Thank you so much for this demonstration of the different types of splatters and how to do and how not to do you make it look so easy I look forward to practicing. Thank you so very much.
You are so welcome!
I love this! I've been a pen & ink artist all my life but now that I'm retired I'm looking to expand and do some fun stuff with multi-media and this looks like a riot. Now i just need to get better at water coloring - never was very good at it.
Thank you so much 😊

Thank you, Karen. I wanted to add spattering to a painting last week and realised it was much harder than it looks! This tutorial is a godsend. Lots of better techniques for me to try, explained and demonstrated so clearly. Thank you so much.
As a brand spanking new watercolor beginner, at 65, these simple yet important details, often overlooked in tutorials, are so appreciated! Thank you so much. I came here after trying your abstract tutorial. I made lots of mistakes and messes, but I had fun. My first couple of papers turned out great as backgrounds for mixed media! I plan to continue making more, as it's a great way to learn about color, composition, and the same detailed techniques such as the card scraping and so on. i'm a new subscriber too. 🙂
Thank you for subscribing! So pleased you found this helpful!
I never fail to learn a little something else on every one of your videos. Just amazing!
Absolutely love this. So many virtuoso techniques and comprehensive explanations. I love how you teach, Karen--with overviews and context, showing techniques and also where and how and why we might use them. Thank you so very much. I finally know how to spatter and am inspired to do it more often!
Thank you Susan, really pleased you like the way I teach and you now finally know how to spatter! Yay!
I cannot tell you how glad I am to have found this video! Controlling spatter has been a huge challenge for me (either no spatter or spatter everywhere!). This has opened my eyes and I cannot wait to try using these techniques - thank you!!
So glad you found this tutorial helpful!
I use some of these techniques but forget to use others like the wet on damp which gives such lovely effects, so this video was a great reminder of the many possibilities that watercolours give, very helpful indeed. Thank you so much dear Karen!.
So glad this was helpful Imma. I too forget to use some of these in my tutorials, so great reminder to all!!😁
I had been wondering about this & you have demonstrated it well. Thanks Karen
My pleasure 😊🎨
Thank you so much Karen. Another really inspiring and informative tutorial. I'm amazed at how you keep your content so fresh and interesting considering the regularity of your uploads. You're such a good teacher! I always feel inspired to paint after watching your videos and trying out the techniques too. Wonderful stuff.
Wow! Thank you for your lovely comment Kathryne! I am so pleased you think so and are inspired to paint! Yay!! 😊
All inclusive and detailed tutorial on spattering. I sometimes use a fan brush, too, if I want very elongated spatters. I can incorporate this into my other mediums as well. The palette knife was an especially interesting new technique to me. Thank you so much!
Thank you! So pleased you found this tutorial helpful... especially the use of a palette knife... which is also useful for spattering masking fluid!
Great tips! I didn’t know that tapping back further on the handle of the brush would be so much more effective. Going to remember that one and several other of these great tips. Thanks again for another super tutorial, Karen.
Thanks Janie, so pleased you found this helpful! Yay 😊

Thanks so much, Karen. I echo Janie's comment below. I have always had trouble getting the paint to spatter. I was just tapping too close to the brush tip.

Beautiful paintings, interesting techniques, thank you for sharing, I wish you a happy new year 2022
Thank you Charley 😊
Will now use old bristle brushes that I came across today👏👍
Brilliant! I hope you enjoy spattering with it Pam 😀
Oh! I’ve been tapping too close to the bristles!😮 And I’ll try a stencil brush too! 😁
Instead of my finger, I might try an old credit card. 🤔 or not. 😁
Practice practice play!!! ❤️
THANK YOU!!!
So pleased you found this helpful 🥰
@@KarenRiceArt Yes! 👏👏👏
@@KarenRiceArt Thank you so much for responding on one of your “shorts” to my question regarding spattering and suggesting this helpful lesson. 🎨❤️🍎
Thanks Karen I fail miserably with my spatting some good advice here. Looking forward to experimenting 😁
Wonderful! Have fun Pauline!
This is such a great channel Karen. I wish I had seen this video before I just applied spatter as a final touch to my painting. It was a fail. 😞
I’m glad you have found it for future paintings 😊
Thank you for this wonderful video! I was very frustrated with splattering and this will help immensely. I chuckled when you mentioned masking your computer because my laptop is wearing a lot of paint. 😂
Hi, I use a fan brush for small or fine results, easy control with little amount of overspill.
Thanks for sharing!
Very helpful, thank you! :)
Glad it was helpful 😊

