to anybody.

@@ArdensSedVirens1 Yes, The Forsaken is a great album, and one that I'm proud to own, and although many in the secular crowd may recoil, it goes to show how biases can blind, because Hellhammer does an excellent job on the drums in that album. Omen is a very good album as well.

  • @syegfryedhellscream9508

    The Egyptian figure is their mascote, Set abominae, its basically the "anti-Christ" but not really, Schaffer is a great writer, and he did his own history with the premise of destroying humanity, short story: humans were not native of earth, they come from space and killed almost the entire Setian race( the native race, the true people of earth) thee setian look like humans, so they hide and joined society and prophesied a being who would avenge then and kill mankind, since then they were pulling the strings of society, and were responsible for many acts in history, like Kenedy, Jesus and so on;
Its rly a great story, a bit cheesy in certain parts like almost everything related to the genre, but oh man its a epic journey, you as a writer would love it
