- Exclusive tutorials: / karenriceart - I show you how to paint this landscape without any drawing using Daniel Smith's PrimaTek watercolours.
Here is a summary of the key points from this atmospheric landscape tutorial.
- The tutorial focuses on creating an atmospheric watercolour landscape painting without any initial drawing, using only washi tape and a lifting-off technique.
- I use Daniel Smith's Primatek watercolour paints, which create interesting granulating and dispersing effects on the paper. Alternatives for the Primatek colors are provided in the description.
- The painting starts with wetting the paper down to the horizon line and then applying the Primatek colors - Sugilitem Piemontite and Mayan Blue Genuine- wet-into-wet to create a moody, stormy sky.
- I use a spritzer bottle and a plastic card to lift off paint and create the illusion of trees/branches along the horizon.
- In the foreground, I paint the grasses and foliage using a mix of Quinacridone Gold and Cascade Green, employing tilting and dry brushing techniques.
- Salt is sprinkled onto the damp paint to create textural effects in the foreground once dry.
- The focal point of the painting is a small cottage, which I created using a lifting-off technique and then I added details such as the roof, windows, and shadows.
- Throughout this tutorial I focused on creating depth, atmosphere, textures and colour harmony to finish the painting.

Breathtakingly beautiful, Karen. Thank you so much for sharing ❤
Thank you so much 😊
Well that’s just annoyingly clever, lifting out a taped area for the house + negative painting for the shaded side. It’s details like that where I go “okay how the heck do they DO that” on the finished piece ✨
One day, I’m going to gain control over my wet-into-wet sky washes that still have light areas preserved. I have no self control lol
Glad you found it helpful. 😊
Really beautiful

I'd like to know the history behind those color names. I'm not an English native speaker, so all the names are new to me.
