    What's so interesting about these reviews, which is probably self-evident to everyone, is that it really requires trying them out in the field before you know which one you prefer. For example, I am personally always surprised by how much ease of set-up is an important/most important consideration after hiking 8 miles at 10k feet in the Sierras with some wind, but not at all important when reading about them in my living room.

      Hi, thank you for your comments and sorry for taking so long to get back to you...I appreciate that you have commented on a number of my videos so thank you very much. I have owned two of these tents which I have tested extensively in other videos. I borrowed the Unna and did try a wind test but the wind didn't respond... Totally agree and I make a big effort to field test sometimes that's when I do my review and it gives me a real feel for the tent as you will see if you watch my latest video... ATB Tom

      Very true. Faffing with a tent when it's bad weather and you've been on your feet all day is a pain in the arse. So I agree that a quick setup is really important. I think this is also part of HB design philosophy for most of their tents. Need to be able to be pitched fast in bad weather with gloves on

  • @thezippyslipchukshow4824

    I use all 3 of these tents on a regular basis, my soulo is an original, bought 2nd hand, well over a decade ago, the instructions claim a weight of 2kg, compared to a modern unna it does feel lighter. They both have their place.
    The unna is unbeatable in usability in heavy rain, or when you have to transit from sodden waterproofs to a dry sleep. It's very easy to unclip the inner, all.but two corners and treat it as an area to cook and dry off, often the inner isn't set up till the sleeping bag comes out.

      Hi, I really appreciate you comments here as having experience of all three of these.. I have lots of experience with the Soulo and Akto BUT was surprised at the Unna and how it was so versatile..The Unna has a great following for sure and its well justified... ATB Tom

    • @Chris66able
      @Chris66able Před rokem

      I really can't see any advantage in the Unna.
      If you've just pitched it in the rain, you open the door and the inner will get wet while you are unhooking.
      It's not versatility having to start unhooking and re-hooking your bedroom to move about your tent. If you get in, especially when wet, get changed have you then got to somehow either re hook the inner or leave it unhooked while trying to get in the bedroom, meanwhile its possibly filling with midges ! You could get any 2 or 3 man tent, half unhook the inner and claim its versatile, surely !

      I don't think you will regret it. I have the Unna in sand + 10 mm poles + the mesh inner + footprint + tarp 5 in sand. I assume that if I double pole and use the tarp 5 it would be next to bomb proof. The best with the tent is that the back pack easily fits inside the tent and there is enough room in the tiny vestibule for stakes, shoes, kitchen or whatever you don't want inside the tent. And also - the reason why I went with my Unna is because I have really bad knees after an injury. With the Unna I can just sort of fall into it. Never have to crawl.

    Camped last night in my Unna in 50kmh gusts. Felt as though the whole tent shook (including the floor strangely) despite using 10mm poles and four extra guys. The outer was touching the inner which was well into the interior, so no good for two people in that situation. Fortunately no rain or condensation last night. Once wind dropped to 30kmh the tent felt it was within its comfort zone. Not sure I’d really want to take it out above 60kmh tbh. Erecting the tent after inserting poles into the sleeves was a bit of a challenge. Glad I had the sturdier 10mm poles. I cooked in the vestibule, pulled back the floor of the inner as you suggested, and it didn’t feel at all unsafe. I took a Jetboil Minimo as it’s less tall and more stable than my Stash (and more efficient in cold, windy weather).

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi Peter, great to hear that you are out camping in windy conditions, and thank you for commenting on your experience. No matter how many guy lines or how thick the poles are the Unna still suffers a bit from having only two poles supporting a reasonably large surface area of fabric. It's not particularly aerodynamic either from the ends or the sides so that would explain the deformation. I am sure putting the tent up with the 9mm poles could have been tricky enough. Cooking seemed to go well though with you pulling the inner tent back. It really frees up lots of space. That was a good idea taking the lower cooker. I had my cooker flames a little too close to the fabric in my last video though no harm done but definitely worth considering. ATB Tom

    Wow, my 2 person expedition tent has 12.7mm DAC poles. 3 of them and then two poles in every corner for triangulation (called jakes corner) It is amazing and rated for 160 km/h winds. No wonder it’s called Hercules by Sierra Designs. It weighs 4.5 kg, but my god, it has saved my butt a few times in horrific storms. Even Hilleberg could learn from this design. 20+ years old and still in perfect condition. The nylon fly has stretched a bit over the years from copping stormy winds, but still waterproof. I think nobody makes tents like this anymore.

