Hi Dave, great choice of tents for this review. If I was picking 4 to do a review on it would be exactly the same. You have put a big amount of time and effort into this and the video is a great reference for anyone considering a single hoop tent. Very well explained and thought out comparison. Great to see interior volume demonstrated by the space that you had in the tent... really well done a big and super effort... ATB Tom

@@Fellmandave1 mmm... I haven't had my hands on any of these tents apart from the Akto so hard to say. From my experience my observations would be... Dont like the 20d Fly fabric on the Abisko for 4 season use. The Robens has very poor internal space and poor fabric tension on the fly due to the design, but great value. The Akto is a proven and very well tested 4 season shelter that is super durable and will last the test of time and will hold its price very well but expensive to buy in the first instance. The Tarp Scarp 1 looks really good is well designed, has great interior volume and the option of adding extra poles in harsh conditions. So between the Akto and Scarp 1 is a hard one. Sticking with what I have experience of its the Akto but I am always open to changing my opinion and if I got my hands on the scarp and it had good construction and build quality then I may change my mind. @@TOMHEANEY100But surely you would not prefer the Akto over Abisko for summer use, as the Akto lacks badly on ventilation? I am sorry to but I have to say, I stopped watching your videos as they are always biased to Hilleberg products. Of course they are built to withstand the apocalypse, but should sometimes take into consideration the fair weather backpackers also..

@@JonesJoni hey thank you for giving me a chance to defend myself.. Firstly here I totally change my opinion due to further experiences with other tents.. You are right and in this comparison I would put the Scarp first, Abisko second and the Akto third for the majority of users.. I have rated Hilleberg so highly in the past and still do due to my personal experience. Not from sponsorship or any other reason but in that they have served me so well... A tent is first and foremost a shelter and a 4 season shelter needs to be able to protect in typical 4 season conditions. If something serves you well then it's hard not to be biased. I have also handled around 20 Hilleberg tents and not a single problem regarding stitching or build quality. I bought one Fjallraven tent and had a fabric issue and poor customer service so this doesn't do very well regarding my experience. I have also rated this Abisko Lite 2 very highly on my channel giving other brands a chance with 3 tests on this particular tent. Recently I tested and bought the scarp 1 ultra again giving another brand other than Hilleberg an opportunity. I rate the Scarp 1 Ultra higher than both the Hilleberg Akto and Soulo.. So always open to other peoples opinions, experience and thoughts and changing mine if needed. best wishes Tom

I did 3 days snow camping with my Akto and it was fantastic. Yes it is not perfect tent but I test it in tough condition and it survived. And the most important, I survived too in my shelter...

I went out to get the Starlight 2 now when I saw it on sale, it's a brilliant tent. It's so fast to put up, and the newer versions with the pole sleeve on top makes it spacious inside (inner height 100 cm!).
Yes, it's definately heavy for it's size, you can't argue that, but the value for money and the specs for wind resistance are just too impressive!

I currently have the Abisko 1 and totally agree with your comments on the build quality, I also have the starlight two for those early winter nights where I want a bit of extra room for the evening. The Scarp 1 looks excellent and was on top of my initial list but was always out of stock when I purchased the other two tents. Still would love to trade my starlight 2 for the scarp 1 (essentially for the weight, ventilation and sturdiness) although I think it’s just another excuse for me to buy a new tent.🤣 Brilliant stuff and keep up the good work. Hi.
Old review now, I know. But only last weekend, I was out up on the highest point of the Mendip Hills, in Storm Gerrit in my Starlight 1, and it never budged an inch.
The winds, we recorded, we’re over 50 mph gusts.
My mate was in his Hillaberg souls, which he had to retighten a couple of times, even using Delta pegs. Admittedly, I used beefed up pegs with my starlight, as the ones supplied can cut your fingers, taking out of hard ground.
Imho, the Starlight is up there with the more expensive tents.
    All the best.👍🏾🇬🇧💨

I started my journey with the Starlight 1. I found it to be a superb startup tent! It is sturdy and easy on the wallet. Performance and stats are very high for the price. But, yes, it's a bit cramped. Vestibule is narrow and inner comes a bit close to your nose.
I moved on with both tarptents and Hilleberg Akto, and are very pleased.
But! Value for money on a startup tent is just great with the starlight1.

