Hi Dr. Simi, thanks so much for this informative video. I wanna ask what’s the best method of hair removal for someone with KP that will help minimise or even prevent further irritation on the skin. Will you recommend; shaving, waxing, hair removal cream, or laser? Or is there another way?

Hi Dr. Simi, I developed KP in my mid-20's, and after researching I opted to try chemical peel, which actually removed all of it. But then it came back after a couple of months with a vengence, and now it looks much worse than before. Do you think this is just KP or something else?

I have it all along all parts of my legs accept the inner thigh, and I always wear long pants because im self conscious about what others will think. I’m also always uncomfortable when wearing shorts so it gets hard in summer. I never really wanted to peruse a way to get rid of these bumps until recently. I had someone who commented on the way my legs looked and I said I have a skin condition, and they asked if it was contagious. This really got to me and I felt really terrible about it. • @DrSimiAdedeji
      @DrSimiAdedeji  Před 4 lety +45

Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! As you've already noticed, scrubbing the skin leads to irritation and hyperpigmentation which will fade with time and can be helped using topical skin care products that contain tyrosinase inhibitors such as Arbutin, Kojic acid etc. Vitamin A (Retinoid) creams can also help and you may choose from non prescription formulations and preparations that are only available on prescription from a doctor.
CeraVe does a great range of inexpensive hydrating body cleansers including one that contains salicylic acid which helps with KP. Most CeraVe products also contain Niacinamide which helps to clam irritated skin, improve the skin barrier and help to reduce pigmentation. I hope this helps.

As the doctor said, it's a harmless condition and it can be easily treated. I personally don't follow any clinical treatment, I just use a good body moisturizer and that controls any dryness. If that condition makes you feel uncomfortable, I recommend you to treat it with a dermatologist, but it shouldn't have to be an impediment to develop social relationships, so don't worry about that. Or you just can say you have crocodile skin :p that's what I said every time people asked me about my skin and it always made them laugh, cheer up!

I can't tell you how much it warms my heart that you discussed what this looks like on different skin types. I've seen several videos by dermatologist and they often describe it "red bumps" which doesn't apply to me because I have dark skin. I have other skin concerns as well and it's frustrating to look on the internet and find only pictures of light/white skin or to go to the walk in clinic and be prefaced with "You have dark skin so it's hard to tell but (gives me incorrect diagnosis). I feel #seen

I'm sorry to hear that this is affecting your self confidence so much. if you have tried salicylic acid cleaners and creams and moisturisers containing urea you could also try retinoid cream. Some people report that microdermabrasion also helps although care has to be taken with darker skin tones not to cause hyperpigmentation. Failing that some types of lasers can also help with the appearance of KP. I hope this helps.

Hi Samantha. This is a very common condition and it doesn't cause any physical harm to you but it can cause emotional distress for many people and affect your self esteem and confidence. Its more common for KP to occur on certain areas of the body such as outer parts of arms and legs so if you really have them all over your body, you could try to see a dermatologist for an assessment and possible biopsy. As I mentioned in my video, there are also lots of other skin conditions that look like keratosis pilaris but that are not and a dermatologist will be able to explore these options. I hope this helps.

    1. Keep baths and showers short
    5-10 minutes. Use lukewarm
    water.
    2. Use a mild, fragrance- free
    cleanser
    3. Gently exfoliate (AHA, BHA,
Retinoid, or Urea) skin once a
    week
    4. Use thick moisturizer on your
    skin. Look for moisturizers that
have urea or lactic acid in them.
I personally alternate between lactic, urea, and retinoid body lotions.

I have KP and I've just never been able to wear short sleeves or strapped clothes or off-the-shoulders in my life! Always watched others my age look stunning in dresses that I couldn't wear because my arms would look hideous:")

I had mine since 9 years I’m 21years now, very embarrassing especially when someone try to touch your skin and finds out how rough it is💔💔I always thought I was alone in this, and I’ve realized that it’s not a disease just ppl having different skins

I've had it all my life, and I always wondered why my arms were so red and bumpy compared to other people's. I want tattoos on my upper arms to help hide the redness because I didn't know if there was anything to help with it.
Guess who's gonna go buy some CeraVe cleanser and moisturizers tonight?

Thank you! This is so helpful!! This skin condition actually causes me to chronically get ingrown hairs. Any tips for this all over the legs, or will your tips for the skin naturally also help the hair follicles? Thanks! Ps: cold showers actually help even more! I did the wim hof method before, and it was amazing for the skin! Although not easy mentally at first because brrrr! 🥶

Girl, I started getting this “chicken skin” in my 30’s. My skin must have missed the memo about having it as a kid or in adolescence.

Ok...Because here I am in my 40s trying to figure out what are these fine itchy bumps that are appearing on my skin...I realize that they weren't blackheads or any type of pimple because when I tried to squeeze a few it was dry then around whatever I squeezed became even more irritated and itchy so even though it's claimed to be a thing among kids, teens and young adults I'm guessing it's a problem at any age...So here is fall and they've gotten worse...Used to be only my arms now here goes my neck and chest smh

My daughter has this and I'm told for years it was just eczema. It shows up more as the cooler season begins. Right now its SO bad, hence my research. I just started using natural soaps made with honey , oatmeal and essential oils. But now I will try the cetamacrogol. She is 11 and is very sensitive to products. Under my insurance plan I have one children dermatologist and she has never mentioned keratosis pilaris to me EVERRRR. Thank you for sharing and may God continue to bless you and the service you provide to others.

So I’ve always had this but I never knew what it was. I’m glad I now know what it is so I can try treating it, because I always tried so hard to hide it.

    Excellent content doc! New subbie:)
CeraVe works wonders for clearing up those bumps. Consistency is key however. Doc could you please cover the benefits of Intense Pulse Lighting treatment vs. Topical products like B3 to address the redness. Some doctors claim that IPL can help target and constrict the red vessels in the skin. Thank you so much🙏🏽

Thank you and thank you for subscribing! . There are some lasers that are used in this way to target the redness that can be associated with KP. I will be doing a video about laser treatment in darker skin tones and I will incorporate this into the video.

This is very helpful. I had this problem since I was at 8 or 9 years old I never shaved my legs but my mom noticed it. It’s made me feel so insecure I never wear shorts.

Can you do a video on hair removal methods on darker skin tones? I am interested in lazer hair removal but am afraid because I was told it’s harder for those with warm to dark skin tones. Thank you

Hi, thank you for your suggestion. I do have a video planned on laser and laser hair removal in black skin. I will be uploading this soon.