      Hi thank you for sharing your experience of the Hercules.. yeah I had a Mountain Hardwear tent that had the Jakes corner set up and it really strengthens the poles... Hilleberg and a few other manufactures dont like changing their tents unfortunately.. Probably because they already sell so well and I can understand that from a business point of view. the Mountain Hardwear Tangent 2 that I had isn't made any more so it mustn't have sold well... A bit of a pity... best wishes Tom

    Hi. I see you really appreciate these tents, I'd like to pass on wisdom to make your pitching easier. 2 tips.
    I incorporated a couple of ideas from Børge Ousland's expeditionary tent, Helsport Patagonia, to my own tent. He's 59, and recently walked unsupported from one end of the North pole to the other side, during winter. He used the Patagonia tent for this. Mad lad.
    • Small mesh pockets, high visibility, attached right next to the guy lines. Super easy to to store your guy lines in and take them out with ease no matter the conditions.*
    • Each pole has a couple of guy lines going out. You could replace the two individual lines, with a simpler sliding Y -system. Attach a 30 cm guy line, from the two existing points. Loose fit, and is the upper part of the Y shape. On that guy line, you put on a ring that can freely slide up at down this short line. From that ring, you'll fix your normal guy line. Now you'll have half as many guy lines with the normal pole support.
    You'll cut down your pitch time and make the experience easier.
    You can watch the video and see the methods for yourself. "Helsport Patagonia - Børge Ousland gjennomgår teltet" These types of tents easily go up in less than 2 minutes in harsh winter conditions.
    I hope that helps and I appreciate your enthusiasm for these strong tents. 💪

      Hi Wille, thank you for watching and taking the time to comment with this advice. My North Face tents have the sliding Y type system which definitely makes it quicker to manage. The mesh pocket system looks good too. Every option has a few pros and cons and Hilleberg like to keep it simple which also keeps their production costs down... I do like the Helsport idea and tents but just haven't had the opportunity to try them.. Had a look at the video too thank you. ATB Tom

    I have a hard time choosing between the Unna and the Akto. I would love to buy a Soulo, but these are so terribly short for me! Not only do I hit the inner tent, but I seriously push it away at the head and foot end. Even without a sleeping mat under me. I have a Staika myself and I prefer to lie in it diagonally. (length) The length of the Akto is desirable, but the tent is not freestanding and on the low side. The Unna is "limited" in length for me, and I think I would miss the vestibule. It's true: the perfect tent doesn't exist! Thank you for your comprehensive review!

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey thank you for this detailed comment... I totally agree that its hard to find a perfect tent... Length in them all can be an issue if you are tall.. Even the Staika dome slopes in quickly from the ends when you gain height from the floor.. You may just have to learn to sleep on your side with knees and hips bent as some compromise... As far as I am aware the Jannnu is another long tent but again slopes in quickly from the tail but maybe not so much at the front... You just need to try lying in them to find and real world difference that the measurement s don't show.... Rob from Rob Outdoor Prep on YT is a tall lad with fair experience with a number of Hilleberg.. you could message him but in honesty sometimes there is no perfect solution witch I think you already know... I should have actually sneaked in a .5 second caption saying "actual test winner" to see who noticed. Yes a fantastic all rounder and absolute winner for a lot of scenarios....Its looks are so growing on me too especially the side guys which take away form its rectangular look... That front vestibule is such a bonus when you don't expect it. Exceeding expectations is always good and the interior volume and space for two mats smashes it again.... A fantastic comparison of three outstanding tents. Thank you for a brilliant review Tom, I have the Unna and really enjoy its versatility all year round but not fully convinced on its suitability on a summit in windy conditions. I bought it at a good price after selling my scarp 1, although the scarp is a tent that is really all you should need for uk camping and is very impressive in strong winds but it always left me a little cold when using it. Just got a nallo 2 at a steal so will see how this fairs in comparison to the Unna. Really enjoy your videos Tom. Keep up the good work mate.