Somebody who does lots of summit-camping in winter will go for the Akto despite the price. Due to my height, I’m with you on the Scarp. What puts me off is the import. Fantastic Dave. All great tents in their own rights. I've had the scarp 1 and it was amazing. I just needed more space so I've now got the scarp 2 which, although not quite as strong is better for my needs. I've also had a storm star 2p which I've moved on and that, without question was the strongest and most capable but at 2.66kg also quite a bit heavier. I'd be ready interested to see the storm star Vs allak in adverse weather. I'd suggest the £588 price tag of the storm star would look stunning value next to the allak and it's purchase price. I'm gaining a small collection which will need to be thinned out but hopefully the caliber of tents I'm collecting hold their value while I make my mind up 😬🤔😆
Interesting the Robens is so heavy, even for polyester. I guess it's not silpoly, hence lower price, and yunan poles not as light as others.
I'm disappointed more manufacturers aren't using silpoly. Sag really bugs me on nylon. The stretch and relaxation and accidental over tensioning has damaged taped seams on my F10 Nitro, although it's 10 years old so can't complain too much.
The Tent Lab Moonlight 2 is worth a look but out of stock. I think it's the best 3 season tent I've seen online but its very flat roof rules it out as a winter tent.

great and very in-depth study Dave, it gives people a good base to compare the strengths and weaknesses. The choice obviously comes down to each specific person's preferences. For me, the Robens at a fraction of purchase price is a winner BUT I understand not everyone's cup of tea. The newer versions have a lot of strong changes, a good base tent to modify. Still as you say the lack of zip to access and adjust outside vent is infuriating. Keep up the good work.

I'm going to comment only because I find it intersting how differently I come to the plusses and minuses of tents compared to you. FIrstly, I am not a hiker much, but a long distance cyclist, and that changes so many details. Over the last 14 yeas I've bought more tents and hammocks than my wife has bought shoes : with about nine big agness tents (rubbish every last one of them) two british made tents that I've forgotten the names of, two Henry Shire's tarps tents and three Hillibergs. On top of my list of criteria is color. I was once forced to camp under a sign that stated the fine for camping was $5000 USD on the outer banks in North Carolina. In my silver tarptent on a full moon night. The only more conspicuous beacon would be if the tent blinked on and off. That silver is horrible for stealth and bikers often have no recourse but camping behind slightly hidden structure. So a dark color is high on my list. Quality. On that same trip to Florida, my rainbow 1 was completely ripped and destroyed by the wind a few days later - and the wind gusts were no more than about 40 miles per hour. Trip cancelled. I also have a Cloudburst three (made by tarptent) and like it, but the bottom can't be put to the ground completely and so it is pretty bad with blowing sand, where camping on the beach is about 5% of my time camping. I do find that the cloudburst is really nice weight wise compared to my similar Hilleberg Nam,matj 3 .. which is twice the weight and the Tarptent is even better in our hot, hot humid climate. I am not however a fan of those yellow lines, though he is changing some tents to crossgrain now. Lastly, I've talked to Henry, the owner of Tarptent, twice now. It's great to be able to reach a human being, but he is quite surly as if he resents talking to you. Talking to the people at Hilleberg on the other hand has so far been a joy. They even sent me free stuff to try out my ideas of pegging out my Enan better. But both companies are great in that there are humans one can speak to. A rare thing nowadays. I've got three hilleberg tents and smile every time I use them, so says my wife. I love the details like the zipper flaps. Now in two weeks I'm going to do the southern end of the AT trail after a long layoff from hiking and I've found that the ultra light that I so distained as a cycylist is quite a thing. I had a 3 day hike with 31 pounds ... and it kicked my butt. So my next ten is on it's way this week, the tarptent protrail. Horses for courses they say ... and hiking is different than cycling. I really appreciate your review. :)

So for me the smaller tent is not really an issue. The 2 man version of the Starlight is only 250g heavier so it seemed like a no brainer for me. I got it for it's robustness at the price of 130.00 GBP. A Hilliberg might be better for for a 10th of the Price you can't go wrong!

My 1992 version is kerlon 15 material, bit thicker and I use a 10mm pole ( Nammatj size )
I put a large mossie panel in the entrance of inner with zip on the material to control its size, gives better ventilation options and views when lying down. Cut out some Tyvek for a footprint, covering the porch and an extended square end - flap which can be rolled back at night / bad weather - this means I can sit / lie on my sleeping mat angled out of the tent to cook, relax in the open, read etc Got a Keb 2 from 1982 still going strong too. Looked at those although, not the Robens. Owned an akto for about 12 years, and crossed Europe several times using it, been up mount Etna, and many summit camps. In the end I got a bit fed up with its low head height and how flappy it is in strong winds ( that I've seen destroy lesser tents like telemark ). I even managed to tear the farbric a bit on one long trip. I think the three good tents there are great choices, but the real test is what time and weather does to them and the freedom to camp in any location and not be worried it might not be up to it. I do think a tent needs to be 100 cm in height for a liveable space if you're doing longer journeys. I had thought about a Scarp 2 but then they discontinued it, so went for a Southern Cross 2.

I used an Akto from April to early September for 2 years.
With two sleeping mats under me, my head brushed the top of the tent, and I am short.
The amount of space, including the vestibule, was adequate.
This was in north-central Washington state, USA. The coldest was 22 degrees F. (-5.5 Celsius) outside; but 40 degrees F. (4.4 Celsius) inside. I was concerned about ventilation, but I wasn’t going to open any vent.
No wind in my area so I cant report on that.

