I just lost my last rat a few days ago, he was 3 years old and I really miss them and I miss having rats, today I watched some cute mice videos and now I feel like I need a mice haha, I'm thinking about getting a new pet maybe 6 months from now, I wanted rats but I'm not sure if I have heart to through everything again since their life spam is too short. I'm still heartbroken, I don't know how much more times I handle this kind of pain. Since mice can't bond like rats, do you think they would be a better option in my situation?

The biggest difference between the two is that rats are socially intelligent and empathetic pets. They're companion animals, and they easily recognize you as an individual being. They bond and interact with you the way a dog or cat would.
Mice, on the other hand, are quite timid. And even when fully tamed and unafraid of you, they don't have the capacity to "see" you the way rats can. In a way, mice only know you as a pair of hands that feed and interact with them, and most mice could care less to seek out your attention. (most exceptions seem to be lone male mice, as you mentioned!) Mice are pets that you observe, more than anything.
Both animals make amazing pets, but it's important to know clearly what you're looking for before you choose one. If you want a pet to be your buddy and return the bond/affection you show them, than you'll want to go for rats.
But while mice aren't cuddly pets, they're very fun to watch and fairly low-maintenance! I especially recommend them to night-owls or people who like DIY, and they're good pets if you live in a small home, don't have a huge budget, or the large amount of time required by lots of other pets. (Even rats should be out and interacting with you for more than an hour each day. However most mice are just fine to have 30-40 minutes of supervised playtime, provided their enclosure is enriching)

Actually, studies have shown that mice are also just as empathetic and caring. Just because an animal is shy doesnt mean it doesnt care about you. Similar things can be said about cats. People assume cats hate people because theyre not on the level of dogs, but cats just enjoy personal space and quiet sleep.

For the most part I agree. I've had both pet rats and mice (more rats than mice though) and mice do tend to be "lesser" pets than rats. However there are exceptions to every rule. I used to have two domestic mice that I bought together. Both female. One was white, the other was brown and looked just like a wild mouse. The white mouse was an absolute ditz- she was terrified of everything (until I handled her excessively and got her over her fear) and never showed any hint of interest in me or most anything around her, and was extremely cautious. The brown mouse on the other hand, was tame right from the start and LOVED to be handled. She'd actually climb my hand when I reached into her cage, and when she and her "sister" were having their playtime outside the cage, she would keep running back to me for attention! She also noticed the round holes ("windows") I cut into the cardboard tubes the mice played in, and duplicated them perfectly in the little nesting boxes in their cage by cutting out the holes with her teeth! The same size and shape! And, my mother and I would be sitting in separate chairs in the living room, and I'd have the brown mouse with me and say to her, "Where's Grammy?" And I kid you not, the little mouse would turn her head in my mom's direction, and then Mom would call to her and hold her arm out and the mouse would run across her arm and sit on her shoulder! That little brown critter was hands-down the smartest mouse I have ever seen, and I believe a very unusual one too.

Before he could open his eyes i would gently rub his snout snd he would almost fall asleep in my hands. After his eyes opened i continued this technique so he would recognize that i was the one doing that before. And Stuart has been such a loving and affectionate mouse. He seeks me out snd goes into my hand snd curls up and rubs his face on my hand asking for attention and when i start rubbing his snout he just relaxes completely snd lays there waving his paw up and down slowly with his eyes closed like hes in heaven its the cutest thing ever. I can't choose, I have to have both. I prefer male mice over female mice though. Female mice have each other so they are emotionless and dislike me, but male mice are alone and crave my love and attention. I've owned mice for over 4 years, and I've only had one female mouse bond with me. All my other males bonded with me quickly and wanted my love unlike females. I currently have a male mouse who is obsessed with me. Everytime I open the door to walk into my room he quickly runs out and waits for me to get him out, and if I don't he lays down and pouts. Although, I'm not really sure because I don't really know anything about mice and neither of his ears stick up very much.
I expected to have to put him out of his misery (I don't actually know which gender the mouse is) but seeing as he will hopefully live I decided to take him in and then release him when he gets better. Thing is though, I decided to pick him up and he's super into being held. In fact I'm holding him in my left hand as I type this, and that's why I found this video in the first place. When I put him down he comes back to my hand and wants to be held and cuddled. I might keep him but the problem is I have 5 rodent killing cats, but they're oblivious to him for now. I really like this little mouse already lol, although he does leave little poops everywhere. How do I figure out what gender this mouse really is?

I'm currently a mousie momma to 7 mice, all girls. I've found that it depends on the personality of the mice and how much time you dedicate to them on how they bond with you. Holda who I've had for about 5 days now will literately crawl up her cage until I get her out for cuddles. She has also taken to grooming me regularly. Where as Namaka who I've had for almost a year is just starting to really enjoy time with me. But, I'm forever hooked on mousies. I love watching them climb in their castle when they table time and how curious they are. My first two even became friends with my old Lab before they all passed, one going as far as wanting to cuddle with him while he laid down or napped.

After owning both, I’ve found that I enjoy having rats a lot more than mice. Both because of their smell and personality. Mice are great, but rats are higher up on the scale. I have my rats (female) cage in my room, and with a full clean every few days I hardly notice a smell. Mice, however... I found that they smelled quickly after cleaning, and that bs was strong. 😷 Rats remind me more of a dog or cat in their personality and want for attention, while the mice seemed completely content doing their own thing.
Hmm. Overall, I feel like rats are more fun to own with their personalities, but mice seem a lot easier to care for. At least in my experience. Both are great little animals, just depends on your individual preference and what you want to experience while owning either of them. One of my mice loved attention, the others were pretty happy in their tank. Depends on the individual rat/mouse, but all of my rats love and seek out attention. 🐀🐁

I wouldn't necessarily say that cats are more affectionate, it really depends on your rat, some are very cuddly, others not at all. Rats are however extremely curious animals and mine really enjoy exploring new things/areas.