Ooohhh Karen I love that ocean picture. Might I suggest a tutorial of that? This tutorial gives me some ways to practice splattering! Thank you
Thanks Susan, I have already published this tutorial you will be pleased to hear... here is the link :czcams.com/video/CjiDu9V4ww8/video.html
So glad to have discovered this video since my face was covered with splatter yesterday. ;o }
Glad you found it... 😅
that was great also you can use a clip the ones that hold down the paper in a scatch book. thanks
That's a great idea!
Beautiful tips! Thank you! I will find an old oil painting brush to splatter! Do you have a video showing how to soften the edges of shapes to blend in more for an atmospheric mood? Thank you again for a very helpful video!
Thank you! I don't at present, great suggestion for a future tutorial!
Tanks👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you too 😀
Thank you I feel my possibilities enriched such was the quality of your tutorial. I also love your work. I'll look into watering down my acrylics to practice. The ideas ...
I searched 'spray' as I saw Dave Choe use a spray method (I think) using a bottle? he also is a spray-ain't graffiti artist who uses the happy accident -tho controlled. Have you watched him paint on paper? They certainly are not painting lessons, more 'loosen up' painting results.
I'll see better results from patience im sure.
This was just what I needed...I've been smacking my brush with splatters ending up everywhere, except for on my paper 🤫🤭
You are not the only one! So pleased you found this helpful 😀
Very helpful thank you. Would like to know if you can use masking fluid to spatter
Thank you Lynda. Yes you can definitely spatter masking fluid. It does take quite some time to dry. Whatever you do, don’t blow dry it, it’s tricky to remove later if you do 😊
WAs thinking the same, wet into wet would make lovely animal prints!...After some splatter fun, I often find some spots on the floor & in the window! LOL
I agree, I must explore this further Helene. I too have found splatters on the floor etc!!
On one of your videos you mentioned spattering with watercolor pencils and sandpaper. Do you have a tutorial for that? Thank you. Your tutorials are so helpful.
I don’t have a tutorial for the sandpaper and watercolour pencil. Just rub the sandpaper on the tip of the pencil. Allow the pigment to fall into the wet paper to create textures. Hope this helps 😊
Thank you Karen. I will try that. ☺
If you hold a dropper, pipette from a foot or so above paper , you get a fun splat!
You really do!!! Great for experimenting!
Best video ever on spattering! I am actually struggling to spatter white gouache. I want to create opaque white spatters but when I dilute the paint with water to spatter it easily, it looks much lighter. It is very hard to spatter gouache when it has a thicker consistency. How much water do you use when spattering white paint? Thanks very much!
Thanks so much! I add enough water to white gouache to enable me to spatter 😀
Another good spate is white gouache into damp, the effect is similar to salt
Thank you for sharing that Elizabeth, I will give that technique a go soon 😊
Could you do something showing spray from differ spray bottles
What splater technique would you recommend for rain
I would spatter a pale watered down pale get blue.
Cool and what would you splatter with to get the affect of rain in motion
Where can I find information on becoming a patron member? I've looked but can't find it. What's the cost? Thanks ❤
Hi Marie... here is the link for Patreon: www.patreon.com/karenriceart
i always make a fun mess making splatters lol
Me too! 😂
This was great .... but now how do I do it against a wall mural!?!!
Glad you enjoyed it.
Different sizes & types of brushes will give you different paint splatter effects. Generally, smaller brushes with stiff bristles offer the most control. However, you don’t have to limit yourself to a traditional paint brush; you may choose to use other household items. Toothbrushes, for example, or you could use non-brush instruments. Anything you can flick or throw paint with can work well for splatter paint art, from sticks to spoons to straws. 😊