      Hi Michael, thank you for your positive feedback and great to hear of your experience with the Unna and Scarp 1. I totally agree on you thoughts on the Unna re the high winds.. Fab that you got a Nallo (saw one on GumTree a few days ago, was that the one you got???). Have been close to buying a Nallo many times but decided on a Nammatj 2 instead which I am currently testing and reviewing next on my channel. ATB Tom

      Hi Tom, I got it off the Hilleberg for sale fb group. Bargain for £400 so will be testing out it next week. I like to go high up so time will tell if the Unna and Nallo 2 are suitable for those conditions. Im willing to take a heavier tent for the benefit of a comfortable living space. Really looking forward to your forthcoming review of Namatj 2 Tom.

      @@williammay6879 Hello. How did Unna test in the wind? I recently bought a Samaya assault 8K for climbing 7000 peaks, but with a heavy heart I am returning it to the seller. An excellent tent in all respects, but one wall does not retain heat at all. It was minus 10 C both outside and in the tent all night. The Unna is very similar to this tent in size and ease of setup. I don’t really understand why you and Tom think it’s not windproof? Please share your experience.

    Great review thanks. I am def in the market for a Unna but they can’t seem to be had for love or money in Britain. Excellent run through the tents Tom. Cheers :-) I'm a hefty 6ft 4in and a year ago after much research, and hopping between a Nallo and Akto in the shop, ...I bought the Akto. It was just about long enough and I was happy lying down but actually, not being able to sit up properly drove me mad. I couldn't bear to be in the tent. Of course, I hadn't seen your video :-) The shop were able to return my money as the tent still looked perfect. Well done George Fisher, Keswick.
    Being tall is a PITA when trying to find a lightweight tent. Returning to wild camping after decades away I hadn't realised just how good the 105cm interior height of my ancient (but heavy) Terra Nova Quasar was. I can just about sit bolt upright in it. Nervous of going lower than 105cm I got a TarpTent Scarp 2. The inner tent is 218cm x 132cm and the large vertical end walls make all that space usable when lying down. Interior height 114cm. More than required. With a single pole it weighs about the same as the Akto. With the optional 2 external crossing poles that convert it to a 4 season tent it's still only around 2.2kg.
    I'd like bigger vestibules but when using it as a solo tent that doesn't matter so much. I'm not short of space for kit. I'm trying to dump the crossing poles altogether which, although I haven't used them in anger yet, are probably needed for strong winds. I have a plan to rig all the external flysheet straps with super-lightweight paraglider lines to a single small lightweight karabiner at each end. I can then quickly clip both ends to guyed trekking poles. It'll help keep the fly off the inner and I think it will be sturdy enough to deal with most winds.
    Keep up the good work!

      Hey Geoff, thank you for taking the time to write all this detail. It is interesting to hear your history of tents as I too have had a couple of terra nova quasars over the years. The Akto is a little frustrating as it has good length for tall people lying down but absolutely no height. The Scarp 1 and 2 are quite popular and I have considered them a couple of times but went for the Akto instead as I was so impressed with my Soulo which I bought first. No doubt the extra poles for the Scarps will add to strength and they are a good design. I think I would need to see one to appreciate the details... Once again thank you for sharing your experience. Many thanks for this complete description, it's very usefull and it comforts me in my choice ! I have owned an Akto for sereral years and it's a very good tent, but I'm now switching to a Soulo for really winter conditions. I prefer a free-standing model, it seems very easier to set up on rocky fields or when the ground is covered with snow, and the Akto doesn't like the accumulating snow weighing on the canvas. I just ordered the Soulo BL, which should arrive home tomorrow. I'm eager to test it (in the french mountains of Chartreuse or Vercors) !!!