I know folks say mice are more flighty, but I've had mice most my life and I've encountered a whole spectrum of them. I guess it comes down to luck but I have had some mice that would LOVE my attention by licking/grooming my hands and hopping on my hand the second I lowered it into the cage. I suggest adopting a mouse as young as when they're ready to leave the mother and hanging out with the young'uns for a bit to see which one is the most curious and content with your presence. It's what I aways did and the majority of my mice were either just, tame or they'd actually be quite cuddly!
RIP Miss Bean, Sir Stinkie and their daughter Circe, the cuddliest little mice family I've ever had the pleasure to own.

Female rats tend to be more playful, that's probably why, if you want more cuddly rats, try male rats instead, just please do your research first, female and male rats are different in some cases.

My mouse was a breeze to bond with. He took less than a day to trust me and by day 2 he genuinely liked me and bruxed as I held him. Now he gives me kisses and popcorns when I play with him.
I've had rats too and found they're pretty similar in the way they form bonds with you. Biggest difference is cage size so if you dont mind spending more and have the space then a rat is good for you but if you're limited on space then a mouse is ideal... although you should still give them a decent amount of space.
Another thing about mice is if you want a pet to look at then multiple female mice are good but if you want one to bond with more then a solo male is perfect.

I have had at least four male rats. Rats do form a closer bond with you for sure. They however require a lot more vet treatments. One rat I had to spend over a thousand pounds on at the vets. He was well worth it though. All 4 had to see a vet at some point. Respiratory problems are highly likely no matter how clean you keep their cage. I cleaned mine daily. I have had male and female mice. Mice are very sweet. My male mouse was very cuddly and formed a very good bond but his urine was smelly. I loved him all the same though. Mice are a lot cheaper to keep.

They was huge and at night they would knock everything over and climb on me wile i was sleeping. It got so bad you could smell them . We would put traps and poison out but i guess they was so many that we couldnt keep up with them. One night the house caught fire from them chewing wires. I was actually glad though to finally get out the house. Now I'm grown and make sure i keep my house clean and i got few cats aswell. You can say i have been effected from the rats and i hate them. But also understand they serve a purpose just as any other animal does. Aslong as they not crawling on me at night and knocking down everything and chewing through the walls

Though they don’t enjoy being held much, they love my hands and sleeves. They lick, preen, and snuggle me everyday. They know their names and are quite sociable. I sing songs to them and they really enjoy this and Chopin piano. Cheers!

My mice used to beg to come out of their enclosure to hang out with me, they were in a 40 gallon tank, so i’m sure size wasnt the reason.. they all loved me dearly and i’m willing to put the time into another. sadly, though, there’s no reputable breeders in my state so i’ll have to get him from a pet store :(

Oh thank you!! I use adobe premiere pro! That's great that they get along okay! If male mice are to get along, it's always more likely to work out when they're from the same litter. As long as they're not drawing blood from each other and you are seeing positive behaviours then I wouldn't worry too much! My male mouse was housed in a tiny cage with his brothers while she attempted to find homes for them because she didn't have enough cages to split them when they were fighting and it almost ended very badly, but I think it does depend on a lot of factors :)

I *really* wanted rats when I was little but was never able to get them and now at age 19 I recently purchased a male mouse (+ cage, food, everything needed plus enrichments and treats) from a younger cousin because she was bad on money and selling him. Soon after I got him a couple girlfriends knowing i probably wouldnt be able to give him the extra attention a lone mouse needs and knowing male mice can fight, plus reading that it's good to keep two pregnant or nursing mice together - which began about 3 weeks of excessive research on what to do if they were to have babies. I was prepared to sell the babies when they were born and already have people to take most of them when they're older (I have about 10 of the squirmy little fuzzballs altogether now, all about a week old) and planned to just sell the parents with them as well, but I got so attached to these little guys ❤ At day one one of the females I purchased began eating treats out of my hand and now they all easily let me hold them without running off or hiding in the cage tunnels. A friend of mine has rats and I definitely agree that it's much easier to bond with those than mice, I think maybe because they aren't as skittish as mice, which seem very aware of how small they are and prefer to hide, but after watching this video I think mice might be a better pet for me rather than the one I wanted as a kid. Rats would have been much better for me then since they can be held and tamed much easier and I would have wanted that kind of bond, but as a kind of adult that's moved out and has less time to care for them and much less room in my current house, mice are definitely the perfect pet for me ❤🐭 They can be just as sweet and tame with a little extra time and patience, especially if kept in their own quiet room (aside from a fan to drown out outside noises) and always given treats when you need to disturb them a couple times a day (Or more if they arent nursing like my male Yoyo who is with me much more often in his own little cage away from the babies)

Male mice actually don't do well on their own a lot of the time. That's why it's recommended you get a female deer mouse or ASF rat to keep him company, as they can not breed. Just like female mice, males need companionship.
Also, the smell of male mice depends on how dominant the mouse is. My first male mouse was extremely territorial and would mark all over, but the other three of mine, who lived fine together until my original male was gone, hardly smelled at all.

I love both but the smell is sort of a deal breaker for me. I’ve had a leopard gecko in the past and it was debilitating

Rats are great. It took me a month or so to really get them comfortable with me, because they came from a feeder bin and weren’t socialized. They’re very loving and energetic pets. Nothing is better than seeing them brux and boggle.

Boggles are the best! I filmed one of my boys boggling in slow motion for a facebook post.

I have had 2 rats in the past and I’m in love with them and I wish I could get them again but we can’t afford a good cage and I don’t want to give them a bad life but I love them so much 💖