What a good review! Exhaustive but interesting. The Robens I would not want at any price but each of the others looked plenty good enough. The Hilleberg fabric needs a mention. It flaps. Even on the Soulo. It really flaps. Also, it sags in damp conditions. I’ve had two Aktos. An early one without the hood over the door and a Mk2. The fly on the second one once drooped on to the inner, it sagged so much. Going round the pegs to tighten things up last thing before bed became a ritual with that tent. The biggest problem is UV damage. I replaced the first one because of it and then pushed the second long beyond the point at which I should have retired it. It failed catastrophically! The end came right off. Perhaps the sand-coloured Akto would last longer. I guess the Scarp’s colour would be a big advantage for anyone using the tent a lot in sunny conditions. I got a lot of use out of my Aktos before they pegged out, just in case anyone’s concerned after a recent purchase.

I have owned two helium ul2…
They are a nice easy tent to use. The porch side lifts quite high from the ground which I believe helped with ventilation. The two end vents coils make the tent feel a bit airy on a cold windy night.
My first on I felt the zips on the inner were it’s weakness, the second one I just got fed up with the inner TBS ( tension band system ), just found it annoying.
The end poles were lighter than other similar tents I had used but one single piece as opposed to say a Vango Nevis where the end poles came in two sections, helping to packs down smaller.
The plus side of tent was splitting inner and outer and using two separate dry bags, this way it took up very little space in the pack. The lighter silnylon outer does flap about a bit in the wind and I believe the HH is 3000…
      Hope this helps 👍

I've gone for the Luxe Hexpeak v4a personally, but I can definitely see myself saving and going for a Scarp in the future. One question though, whilst the Hilleberg & Fjallraven have quite dense colours, the Scarp is very light and airy. From experience, this sort of colour can make it difficult to sleep in brighter conditions / cause a bit of a headache. What's your experience with this? Is the material dense enough that the light doesn't come through?

Hi Scott, there are two thumbs down already, from I guess, Petra and friends. I think the colour was exaggerated on this video as the scarp was in sun and the others in shade. I used the scarp for a few nights this summer and didn't find it a problem. That would be individual preference on light penetration but it's a good point. Very popular in both other models is the sand. With the hilleberg bright yellow interior and bright sun. I imagine that's like being asleep in an amber traffic light. One I very much avoid is a red tent with pale inner though.

With those thing's said these similar tents with much lighter materials make so much more sense to me. I' buy an Alkto if the price was right but honestly don't think i'd ever wear out any of them. Here in Winnipeg Canada...know as the windiest city besides Chicago in North America it rarely ever hits 40 mph winds and its usually for 10 minutes once a year when a tornado lands somewhere lol. Any of these would die because of UV degredation long before wind destroys them. Which ever was lighest and cheapest would be the best for 99.9% of all outdoormen. Most of the world doesn't ever experience wind like the UK. You guys truly have some crazy winds.

Not sure what you mean about the heat. I have owned two scarps and the quality control on them is awful; I’d be cautious recommending them to anyone and that alone. But it’s all opinion. Personally the Abisko is the winner for me across your metrics.

@Bikepacking no need to get all flappy! What I really mean is a shallower pull angle gives a higher outward lift, whereas a low angle pulls the tent fabric down, often in contact with the inner. It's a particular problem with the tarptent scarp 1 at the flysheet ends. It's why you see a lot of people rigging them up with trekking poles. I have found a long guy helps to eliminate that. If you send me the reference from Henry I will happily have a look. Cheers and thanks for commenting.

What is it with this 'footprint' business? I've been camping for nigh-on sixty years, a Scout for most of the pre-teen era - and our troop was one of the largest in the UK (60 strong + 30 odd Cubs and a dozen Ventures...), we camped almost every other month. I then camped every weekend during my final years at school, then numerous naval expeditions ('Expeds) including Ten Tors and Ive NEVER heard of a GROUNDSHEET being termed a 'footprint'... Is this an Americanism?
And the middle guy at 10:38 has been (crudely) CHAINSHORTENED.
I don't really like any of these.. I still prefer my old Ultimate Equipment 'Windsock' - Stolen several decades ago... But if I were buying seriously for new and not to budget -- At the present, the Nordtent Vern 1 (or 2) is the leading contender.

Yes it's an Americanism that's creapt in.
Lover hearing about the good old days. Scouts was where it all started for me. I had one or two ultimates, an Horizon C was one. But, things move on, things develop, and we all try and learn from the previous , or we get old, foisty, moany and stuck in the past. Know about like that?

A very interesting review. I wouldn't buy any of them.. I personally hate tunnel tents. They are too close to your face when lying down and are terrible when the wind changes. I personally use a Soulo I tend not to camp in summer and I mostly camp in the north of Scotland. Forty years of camping and i have one regret.. I never bought the Soulo when it first came out.

Nice review mate . Lovely tents . But in truth for the price I think the vango banshee 200 gives them all a beating . Had my banshee out in all weathers and multiple hikes and not a problem. So for the money I’ll stick with the banshee