I have however double polled my Hilleberg Nammatj 2 with the Akto pole (same length) and it makes a big difference and also makes you less reliant on guy points if the ground is difficult... The Akto can be used with additional guy lines, light 2mm dyneema, bracing the pole by the door. I haven't been able to get a 10mm pole. Replace the metal zip pulls with fluorescent line (from DD) and use a space blanket footprint. When you use Clamcleat line locks use a few inches of 'tail' when you tie them to the dyneema so you can tie a lashing to strengthen the cleat. I wouldn't use a tall gas stove, always a remote canister and I use a plumber's heat proof mat as a stable base under a stove.

    For me the best “allround” 4-Season solo tent from Hilleberg is the Akto or Nallo 2 in terms of weather protection/internal space/vestibule by lightest possible weight That said the Enan might be even better than the Akto. It is more of a 3 season+ tent. a better “update” than lets say the Niak to Unna/Soulo. The Niak has too many flaws and cant keep up. But it really comes down to what someone needs. some might need a free standing tent and therefore cant do much with a tunnel design.

The Unna seems like it was made for 2 people but it's not marked that way. The Soulo just seems a little to small for me. Hi Jere, thank you for watching and taking the time to comment especially as a Akto user. It is so difficult deciding between the tents and the measurements only tell half the story. The Soulo has enough space but still feels a bit confined. The Unna will manage two people no problem at all and Hilleberg are definitely being conservative with their classification as a one person tent or one and a half.... Moving around and managing gear in the Unna is just so relaxing as there is so much space. I do still love my Akto and for single overnight trips I can manage quite well in it. Sometimes it can just be what you are used to and if I was to use an Unna on many occasions then it would be difficult to go back to the Akto.... Happy camping and time in the outdoors. ATB Tom

    When in heavy rain, everything getting wet… I hated my Unna.. on winter trips where eventually everything you got is covered in a layer of ice, I hated my Unna. But then theres all the other trips, and thats alot of them..where you open the whole side up with the biggest view ever out of the tent. The ease of setup, the flexibility, true 4season use.. If not on the first night, evenetually everything is wet. The ice forming on longer winter trips is partly due to the lack of a vestibule and the ventilation.. a tunnel just works better in the snow for the longer trips. But if Id choose to have just one tent for the whole year, it would probably be the unna. The problems can be worked around, and you can easily dry out the tent with heating in the inner tent. Have an Akto and Soulo BL. The Akto with 2x10mm poles is super strong, the Soulo though even stronger with alot more inner space. The Akto doesn't really have any issues with condensation due to lots of ventilation, the Soulo though does. With the Soulo if no wind and vent open, you will wake up with water dropplets on the inside of the inner and a slightly damp sleeping bag from drips. With the Soulo, if you fully close the inner , you will end up with condensation on the inner of the groundsheet aswell.
    Is the condensation of the SOulo a deal breaker? No, it is manageable but a price to pay for such a great tent.

      @TOMHEANEY100  Před 3 lety +4

      Yeah, I am aware of that as the video was just getting a bit long.... I feel the Unna would definitely win on the ventilation front due to the fact that the sides can be raised in addition to the ventilation cover. The Akto can be quite well ventilated due to the angle of the ends protecting the vents from most weather. This gives a good through flow of air. The Soulo only has the vent cover with no other options. Its a tough one for me as the wind nearly always blows in Northern Ireland so ventilation is seldom an issue, but these are my thoughts and experience with all of the tents.... ATB Tom

One question; when you say "high winds", what are we talking about? I live in the mountains of northern Colorado and camp here frequently. It's not uncommon to get 40mph gusts. Hi great question... 40MPH about the comfortable limit of this tent IMO. The tent is also vulnerable from the side as no poles or guy options to support it... An upgrade to 10mm poles helps but adds weight... If you can get around the self supporting thing then consider a Nallo 2. Which one do you think is more stable in wind, the Akto or the Unna? I have an Akto and for me it's big enough - im a small person - and I really love the "im on an adventure" feeling that a tunnel tent gives. :) However, the Unna looks very comfortable. I'd love to have a freestanding tent, but im not sure. The 2 poles don't make the Unna look more stable than the Akto, rather more points that can bend / break. What do you think? If you had to choose one for windy conditions, which one would you choose?
    Thanks!

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi that's an awsome question.. You are right even when the Unna has 10mm poles inserted it still presents a large surface area to the wind and large unsupported panels.. The Akto is lower with large enough unsupported panels but is quite aerodynamic.. As the one pole support s the whole structure when you use a 10mm pole it makes a big difference... So it's definitely the Akto for windy conditions. Also easier to pitch I think in high winds. I love the Unna but the freestanding thing is overrated IMO as all tents should be pegged out to secure. I'd prefer a Nallo 2 over the Unna anytime due to better space, vestibule space, volume and aerodynamic s to handle the winds... ATVB Tom

    @Tom Heaney how would you assess the strength of the Tarptent Scarp 1? Would it bear comparison to these?

      Hi thank you for watching and making this comment. I have no direct experience of the Tarp Tent Scarp 1 but have watched many videos on it. IMO it would have the edge strength wise on the Unna, about the same as the Akto in single pole set up but stronger in 3 pole set up... But not as strong as the Soulo no matter what way it is set up. Definitely a nice tent and an alternative to these 3... ATB Tom

    Hello how tall are you? I ask because i am 6'4 and have always looked at the Atko but thought it would be too small.

      Hi Mark, thank you for watching. I am 6'1 and have no issues at all in the Akto.. It's deceptively long due to the sides sloping away from the floor at camping pad level... height though is definitely limited.... I hope that this helps as it can sometimes be what you are used to which can also make a difference. Tom

    How were you able to trade out the Unna poles for 10mm?

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  Před rokem

      Hi Brian they were not traded in or out. These are an extra set as I think they are the same length as the Staika poles. You can obviously check on the Hilleberg website if it interests you... All the best wishes.. Tom

    Hi tom. I'm trying to choose between the unna and enan. Do you have any thoughts?

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  Před 7 měsíci

      Yeah it is just regarding your individual needs.. The Unna is larger heavier and stronger but the Enan is lighter, less pack size but smaller. I have eventually fallen out with the Akto mainly due to lack of space and this will be the same with the Enan. Both are very small tents. So for me definitely the Unna . I hope this helps. Best wishes and sure let me know if you decide on one... Tom

      @@TOMHEANEY100 thanks for the reply
      I've owned a nallo 2 gt since 2007 and it's been brilliant. But I want something with a smaller and pack size and slightly lighter for solo light trekking.
      Main areas to wild camp will be peaks, dales, lakes, occasionally Scotland. Narrowed it down to two very different tents.
      Enan. I''ve read lots and come to the conclusion that the enan being a Scandinavian 3 Sean's is good 4 season for anything the UK can throw at it except snow. Apparently the enan is better with ventilation/condensation than the akto and has a little more room above your head when laying due to the inner not hanging down so low. Only think that concerns me is the mesh inner door making it cold.
      Unna. More head space. More living area. Everyone who has one seems to love it. I would love to hear from someone who has used both and can advise on the better one.
      My questions/concerns.
      - when it's raining and wanting to get wet gear off and and sort kit out you have to u clip the unna inner first to create a vestibule.
      - when opening the door of the unna if its raining, it looks like the die to the angle the inner would get wet.
      - with the unna if you wanted to have the whole side open in the summer. Is the inner door like on my nallo, it's got 2 zips, so you can have the door fully mesh if you want for ventilation.
      - setting up the unna in the wind. With my nanno, I can peg out the corners then put poles in the lines. Whej I've seen the unna being put up it looks like you put poles in then lines and if windy is there a change once the poles are it and it takes shape, you could loose it.
      - wind, tunnel tents are meant to be better in wind that dome free standing, but the unna is 4 season and enna 3 season, so which is better in wind weight up the style/shape of tent.
      - being able to cook inside in bad weather is important and I believe you can do that in both.
      This is where I'm at.

      @@TOMHEANEY100 due to the reasons you mentioned re size, I'm now looking at the unna, niak, and possibly rogen. Any experience with those?
